In a message on Instagram, unrestricted free agent safety Reed Doughty thanked the Redskins for his eight-season stint with the franchise from 2006 through 2013, thus seemingly indicating that his time with the club appears to be at a close.

“Whether I continue on my NFL journey or transition into a new career, I am thankful,” Doughty wrote in the message, which first came to our attention in a story by Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post.

A sixth-round pick of Washington in 2006, the 31-year-old Doughty has played 107 regular season games for Washington, making 54 starts. He has notched 506 tackles and intercepted three passes in his pro career.

In his statement, Doughty thanked the club’s fans, and he also thanked former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs for the opportunity to play for Washington.

“He valued character, hardwork and special teams. He believed in me enough to take a chance on me and draft me,” Doughty said.

Doughty has been unsigned since the beginning of the new league year in March. Washington has added ex-Steeler Ryan Clark to a safety corps that includes a pair of 2013 draft picks (Bacarri Rambo, Phillip Thomas) as well as the recently reinstated Tanard Jackson.
