Wide receiver David Gettis showed a lot of promise as a rookie with the Panthers in 2010, but injuries brought his career screaming to a halt.

Gettis will now try to get things back on track with a different NFC South club. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Gettis has signed a contract with the team after a successful tryout during last week’s minicamp.

Gettis caught 37 passes for 508 yards and three touchdowns during his first NFL season, but a torn ACL and hamstring injuries have limited him to two games and zero catches over the last three seasons. His chances of rebounding probably aren’t great after so much time on the bench, but the Buccaneers have a fairly open depth chart at the position after Vincent Jackson and first-round pick Mike Evans.

Sixth-round pick Robert Herron, Louis Murphy, Chris Owusu, Lavelle Hawkins and Skye Dawson are some of the other wideouts vying for roles and the ability to help on special teams will likely loom large in the final choices for the 53-man roster. The Buccaneers also waived linebacker Steven Jenkins and tackle Emmett Cleary.
