Andre Roberts wants to return punts and kicks for the Redskins

When wide receiver Andre Roberts signed with the Redskins as a free agent, the expectation was that he’d join Pierre Garçon to form the team’s starting receiver tandem.

Then came DeSean Jackson’s release in Philly and subsequent arrival in Washington, an unexpected change in circumstances that bumped Roberts down the depth chart back to the third receiver spot he hoped he’d left behind in Arizona. Part of Roberts’ response to that shift has been to talk to special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica about expanding his portfolio in that area.

“He has me doing punts and kicks right now,” Roberts said, via CSNWashington.com. “I would like to be the kick returner and the punt returner but, you know, everybody doesn’t get what they want. Preferably, probably kick returner.”

Roberts had some experience with both while with the Cardinals, but it’s never been a regular part of his job description in the NFL. He should still see plenty of work at receiver, which could allow the Redskins to extract even more value from the four-year deal they reached early in free agency.
