Anti-Redskins commercial to air during NBA Finals

Opponents of the name of the Washington Redskins will air their message before a large audience of sports fans tonight.

The Washington Post reports that the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, a tribe based in California, has paid for a 60-second anti-Redskins commercial to run during halftime of tonight’s NBA Finals game. The ad will run in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Sacramento, San Francisco and Washington, and the tribe said it made a “significant investment” to purchase the air time.

The commercial begins with a long montage of names and labels that Native Americans call themselves, like “proud” and “forgotten,” “Navajo” and “Blackfoot,” “patriot” and “soldier,” “Jim Thorpe” and “Billy Mills.” It ends with the narrator saying, “Native Americans call themselves many things. The one thing they don’t” and then an image of a Redskins helmet.

A longer version of the ad was posted on YouTube just before the Super Bowl and has been viewed nearly 2 million times.

  1. Which is why there are not one, but several Native American high schools that use the name “Redskins”.

    Oops?

  2. Snyder bribes politicians while the tribes talk to America.

How can you be behind Snyder??

Snyder has a Napoleon complex and has been the worst thing ever to happen to the redskins.

  3. Maybe they should pool their money and donate it to the Crazy Horse monument in SD. They refuse federal funding and the monument looks the same now as it did 25 years ago. It would be a spectical if it were ever to be finished.

  4. I wonder if Vegas is taking bets on how long before the name change. I would probably bet “under” at this point if the line is 5 years.

  5. This country is getting too soft. If we keep finding select words that are deemed “Racist” and trying to outlaw them more words will come up. Its 2014, its time to grow up and realize that its just words.

  6. I will always refuse to support a name change for the Washington Redskins until Red Mesa High School–located deep in the Navajo Reservation in Arizona–changes its mascot name from the Redskins!

  7. And no member of the Redskins organization, or any of their millions of fans are referring to Native Americans this way either. They are referring to a football team. Period. Get over it already!

  8. Isn’t it illegal for them to use the helmet in the commercial? One would assume the logo is trademarked.

  9. Natural Selection makes no apologies. You were caught off guard against a bigger, stronger, wealthier foe that couldn’t be beat.

Much like the 85%… Go ahead a run your ad backed by the lefties of this country. But truth of the matter is, you are wasting your money.

The name will not change. Someone has to take a stand against the PC police at some point. Nobody said “Redskins” and thought of it in a derogatory sense until the PC police came out and told Native Americans should be offended.

My spine is feeling strong and straight today. Anybody else have a backbone out there?

  10. So if they use the redskins logo, can’t the skins sue them for copyright?

  11. Because one rich white dude in Potomoc, Maryland will really be watching the halftime show for the NBA Finals…

  12. Couldn’t the money used to buy air time to complain about a sports team’s name have been used to, you know, actually help the Native American community?

  13. WHAT!?!?

I thought we’ve been told over and over that 99% of Native Americans were just giddy about the name.

I guess these must be part of the 1 percenters.

  14. IF Native Americans view the term Redskin, the same way blacks view the N word, then yes it should be changed. It shouldn’t be changed because some politician wants everything to be politically correct.

  15. just because you never cared to think of the name as offensive, doesn’t change the fact that it is offensive… and saying multiple high schools have the same name has to be the dumbest argument.. it doesn’t make it any less offensive…… anddddd don’t tell me how tuff you are and how everyone is “too sensitive nowadays” from a keyboard….

  16. @pilot2011

    IT MUST BE A CONSPIRACY!

After all, what white guy pilot shouldn’t be the ultimate arbiter of whether the name Redskin is offensive?

    Hang tough.

    They already changed the south.

    What’s next?

  17. Every time I think this issue has died down, someone new steps forward to voice their displeasure.

    Snyder’s simply delaying the inevitable.

  18. If Native Americans are so opposed to it, buy the trademark from Snyder. He’s a bisnessman, and when it comes to money I am sure he would listen. Seeing that Native American tribes make hundreds of millions on their untaxed casinos on reservations, maybe use some of that money to buy the trademark from him.

  19. @pilot- not sure that they’ll post my post I made a few min ago. Probably not, even though it’s just a real true commentary on 2014 society (which will at least bolster my point to me and the person who approves/denies the comments), but good take.

  20. The Redskin names has a totally different meaning to a generation of people then the so called racist term. I say so called because several Native American authors refer to themselves in books as redskin warriors while describing themselves.

  21. Surprised that ABC didn’t make some excuse to not buy the ad.

And if you wonder where the money is coming from, yes, they have a casino.

  22. That couldn’t have been a cheap ad to run. That should serve as a wake up call as to how offense the name is. The reason the Cleveland Indians, Seminoles and others are not on the hook is because those are actual names of tribes. Redskins is the equivalent of calling the LA Clippers the LA Blackskins. We just witnessed the owner losing his team for saying offensive things yet Washington does it continually. Why doesn’t Dan Snyder get kicked out of the NFL for refusing to change the name? Are African Americans more important, or have more rights, than Native Americans?

  23. Change the name to the Washington Red’s Kins. Change the mascot’s name to Red and something patriotic and the team are all kinsmen to this idealistic figure Red. Over time reduce the space between the words in the logo and Bam! Things are back to normal.

  24. Ive have herd quite a few talks like this one pilot2011 just wrote, clearly a hidden racist looking for an outlet for crap! This is not about backbone or standing up, the fact here is that if it was the Washington crackers, or blacks it would be changed. Personally I don’t care if you change the name or not.

  25. Think an Ad during halftime is a horrible investment , 1st quarter or 3 rd quarter would of been better

  26. How bout the deadskins. The debate is over and in a couple of weeks we’ll start hearing Dan Snyder is on the wrong side of history. Not sure it’s better history but the idiots in this country who focus on Names and such to distract those from real issues that no politicians have the balls to solve won’t stop until they gain their worthless victories.

sleep easier Redskins you are still broke, drunk and hopeless and after this they’ll be no reason to speak about you until you decide to take on the motorcycle company.

  27. “The Washington Best Friends of Mine that have Been Down Since Day One and I’ve Got Their Back and They’ve Got My Back Always” could be shortened and made “extremely offensive” by using the most commonly used word in the pop culture of the party that would be offended. Think about that.

  28. What’s that over there on that wall…looks like some kind of writing…

  29. Unfortunately a keyboard is all we have on here. Personally I care less who is offended by the Redskins name. Yes…..we are a pathetic society who takes God out of everything, and then looks for anything we can to yell and scream about how wrong this or that is. Kids are killing each other in Chicago every day with guns, but gall darn it, they better not take away my 2nd Amendment right to own a gun. As soon as someone said they were offended by the Redskins name, a statement should have been made that said, “to bad”. If you want to change the name, then buy the team. Change it to the Washington Honkies…….I’m white…….don’t care. I’d have to be a sad, pathetic, insecure, cry baby to get offended. You want to get upset about something, get upset about the constitution being twisted to take God out of everything. Get upset that if you don’t believe in God you can sue every time you feel someone was thanking Him or praying to Him in public. I read where a high school track kid was disqualified because he pointed to the sky to thank God when he won his race……..pathetic. So basically….. in this country we can have freedom of speech as long as it doesn’t offend anyone or hurt their feelings.

  30. I like the idea, would it have more effect if it were on a station that has a contract with NFL. I know ESPN is ABC, but fox,NBC, and CBS all broadcast football on basic television. If one of those stations would also air the commercial an even bigger impact could be made. Taking steps forward is a good thing, keep spreading the word, and fighting the fight, someday this name will finally be changed.

  31. Then the braves,Indians,Blackhawks, chiefs and seminoles all have to change there names! Rumor has it that the Indian tribe that is posting the commercials tried to shake Dan Snyder for money to use the name redskin!Always a motive behind everything!

  32. The Redskins should run an ad blasting the NBA for being a racist league. Are we now into using sports broadcasts for political attacks? I guess so. The network ought to know better than to accept this ad.

  33. Respect. Appreciation of what Native American cultures have contributed to America. Get rid of that name and logo.

  34. Haha, awesome ad. Simple yet powerful. Tick-tock, the clock is ticking until the name is changed. Then all you bigots who favor the name can search out another racist topic to support. Love it!

  35. I don’t call myself a Redskin because my skin isn’t red. I’m a pale skinned Cherokee. Anyway, if someone did call me a Redskin, I wouldn’t be offended just wonder about their vision. The term is fine when not used in a derogatory manner and there’s no need for the team to change their name.

Nice try to turn it around to the tough guy behind the keyboard arguement. I was just stating my opinion. At what pointdoes it become too much that every word is evaluated to see if it can be used as a racist slur? I heard the other day that “picnik” is now a racist word to say because people would hang and they would have a picnik around them. When i say the “P” word i think of having friends over for some food and beer. Not trying to be racist at all…

  37. Isn’t it a bit ironic to air such a commercial during an NBA game in the wake of the Donald Sterling fiasco?

Why are the Cleveland Indians getting off scott free in this name change deal?
    ___________________________________
Because the name doesn’t refer to the color of someone’s skin and the scalps that were shown as proof of genocide.
Same reason Chiefs is not offensive, Braves is not offensive, or other teams who specifically honor tribes and not the color of someone’s skin.

  39. Once a slur, always a slur. It is important to use the actual words, and not phrases such as “the ‘R’ word” or “the ‘N’ word” because those are couched attempts to remove the offensive connotations. It is no more acceptable for American Indians to use “Redskins” because they are Indians than it is acceptable for Black teams to use any derivative form of nigger just because they are Black. The double standard is the problem. Either it’s acceptable for everyone or it’s acceptable for no one. Special exceptions for history, tradition, intent, context, culture, etc. are the problem. If a term is acceptable to anyone at any time for any reason then it creates a loophole for anecdotal justification. Yes, Redskins is a slur but since that high school team in Arizona has used it for one hundred plus years it must be acceptable, right? Wrong. In case anyone forgot, the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, fifty years or so after the aforementioned school chose its name. What society considers reasonable changes with time. Slavery, suffrage, segregation, the list is virtually infinite. The politicians in Washington are not helping resolve this issue because their motives are ulterior to say the least. As it has also been proven via quotes from original franchise owner George Preston Marshall that the name was not intended to honor anyone, which has been the affirmative defense of current owner Daniel. M. Snyder, it seems laches, which was applied in the previous case, is irrelevant to the current case. There is also the matter of the USPTO having denied several applications for trademarks which contain “redskins” in any form.

  40. The names not changing.
The redskins Indian community would be better off using that money on cleaning up their community than wasting money on a commercial.
    #HTTR
    #FUMIKEFLORIOANDMICHAELDAVIDSMITH

  41. Dan Snyder hired a lobbyist to support the name.
    Dear Dan,
It doesn’t matter what you do it is still racist.
    Signed,
    Reality

  42. if redskins is racist then so is “Blackfoot”

They were called redskins because their skin was red, burned by constant exposure to the sun. It was a proper adjective, not racist.

Blackfoot should be considered just as racist by hypocrites since it is an adjective describing the color of their feet due to lack of innovation in the footwear department.

I despise hypocricy at the highest levels such as this.

  43. Even if isn’t racist it’s wrong.

Imagine an NFL team called Asians, African-Americans, Germans, Russians, Dutch, Samoans etc.

To name your team after a minority race of people even if it’s meant as a term of endearment for their physical supremacy is crazy.

  44. You left Ira Hayes out of the commercial! How could you? Talk about patriot hero who was forgotten! (But at least the late great Johnny Cash didn’t forget!)

  45. Yocha Dehe Wintun…….Never heard of them….Sorry….What is it, like 6 guys who have like Elizabeth Warren-style genealogy, but they got some rich white liberal people who offered them $ to do the ad?

Once the gov’t is able to push Dan Snyder around, they’ll pushing everyone around….When it becomes the media’s turn, you’ll be sorry, but we tried to tell ya……Private businesses should be left alone, and those who don’t like them can feel free to not patronize those businesses….

How come nobody minds Death Row Records? Cause white people are scared of blacks, browns or any others…..They think by crushing those like Dan Snyder they can curry favor with minorities…

  46. Good for them, generally speaking I think people these days are too PC, but the name Redskins does cross the line

    ——————————————————-

Why is it that once politicians all come out in full force during these PC days is when everyone else grabs their pitchforks? We live in a PC world currently and it’s ridiculous this was never an issue before recently. Please people- focus on real issues that actually have an impact on your life instead of wasting resources.

  47. Im offended that they are offended. What’s it 1001 years? LEFTIST LOONS WILL ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING TO b&T*H ABOUT….LONG LIVE THE REDSKINS….REDSKINS, REDSKINS REDSKINS.

  48. I live in Ottawa, Ontario. I went to South Carleton High School. When I first got there, we were called the “Redskins”. A group called for a name change, it was granted and the name was changed to the “Storm”. We went from having great pride in the name and logo, to quite possibly the softest looking logo I have ever seen. Flash forward a good 12 years, a gentleman in an electronic group that I quite respect, calls out a local football team (The Nepean Redskins) on their political correctness stating “I don’t want my daughters growing up thinking it’s okay to be called a Redskin”. Now we have a bunch of politicians in Washington lobbying for a name change, when there are bigger problems in North America (i.e-guns, poverty, debt etc..). If this name change goes through, not only will I stop being a fan of the Redskins, I will stop watching football all together. We, as a society, need to stop raising groups of victims and start preparing our youth for the inevitable racial driven hate that this world delivers.

Signed- A “Redskin” that wears it proudly.

  49. If the Cleveland Indians isnt racist in itself what if the Cleveland foot ball team was the browns?

    the browns and the Indians?

    someone make a commercial! stat!

hahaha you guys are jokes they have won super bowls with the name redskins nothings going to change.

they have played more than 1,000 games since 1932 and now we decide its racist?

Unfortunately, they don’t have an open ear to your personal story/life.

They have a cause to lead, regardless of how truly Native Americans feel.

Maybe if they would carry the torch to carry out the strength of education, work programs, etc. to help build stronger Native American communities, then those programs can help build a stronger community.

But no, there are causes, such as a name change, that most agree, are not offensive, including yourself-a Native American.

They don’t have time for you OR programs that can actually benefit.

That would make too much sense……

  51. Maybe if it wasn’t the heat and spurs in the finals…. People would actually see the commercial.

Sounds like this Indian fellow is a lot like Daniel Snyder…. Wasting his money on things that just don’t make a difference.

    Once again… NOT RACIST.

  52. I think Snyder should just give in, admit he’s on the wrong side of history, and change the name to something less offensive. Like, “The Washington Dirt Worshippers.”

  53. If the owners came to Snyder and told him they will offer him a tremendous financial package along with a an agreement with DC to build a new stadium back in the city, Dan Snyder will be holding a news conference that day telling all redskins supporters he has realized his lack of compassion for the native Americans and the name is changing.

It’s all about money, nothing else. Do you really think Dan Snyder cares about the fans ? Come on, he only wants to know that your credit card charge was processed.

  54. I don’t consider it a name for Native Americans. I also wouldn’t call them Armor, Socks, or Suit. It is out of ignorance and racism that people think it refers to the skin color of Native Americans.

Don’t give Racists power to destroy words.
    Educate not Eradicate.

  55. I guess ANYBODY and EVERYBODY that has something that offends them= should be able to have it changed…because it my poor little P,,,,,y

  56. Can I demand that the name stay, because I as a football fan, am offended that people find this name offensive? Why does their offense take priority over mine? Let’s put this to a national vote. I believe the last poll had it 87% in favor of the name staying.

I think the Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees , and Montreal Canadiens are just waiting for your brand of crazy to change their names. Are we restricted to English as Oklahoma also is red people? Go get ’em slugger.

As of 2012, less than 2% of the US population was American Indian. Now assuming that %100 of the american indian population is against the word (and there are several american indians on record that say that they and their communities aren’t) that is a heck of a small minority. If all it takes is less than 2% of the population to get a word banned then we should give up on language all together.

It’s just another diversion to keep people from focusing on the larger issues that effect their life. Getting riled up about Redskins will not have an effect on 99.9% percent of the population but gives them something to vent their anger on and focus on other than the politicians and their lack of real power to effect meaningful change.

  58. There must be a change!?! Let’s try these: The Washington Whiskey Swillers?… Washington Indian War Losers, Washington Fire-Waters, the Washington when is my government check going to be in the mail boxes, or even the Washington I traded this entire country for a few shiny pebbles and snickered about it thinking I had “won” people. Perhaps, they would shut-up and let us have our tradition… football!

  59. My grandpa was 6’8. Maybe I should protest every Eli Manning touchdown by filing a discrimination lawsuit. It hurts to see a “giant” made fun of…

This one is as funny as that Halbritter dbag.. nothing but a casino owner making a political deal with dem libs….. this should be offensive, and I think it is, to the native american community…

Redskins is NOT a slur, no matter how hard the ignorant PC crowd tries to make it one to suit their politics..

I really hope this issue unites all reasonable people against the Libs and their agenda… these guys are the true enemy of a strong and just (for all) America

    Hail to the REDSKINS!

  61. This issue makes me very proud to be a Redskin fan and I think reflects very well on Mr. Snyder…… I am hoping Native Americans stand up and join the fight against the Libs and demands real help, not to be used by Libs and the few casino Indians selling them out for personal gain…

    Hail to the REDSKINS!

  62. where are the Fighting Irish when we need them? this should be a uniting issue….

fight PC and all who participate.. it is time to get honest and real in this country and flush these people out…

If all native American’s felt that way then there would be no controversy. The video this article refers to was created by Native Americans who are offended by the name.

  76. I keep saying that until the name “Redskins” starts affecting the NFL’s bottom line, there will be no change. The only pressure Snyder will feel will be from the other owners if they feel they are losing money. The Redskins are perennially among the top 5 in team merchandise sales, so right now there is no such pressure.

If things like this ad and the senators’ letter begin to sway public sentiment to the point that it does start affect the NFL’s income, then the name will change–but only if/when that economic pressure occurs.

I’d like to address some general comments though:
    1) In previous articles I’ve seen numerous statements along the lines of if the native Americans are so against it, why do we only see a few protesters at games? Well, here is a tribe whose leadership has deemed the issue important enough to buy expensive commercial time to let you know they don’t think the name is okay.
    2) Variants of “why don’t they help real Indians?” This ad time has been purchased by real Indians–obviously they think the issue is important enough to pay real money to try to do something about it.
    3) “But there is a high school on a reservation that uses the same name.” Irrelevant. Besides, someone calling themselves something is not the same thing as others calling themselves that.
    4) Expecting to be treated politely and with respect is not being “PC.”
    5) “Why aren’t the Cleveland Indians under pressure to change their name?” Because “Indian” isn’t an epithet. They have, however, been under a lot of pressure to ditch their mascot, Chief Wahoo.

  77. The name won’t make it unless they change the logo to Mike Shannahan’s profile on the side of the helmet. People will become much less offended when you call a white guy a “Redskin”. plus Shannahan does have kind of a red tint to him doesn’t he? So really this makes sense.

Of course the other alternative is to change the name …. Might be easier to change the name than to market t-shirts with Shannahan’s profile on the logo.

First, As the daughter of a WWII vet with a rich history of Native American ancestory; my dad used to refer to himself as a “red man”.

Second, if the emblem/name has been deemed offensive then the Federal government needs to stop making currency with a very similar emblem on it. Just a few years back the government started menting a new “buffalo nickel” that has the emblem of a native american chief’s head and head dress.

Lastly, I truly wished our government officials (congress and senate) would put this type of energy and inititive into addressing topics and issues that truly threaten this country’s stability. The US house of reps has the record of the least productive group in american history, and the senate has the lowest approval rate in decades. The team has had this name and logo for years and why all of a sudden is this such a offensive topic that requires intervention from government officials to solve? ALL their sorry, greedy arses need a pink slip!

  81. Can I just say this has gotten so out of control…on both sides…I am now fatigued by the subject.

    Just make it go away…please…

I want to focus on the part that is most important…FOOTBALL

The leftists are despicable. Their appetite is insatiable for PC items
    ————————————————————————-
The righties are despicable. 99% arrogant White dudes that think it’s their right to decide what is racist to people who aren’t white.

    —————-

I still don’t understand why it is a right – left issue. It is either racist or it isn’t. If it was universally considered racist then “righties” would be behind changing it. If it was universally considered to be not racist, then “lefties” would be fine to leave the name as is. The argument is really if the name is racist or not.

  83. Regardless, the video is effective. I would love to see the name change happen while Bruce Allen is the GM. He absolutely despises liberals and makes his politics well known when it’s not even necessary.

  84. janvanflac says:Jun 10, 2014 11:22 AM

George Preston Marshall, who named the team, was an avowed racist. He certainly didn’t consider it a term of endearment.

    ————–

Wow… I never even had looked at that history.

    This is from Wikipedia:

Marshall has gained infamy for his intractable opposition to having African-Americans on his roster. According to professor Charles Ross, “For 24 years Marshall was identified as the leading racist in the NFL”.

  85. Get over it…. Nothing about The Redskins was racist for 75 yrs, now we’ve got people who get on a band wagon because they have no life…. Do something constructive with your time like getting the politicians to do right by all Americans not just a few special interest groups…

  86. Just think of all the money being wasted between this ad, Snyders PR & Legal fees and the money we’re paying any politician to take time out his day to talk about this

  87. The Redskin has nothing to do with the color of the native Americans skin, but the tribal paint to distinguish them selves with pride from the rest of the tribes as every other nickname they have embraced from within their own community.

The N-word by comparison was not a name that originated nor embraced by any Black , African, Negro or Colored or whatever American we are being referred to as being now days.

Who the hell has the right to label and categorize people and decide what they should be called.

Redskins are not real skin colors and was not used to denote any negativity.

There is no such thing as a white skin human being, so for whites only was a myth turned into an accepted reality for exclusivity and denial of different color of people coming together as one.

The only thing that was white was the sheets that were worn over their deviant evil doing heads.

Amos and Andy were originally 2 of those who made fun in black face of a nation of people who had been enslaved, tortured, raped and murdered.

All of this foolish bantering going on trying to make a case for ignorance while the real issues are being addressed by the very person who is tagged as the bigot and racist.

Deal with restoration of the native American impoverishment and neglect that continues to be ignored by the insensitive real bigotry that’s looking for a scapegoat sacrifice at the expense of Daniel Snyder.

Even if the name of the team was changed for whatever reason the same people will still be the same and the reservation conditions won’t change.

What this debate has brought to the serface is the shame of America’s bigotry that has lasted for all of these centuries and nobody cared about the American Indians whose primitive living has only been enhanced with the game money from the reservation casinos.

If it were not for the proud heritage being observed by the Washington Football Redskins, this bigotry would have remained in open hiding as though it does not exist.

Step up to the whole challenge or step off the name of the only team with an owner who has the guts to address the real issues with his resources and not just flapping a pair of trouble inciting lips and double tongue.

  88. welcome to whimpy america. used to be a country of proud, tough people. Now these are the types of things we spend our time on.

I pray the NFL doesn’t give in on this issue.

  89. All I see are colors flourishing.
I suppose something must be wrong with me, as color has no meaning, whatsoever to the heritage of a persons background. Do I see color because I am racist or insensitive? I don’t think so. But if you see fit to call me a racist, then be my guest. Your words only have as much power or meaning to them as I attribute to them.

  90. If I were Mr. Snyder I would go before congress and tell them that I WILL change the name of my team. Change it to the L.A. you fill in the rest. That would put an end to all this nonsense in a heartbeat.

  91. Call them the Washington Palefaces. It’s how the politicians look when they think about unfunded long term liabilities. Heck. Joe Biden would probably be honored if the name were changed to Palefaces.

This country is getting too soft. If we keep finding select words that are deemed “Racist” and trying to outlaw them more words will come up. Its 2014, its time to grow up and realize that its just words.

    —————

I guess the United States Constitution is just words then and so is the US Penal Code.

    Words are powerful.

    ———–

That was a really bad comparison. What does the US Constitution have to do with words that are associated with Racism? Absolutely nothing.

  93. Watched the commercial, and you have to admit, the Native American lobby is a billion times better at PR than the Redskins are. Based on their respective abilities to promote their sides of the issue, it is pretty much a dead bolt lock the team will end up changing the name, because they really really suck at promoting their side of the issue.

  94. If Snyder ends up having to change the name, he could have some real fun with this, and at the same time, put an end to this political correctness once and for all.

For example, given the fact that the Redskins reside in Washington, there are plenty of choices.

    Washington Crooked Politicians
    Washington Bureaucrats
    Washington Red Tape
    Washington National Debt

That would shut Congress up in a heartbeat, as well as their buddies in the press.

  95. jkulha86 says: Jun 10, 2014 9:20 AM

IF Native Americans view the term Redskin, the same way blacks view the N word, then yes it should be changed. It shouldn’t be changed because some politician wants everything to be politically correct.

    —————————————————————-

Completely agree, however please find me anyone that has used the term “Redskin” in an insulting fashion towards a Native American. No one uses the word except when they talk football and football alone, no one is using it like the N word. If I went to work today and used the word Redskin a dozen times no one would think twice about it, and they probably assumed I was talking football. If I used the N word a dozen times, 1. I wouldn’t get to a dozen times cause I’d get knocked out 2. I’d probably be sent home and maybe with my walking papers.

The fact is Redskin doesn’t have the respect the N word has as a derogatory word. Also when was the last time anyone here actually saw a Native American, besides going to a casino? With the Hispanic population growing everyday from Latino’s coming from all over the world, to Filipino’s and even people from bi-racial backgrounds (like myself, whose been mistaken for Native American, though my mother is black, and father is white) you could have run into a Native American today and never knew it. That’s a whole different realm of racism where you’d have to filter all the people that look like the group you hate and then proceed to hate them.

The name should stand if we as Americans really wanted to change the name, it should have been changed decades ago, not because RG3 thrusted Washington into the limelight 2 years ago. Cause no one cared about the rights and feelings of Native American’s when Rex Grossman, Patrick Ramsey, Shane Mathews, Danny Wuerffel, Tim Hasselback, or Jason Campbell was their QB.

  96. Most of you choose a sports team name over the wishes of a real group of people…pathetic!

  97. So the Atlanta Pecker Woods would be okay with everyone or the Carolina Crackers. This is a derogatory name to a large group of people who were already destroyed by rich white men once. It’s a game that we love, I love, but changing the name and keeping the logo is not earth shattering and it will maybe give solice to a group of people that are Americans.

  98. So rather than allocate the “significant investment” in social programs that would actually assist the native population, let’s use it to p!ss and moan about a sports team’s name.

As someone of Irish decent and Catholic faith, I somehow find a way to support Notre Dame in spite of their “offensive” mascot and how it “portrays my kind” as angry leprechauns (sarcasm intended).

God help America and its demise at the hand of the PC agenda. Next we’ll be told if Snyder sells the team to a group of native-led investors, the team name can stand because “they’re allowed to use it”.

  99. For all those that support the name: You do realize Native Americans were the victims of mass genocide by our government right? If anything, I’m sure we could come up with a new name that honors Native Americans that sounds better than “that word”. I think we owe it to them. But hey! That would be asking the average American football fan to think of someone other than themselves. You people make me ashamed to be a sports fan.

  100. This is never going to go away until the left wing gets their way. Unfortunately, that’s how it always goes.

  101. To those who do not support changing the racist epithet because political correctness is being “shoved down their throat.” What about the Native Americans who do find it offensive, are they not having it “shoved down their throats?” Still waiting for one, just one, salient argument supporting this racist mockery. The Sun will be a cold ember adrift in a universe full of cold embers when that happens.

  102. If it would of been Blackskins everyone would of had a problem with it , and the name change would of happened immediately .

  103. Let me further explain this phrase: “Racists use the term in a racist way”

If someone called me a “cracker”, that would likely be a reference to my race, however, that is not how I use the term. When I say cracker, I mean baked item that is thin and crispy. When I say “Redskin”, I don’t mean Native American, that is the wrong use of the word. If I did, then that would be racist of me, but it doesn’t mean the word is.

  104. I’m going to keep saying this…why isn’t anyone saying anything about the UNC Tarheels? That’s way more racist than Redskins.

  105. The Washington Forgottens. Has a nice ring to it. But keep the logo or we’ll forget who the Forgottens are.

  106. Nearly 45 years ago our species and specifically this nation achieved the improbable. We put a man on the Moon. I used to think nothing was impossible, perhaps that was naive. It is profoundly disappointing to witness the righteous indignation expressed by those who support the perpetuation of this racial epithet. It cannot be understated, the loathing and disgust I have for those who choose to defend such a morally bereft controversy. Apathy is one thing, but the narcissism it takes to completely ignore the perspective and opinion of a growing minority is practically unfathomable. Your mother’s must be very proud.

  107. Same argument by the same. The name being offensive is argumentative. The Washington Redskins stance on it, is definitely offensive. The Snyders mock the government, the people and the fans. This will never go away, And I think they enjoy the publicity, or even Snyder enjoys the fight.

  108. The ad was sponsored by a group of Native Americans who are offended by the word “redskins”. Is that not the definition of racism? …You know when a group of people is offended by a word that is used to describe them?

  109. The drama deepens. Weren’t people just complaining that Dan Snyder hired a lobbyist. What do you think the National Congress of American Indians is? What do you think this commercial is?

In between lobbying for indian casinos they are lobbying for the name change which is drawing massive donations from the PC crowd for them.

This country is hilarious. We committed genocide on the Indians, yet we are up in arms because we are using a previous slang term for indians as a positive symbol for a sports team.

  110. This country is way too damn soft. they are the washington redskins no ifs ands or buts about it. anyone who doesnt like it needs to look up the term “racism” a couple more times

  111. time to declare war on the libs and the ignorant

    Hail to the Redskins!

complete ill fortune to all voicing opposition to Redskin name and trying to invent an issue to suit their political needs… you people (trying to be nice) are either fools or tools and a complete disgrace to America…. take your PC and ignorance and shove it up your ….

Native Americans and Redskins fans unite and fight these cretins…

    Hail to the Redskins!

  112. I hope this becomes a tipping point and starts a war… It is time we ALL declare war on PC and the Lib political agenda and playing on ignorance…

  113. Hmmmm…it didn’t bother these drunk moochers for decades bu now that being PC is en vogue, suddenly they have a problem with it.

I’m shocked they’ve been able to stay sober long enough to even continue their bitching.

  114. And exactly whom is doing the vast majority of the sniveling and pee whining about this issue? Take a look in the mirror politicallyincorrect, carryingconcealed. It’s lowlife’s like you who give rightwing conservatism not just a bad name, it willfully demonstrates the nutjobs notorious ignorance. It’s absurd, how laughable the banality of most of the comments are from you knee-jerk jukebox’s. You probably don’t know a damn think about football either.

  115. As a Skins fan, I have to say this may be the first building block in making me understand the stance that the name could be wrong.

Often on here people make sweeping generalizations about their stance. If the Skins name should be changed then it is only more pressing that Oklahoma change its name. If one is offensive, then both are!

The only difference is that the Skins is a company owned by a man opposed to a government entity. The govt. name must be changed first! I must questions why this is ignored and I think stems from a lot of frustration from Pro-skins-name fans. It is false targeting.

So before I get falsely deleted … again … I am seeing the reasoning behind changing the name … but, I expect anyone with this view to also despise the name Oklahoma and the intentionally mocking Chief Wahoo. To do otherwise only proves it is a vendetta against a specific team and not truly caring about the Native American culture.

  116. Saw the commercial tonight. Names and pictures of tribes and famous American Indians there protest was to “change the mascot”!

They want NFL to change the Indian mascot? Good luck with that. Shot a blank right there.

And I thought Snyder was bad at PR

  117. If they really want to get rid of the offensive name, why not just call them the Redskins, and drop the Washington?

  118. LOL at the transparency of this “made up” tribe and its political puppet masters attempt to speak for Native Americans… amazing….. no one ever heard of these guys, they are casino grafters in bed with the Libs/Dem politicians w/ NO concern for Native Americans

Nice ad…. until the garbage and misguided agenda at the end…. if only, this was directed at something to actually help Native Americans… and not the casino owners in bed with the lib politicians…. if only…

I truly hope Native Americans do not allow themselves to be used here and stand up to this issue…. demanding real and appropriate help and not allowing political hacks to try and create an issue from a name that Native Americans know as one creating positive images and pride…. and that has NEVER in my 40 years as a Redskins fan EVER been used as a slur or w/ racial overtones

I hope this is a galvanizing issue for us ALL to fight political correctness and outright ignorance … it is time we recognize that the Libs and their agenda are the greatest impediment to America

    Hail to the Redskins!

  119. This is a great time for real Native Americans, not casino owning sellouts, to demand action beneficial for Native Americans and to actively fight the libs and become active Redskins fans….

The people behind this have NO concern for Native Americans… only for politics and personal gain

  120. I would sue for using my teams helmet w out permission! The name is NOT going to change! The NFL has stated it is NOT a slur! Liberals get OVER it!!! Hail to the REDSKINS!!! Signed…..Cowboys fan!

  121. I kow for a fact the name doesn’t offended the people who claim to be offended.

  122. Hail to the REDSKINS.

If someone needs the etymology, here ya go – Google: A Linguist’s Alternative History of ‘Redskin’

So in answer to those complaining if the term is racist, I’m going to have to say no. If someone used it that way at some point, I’m sorry. It wasn’t overwhelmingly accepted as such, wasn’t intended as such by the team or fans and hasn’t been thought of that way by them, either. But, again, that’s just my view to be accepted or dismissed as any see fit.

The whole concept of disparaging the name by the people who are doing it, to me has always seemed kind of backwards anyway. I mean, in the classic comparison of Cowboys and Indians, the Cowboys were viewed as the heros for ages. The same people who are complaining now (and I realize I’m generalizing here, I don’t mean every. single. last. complainant) are the ones who view the Indian as the tragi-hero. So you’re going to chastise the team that agrees with you and celebrates the majesty of the brave warrior defending his life and people?! Pure nonsense.

Finally – If you are going to insist on the Redskins changing their name, then I’m going to have to insist you get the State of Oklahoma and the Yankees (among others) to change theirs, too.

  123. I guess we should all be able to literally say anything about anyone, regardless of how hurtful, inappropriate, profane, disgusting or otherwise offensive, and no one should ever be able to complain about it…or something. Right guys? Oh, and it should be regarded as an enforceable legal trademark even though federal law expressly prohibits it.

  124. The NFL is going to penalize teams when players use the N-Word.
Easy fix… If every player started calling white guys whiteskins and black guys blackskins the referees will throw the flag for being racist.
After one week the NFL would have to change the name. The same way that the NFL had to go back to real referees after the “inaccurate reception.”

  125. I am a half Native American raised on a reservation and the name “Redskin” is offensive and don’t think I know one person who would tolerate it being said to their face.

Read up on the history – look up residential schools, north american genocide, effects of colonialism and you could understand how a hate-filled name could remain public for so long unopposed. Those that think its some political issue its not. It is about now people being educated and standing up for what is right.

  126. Snyder change the name. This will not stop.It wasn’t ever cool to begin with so why cling to this outdated moniker?

  127. LOL What is the matter with these goofs? Read up: 99% of the tribes love the names that reflect their proud existence in their country. Stop this name change nonsense.

The Indians and Braves plus Redskins gives them identity with sports that they love and follow. Why is that so hard to understand?
