Tom House says half the league’s quarterbacks are seeking him out

Former Major League pitcher and pitching coach Tom House has branched out to football.  And his roster of quarterback clients is increasing.

Dramatically, potentially.

“I’m a little hesitant about saying everybody who’s coming in because I’m not quite sure whether some of the organizations know their kids are coming here,” House told Alex Marvez and Zig Fracassi of SiriusXM NFL Radio.  “But we probably have about half the NFL quarterbacks that are out there are at least making inquiries on some phase of either mechanics or functional strength.”

House disclosed that, in addition to Brady, House will be working with Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel and Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley.

As to House’s most famous client, the pitcher-turned-pitching-coach-turned-quarterback coach said that Brady came to House because Brady believed he had lost some of his distance and accuracy.  (But but but but what about those who insist that Brady is the same as he ever was?)

House is helping Brady get the most that he can out of his abilities for as long as possible, with a goal (as House explained to Marvez and Fracassi) of playing until he’s 43 to 45 years old.  House could be setting himself up to have a thriving quarterback coaching business for that long or longer, especially if his clients get results.

Or, more accurately, if his clients think they’re getting results.

  1. I can only hope that House is helping Cassell get the most out of his abilities, as limited as they are. If Cassell is the answer, the question must be, “Why did the Vikings finish in last place again?”

  2. House went to USC… He knows all their is to know about not having any arm strength ..

  3. Love Brady, but I can’t see Belichick trotting him out there in his 40’s.

If he can make it that far he’ll probably have to finish up somewhere else.

I was wondering why I never heard of House as a player, then I noticed the uniform.

  4. Good for him, it’s not like there are a lot of people or places to turn to for NFL QBs that aren’t getting what they need from the teams that pay them millions of dollars. If you are an aspiring QB and you don’t have the support given to you, then it’s on you to go seek out those that can help you take your game to the next level. Just get it done and get the help you need to be your best!

  5. Cassell isn’t terrible first off. He’s never been more than serviceable though. He’s never intended to be “the answer” he’s a stop gap until the rookie is ready to go. That could be week 1 (unlikely), halfway through the year or the beginning of next year’s OTAs. Teams always want a veteran presence when dealing with a rookie and until he grabs the job we need someone serviceable in there.

  6. I’m sure the Red Sox wish there was an “arm coach” back in House’s playing day …… very pedestrian pitcher.

We’re all wondering how HE ended up being a “throwing guru”.

  7. Why waste your time on a Vikings QB? Lost cause. Hey House, get your money up front from Cassel.

  8. Brady still looked sharp last year, and if that many other QBs are reaching out to House then I’m not the only one that noticed.

  9. By the way, all you Belichick haters; while you’re ragging on how much Cassel sucks, keep in mind that the Patriots went 11-5 with that guy.

    Just saying.

There are VERY FEW bright packer fans, and you are NOT one of them.

Even if you did 5 minutes of homework, you would know that Cassell was actually either the starter or finisher of all Vikings wins last year.

Last year was a direct reflection of Ponder.

I would say, that you should know that.

    But, obviously you don’t.

Now, you need to worry about your porous D and a weak shoulder on a certain QB, that is your entire franchise.

Every post you make is about US.

    WE ARE IN YOUR HEAD!!!!

    And, we love it!!!!!!!!!!

  11. For all the devoted Tom Brady fans that still see him as a top 5 QB, I’m reminded that he had his lowest yardage and TDs since 2006. He also had his lowest pass completion % since 2003 (he finished 20th in the NFL).
So why did Belichick draft Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2nd round? Maybe Tommy at 37 sees Tom House as his best chance to recapturing old form.
Alas, old Yorrick, I knew him well….

  12. For those who aren’t stuck in 2007, it’s quite obvious that Brady hasn’t had a strong deep ball for several years now. Everybody always wants to blame his receivers, but even Brady himself now admits this decline.

This season will be Brady’s last, at least as a Pat.

And let me remind you, he led a team with a pedestrian group of receivers, no name running backs, a DECENT offensive line, and a depleted defense to the afc championship game, and nearly a comeback in that same game. Just like Florio, throwing Brady under the bus doesn’t do anything. You wish your favorite team had Brady as their qb, and that’s a Guarantee. Brady, without any weapons looked sharper than Manning did with all of those weapons. You give Manning, Brady’s 2013 weapons (minus Gronk) along with the depleted defense, he wouldn’t have beaten the Colts. Let me remind you that, buddy.

  14. About “Why House?” Not all the people who understand something intrinsically and are good at teaching are good at doing that something. Ted Williams was an exception. But think about Einstein. After he came up with the Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, it took him ten years instead of a few to extend that to The General, because he sucked as a mathematician.

Famous quote: “Those that can – do; those that can’t – teach.”

  15. And I also think that Belichek would have trouble blocking his sister, but that does not mean he isn’t a fabulous coach.

Do you know anything about his receiving corps last year? Injuries to Gronk. Loss of Hernandez and Welker. Rookie WRs who were on and off injury list.

  17. I wouldn’t want someone yapping to the media that I am one of his clients. That said, Brady is thrown to the wolves at age 36. Let’s see how he does this season. Better yet, put a stellar cast around him year after year. Stats are for losers, I’d still take Brady any day of the week, esp. in big games.

  18. Wow! What nonsense. I say genetics and born-kinesiology (and God if that is your way) are the only science here. What a scam… Too bad we don’t need FDA approval for this (sarcasm). Hey, Brady! I have a pill that is guaranteed to make you play well into your 40’s. It is only $79.95 for a 60 day supply with an automatic shipping subscription plan that is impossible to camcel. America! Home of the Capitalists and the Gullible they prey on.

Hey ugldino, not only is Tom Brady still Tom Brady (as Bostonian13 says above), but if you’re going to quote Shakespeare, at least quote him accurately….it’s “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio”

  20. House didn’t say anything about declining skills. Brady came to him because his mechanics were out of whack, hurting his accuracy and long passing(which he’s never been great at) Just as Brady had done his whole career with Tom Martinez, when he was alive. I never even the most die-hard Pats fan say Brady’s the same as say, 2007. But with a decent, intact WR/TE group this yr watch what happens. Still top 4/5. Who would you put in there if not Brady? Rivers? Roethlisberger? Newton? Wilson? Luck? Don’t see it. Not yet, anyway

  21. Yep, every time Brady struggles, it’s always somebody else’s fault, isn’t it?

  22. Brady has been doing this for years. His first personal QB coach passed away so he went to this guy. He set his goals on the thing that maybe takes the most effort physically, which makes sense for a guy approaching the age of physical decline. So what? Good for Tom. I hope he gets the results he is looking for. If he does, and that gets paired with some receivers that can get open and catch deep balls, that will be a bonus in addition to the fact that he can already get you to a Championship game with a reasonably talented team around him.

  23. Ironic that all these qbs are seeking out a baseball guy in an era where pitchers arms are blowing out at a rate never seen before in the history of the game.

  24. Brady is perhaps the greatest QB of all time, but I am reminded that he also has some of the cookiest fans in the NFL. Tom is like a religious figure to them and they genuinely expect St Thomas of San Matteo to play for another 6 or 7 years. While other players grow older and their power diminishes, Tom is different. Age shall not weary Tom.
House has been engaged to try to help an aging QB statistically on the decline. Maybe they should also engage Dr House from the TV series and get his diagnosis.

  25. Good point about why PFT and others keep ragging on Brady when Peyton Manning keeps throwing accurate rainbows that did not work against Seattle and would have cost Denver the game against New England except for subpar games from Brady, the receivers, the offensive line, and injuries to their key DBs. In all fairness to Denver’s luck, the Patriots were caught with too many injuries to crucial and essential players against Denver and not one of the backups stepped up and had a capable game in place of the starter. Yes, Denver won that game, but the Patriots were too banged up to make it a game.

  26. megahead goes and visits saban with his OC, and when questioned about why he did it when it’s against the rules in the offseason, answered “is it against the rules to try to get better?” So everyone, including the media, bowed down to Mr. nfl royalty. But Brady goes somewhere to improve his accuracy, he’s called garbage, in decline, and no longer a top 5 qb. Btw, he’s 36 not 38.

  27. Can you work on the part of Matt Cassel’s brain that won’t let him make a decision in the pocket?

  28. I understand Eli manning has secretly been working out under House direction. Mostly working on his mechanics. Is that really going to help a human turnover machine. 42 ints. In 34 games. By far the most overrated QB in football. If he played in the era of Unitas, Starr, Lane, Eli would have lasted all of 3 years with the way they ripped n blasted the QBs back than. Every time he gets hit, the first thing he does is look at the ref for a penalty. It was a freak catch off a helmet, n a dropped pass by Welker that gave the giants two wins they never should have gotten. Clearly the Pats were the better team. It’s early giant fans, so u have time to start making excuses for him n the giants as they stumble n fumble.

  29. Tom House started his pitching coach career with the Rangers in 1985, oddly enough he had the pitchers throwing footballs – Go figure! Nolan Ryan mentioned him in his induction speech into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I know this wasn’t directed at me, but NFL players were polled a few years ago about which fan base was the most knowledgeable. NFL players thought Green Bay fans were the most intelligent by far, grabbing 26% of the vote.

#2 through #5 of the most knowledgeable fans were:

    Pittsburgh 14%

    New York 9%

    Philadelphia 8%

    Dallas 7%

  31. Ironic that all these qbs are seeking out a baseball guy in an era where pitchers arms are blowing out at a rate never seen before in the history of the game.

This has far more to do with overuse than mechanics.
The number of kids coming out of high school needing tommy john because they have been overpitched has nothing to do with mechanics and correct form. There has been report after report, study after study about proper rest for a pitcher that is completely ignored in the lower levels. This is the real cause of the tommy john epidemic in the majors, kids that are a single sport specialist working a schedule that is for a 25 year old athlete. The wear and tear is never allowed to rest or heal.
