Brandon Flowers agrees to one-year contract with Chargers

Brandon Flowers is staying in the AFC West but heading to San Diego.

Flowers has agreed to a contract with the Chargers. It’s a one-year deal, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports.

For Flowers, who was cut by the Chiefs 11 days ago, signing a one-year contract is a way of betting on himself. He’ll hit free agency next year with a chance to cash in on a big contract.

The 28-year-old Flowers has already received one big contract, having signed a five-year, $50 million contract with $22 million guaranteed in 2011. Flowers only played three of the five years on that deal. Now he’ll play one year in San Diego and see where the market is in March.

  1. Awesome! When they play Denver, or anyone else for that matter, give the points!

  2. Pardon my ignorance on the matter but why did the Chefs cut him? He was their best corner and it’s pretty late to be cutting him for cap reasons.

I’m not really what the Chefs are doing this offseason, it doesn’t seem like they’ve tried to make their team better in any way.

  3. Lol, typical Chargers signing a guy past his prime, this dude got crisped on the daily last season. Burnt, torched and roasted until he was replaced by a rookie UDFA CB. This guy will be Derek Cox 2.0 (past his prime)

Smart by Flowers by betting on yourself. Cause you know damn well San Diego not the place you want to be to win.

You notice he didn’t want to go to crime central in Baltimore….smart guy. He wants to win and play in a safe civilized city.

  5. good signing by the chargers and im sure that they have a mutual agreement that he will give chargers first dibs if he does well or maybe thye extend him during season…good singing none the less becasue if he tanks the chargers wont be locked in…good for both sides!!i knew he was gonna sign with the chargers once he cancelled his other trip to pittsburgh!

  6. The Chargers’ secondary should be pretty solid now. Verrett and Flowers sounds like a pretty good cornerback tandem

  7. Joeflacoallday is obviously a mad ravens fan poor baby it’s ok you guys aren’t going to suck because you don’t flowers it’ll be because you guys just stink loser chargers all day son

not even …cox was given a 4 year deal..this is a low risk signign by the chargers!! alot of corners get burnt when their defensive frotn isnt getting pressure on the qb which the chiefs werent from midseason on!!

  9. I love this signing. Chargers are legit. About time!

Paying a short, slow oft injured CB over 10 mill per isn’t smart football. There were a ton of Pioli mistakes to rid the team of, and this was one of them.

Unlike the donkeys, we apparently have to abide by the cap rules.

  12. Well, my concerns about the defense have been shored up.
As long as the O-like can stay healthy and perform comparable to last year, we will give ourself a good chance to win games.

Brandon Flowers will forever regret the day he didn’t sign the with Future Dynasty Minnesota Vikings.

He will miss out on an opportunity to win multiple Super Bowls.

Now he’s in a place, that’s never even won a Super Bowl.

Funniest comment on PFT “Now he’s in a place, that’s never even won a Super Bowl.” First when have the Vikings won a superbowl and second it’s thats not that’s

  15. I’m a die hard Chiefs fan and like Brandon Flowers and in no way is this sour grapes but the guy has lost a step, too short to cover the taller Wideouts in today’s nfl. The image I remember from last year was when he was locked up with Dez Bryant and he got torched all day along with a smaller T.Y Hilton

  19. The Chargers need all the help they can get at the CB position. It’s not an embarrassment of riches there.

To the “In Telesco We Trust” crowd, be prepared for
    disappointment

  20. He got beat because of the scheme, and playing against bigger targets in the slot in Sutton’s system made him look like he regressed. The guy hasn’t lost a thing. Reminds me of Antoine Winfield lite.

  21. For Flowers, who was cut by the Chiefs 11 days ago, signing a one-year contract is a way of betting on himself.
    _____
Or he got on the market and didn’t see anything better. He’s 32 and didn’t particularly play well last year despite what you hear from the uninformed. It’s not going to be a better contract waiting a year later when he’s 33.

  22. And the seahawks crushed Denver, you haven’t a clue what the Chiefs are doing. I think with a team full of criminals you would worry about them instead of Kansas City.
I was hoping Flowers would have signed elsewhere besides the AFC West. This was a bad move on our part and I will tell you why; Reid’s system is different from what he was use to and second our safety’s played like crap and do to that, one is now with Houston.
Being it’s a fact the entire secondary had an off year, Flowers will again be a pro-bowler with the Chargers and theres nothing more dangerous than a skilled player with a chip on his shoulder. Good luck, Brandon not that you will need it but good luck anyway!!

  23. @ thepftpoet : LOL .. dude seriously .. I KNOW a Vikings fan didn’t just talk crap about the Chargers not going to a superbowl .. & you called the Vikings a “Future Dynasty” .. ??!! LOL .. EVERY team has a “Future Dynasty” at some point.. Flowers wanted to be with a team that that has a shot at the playoffs/ SB .. and trust that the VIkings are NOT EVEN CLOSE ..

  24. It IS “that’s.” The apostrophe means “that’has.” But thank you for the grammar lesson. SMH

  25. I guess that multi-year contract worth twice as much the queens offered was laughed at and who could blame him.

  26. From a Chiefs fan – and trying to be as neutral as possible – SD fans need to realize that Flowers isn’t the player he was 2-3 years ago. Scheme? Eh, maybe partially, but he didn’t stand out as a good corner last season in a team that had issues in the secondary. I was shocked at how many times he got beat. He just isn’t the player he was.
Having said that – do I wish he was still a Chief? Yeah because our secondary is thin. He just isn’t the Flowers of old.

  27. PFTPoet never disappoints, one of the best trolls on teh interwebs – ALWAYS gets people wound up and angry responses. A true master!

  28. Thinking that he could have had a better deal from someone else but chose to stay in the AFC West because maybe he’s carrying a grudge against the Chiefs. Loved your time in KC but understand that things change. Best of luck, Brandon.

  29. Even with the AFC West playing a very tough NFC West, the Chargers will still make the playoffs. The only question is, will Brandon Flowers help the team improve from 9-7 to 10-6 or 11-5?
    .
Looking at some raw numbers, the Chargers were a top five team offensively. THEY GOT BETTER. DJ Fluker, Keenan Allen, and Ladarius Green, all rookies, played well last year and should do the same this year. Ryan Matthews, is healthy. Rivers will dish out 3-5 yard passes all day long, and then throw bombs for TDs. One of the best passers in the league will have arguably the best dual TE threat in the league, along with a very good WR corps, and each of SDs RBs can catch out of the backfield.
    .
Defensively, the Chargers were middle of the road against the run and bottom 5 against the pass. THEY GOT BETTER. Corey Luiget, Melvin Ingram, Dwight Freeney were all hurt last year and look ready to play. With the addition of Verrett and Flowers, the only way to go is up.
    .
I’m not sure how anybody can argue against any of these facts.

  30. pftpoet isn’t riling people up, he simply likes a team that has been terrible for a very long time, and is in complete denial about their chances of getting better soon. It’s gotta be tough to be a Vikes fan in the 21st century, they would drive me to the brink of insanity, too.

  31. Decent pick up for the Chargers. He may not be what he used to be but he is nice depth for the team. As a Broncos fan I see the Chiefs taking a step back and the Raiders, Chargers, and Broncos taking a step forward. Not necessarily in record but quality of the team. Not only did the Broncos have a great FA but they are getting back key starters like Clady, Moore, Wolfe, Vickerson, and Harris. All of which are key starters. AFC west is looking strong!

    ————————————————————————————————————

Apparently you don’t watch the Chiefs much. Flowers was the 4th best corner on the team after the draft.

You obv don’t follow contract info either.

  34. The signing of Flowers adds veteran depth to a young, talented, and potentially very good secondary. The pass defense and pass rush were not good for the Chargers last year, so this fills a need. He’s 28, so still physically still in his prime. And he knows the division having spent his entire career in the AFC West. Add him to the rookie Verrett, last year’s starter Wright, FA acquisition Ghee, Marshall, and last year’s rookie WIlliams and that’s depth. If the OLBs can stay healthy (unlike last year) this team will put a lot more pressure on the QB as well. Great pick-up.

  35. choo choo….oh yeah the superbowl express here we come ….i think now the chargers will go 16-0 or maybe at the very least 14-2….

  36. raiderapologist says:

    ================================

That’s ok, you’re probably just a childish Raiders fan. You probably walk around with all your Raiders garb on, don’t you? Got your Raiders hat on sideways? You see, usually, people who are fans of a certain team, are usually fans of the NFL in general.
    .
For instance, the NFL station has been showing all the great teams from the 60 and 70s, and I was thinking how cool it must be to be a Raiders fan (and a Cowboys fan, and Bengals fan, etc..) and witness the greatness of your particular team. But not you, Raiderapologist, you would rather other teams fail, right? I hope two things happen. First, I hope the Raiders do better this year, and I hope you grow up.
    .
    BOLTUP

  37. The Chiefs have not won anything meaningful in over 40 years. The Chargers have not won anything meamingful ever. Flowers’ journey is like being dumped by Sandra Bernhardt only to be picked up by Rhea Perlman.

  38. Great signing, esp getting him for 1 year, might get his best play as he works to restore his value.

  39. Who cares about actual football news? Could we get the latest news on the controversy surrounding the Washington team name?

Thanks and Hail to the Redskins.

  40. It is so funny to see how many haters there are. The truth is that a reported 10 of the 32 teams in the nfl had interest in flowers. How many other fee agents out there had 1/3 of the NFL wanting them on their team. I think that’s is telling enough, but hey what do I know? I for one am thrilled we picked him up, and will be even happier when he is PICKING off your quarterbacks. GO BOLTS!

  41. This is a very safe use of money. If BF does really well he’s entitled to another big day. I don’t mind that he’s potentially a rental if he makes us better now. Regardless the outcome this is a great move by TT. AJ you could learn a lot from TT that is if you can humble yourself enough to listen and learn knucklehead

  42. Pardon my ignorance on the matter but why did the Chefs cut him? He was their best corner and it’s pretty late to be cutting him for cap reasons.

I’m not really what the Chefs are doing this offseason, it doesn’t seem like they’ve tried to make their team better in any way.

He doesn’t fit their defense…they also need the 7.5 M cap room to sign Houston before camp and hopefully get something done with Smith during or after the season

  43. Scheme Scheme Scheme…
Flowers was playing MAN / PRESS coverage last season (not his strength), then he changed positions. That’s poor coaching (round peg/ square holes), not playing to your strengths…
Flowers is a very good off man / zone corner back (exactly what the Chargers use). SD has a very young defense with some very high draft picks getting ready to bloom (pun intended).
Injuries have been SD’s weakness and if they can stay healthy, expect BIG BIG things. A+

  44. Is it me, or is every Vikings fan delusional? I swear, no matter what the topic is, a vikings fan chimes in with most asinine thoughts and comments. Let’s be real vikings fans…you guys have made Adrian Peterson into todays version of Barry Sanders. Outstanding RB. Terrible team.

Good low risk signing by the chargers btw.

  45. riverhorsey: it’s June 24th I could see his contract being an issue at the beginning of March when the league year is starting and you need money to sign free agents, or June 1st when they can split it over 2 years, but free agency is done, the draft picks are signed, why did his contract become an issue on June 13th all of a sudden?

As to your 4th best cb comment, last year Chefs fans were bragging about him being the best shutdown cb in the game, if his contract isn’t a problem in the immediate term (and we’ve already established it wasn’t) why not bring him into camp and hope it was just a down year, if it wasn’t and he’s washed up cut him in at the end of August?

Now he goes to a rival and gets to go against the Chef O, and since they only throw screen passes he’s going to look like an absolute beast for those 2 games.

  46. As a Vikings fan, with comments like the one pftpoet made, I really wish that one of two things would happen:
1.) He would get banned from PFT and would not be allowed to post on the site again
2.) Move to another state and join another teams fan club.

You are a disgrace to our fans in Minnesota, and your delusions about the Vikings make everyone else delusional about Vikings fans.

  47. Flowers was the best slot corner the Chiefs had last year. He was moved inside not because he lost a step, but because Marcus Cooper can’t play slot. He did not get torched by TY Hilton in the playoffs (that was Dunta Robinson, watch the tape). With the inconsistent play at safety (Lewis) the Chiefs secondary was unstable as a unit for the last 8 games but it was not Flowers fault.

Chargers got a good one. Wish you luck Brandon.

  48. @ t500000t says:

I’m not sure how anybody can argue against any of these facts.

The only fact is EVERY team THINKS they got better. You won’t know if they REALLY got better until the season is over and you compare their 2014 record against their previous records.

  49. I love how fans every year think just they recognize the name that the player now puts them in contention then the regular season starts and…

  50. This guy is way overrated. The Chiefs kept the wrong Brandon a few years ago when they signed Flowers and let Carr go to Dallas. Flowers rarely gives effort and quits on plays when things aren’t going his way. Addition by subtraction for the Chiefs. SD fans beware. You will see…..

  51. As a KC Chiefs Fan, I do feel B Flowers is a traitor. He could have taken a cut in pay to remain a Chief. His play has fallen off sharply the last 2 years. Burned again and again. I am still a fan of his and will root for him when he is not lined up against the Chiefs. On those Days, I will be rooting for him to get Knocked Out. Go Chiefs!

  52. Peyton knows this guy.. Knows his bad habits and his weaknesses.. He’s not gonna be much more than a spectator against Denver this year.. Nothing’s changed..

More importantly…..how in the world is he a traitor? He got released.
