Marvin Lewis: Blaming Dalton for playoff loss is “baloney”

AP

Andy Dalton had a bad game in the Bengals’ playoff loss to the Chargers, but coach Marvin Lewis thinks it’s unfair to pin the loss solely on Dalton.

Everybody wants to blame our quarterback for everything, but in that game against San Diego it was both offense and defense,” Lewis told Don Banks of SI.com. “We didn’t stop them on third down and get off the field, our great little running back [Giovani Bernard] fumbled the football [at the 5-yard line], and we didn’t make any plays on special teams or turn the ball over on defense. It’s easy to point at one guy, but baloney, the football team didn’t play as well as we needed to win.”

Dalton has one year remaining on his rookie contract, and it’s unclear how close the two sides are to a new deal. Lewis suggested that Dalton may be seeking a contract in the $18 million a year range, which is what Jay Cutler got from the Bears.

“I know he would like to get it done and I know we’d like to get it done, and just hopefully we can get by that deal with my man, Cutler in Chicago and we can all get something everybody likes,” Lewis said.

If Dalton wants Cutler money, the Bengals would be wise to make him wait for it. The playoff loss may not have been all Dalton’s fault, but if Dalton is going to get paid like a top-tier quarterback, he should prove he can play better in a playoff game than he played against San Diego.

  1. I live in Bengal land, any time i get into an argument with one of them, i just let them know ANDY DALTON IS YOUR QB. game set match #Nobodyhasitbetter

  2. Dalton’s playoff stats: 1 TD, 6 ints, 56.9% comp, 56.2 passer rating.

  3. Wow, Marvin going hard. Love it. Hilarious hearing Bengals fans blame their departed cooridinators. The whole team has issues, folks. And $18mil/year for Dalton is insano. Hes no DangeRuss Wilson, i’ll tell you that.

  4. Cutler isn’t worth anywhere near $18M.
Dalton hasn’t even proved his worth to remain the starting QB despite having above avg receivers and a good defense.
    Truth hurts sometimes.

  5. Dalton definitely deserves some of the blame for his poor play, but some of Gruden’s playcalling was really quite bizarre.

That long bomb call on 4th and 3 in the Chargers game was just completely mind-boggling. They were running great the entire 1st half and then inexplicably abandoned the run in the 2nd half. That’s not all on Dalton.

  6. “Everybody wants to blame our quarterback for everything”

Uhhh Marvin… That’s because we watch the guy play!

  7. I’d rather have Dalton than rg3-13, Jake locker, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Schaub, Brian hoyer, Carson Palmer, chad Henne, Matt Cassell/Christian ponder, josh mccown, geno smith…

  8. Dalton needs to get hurt a couple times a year and be a snot nosed punk to the media and get out-shined by his backup. That’s the Cutler way. You wanna get paid like Cutler, act like Cutler.

  9. I disagree with Marvin Lewis, and assume he’s just trying to protect his QB’s feelings.

Andy Dalton gifted us the game with his three turnovers. He appeared to be in over his head, nervous, rattled, bad decisions. When the fumbled the ball without being touched by a Charger, you could see it in his face and body language – totally flustered.

On his two interceptions he tried force the ball into coverage – both were bad decisions. His 67.0 rating for that game is the reason the Bengals lost, conversely Rivers’ 119 rating is the reason the Chargers won.

Watching that game made me come to the conclusion that Andy Dalton is going to hold back the Bengals, who otherwise are a very talented team.

  10. Cutler is getting paid market value and already pushed money into future years to clear cap space…Vick was paid 14 mil for nothing and what about Romo’s contract ???? My gosh let Dalton earn it…

  11. Marvin’s support reminds me of Baseball when the GM or owner comes out and says, “I have total confidence in the manager”, and they fire him the next day.

At best, it just reinforces the pressure on Dalton.

  12. We don’t blame Dalton, we blame you Marvin.

Neither has a playoff win, but Marvin has had more chances and has repeatedly failed.

  13. Marvin’s right…the whole team played like garbage against SD. Just like each of Marvin’s 5 playoff teams were unprepared and overmatched in playoff games.

  14. The Bengals 53 man roster > than your teams!
Conversely, if it was all about who had the better QB, wouldn’t New England, Denver, New Orleans or Green Bay win the Super Bowl EVERY SINGLE YEAR????
Haters, hate all you want! The Cincinnati Bengals are a top 10 football team for the last 3 years. Assuming all of you trolls played real sports as kids (not fantasy), haven ‘t you ever heard the phrase “you win as a team & lose as a team???” 1 guy dosen’t win or lose you a hockey, basketball, baseball or football game for 3+ years fellas! I know ya’ll hate Dalton, but get used to him, he’s gonna be beating your teams for awhile. Learn to Deal!!!

  15. I’m going to go ahead and guess Dr Rusty is conspicuously absent from this thread. The kitchen is getting hot, rusty. Real hot.

You are correct for once …shocking? So instead of Andy chokes it’s the entire team chokes in the big moment. Hey Bungals will be Bungals. Thank god we have them to laugh at. Now get your snickers and relax.

    —————–
San Diego’s 53 man roster last season > your team.

  18. Marvin is a great coach! I am so glad we Viking fans hired Zimmer, he is a top notch coach that finally had his # called! The bengals are oober talented, and Dalton has done a decent Job, his 3rf year will determine if he is worth QB money!

  19. Say what you want but I do know he is a far better QB than me or any other person who has posted about is flaws.

  20. Dalton’s lifetime stats

    Rating 85.7
    Completion % 60.9
    80 TD to 49 INT

The numbers say Dalton just isn’t that good; the game against the Chargers say he is just terrible.

  21. Quarterbacks are making WAAAAAAAY to much money. The commish Ole Roger needs to either cap what qb’s make, or raise the salary cap so the Greedy-Azz qb’s can make their bank WITHOUT handicapping the entire team or raising ticket prices. But that’s just wishful thinking. It will never happen. Easier to just raise the ticket prices and let the fans pay.

  22. Andy Dalton is a very capable QB, but like a lot of QBs that seem capable, it’s all about his mentality. That’s what separates the decent from the good and the good from the great. He does not have the mind of a great quarterback. That’s the truth.

  23. I’m not a Bengal fan.. I’m a rival actually..

I will be the first to say Dalton is underrated. He has put the franchise over the hump and gotten them to the playoffs in a very tough division.

If you look at his stay line over the last three seasons it’s better than most 10-15 mil qbs.

The numbers say it all.. He can produce. How about instead of tearing him down.. you get behind him and build him up? Trust me Bengal it could be much worse.. look at the teams my team (the browns) have had..

  24. Agree with no fool. Bengals remain in the hunt and the last three years were a winning football team and fun to watch. Dalton is tough plays hard in some freezing weather and has no quit in him. The year his team wins two playoff games they’ll have a per raid for him. No, not a parade.

  25. t500000t:

Actually, Dalton’s first three years, statistically, have been some of the best in the history of the NFL.

Primetime games and Playoffs on the other hand….Absolutely dismal.

And, Marvin, us Bengal’s fans blame you more than anyone for this team’s continued garbage play in big games.

Different year, different Asst. Coaches, different players, different opponents. Same result. You do the math.

  26. Good comment vegaskid. Either raise the cap or better yet get rid of GODdel.

  27. Every year I look at their roster and expect them to break out, and it just doesn’t happen. Not sure what’s going on in that franchise but something is holding them back.

  28. Well mike zimmer leaving aint gonna help… Should have kept that guy at all costs.

I don’t anticipate dalton improving being able to make up for the loss of zimmer. Even if Marvin Lewis does have defensive pedigree.

  29. Dalton’s playoff stats: 1 TD, 6 ints, 56.9% comp, 56.2 passer rating.

Dalton’s Regular season stats: 3 years in the league, 30W’s, 3 playoff appearances.

  30. The OWNERS don’t want to raise the cap because that’s more $$ in the player’s pockets and less in theirs. The owners want to LOWER the cap. Goodell is a tool, but he has nothing to do with the cap, or QB salaries.

  31. Cutler doesnt deserve cutler money. 1 td and like 10 picks in the playoffs in 3 tries certainly worth a re-up

  32. I like Dalton. We finally have a consistent winning team. A playoff win would be nice, but it’s too early to quit on Dalton. That is, unless we miss being perennial 4-12 threats like we were in the 90’s

  33. I’d jump on the same train many of the people on here are jumping on and make jokes about Dalton…but the problem is Dalton’s not the only QB Lewis has ever coached. He couldn’t win it with Palmer either and he can’t win it with Dalton. One QB chokes in the playoffs? Blame the QB. Two QBs choke in the playoffs? It might be someone higher up on the chain of command. And I’m not defending Dalton here, I’m not a Bengals fan, I’m just saying that when two QBs choke in the playoffs it might be someone else’s fault.

  34. Every year I look at their roster and expect them to break out, and it just doesn’t happen. Not sure what’s going on in that franchise but something is holding them back.

    It’s Marvin

  35. The bottom line is that the Bungles suck. Always have, always will.

  36. Dalton is going to lead a team to the Superbowl and WIN it! and I hope its with our BENGALS!!if not, it will be with one of these NAY SAYERS team…enough said… WHO DEY!!!!!

  37. Yeah; and Matt Ryan isn’t responsible for Atlanta’s playoff losses and Tony Romo is clean for Dallas’ last season fades. If these guys don’t really have anything to do with the losses then they wouldn’t be responsible for playoff wins either. If that is true, why do they pay three times more than any other player?

The Bengals have a very good defense and lots of offensive weapons. Why do you keep losing Marvin? You account for both of Texas’ playoff victories.

  38. Bengals suck and do do the Browns. Dalton is worth 6-8 mil per year. Interception throwing machine. Pittsburgh and Baltimore have punked Ohio forever. Go State! Lol

  39. Dalton is a lot better Qb than jay butler all butler does is throw ints and not make the playoffs hes closer to tony yomos play they are choke artists

  40. This is Marvin’s way of avoiding the fact that a lot of people blame him. How could he even make this comment when he hasn’t even won a playoff game himself without pointing that out. Also Bengalguy, as a fan myself, you are embarrassing. Do you forget our team hasnt won a playoff game in 20 something years???

  41. Check and see how many playoff games Peyton Manning, Dan Moreno, and Drew Breeze won in their first three years as a starter, zero. Dalton has had a better first three years than a couple of future Hall of Fame guys and better than any Bengals quarterback, ever. It is stupid to say, based on three playoff losses, that he’s not an excellent quarterback and should be replaced.

  42. Hey it’s the life a Qb you get most of the love when you win and you get most of the hate when you lose deal with it, be a true franchise Qb and don’t throw 3 ints in nearly all your playoff games

  43. Dalton had zero time to throw during that game. Kyle Cook was waving everyone in.

  44. Dalton can and will be our franchise QB. He has had bad playoff games, but his regular season stats are phenomenal, and I think he breaks the playoff barrier this year.

As far as Marvin bringing up Gio’s fumble, he fumbled, and then they seemed to give up on him, and didn’t run much after that. It was insane. Gruden’s play calling was abysmal. Gruden, as a former QB, seems to be calling plays for himself instead of the actual QB.

Those people saying Marvin will be fired are ridiculous and know nothing about the Bengals. He has done so much to improve the culture of the Bengals, it would be insane to get rid of him. Mike Brown has relinquished some decision making power to Marvin. Starting over with a new coach would be eliminating all that progress. This has been a long journey, taking the Bengals from where they were, a perennial loser with a losing culture, to division winners. The rest of the journey is not complete, but I believe Marvin can and will take us to a Super Bowl win.

  45. Baloney? It worries me that a journalist doesn’t know how to spell bologna right. There is even a song to help you.

My bologna has a first name it’s O-S-C-A-R!!!!

  46. Marvin, did you watch the game? I saw a defense that was put on the field deep in their own end due to Andy Dalton turnovers two times in the 3rd qtr in crucial situations. They held SD to field goals both times.

  47. I reluctantly have to agree with unmarvelous Marvin, the whole team sucked/choked, but both OC and DC coaches Zimmer and Gruden had 2 years after the first choke loss to fix the Bengals and failed big time, the Bengals had no O or Dee.
BTW, the amazing (LOL), and way too over rated AJ Green was a no show for all 3 PO games and his drop of the long bomb pass on his numbers sealed the loss. Even if it was a swipe by the defender, he can’t/ doesn’t fight for the ball ala Calvin Johnson.
IMO, the team should improve with Gruden the imposter gone, and maybe Guenther will show them how to stop the run, as Zimmer couldn’t/didn’t in ALL 3 PO games ! ! ! !

  48. After making 1 comment last week, I still get a message declining anything new, saying I said that before.

  49. I was excited when the bengals drafted him. But over the years he keeps making the same mistakes over & over. It’s time to grow up or shutup.

  50. Totally agree with Marvin, glad he finally said something defending Dalton. Regardless of what the hang-ups appear to be with him, the bottom line is he’s a top 10 QB in this league easy. The Cutler deal is redickalus, $18m per year is nuts for an injury prone QB. Now Dalton’s deal probably won’t get done, because the Bengals aren’t nuts, they’ll pay what’s fair to keep the team competitive. I’d be surprised if a deal gets done though before the season starts. Maybe AJ at QB next year.
