Rodgers thinks young quarterbacks of bad teams should sit and wait

AP

Nine years ago, the Packers used a first-round pick on quarterback Aaron Rodgers because Brett Favre already was nearly three years into his will-I-or-won’t-I-retire routine.

For the next three years, Rodgers sat the bench behind Favre, until the Packers pushed Favre early in the 2008 offseason to commit to whether he’d play that year, possibly (probably) knowing that the answer at that time would be no.

It was indeed no, even though he later changed it to yes.  By then, the Packers were all in with Rodgers, who was entering his fourth NFL season.

At the time, sitting a first-round rookie quarterback was the rule, not the exception.  Starting the same year Rodgers became the starter in Green Bay, the exception became the rule.

Rodgers thinks that, when a rookie quarterback is drafted by a bad team, the rule should revert to being the exception.

“Some of these guys who are going to bad teams are expected to play well right away,” Rodgers tells Dan Pompei of Sports on Earth.  “It’s hard to do that.  I’ve seen a couple guys able to do it.  [Ben] Roethlisberger was able to do it.  He had a team kind of around him.  [Joe] Flacco had some success early but he had a team kind of in place.  You go to a place that has some pieces and you can have some success early.  But if you go to a team that doesn’t have the pieces . . . it can really mess with your confidence.”

In a roundabout way, Rodgers essentially labels the teams that selected quarterbacks in the first round as not very good.  Including one he plays twice per year.

“When you see other quarterbacks who might have to play quickly like [Teddy] Bridgewater potentially in Minnesota and Johnny [Manziel] in Cleveland, who knows if their teams are ready enough to complement their skills?” Rodgers said, adding that what the Jaguars are doing with Blake Bortles “has a lot of merit,” presumably because the Jaguars otherwise don’t.

There’s a potential benefit to sitting and waiting.  Each year at the front of the career that the quarterback doesn’t play could become another year on the back end where he can.

“I do feel younger because of it,” Rodger said. “I think it extended my career.”

That may or may not be accurate.  Quarterbacks aren’t like running backs, whose wheels can come off at any given moment.  With rules premised on protecting passers, physical skills can last into the 40s.  The sooner a quarterback plays, the sooner his brain develops to the point where the quarterback potentially becomes the equivalent of a coach on the field.  Once that happens, the quarterback can enjoy an extended stretch of dominance and contention and opportunities to win championships and secure a legacy.

Besides, it’s easy for 30-year-old Rodgers to say he’s glad he sat for three years.  But what would young Aaron Rodgers have said in 2005, 2006, and 2007 while languishing behind a graybeard who couldn’t make up his mind about whether to keep playing?

  1. Teddy Bridgewater will have a more decorated career than Aaron Rodgers in the long run.

And he won’t lose so many first round games in the playoffs.

And he won’t do yoga & get injured every season.

This is just a sign that Aaron Rodgers is scared of the Minnesota Vikings taking over the division with Teddy Bridgewater and he knows the window is closing.

  2. I agree w/ Peyton; you learn best by playing. Now with the bad teams, yes the new QB sit 3-4 games or until out of playoff race. But get them game time experience this season.

  3. Sounds like Aaron is afraid of the changes coming in Minnesota.

Don’t worry Aaron, you’ll get used to it. Let me give a preview of something you’ll be hearing and seeing quite a bit of for years to come: “Bridgewater to Patterson ……. Touchdown!”

  4. It will never happen.

Teams have no patience, new coaches on bad teams don’t get 3-5 years to develop QB’s. It’s win now or go home.

  5. People either love Favre or hate him. Same with Ted Thompson and his specific way of doing things. (build through draft) Favre was never threatening to retire each year. He was using his only leverage to try to get Ted to sign some free agents and “go for it” in Brett’s last years in the league. Brett thought he deserved that. Ted didn’t, got sick of being put in that spot and moved on. You can say anything you want about not liking Favre, etc (and much may be fair) but you can never say that he didn’t give everything he had and left it all on the field. Rodgers was ready – no question. Just too bad that it all unfolded the way it did.

  6. 2014-2015 NFC North Final Standings:

    1. Minnesota Vikings: 11-5
    2. Chicago Bears: 9-7
    3. Detroit Lions 8-8
    4. Green Bay Packers 5-11

The cellar will be a common place for the Packers during the next decade.

  7. If you want the truth, go to the people that know. I trust his judgment. Who am I to say he’s not right? After all, I’m not a Viking fan.

  8. I totally agree with him. If they are on a good team, a team that can still win with the QB’s goal being “don’t make any huge mistakes”, I can see starting a rookie.

If the team (and specifically the O-Line) is awful, and the kid is going to get beat to death for 16 weeks, why start him? All I can see that doing is destroying the kids confidence.

  9. “I do feel younger because of it”

As opposed to how you felt in your previous life where you were also a QB but started your first year on a bad team, right ?

  10. Haha oh my, straight up calling a divisional rival a bad team. I like the stirring of the pot, but words have a way of coming back to bite you.

  11. Girls, girls, girls…

Rodgers has missed time a grand total of twice in his career which is much less than your beloved AP (who would likely welcome a first round loss in the playoffs as it would be a huge step forward for him).

  12. I have to disagree and this is purely from a financial perspective. There was no four year maximum contract with an option year when he was drafted. Coaches don’t have 3-5 years to develop a young QB. Even if they did, by year 4, you’ve already invested millions with absolutely little to no return. Then, he’s off another team as an UFA (if 5th year option is not taken) or on the street.

  13. I like Rodgers, but it’s very arrogant to say the QB should sit until his team gets better and is able to compliment his play.

A good RB doesn’t sit and wait for a star QB to lead the team, he just runs his ass off, takes hits, and tries to help the team win. Same with every other unsung position on the field.

Sorry if those early years will hurt your confidence, but you’re the best paid player on the field, so go earn it.

  14. So what you’re saying is that in another 10-12 years Matt Leinart will be awesome?

  15. An old and fragile QB who before last season started every single game but one. It’s amazing how dense people can be.

  16. Erin is right. But he forgot to add if you go to certain teams (Oakland, Cleveland or the Jags) your career is over.

Johnny Football will be out of this league in 5 years.

  17. It’s funny to see people bring up his playoff record and hold it against him rather than his horrendous defenses.

Or should we just forget that he has the highest post season career passer rating of all time?

  18. Teddy Casselwater will have the same career as Tavaris Jackson, John David Booty and Christian Ponder.

  19. He thinks this because he knows that playing a young QB is high risk, which means high reward, and if a ton of teams take that risk then some are going to hit the jackpot. It’s safer if nobody takes those big risks and play their game conservatively. This should motivate some teams to change their minds and get more aggressive with some of their key positional choices.

  20. Talking about bad teams publicly is really dumb. The difference between the best team in the NFL and the worst team in the NFL is small. Seattle went from being a Super Bowl participant in 2005 to a team with a losing record 2007-2011 to a great team in 2012 and a Super Bowl winner in 2013. Things change fast in the NFL. A bad team today might be a great team tomorrow because of that young QB they just got. Just because GB has been decent since Rodgers has been there, doesn’t meat they will get better again and get back to the Super Bowl.

  21. but but but but but he has a high post season passer rating!!!!!!! He also has a high rating of getting thrashed in the playoffs!!!! Get my drift!!! yeah thougt so…

  22. It’s a dumb argument to begin because no NFL owner (in today’s NFL) is going to spend a high draft pick on a potential franchise QB and have him “sit”. The Browns can throw all that crap out there about Manziel sitting all they want but just wait until week 7 or so and I bet he’ll be the starting QB in week 8.

  23. Vikings fans are entering the third quarter of their competitive football season. The draft and free agency made them the best team in the NFC once again, they killed everyone in OTAs. They look fierce coming into minicamps and then finally the NFL preseason is the Vikings fourth quarter. It looks again like they’ll come through all four quarters ranked number 1 as they enter the 16 game Vikings playoffs only to be knocked out by week 8 once again. But hey, there’s always next offseason!

  24. Hey, even Mark Sanchez made the AFCCG as a rookie when the NYJ had a real good defense. So, Rodgers has a point.

  25. I guess it worked for Rogers because our Packers still had Bret. Not sure other teams have the same luxury. I don’t blame any team for putting a guy out there to play right away. Worked for MY GUY Russle Wilson too!

  26. Hard to disagree with Rodgers. I like that he gives straightforward well-thought out answers rather than all the same old regurgitated vanilla crap.

  27. Comparing a RB starting right away to a QB is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard of. Sentiment of a casual football fan. The QB’s responsibilities and mental responsibility are 10x what a RB has to do. And if the QB doesn’t have the system mastered and the game slow down for them trying to learn on the fly on a crappy team they get the hook and the team moves on before they ever get a chance. If teams would commit to a QB for 3-4 years and take their lumps before moving on that would be one thing…but that rarely happens.

  28. The vikings Offense is better than Greenbay in every aspect except the QB so if Teddy is any good then they could be very dominant.

Better O-Line, better running back, better tight end, similar WR talent.

  29. Vince watches over the NFL and ensures that no one unworthy ever gets his trophy.

He begrudgingly allowed the bears to win one, but this was more of a payback for George Halas helping them out way back when.

Also, the bears had an outstanding defense and the best running back in the league. The Vikings have never had either of those.

  30. It’s amazing to see how many butthurt Vikings fans there are who are tired of watching Rodgers destroy their team on a regular basis while they wait for him to turn 40 and fake retire so they can finally get their franchise QB.

  31. Manziel should & will sit if Hoyer is winning, why would any teams fans/owner/coaches care if a first round pick is sitting? Wins are all that matter!

  32. Rodgers has missed time a grand total of twice in his career which is much less than your beloved AP (who would likely welcome a first round loss in the playoffs as it would be a huge step forward for him).

umm last time i checked rbs take way more of a pounding than qbs, ap has played 7 seasons and i believe has missed 5 or so games. rodgers has played 6 seasons and missed 7 last year and 1 or 2 due to concussion several years before

  33. If anyone should not be sitting on his hands for three years, it’s Bridgewater. Without air and sunshine they would simply dry up.

  34. Better O-line? Like the one that allowed more sacks last year than Green Bay? LOL Similar WR talent? LMAO Slightly better RB, but Lacy is the real deal. And any idiot knows that having an elite QB is always 10x more important than any other factor when it comes to winning.

  35. Rookie QBs can learn by playing, but I strongly believe that if they have a bad team around them, they won’t learn a thing by playing. All they’ll learn is about how receivers run bad routes and offensive linemen fail to protect them.

  36. It’s unfortunate that a quality RB like Adrian Peterson won’t get a ring. But this will likely be his last year with the Vikings given his heavily inflated salaries and cap hit that come due and the de-valuing of the RB position. Like other future HOF players before him (Moss, Carter, Randle) the Vikings prefer to jettison them to allow them the opportunity to try to get a ring before they retire.

  37. Rodgers has just nine game-winning drives in five seasons.

All seven of those drives came against teams with losing records.

Two of the GWDs came against the 0-16 Lions (2008).

His last GWD in 2012 was at home against the Lions. Rodgers drove the team 59 yards…with seven running plays (handoffs).

The Packers did have two GWDs in 2013, against the Falcons and Cowboys. Matt Flynn started both games.

    #NotClutch

  38. Getting sacked, having no running game and a poor defensive unit will never make a great talent at QB a better player. Look at the number of talented rookie QB’s destroyed in Cleveland. It is a team sport after all else is said.

  39. If you actually look at the game winning drive scenario or 4th quarter comebacks for Rodgers, you would find that he actually brought the team ahead only to have the defense and ST’s lose it on the last drive and either having no time or under a minute for the last drive. A ton of these games actually happened his first year as a starter. Look up the video on youtube

But I applaud Vikings fans for trying to pretend he’s not a great QB. When you have sucked for so long with the exception of having a former Packer QB for one year, the jealousy is understandable. It’s tough always being the bridesmaid and never the bride.

  40. What does a Viking fan know about good qb play other than getting beat by one. Rodgers owns you!

  41. Aaron Rodgers 1st year as a starter he only threw for 4000+ yards, completed 64% of his passes, had 32 TD’s and a passer rating of 94.

The 6-10 record was clearly due to poor play at the QB position and not the horrible defense (22nd in points allowed) and ST’s (dead last in the NFL), right?

Vikings fans embarrass themselves over and over. It’s rather entertaining to watch though. I remember hearing for 17 years that Favre sucked and was overrated. Until they begged him to put on purple and Chilly played chauffer to him from the airport. Then he was one of the best QB’s ever.

  42. Bridgewater has a better offense around him than Rodgers does.

Better offensive line, better running game, better receivers. You couldn’t ask for a better set-up.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Bridgewater has a better QB rating this year than Rodgers.

  43. P. Manning, Brady, Brees & Rogers all going to HOF so who cares who is better at this time. Bridgewater will be joining the list of V. Young,J Russell, B. Quinn.

  44. As a Viking fan, I don’t take offense to anything Rodgers says about the Vikings and Bridgewater. He’s right. Right now, the Vikings are a question mark. They may have some good pieces in place but it’s hard to argue they were in fact 5-10-1 last year. Until it is proven they have what it takes (winning football games), nothing Rodgers says is wrong.

  45. The Packers gave up fewer sacks last year than the Vikings, rushed for more yards than the Vikings (on a pass first team) had better WR’s (with backup QB’s playing half the season)than the Vikings and their returning QB has the highest career passer rating in the NFL of any QB to ever play.

Yet somehow things are setup for a future bust like Bridgewater to have a higher passer rating than the all time NFL leader in career passer rating. #DelusionalVikingsFans

  46. I am enjoying the Rodgers apologists’ trying to come up with excuses about AR’s record when trailing in the 4th quarter.

Blame the defense? You miss the point of the stat.

The stat I referenced captures the number of times Rodgers has won a game when the Packers were trailing in the 4th quarter and AR had the ball in his hands with a chance to win. In other words, there was no opportunity for the D to “lose” the game after AR led the team down the field–it’s a measurement of wins when the Packers had the ball in the final possession and AR was in at QB.

The stats show AR does not come through in the clutch. He’s a wonderfully talented QB but when the game is on the line his record in GWDs is terrible.

Can’t blame poor defense for AR failing to lead his team to victory when he has the ball in his hands in the final possession of a game.

  47. LOL – check your history dude. The Vikings have won more divisional titles than GB. You guys crack me up. The Vikings have two down years out of three, and suddenly your memory fails and you call them a “perennial” last place team.

I guess that is true if you consider two out of 3 years “Perennial”.

  48. Everyone has a reasonable idea of what to expect from the Packers this year, in consideration of the few moves they’ve made and the returning starters from injury.

That is why the prognosticators have them in the Top Five for SuperBowl considerations.

The Vikings on the other hand are a crap-shoot. Nothing is known. I admire the blind faith, but please stop with the predictions. It’s all hoping, wishing, and praying for you guys, nothing more. Get a grip on reality.

  49. Bridgewater has a better offense around him than Rodgers does.

Please oh please tell me how you came to this conclusion and try it with facts.

    Here are a few facts:
1.The Packers offense finished 3rd while the lowly Vikings finshed 13th and this was without Rodgers for half the season.

    2. The Packers had more rushing yds than the hapless Vikings

    3. The Packs offensive line gave up less qb hits than the pathetic Vikings and that was with 2 Tackles lost for the season while the queens lost none.

    4. As far as receivers please! Jordy had about as many yds and tds as Jennings and Patterson combined.

  50. Packers fan: Championships are the only thing.

Vikings fan: Division titles are where it’s at!

Apologists really? Its hard to get a lot of come from behind wins when the qb has one of the best winning % since he has become a starter. When you are playing with a lead the opportunities are fewer wouldn’t you say? Is this the best you guys have? You are talking about the highest rated qb to ever play the game. Getting very petty.

  52. LOL – check your history dude. The Vikings have won more divisional titles than GB. You guys crack me up. The Vikings have two down years out of three, and suddenly your memory fails and you call them a “perennial” last place team.

I guess that is true if you consider two out of 3 years “Perennial”.

Check your history! Its 3 out of the last 4 years dude. So most would call that perennial.

  53. I have to agree with Rodgers on this. And like it or not Vikings fans, Rodgers is one of the best, if not the best QBs in the game. You don’t believe me? Play out the scenario in your head that Rodgers was all of a sudden a free agent and willing to go to the Vikes. Would you say no? Of course not! Just like when Favre came here you would love it and you would be trading in your AP jerseys for Rodgers jerseys!

Yes, we have an opportunity to develop a really good QB in Bridgewater, but we need to DEVELOP him. Aaron Rodgers became the best statistical QB for the Packers because he had a chance to develop and no unrealistic pressure put on him. And he does a great job managing the game and his team. Notice I said “team” there? That is why the Packers are good right now.

I for one am just excited to see us play in a different stadium, and outdoors for a few years, with some exciting players that are building a true “team” and a new coaching regime that includes a Norv Turner offense. Already, and without proof, that gives us something to look forward to. Plus, there will be a lot of hype with the new stadium…so at least this will be a fun ride.

Stop acting like we are going to come in and win the Central this year, as its not going to happen. GB is still on top of their game. But look at it this way: nobody stays on top for very long in this game, and just as GB is aging and declining, we will be getting better and more comfortable in our new system with our new crop of guys. Good timing.

Either way, could be a fun next 4-5 years for us, something you haven’t been able to say since the late 90s.

    Skol Vikings.

  54. I think it all depends on the team that the rookie is going to. If you look at the successful rookies that have played over the past few years, majority of them went to teams that already had a good core of players. Look at the talent around Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Russell Wilson and Nick Foles when they were rookies. They all had talent around them to help make them successful as rookies. With out that core you just risk ruining your QB.

  55. As a Browns fan, I couldn’t agree with Rodgers more… but unfortunately, most of the rest of my team’s fanbase are so stupid that many are howling to throw an untested, small, only-played-two-years-of-college-ball rookie onto the fire… once again…. because, you know, that worked so well with Charlie Frye and Brady Quinn and Brandon Weeden.

And then, when he falls on his face, those same dummies will complain about how the team threw him to the wolves far too soon.

    #factoryofstupid

  56. I guess the only 2 QB’s I remember starting first year, getting beat up and having tons of success were Aikman and Peyton. Both had brutal first years. Pretty small percentage when you think of all the guys who have started first year.

A-Rod is right, but most teams don’t have the luxury of having a Favre to sit behind.

  57. Can anyone believe this coot?
The guy is working on a black belt in yoga. Rumor is he assists ricky williams holistically researching the fountain of youth.
    The draft still burns him.
And prolonging his health, at any cost, to be the best will ironically break his body.

  58. The problem is all these teams that draft quarterbacks early listen to the media and their fan bases to much. No matter what draft him and let him sit unless you are SURE he deserves to start right away. Who cares what the fans think (yes I’m talking about me). Do what is best for the team and the player long term. If Rodgers had been mad sitting behind Favre so what, he doesn’t own the team.

  59. He’s right, and at least Teddy B. can sit and watch Cassel for a year… however, can’t wait to see Manziel knocked on his a$$ by the steelers or ravens.

There’s a lot of todays nfl that is emmbarassing/annoying compared to the glory years of the 70’s and 90′ and early 2000’s, mark cuban has a point that this league is ruining itself.

And has anyone ever asked Rodgers why his fanbase is so obsessed with the Vikings? it’s kinda creepy.

  60. only stat that matters- all-time head to head matchups GB-Min.

    GB leads 56-49-2

thats it, its done. vikings fans can finally stop. No excuses.

  61. It’s funny to hear from Vikings fans about how Green Bay is aging and declining, yet they’ve consistently had the youngest team in the NFL for like the past 7 years with the exception being last year where they were the 6th youngest.

That’s what happens when you show players on the decline like Jennings the door while replacing him with a younger/better WR in Randall Cobb.

There is a reason why TT always keeps a young roster and turns over the team with young guys in the draft to replace the old ones that go to die in Minnesota and spend their declining years.

  62. Viking fan sure talks big for a team that hasn’t won a thing in its NFL history. Pretty funny. At least Bear fan can boast about one Super Bowl victory, albeit, 29 years ago.

  63. I love the comments. I think the perspective that people are missing in the NFL now is you either preform or you’re out.

Problem is offensive coordinators and QB’s are not given time to develop together. Rodgers got 3 years to learn the offense and how to function in it. Does that make a difference? I would bet. If he came out his first year trying to get adjust and threw more int’s than TD’s would they stand behind him (In Minnesota we see the answer is clear: No). Does that mess with your head, I am sure it does.

I am a MN Vikings fan, I have a lot of respect for Rodgers. He speaks from the QB Position, not from the owners. His perspective is a good one, if the O-Coordinator doesn’t tailor the offense around the QB, or the talent on the team doesn’t match the QB; sit your top draft pick for a year to learn the offense and give the coordinator a chance to utilize his weapon.

It is really no different than any job in the real world. You would never put a new hire out in front of a customer for your business on the first day. Instead you ease them into the transition, learning how the company prefers to handle situations.

  64. Last time I checked…

Aaron Rodgers – 6 years as a starter – One Ring

Minnesota – 54 years as a franchise – Zero Rings

  65. He’s a Superbowl Champion, calling out a perennial doormat. Nobody respects the Vikings, and I mean nobody.

    Made my day.

  66. tell that to andrew luck oh i forgot he’s old rag doll rogers just says that because he had to shine favres shoes for so long he is a good quarterback though even if he’s a cry baby

  67. Hmm, talk about being on a bad team, the Packers looked down right craptastic while Rodgers was out nursing his boo boo last year..
in fact, over the past two years the Packers are only 1-2-1 against CHRISTIAN PONDER. Let that sink in a little

  68. Rodgers could have been Alex Smith. Starting for BAD 9er teams. Alex got destroyed!! Broken collar bone, sacked a ton of times. Confidence issues. New OC EVERY YEAR.

Alex finally grew, very Team first player. Cut his contract in half to stay with the 49ers those final years.

He did have some playoff success and doing pretty good in KC.

So the flip side is if Rodgers was drafted by the Niners. He might have been Crushed out there and not had the time to Sit and learn the game.

Look at Brady Quinn and JaMarkBUST Russell Ryan Leaf…. lots of big potential stars that burned out.

Johnny Should SIT and simmer down the partying…

  69. All’s I know is that I live around Packer media everyday. Rodgers handled that whole Brett Favre situation with dignity and class. He kept his comments to himself and when it was time to play he thrived. I gotta hand it to the guy he handled his business and the Packers came out shining because of it, when it could have split a locker room. I’m not a Packers fan either.

  70. You know what’s funny? The fact that MN will finish ahead of the packers this year while they let bridgewater sit and learn behind cassel. Stupid Shaaron

  71. …..look at the photo of Rodgers. Are you seeing this? His hands are massive compared to the ball….at least size 10-1/8″. You can’t teach that, and waiting won’t help.

  72. At this point in time, today, the Packers have two back-up quarterbacks that could start for the Vikings.

Start with that then tell me how the Vikings are going to dominate the division. Uh huh.

  73. In truth, Bridgewater doesn’t need to start this year. Cassel will be just fine — Vikings are at best a .500 team this regardless of who starts. If Bridgewater is ready, then play him towards the end of the year. If not, let him have the whole year.

You do want to play Bridgewater as soon as is ready to get him some game action, and help him understand the speed and complexity of NFL games.

  74. He’s obviously right. Teams that push guys to play early do so for their benefit in the short term, not the long term.

  75. Bridgewater vs Manziel = Apples vs Oranges

I believe the new coaching staff in Minnesota will be the big difference. They will do the right thing for Bridgewater and the Vikings. I don’t know what to think of my Browns though.

While I have total faith in Ray Farmer acquiring the talent, I’m concerned about Pettine and the coaching staff. First, this is NOT Farmer’s people. Second, Pettine has very limited experience and it’s all been on Defense.

I question if the Browns owner, management and the fans give him the time to develop into a Head Coach, ala the Steelers and Chuck Noll? I doubt it, and it will be unfair to Pettine & Co.

  76. The Packers have 3 DIFFERENT QB’s who all have more Super Bowl rings than the Vikings. How said is that?

  77. Rodgers is a great player but his word is toilet paper. Braun is innocent and welching on 2 separate bets for example.

  78. And btw his winning percentage in the playoffs is .600. I assume you took math in those mudduck schools too.

Here’s a little math. MN all time playoff winning percentage .410. But hey, MN can fall back on all of the great memories of their best playoff QB of all time……………..Wade Wilson, he of the best winning percentage of MN QBs in the playoffs.

    Good times!

  79. And last I check Rodgers doesn’t play defense so… Adrian Peterson certainly isn’t the reason the Vikings can’t make the playoffs. Calvin Johnson ain’t the reason the Lions tanked. Ya’ll try your best to talk crap about Rodgers but would break your QBs neck for a chance to have Rodgers on your team.

  80. I love how no one talks about all the other players injured around the time Rodgers was injured, like the entire team was healthy outside of him. Randall Cobb, Bryan Bulaga, JerMichael Finley, Casey Hayward and Sam Shields… that’s all the starters missing from that game that are NOT Aaron Rodgers. And that’s without talking about players like Clay Matthews playing with a club on his arm…

AND YOU STILL COULD BEAT US! We started Marshall Newhouse at RT and had that many starters gone and no Aaron Rodgers and the best you could do was TIE. Let that sink in.

  81. Not that I am a fan of Cleveland, because I am not (If its brown flush it down) but they were not that bad of a team this past season. They certainly had QB issues, but their defense was nasty and they have a decent receiving core.

    The Vikings…that’s another story ha

  82. see: Tim Couch

A paper thin O line, no 1000 yard rusher, and 1 legit WR. He never stood a chance. Somehow got the Browns to the playoffs one year.

I wonder how he would have fared if he went to MIN and played with Moss and Carter, and that O line with 3 former #1 draft picks on it. Oh and Robert Smith in the backfield.

  83. well, usually a young QB will start on a bad team because people will blame that team being bad on the old QB. That’s why they brought the young guy in in the first place.

  84. You Vikings fans think way to highly of a team that’s still rebuilding. You guys are still 2 years away from contending. Whoever said in comments that you’ll be 11-5 and packers 5-11 this year…ha! Dream on. Start thinking realistically. Packers and bears will fight for division as usual. You Vikings will still place last. Lions will give everyone hope through week 4 then fade away.

  85. Yesterdays hits do NOT win todays games. Too many talk about what happened in the past when A fraud was screaming to anyone who would listen wanting to start. Now that he does, for him to lecture about who should start or sit comes off a lil hypocritical. Sorry if the raw truth hurts (without the kidie trash talking)…….

  86. Interesting how people try to re-write history. Rodgers NEVER once screamed to anyone or publicly stated that he should start when he was the backup. This is just a case of more make believe on behalf of casual football fans.

  87. themeccalambeaufield

Check YOUR language skills AND history dude.

GB was so god-awful for so long and so many decades. Apparently you are about 16 and have forgotten how lousy they were in the 70, 80, and even early 90s. Now THAT was the definition of a “perennial” loser. As in Year, after year, after year, after year after year. 3rd, 4th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 4th, 5th place finish. Again, and again, and again.

Sorry, but a team that has had losing seasons in 3 of 4 years is NOT any kind of definition of “perennial” other than in the minds of loser fans of a rival team.

Get off it, and stop fixating on the Vikings and try instead to ROOT for your own team.

  88. Take it easy Viking fans. He may have called MN a bad team, but at least he didn’t call them hapless and tasteless.

  89. In addition to never winning a Superbowl in over a half century of semi-existence, the incredibly unsuccessful Vikings also have a losing record dating all the way back to the beginning of this century/millennium.

  90. Rodgers also thinks that doing yoga helps you play football and that the Packers are now, all of a sudden, intimidating. So what does that tell you about what else he might think?

  91. Here’s what Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press thinks:

    10/23/13

“No quarterback since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger has mastered an opponent better than Rodgers has Minnesota. His 116.4 rating in 11 regular-season games against the Vikings ranks No. 1 in NFL history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. That is only slightly higher than Rodgers’ 111 rating against the Detroit Lions, another NFC North foe.

Rodgers has completed 70.7 percent of his passes for 2,840 yards and 24 touchdowns with just four interceptions against the Vikings. His 8-4 record includes last season’s wild-card playoff victory at Lambeau Field.”

    —————

As I type this, there are 131 comments on this story. I went through and counted, and at least 40 of them are from Vikings fans.

But its the Packers fans who are fixated on the Vikings?….. Mhmm.

  93. ariani1985 says: Jun 24, 2014 7:24 PM

Ponder suxs and Rodgers is a playoff choke, end of story.
    ———–

A “playoff choke” who has as many playoff wins in his six seasons as the Minnesota Vikings have had in the last SIXTEEN seasons.

    Man, the Vikings are terrible.

  94. OMG Look at all of the Viking trolls on here. And they complain about the Packer fans on their threads.

Ha ha ha ha The Vikes are one of thr Worse franchises in all of sports case closed

The vikings Offense is better than Greenbay in every aspect except the QB so if Teddy is any good then they could be very dominant.

Better O-Line, better running back, better tight end, similar WR talent.
    ————————————-
Your Guards are garbage, your 1st round left tackle was exposed last year – your center and right tackle only look good because of AP.

Your oline gave up more pressures and sacks than our Oline (which was without our starting offensive tackles last year).

    You’ve got AP…. and?
We’ve got Eddie, Starks, and Harris – way better crop of HBs.

WRs… so having a washed up greg, a bunch of nobodies, and a kick returner makes your group better than Boykin, Nelson, Cobb, and the three rookies we’ve just added?

  96. Ted Thompson—-“Erin, you are aware there is a second round to the playoffs? ”

    Erin Rodgers—- “blank stare”

    Cardinals, giants, 49ers oh my!
    #choke

  97. #choke is exclusively for the Vikings,

Consider superbowls, 0-4 despite being the prohibitive favorite in 3 out the 4 and being a slight favorite in the 4th game.

Consider the last 5 NFL Championship games the Vikings appeared in, 0-5 but that 41-0 loss to the Giants was especially close but not as close as their home loss to Falcons when their FG kicker missed for the first time all season when he could have iced the game.

Kinda brings a tear to my eye just thinking of it.

  98. Eagles, Falcons, Bears, Steelers! Oh Yes!!!

Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, Championship Belt, Lombardi Trophy!

Sheer Joy, 13th NFL Championship for our beloved Green Bay Packers!

    Thanks for the wonderful memories.

  99. Rodgers- Yes, of course I’m aware there is a 2nd round. How do you think I beat the Vikings so easily to advance to the 2nd round? How do you think I won the Super Bowl- something the Vikings haven’t been able to do in over 50+ years of trying!?!?

  100. As a Vikings fan, I understand where he’s coming from. However, if I am a player reading this – especially Bridgewater – I do whatever I can to show Rodgers and the entitled Packers fans that they’re easily beatable without assistance from the NFL/refs.

  101. “Check your history! Its 3 out of the last 4 years dude. So most would call that perennial.”

No, perennial is 1968 to 1991. The nearly quarter century cellar dwelling that Packer fans pretend didn’t exist.

  102. “Ha ha ha ha The Vikes are one of thr Worse franchises in all of sports case closed”

I think this speaks for itself.

  103. I’m not a Packer fan, but I do respect an organization that does it right. Viking fans are just plain delusional.

  104. All of you trolls, especially you delusional viking trolls that are mad because your team sucks and has no World Championsips, are ridiculous. Keep bashing the Packers if it helps you sleep at night. Just remember that whichever of the other 31 teams is your favorite, they don’t have 13 World Championships and they dont have the best quarterback in the planet.

  105. Bridgewater is the missing piece the Vikings need to complete their offense. If I was Rodgers I would be hoping he doesn’t start too.

  106. Zimmer and the Vikings won’t take your slanderous talk Erin……….You’ll be wishing that you kept your mouth shut!

  107. Do you know what makes up for that quarter century of cellar dwelling you’re talking about? 13 World Championships. 13 World Championships that haters like you can never take away. Your team, whichever it is, can’t touch that. Keep hating. You’re awesome at it. Go Pack!

  108. I don’t remember a time were Aaron Rodgers has ever lost a game in the 4th quarter. The reason the Packers record hasn’t been as good is because of the defense losing the game, not Aaron Rodgers. Of course, everything may fall on his shoulders because he is a Quarterback, but football is a TEAM game, perhaps one of the most important team games in all of sports. All 11 guys need to be on the same page on all aspects of the game at all times. No one person has ever won a football game, ever. Rodgers is the one of best QB’s in the NFL right now, and probably will be for the next 7-10 years. Vikings fans are just jealous of all of the Packers success. They want so badly for Rodgers to suck, they will say the most outlandish things about the Packers becasue of their great hatred for them. Vikings will be better this year and I think they made the right choice by going after Teddy as opposed to taking Manziel early. They will be an improved team but don’t kid yourself by saying a rookie QB will come in and have a better career than a guy that has already won an NFL MVP award as well as a Superbowl MVP award, oh and also has the best QB rating out of any Quarterback in the history of the NFL. How bout you guys pump the breaks before you make yourselves look stupid in predicting a superbowl run and an MVP caliber QB in Teddy. Let’s see him play a game at least before we crown the guy.

  109. Lets see… an over the hill QB is saying a division rival (whom his team just so happens to face 2x a year) shouldn’t play their rookie QB… a QB who’s college QB ratings were MUCH better than his own. Yeah… it sounds like #12 needs to wash his pants… the back is looking kinda brown.

Lets look at Adrian Peterson’s record in the NFL.

    NFL awards and honors
2007 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
    2012 AP NFL MVP
2012 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award

    NFL records
Most yards rushing in a single game (296)
    2nd all-time rushing yards in a single season (2,097)
Most rushing yards in any eight-game period (1,322)
Most 60+ yard TD runs in a career (12)
Most 200-yard rushing games for a rookie (2)
Most yards rushing in the first eight games (1,036)
Most 50+ yard runs in a single season (7)
Most games, 150 or more yards rushing, season (7) (tied with Earl Campbell, 1980)
Most rushing yards in a calendar month (861) in December 2012

Ok… now lets look at Eddy Lacy’s record in the NFL.

    NFL awards and honors
2013 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

    NFL records
Oh my… there doesn’t seem to be any NFL records with the name Eddy Lacy attached to them.

Yeah whatthehell… Lacy is the real deal alright! Bwahahahaha!

I have one sobering thought for you fudgepackers… what if Norv Turner (arguably the best OC in the NFL) does such a good job with Cassel that the Vikings don’t NEED to start TB this year?

  110. Eddy Lacy has played 1 season. How can you be comparing him to Adrian? Of course he isn’t as good as Adrian yet. Maybe he never will be, but Eddy is a great running back on a great football team, and is a part of the best organization in all profesional sports. (Cue Vikings fans rolling their eyes) but what other organization is owned by the fans? The atmosphere in Green Bay on game day is like no other in sports. Tight nit community with a proffesional football team, can’t beat it. Lacy is the real deal and it’s stupid that your laughing at that. Peterson is a freak of nature trapped in a terrible organization. Norv Turner is a great Offensive Coordinator I’ll give you that, but are you really comparing college stats? Do college stats transfer to the NFL? No, don’t think so. Viking fans are so bitter with their arguments, I guess I would be a little salty if my team always lost when it mattered the most. Vikings have had sooo many good teams, they have been sooo close but for some reason, they always blow it. I understand why you guys are bitter, but use some common sense please. Oh and Aaron Rodgers will shread you this year, can’t wait to watch it. I went to the Packers Vikings game this year in the Dome. Packers fans had the “Go Pack Go” chant going in the first quarter, Vikings fans are pathetic, how can you guys let that happen in your own stadium? Anyways, go Pack, Vikings blow, that is all.

  111. Rodgers is right for the most part. Sitting for at least 1 year is going to do wonders for most rookie QBs; especially when they’re on terrible teams.

Most rookie QBs come to the NFL and find out it’s not nearly as easy to step into an NFL game as it is a college game.

This is bound to have a negative impact on many QBs psychologically; possibly to the point of making them believe they’ll never be able to compete at this level.

There are almost no college QBs that can come in on day 1 after the draft and perform at a Hall of Fame level that season. Rodgers came in after 3 years of sitting and matched Favre’s performances right off the bat.

  112. like Rodgers as QB but he has little personal integrity and should shut up

remember this tool telling people he would give up a year’s salary if his buddy Ryan Braun was a liar and a cheat… dude reneged… lost a lot of respect for the guy

and he sat because he was a low draft pick playing behind a great QB… it was not necessarily the plan

  113. LOL. someone said” Aarron is scared of the Vikings.” now that’s funny.

  114. viking fans hated favre , longwell , jennings, and bishop until the had them now norv turner is the best O.C.? ? hahhahah…

  115. Hey Aaron, maybe you should go sit back on the bench then. Considering if you were the QB of the Vikings, we’d have a lot better record than the Packers and the rest of that sorry team.

  116. I love the delusional vikings fans.

As if Rodgers wouldn’t instantly become the greatest QB in vikings history if he were to somehow land there.

    More division titles…. hahahahahahaahahahahahahaha

If I need more comic relief I’ll continue reading vikings fans post about the packers.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

best comment I’ve ever seen on PFT

  118. I think Rodgers should show some integrity and keep his word… remember the tool saying he would give up his salary for a year if his “buddy” Ryan Braun was a liar…

so just shut up Aaron…. your opinion is worthless

and you did get benefit of sitting because you were not a high pick and went to a team with a stud QB
