Brandon Flowers: “I am the best corner in football”

AP

Good news, Chargers fans: Your team just acquired the best cornerback in the NFL. At least in his own mind.

Brandon Flowers, the veteran who was cut by the Chiefs and signed by the Chargers this month, has declared himself the single best player in football at his position.

“First off, let me must say, I am the best corner in football,” Flowers said on NFL Network, via the Kansas City Star.

The Chiefs obviously don’t think Flowers is even close to the best cornerback in football, or else they wouldn’t have cut him. But Flowers said that playing through injuries caused him to struggle last season, and he believes the Chiefs are going to regret their decision.

“I was very surprised when it happened,” Flowers said. “I knew I hit the cap pretty hard, but I thought if I was going to get traded or released it was going to be in February or March sometime. The timing that they did it, it kind of hit me. That’s why I stayed in the division. I wanted to let the Chiefs know that’s why they hit me. I want to let them know how I felt about it.”

Now the Chiefs will have to face the best corner in football twice a year.

  1. Aw, man… not you too! Geez, if I had a nickel for every time I heard that from a cornerback…

  2. man you just got there, and the bolts already have you drinking that kool aid……next thing you are going to say you will be adding to all those superbowl trophies they have there in San Diego….

cheers and keep drinking that stuff…choo choo!

  3. And your the best corner in football!! And your the best corner in football!! And your the best corner in football!!

  4. This dude is a joke if he thinks he is the best CB in the game. I am a Hawks fan and while I do believe that Sherman is the best I do believe it is up for debate but this dude isn’t even in the top 5 at his position, he was cut from a squad that needs defense. If the Chiefs thought for a minute this guy was the best CB in the game (as stated in the article) they would have found a way to keep him around. The entire secondary is the reason they lost in the playoffs to the Colts, so I wouldn’t be walking around touting how good I am if I were Flowers…however maybe he wants a new contract. This is how it is done in this day age I suppose…SMH.

  5. Teams pass for a billion yards in the NFL now.

Ergo, there is no best corner in the NFL.

  6. The Chiefs didn’t cut you early because they needed to spread your ridiculous cap hit over two years. And the Chargers only signed you because they are desperate.

  7. I’m the best cornerback in football. Now I just need a team to sign me to a 6 year $65 million contract.

  8. I think cornerbacks need that hubris to survive. After all, when a wide receiver makes a mistake, it is 2nd and 10. But when a cornerback makes a mistake, it is 6 points.

  9. we have seen a shift from the loud mouth WRs to the loud mouth CBs.

please stop putting mics infront of these guys, they are hurting my head.

  10. LOL

Flowers isn’t the best CB on the Chargers, let alone his division or the NFL. He signed with the Chargers because they were the highest bidder for his service, not as “revenge” against the Chiefs for slashing a combined $14.5 million from their salary cap in 2014 & 2015.

He should feel lucky he received more than the vet minimum because that’s what he’ll get next year.

  11. Every day someone claims their the best at something in this league. Just shut up and play.

  12. You’re the best! Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down

    You’re the Best! Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down

    You’re the Best! Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

  13. Like I said before these players are nothing but a bunch of babies today. Guys from the oats have to hate them. Sickening

  14. As a Chiefs fan I really liked him. And he is a great player when healthy(probably top 3 tackling and run support cb in the league). The problem is he’s never healthy. He’s never really injured enough to stop him from playing but he seemed to always be playing hurt. Not sure why he turned into a thirteen year old girl out to get revenge either.

  15. If he truly believes he is the best corner in the nfl, then the Next b flowers article will say “brandon flowers suspended for substance abuse”

  16. In truth, there has been more than one season where I thought, “Man, Flowers might be amongst the best.”

But I was referring to best dressed.

  17. he is the best corner back and none of you who talk crap can put him down oh he takes a pay cut probley still makes more money then you ever will so dont talk unless u can back it up

  18. You are the best corner in football. In the corner of the room, back to the class, Dunce cap on your head. Professor Sherman will see you after class, with a yardstick to check that ego.

  19. Wow. There seem to be a lot of these “best CB in the league” these days.

I bet Rod Woodson and/or Dion Sanders would cover their assignments plus these chumps at the same time.

  20. I do have a Brandon Flowers authentic jersey that I will sell for $20 + shipping and according to flowers it will be worth a mint when he retires

  21. Of course these dolts wouldn’t tell you if this was merely said in jest, as that just wouldn’t rack up more advertising hits.

  22. The Chargers drafted 5′ 9″ CB Jason Verrett, at#1. Now they buy Flowers, another 5′ 9″ CB. Passing against the Chargers is going to be like playing Keep-Away by the taller WR’s.

Maybe they got Flowers for the 1-yr. to show Verrett the ropes, and then plan to let him enter FA in 2015.
On the other hand, arent the coaches supposed to show players the ropes?

  23. Bolt up fellas.

That’s the only attitude you can have playing professional athletics. I don’t see how anyone could get all worked about an athlete saying that. Not a big deal. I have a sense that saying that you’re the 7th best corner in the afc could hurt their financial leverage during negotiations. Weird.

  24. Patrick Peterson is the best. He covers the other teams best receiver on every play no-matter where they line up, unlike some other corners who only stay on one side of the field. He also doesn’t need to hold on every play like some other corners. That and he also plays special teams and offense, unlike all the other so-called best corners.

  25. We used to talk about diva WRs like Chad Johnson, Terrell Owen, Randy Moss, and countless others. Seems to me that WRs are getting quieter, and it’s the CBs that are the divas now.

  26. Little bit tired of these statements. Top CB is one of four: Revis, Peterson, Sherman, or Haden. I’m a Hawks fan, but its not difficult to see that basically any CB brought in by Shneider and Carroll has a chance to be successful, that being said Sherman has the numbers, period.

  27. Lets remember this is a quote from NFL network where he was asked to chose from a few of the best corners in football. He smiled and said himself. I’m sure he knows better. Its June… there aint much to talk about in the NFL universe.

  28. “he is the best corner back and none of you who talk crap can put him down oh he takes a pay cut probley still makes more money then you ever will so dont talk unless u can back it up”

    Take a nap.

  29. What else was he to say?

I have no dog in this fight, but if you want to prove him wrong then get in shape, have a team sign you, and go prove him wrong….or continue to bash the guy behind an anonymous username knowing you don’t have the ballz to say it in front of Flowers or any players face for that matter.

  30. He was joking and the media fell for it and then so did most of you readers. Brilliant.

  31. Man, NFL players are very comical albeit confidence in their own right this year.

At least when Richard Sherman says it, its not just running his mouth, he has advanced statistics backing him up since 6 games into 2011.

  32. Do we seriously need to do it little league style and just give every CB a “Best cornerback In Football” trophy, along with a snow cone and change for the vending machine?

  33. His comments are totally being taken out of context. He made that statement very “tongue-and-cheek” and in a very joking manner. He even laughed about it with the commentators. He went on to praise Sherman and Revis… Especially, Revis.

Scary how a statement made in jest can be manipulated and made to sound bad…

  34. No guys, Revis got cut because he isn’t even close to the best CB in football. Richard Sherman is and it’s not even close.

  35. The Chiefs cut him to save money, not because of his ability. #45yearsoffailandcounting

  36. If everyone doesn’t think they’re the best in their own mind, they shouldn’t be playing. No one wants to say it though, can’t knock the guy for having no confidence good for him.

  37. LOL, “Revis is the best corner in football & he got cut.” LOL. Dream on Pats fans. The Seahawks have guys on the practice squad that are better than Revis and Flowers.

    Put together.

  38. ANOTHER best corner?
What are we gonna do with all of them?

Flowers, teams don’t release the best corner in the NFL.
    Period. OK?

  39. I don’t think teams are saying:
“Look at the schedule… We’ve got to go play against Flowers! Oh No! What are we going to do?”

  40. If your a breathing human you have potential to be the best corner in the NFL. This is getting annoying.

Sherman vs Revis is the ONLY valid conversation. Get that Patrick Peterson, Cromartie nonsense outta here

  41. I cant knock another man’s confidence in himself but i can laugh at it!! But i also say thanks i needed the laugh after a long day Brandon..

  42. Give this man a drug test. He is on some serious hardcore drugs to say something like that. He must have been hanging around the president, sounds like something he would say about his presidency.

  43. So we can add Brandon to the ever growing list of players that are the best at their positions…

    Brandon flowers
    Richard Sherman
    Patrick Peterson
    A. Jeffery and B. Marshall
    R. White and J. Jones
    Titus Young
    LeSean McCoy

    And I’m sure I’m missing a few…

  44. That interview was done on NFL Network. He was asked who he thought was the best corner in the NFL. He said “I’m the best corner”. He should have. He’s a competitor. He should believe he’s the best. That’s why he’s going to keep getting better. He struggled in a scheme that didn’t fit him. Now he’s in one that does. Considering that the Chargers defense has so much young talent. First year under Pagano made turned this defense around. In his second they started off real slow. Due to not pass rush. A free agent bust Derek Cox. Can’t forget those missed tackles most where by the linebackers To being the biggest offender.
So I say welcome to San Diego Brandon Flowers

  47. nooo..im the best corner in the game fellaaaassss..

    – Darius Butler

  48. As a Charger fan I’ll say that Flowers may not be the best corner in the NFL but he will probably have the greatest impact for any team. The Chargers were dead last against the pass last year, and if Flowers helps to get that team to even average, then it was a GREAT deal.

  49. When was the last Charger to say he was the best at his position? Uh, Never!!! Maybe the Chargers need to all catch that cold & take that next step & catch the fever!!! He’s a Bolt now!! I really like his enthusiasm!!! Bolt up San Diego!! The whole team should be better…

  50. I remember when shut down corners were actually shut down corners … Like deion sanders… Charles Woodson.. Rod Woodson ….. Cover 1 reciever usually the best for the entire game an not get burned… Nowadays they play cover 2 an say they are shut down… Smh oh yeah revis did it before he got hurt as well

  51. “I am the best corner in football and the Chiefs didn’t collapse like a house of cards.”

  52. Flowers, “Since no one else will say I’m the best, I guess I have to. Still, my arm hurts from reaching around to pat myself on my back.”

  53. You would think he would be humble, Bro you just got cut for no other reason then the Chiefs didnt think you were worth the money, which wasnt that much anyway. Good idea, stay in the division with the 3 best QBs in football. Manning, Schaub and Smith. Yes I left off Rivers I didnt say the best cry babys in football.

  54. I really think ariani stays up at night jer king off to the packers. That guy is obsessed with mentioning them in every story.

  55. Wonder if he will feel the same way after getting torched by the likes of Donnie Avery & Junior Hemingway. SMDH.
Well, at least he is now the best corner on his team.

  56. Clearly he’s right, he had multiple 80 million dollar contracts thrown at him from 31 teams clamoring to sign the best corner in he league but nope, he decided to take a 1 year deal from the Chargers to “stick it” to the Chiefs.

He is right about the injures but that’s exactly the problem.

  57. Flowers was a very good corner. His play last year called that into question however. He was playing so bad at some points that they moved him to the slot so that he didn’t have to cover a great distance. Still an above average corner but he was going to get paid big money.

  58. Meanwhile, there’s a guy in Miami named Brent Grimes that didn’t even give up a TD last year despite routinely facing off against the opponent’s #1. *drop mic*

  59. anyone that actually watched flowers on NFL Network knows he said it jokingly.. ppl take things literally way too fast. His real answer to best CB was Revis

  60. Aloud corner is a proud owner saying now he has to show it 1 year with us and he may be gone don’t bet on him having a bad year I f anything he just lit a fire under himself so time will tell how good he will be in our system with freeney and Ingram coming off the corners to rush the passer forcing the qb to get rid of it sooner I think that is going to put up more opportunities for ints and huge turnovers so yeah this com i ng year he may end up being the best Damn corner in football and forget all you haters #boltpride #chargercountry #ibelievethatwewillwin

  61. What would you say if you were Flowers? I’m not the best? I certainly do not share his opinion but do appreciate the self confidence and attitude showed by a man who works as a modern day warrior in the arena of sport. If I owned a team I would want an entire roster of men who felt and said exactly the same thing as this gentleman did.

  62. Sorry Brandon Flowers, Clowney is the best corner in the NFL. He was the first pick in the whole draft, and I have him as the best corner in 5 years. Great closing speed, delicious hip rotation, special later quickness, superb ball hawker, exquisite instincts and great fb I.Q. Maybe you ARE number 2, but Clowney is better I’m afraid.

  63. What is with all the weed hate?its a great plant made from the earth with all sorts of medicinal qualities and yet you would rather take a pain killer? Hypocrites!!!these players need this stuff it’s Mother Earth cure for a sore body without addiction and you talk trash on those who use and benefit from its uses?god people are so narrow minded!

  64. Yes And I am guessing when Seattle plays them this year and we tag flowers for 2~3 touchdowns he will call it a “fluke game” and Shermans strong performance against his team will never happen again…blah blah blah. As many posters have alluded to with the Flowers comments?Talk is cheap. He is truly a legend in his own mind.

  65. Darrelle Revis: “I feel like I’m the best cornerback…”

Joe Jaden: “I am the No. 1 corner in the NFL”

Richard Sherman: “I’m the best corner in the game”

Patrick Peterson: “I think I am the best cornerback in the league right now”

Brandon Flowers: “I am the best corner in football”

LeSean McCoy: “I’m the best running back in the”

Adrian PetersonL “I feel I’m the best”

  66. Let me know when you make a killer play in a championship game in January that sends your team straight to the Super Bowl, then maybe I’ll listen.

  67. The divas of the NFL are CBs now instead of WRs.

It amazes me how much I continue to appreciate having Joe Haden after hearing the loud mouth cornerback divas in the league chanting “I’M THE BEST!”

Joe Haden shuts his mouth, stays out of trouble, lets his play speak for itself, and is an outstanding community person. What happens? He becomes the highest paid cornerback and I could not be happier for him.

If only Gordon could take notes.

  68. Not even the best corner on Team. Team Shareece Wright!!
Although glad to have the attitude. We need some swag this year!!
