When NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about league discipline for Colts owner Jim Irsay earlier this week, he said that the league would wait for things to “play out” because, in part, no charges had been filed as a result of Irsay’s March arrest.

Charges have now been filed, which changes the situation and will lead to more questions for the league about what, if any, discipline they will hand down to Irsay. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello issued a statement reiterating that Irsay is subject to league discipline and that the league will act after reviewing the case.

“The NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy applies to all league personnel and holds all of us accountable,” Aiello said. “We are reviewing the matter and will take appropriate action in accordance with the policy.”

Redskins safety Ryan Clark accused the league of hypocrisy for waiting to discipline Irsay, who helped present Indianapolis’ losing bid for Super Bowl LII this week, and others have wondered if there’s a double standard at play for owners. With the charges against Irsay just coming down on Friday, it’s a bit too soon to know if that will turn out to be true but plenty of people will be watching to see how Goodell and the league ultimately respond.
