Jim Harbaugh doesn’t want to speculate about Aldon Smith

The 49ers will be without Aldon Smith for some or all of this season, either because he’s in jail after pleading no contest to driving under the influence and three felony weapons charges, or because he’s suspended by the NFL. But that’s a problem 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh doesn’t want to talk about right now.

Pressed by reporters about it at the team’s rookie minicamp, Harbaugh said he wouldn’t address the matter.

“I’m not going to get into speculating on what’s going to happen, what could happen, what will happen,” Harbaugh said, via the San Jose Mercury News. “There’s nothing really further that I can add to this line of questioning. You can take bamboo shoots and stick ‘em under my fingernails and there still wouldn’t be any more I could add further to this discussion.”

With Smith and other 49ers getting into off-field trouble, it’s been pointed out that they’re not living up to the standards Harbaugh laid out when he famously took a shot at the Seahawks’ performance-enhancing drug suspensions by saying, “We want to be above reproach in everything and do everything by the rules.” Harbaugh acknowledged that not all of his players are above reproach.

“No, we’ve got some things we’ve got to resolve,” Harbaugh said. “But we are in a process–and always are in a process of striving to be above reproach, yes.”

Ultimately, Harbaugh said, others will decide Smith’s fate.

“I am not an attorney or a judge,” Harbaugh said. “I’m a football coach. So I will let that go through the legal process. There’s nothing more that I can add to it. At this time.”

For at least part of this season, Harbaugh will be a football coach without one of his best players.

  1. If you watch the video of the exchange between Harbaugh and Kawakami it’s clear that Harbaugh didn’t mind talking about Aldon Smith. Harbaugh simply (and not surprisingly) didn’t have an answer as to what is ultimately going to happen to Smith, and for whatever reason Kawakami thought he deserved those answers yesterday, and kept hounding. It was weird.

  2. I bet Smith gets a slap on the wrist. Just like the rest of the law breakers playing for the Niners. Can they fire Harbaugh already, so sick of his routine.

  3. Oh, glad I read the article. I thought he meant speculating about Aldon’s next criminal act, which would be far more reasonable. The good news is regardless what crime he commits next they’ve already dealt with some on their roster since they’ve pretty much covered the spectrum.

  4. The league needs to punish him because Harbaugh won’t. I wouldn’t hold my breath, the 49ers, for some reason, are one of Roger Goodell’s favorite teams

  5. Guns are talked about in length when rookies enter the league. Obsession with guns and the nfl are like oil and water. See Aaron Hernandez. Hardy and Smith are both dealing with this obsession. I love guns, but if I had to put them down for 5-10 years to work my chosen profession that pays millions I think it’s a no brainer. Has anyone actually checked to see if some of these felons have a brain outside of the wonderlick? Sorry Vince, at least those fools paid you anyway. One year minimum for weapons charges. This is enough of this crap.

  6. “You can put bamboo shoots under my fingernails, you evil little Asian-American reporter, but I’m not talking!”, said Captain Harbaugh with square jawed resolve and a steely eyed glare. The torture continued…

  7. Aldon Smith legally purchased two or three assault rifles in Arizona and didn’t realize that they needed a minor alteration called a bullet button to be legal in California. That is the extent of the gun violations and it hardly falls into the Aaron Hernandez category. For that matter, it doesn’t even rise to the level of Marshawn Lynch’s gun felony in which he knowingly brought a loaded handgun into an airport.

  8. Aldon needs to just tone it down,he’s not the hardened criminal a lot of you rival fans want him to be,

  9. Marshawn Lynch brings a loaded gun into an airport, yet Seahawks fans are here talking trash on Aldon per usual. Seahawks fans are obsessed with the 49ers.

  10. Jim Harbaugh is the finest football coach in the NFL. Hands down. Its not even close. He’s light years ahead of everyone in his own division

5-3 against Pete Carroll heads up
    4-1-1 against Jeff Fisher
    2-0 against Bruce Arians.

Simple math really! Ownage is ownage!

  11. Harbs wasn’t sure if Smith would be the starter because he it was too early to name starters. But he did say that Aldon was “above (Rashad) Reproach” on the preliminary depth chart.

  12. You had your time to point the finger at others including Seattle , the reason people are pointing at your team is bc your team is full of a bunch of criminals and people looking to get violent including each other .

Own it your team is embarrassing the niner tradition pointing out others Only makes you lose credibility especially bc the person your pointing out hasn’t been in trouble in three years . He had to rebuild his image and your trying to use him as some sort of collateral damage . Fact is Aldon Smith is a habitual criminal and a complete idiot OWN your team supporting all that behavior by rewarding him with an extension . Your team does not care what players do off the field as long as they Compete on it , get over it already own your shame like everyone else had to own whether 100% true or not .

  13. The Seahawks didn’t even play their best football last year and won it all. Can’t wait to see how this young team keeps growing and getting better. Russell Wilson is the man.
