Donte Whitner questions if players really vote for NFLN Top 100

AP

NFL Network is in the process of unveiling its annual Top 100, as voted on by other players. Donte Whitner did not make the cut, and as a result, he thinks there’s something fishy about the voting process.

Whitner, the safety who moved from the 49ers to the Browns in free agency this year, took to Twitter on Thursday night and accused NFL Network of “lies” for saying that players vote on the Top 100. When a fan expressed surprise that Whitner didn’t make the Top 100 cut, Whitner answered, “it’s ok. . . . players don’t vote on that. Nor does coaches.”

“No one in the 49ers locker room voted! None of my friends around the league voted!” Whitner wrote.

Whoever runs the NFL Network Twitter account decided to engage with Whitner and insist that NFL Network itself doesn’t vote, but Whitner wasn’t having it. Whitner asked, “who voted? I didn’t get an answer.” Whitner also said of NFL Network, “they want fans to believe players vote.”

Whitner isn’t the first player to question the validity of the Top 100 ranking, and he won’t be the last. The “Top 100” list serves as a conversation stimulator during the dullest times of the offseason, but it shouldn’t be taken more seriously than that.

  1. Donte should concentrate on more important things. Like the “look at me” stunt he pulled last year saying he wanted to be called Hitner.

  2. Whitener, you aren’t a top 100. Keep crying. The only way this guy makes the spot light is when you see him get burned for a td, whiff on a tackle, or when he massages his ego.

Even my spell check doesn’t like you, Whitener.

  3. Just Proof!! NFL is rigged. I have been saying it for years.

New Orleans wins Super Bowl after Hurricane came through.

Steelers win year Bettis retired and went back to play in home town of Detriot.

Ravens win when Lewis said he is retiring.

Meanwhile, my Brownies suck every year, but why make them win by the NFL standards? We still support the crap they have put on the field since they returned in ’99.

    Just Sayin’…Go Brownies!!

  4. Take a look at your tape matched up against any half decent tight end in the league and that’s probably why you’re not on this list.

  5. Its a fair and honest question that should be answered by NFLN.

If players and coaches didn’t vote and NFLN says they didn’t vote-so who voted?

  6. This guy is a clown…….if there is one person that shouldn’t make the list it’s definitely this guy…..all he does is get burned in big games…..

  7. Well duh. This is the list that had Russell Wilson above Andrew luck. Wilson is a great guy, but if the casual fan usuall acknowledges that luck is better than wilson, odds are most players would too.

  8. Just do what Eli Manning did. Go out and win the SuperBowl the year after not even making it in the Top 100.

Then again, he just got “lucky”, right everyone?

  9. I lean towards believing Whitner, I mean Hitner. A bunch of players have said the same thing in recent years. Everybody can’t all be lying at the same time

  10. What this proves is that NFL fans are smarter than I thought. Whitner is horrible at best.

  11. Haha who is the idiot who is claiming the NFL is rigged by saying the Saints won after Hurricane Katrina?

The season following Katrina, the Saints lost to the Bears in the NFC championship game, who then lost to the Colts in the Super Bowl. Saints won it all 2 years later.

Hate to be the one that breaks this to you, but the reason the Browns suck has nothing to do with the NFL being rigged.

  13. hey whiffner, worry about things that matter….

funny how he changed his name, he was called whiffner in Buffalo for years for watching gronk run circles around him…..

  14. Aaron Rodgers isn’t in the top 10, but throughout the year most players claim he’s the best QB. My guess it’s a few hacks that vote or a guy who wrote down a 100 names of players he likes.

  15. No lie. First of all I never thought any media outlet could be as bad as ESPN. Well nfl network is just as bad. Really how could nick Foles be at the bottom of the list? The guy should have been in the too 5 period. It is top 100 of 2013 right??? Besides Manning I don’t know who had a better year.

And the PATS won the superbowl right after 9/11 when everything at the time was about being patriotic. I don’t actually feel it’s rigged but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is.

  17. He definitely doesn’t belong on the list but I think he’s right about players not voting. Why be so secretive about who votes? I want to know which players are voting.

  18. This is a network that hires clowns like Sapp and Irvin. They haven’t had any credibility since it launched…

  19. I agree with the player. I know 4 NFL players personally and none have ever voted. The purpose of this list is to create controversy and turmoil which it does. Honestly with the different skill sets needed to play any of the 22 positions it would be impossible to get anywhere near an accurate list.

  20. Your eyes will tell you who’s good or not. It’s really a fluff piece for the eyes and a way to keep die-hard fans watching when there’s a lull in action or the draft or free agency. After a while how do you value one player over another anyhow? I mean all teams have different needs so it’s kinda moot.

  21. Sour Grapes….u mad bro?…. if you watch the show properly u actually see some scenes of players writing the list…the players that comment most likely vote….it also has been confirmed in the past that not every player votes….he is just bitter because he wasnt there this year….y didnt he say something last year when he was on the list?

  22. When you have 32 teams top 100 is pretty elite you have to be top 3

on your team might be on cleveland not San Francisco maybe makes top150

  23. Just do what Eli Manning did. Go out and win the SuperBowl the year after not even making it in the Top 100.

Then again, he just got “lucky”, right everyone?

Actually Eli made one of the best throws I’ve ever seen in that second Super Bowl win. I’m not a giants fan but that sideline throw to Nicks? Or was it Manningham? Either way…great clutch throw. With that said…Go Vikes!

  24. There is a simple answer to this. Those who can read the ballot, vote. Mostly that’s the QBs, so no wonder we see a lot of them in the top 100.

  25. I sure the order was randomized and that no intelligent human being voted for this year’s list given some of their bizarre rankings (Matt Forte four spots behind Demarco Murray being one).

  26. who cares, the whole thing is a joke but that’s what makes it funny. When a average at best player doesn’t make it and says system is rigged, how about you play like a top 100 player and shut up! there are 64 starting safeties in the NFL, I don’t think Whinter would rank in my top 30 safeties alone…

  27. the 49ers liked you so much they didn’t even offer you a contract. your name not on the list must be because they didn’t count the 49er votes. you’re going to hate this guy worse then lebron by the end of the year cleveland. i don’t know which is worse his play, or his personality.

  28. Make all the fun you want about Donte, but his point is very valid.

Who is actually doing the voting????

After many months of this voting being questioned (last year and this) why hasn’t some investigative reporter looked into it?

    What say you Florio?

  29. I also wonder who votes…

have not watched this year and think time for this to end…

they put a QB that is at best #16, more like #18-20 IMO, at #24 overall; they are going to put a CB that does not even play shutdown role in, and is not a top 5 CB, in as top CB; they put the SB winning QB, who I like, but is not a top 12 QB, at #20 overall….. we can all go on and on…

    enough of this charade….

  30. Watch the last Browns vs. Patriots game & try saying afterwards the NFL is not rigged with a straight face. Sad but true.

  31. I love NFLN, but the Top 100 is a joke. Just a way to try to get the league into the news during the slowest part of the off season.

  32. I can’t stand this guy but I believe him, it’s never made any sense.

  33. Insightful comments by Whitner. Good to see he leads with his head off the field too

  34. I can assure this process is not rigged. It is 100% transparent with no undue influence.

Hey, look at this…how did Roger Goodell make into the Top 10?

  35. Watch the 4th quarter of the last Browns/Patriots game, then come back on here with a straight face & say the league is not rigged.

  36. I think maybe he’s right.

Writers at NFL.com has been publishing pieces screaming about how Russell Wilson made it into the Top 20, and Aaron Rodgers didn’t make the Top 10.

If they hadn’t manipulated the list themselves, they would have had nothing to write about this week…

    ————–

You are kidding right? You are saying the onside kick to seal the game was rigged? Do you know how impossible that is. The Browns just blew it. Get over it.

  38. In the first Top 100 (2011 I think) the NFL polled only players who made the pro bowl that year and asked them to list not only their top overall 10 but their top 5 at each position and used those rankings to calculate the list (at least this is what NFLN said during the inaugural run). This is why the top 100 in 2011 wasn’t too bad, obviously it had it’s flaws but it’s the run away winner compared to the rest.

Since then they’ve simply asked any player who would talk to them their top 5 overall players, nothing else. So even if it was honest the sampling method they use is just stupid, and thus the lists have been terrible since.

  39. Whitner doesn’t belong in the top 100.

2 out of 22 players are starting safeties out of all starting players on the team. 9%

Assuming then there is room for 9 out of 1oo players for the safety position at most (given the extra spots reserved for QBs and some other positions), he isn’t one of the top 9 safteties in the league anymore. He’s probably top 20. He doesn’t belong.

  40. When they show who the fans voted for and where they rank them, it’s all QB’s, RB’s, WR’s, and TE’s in the top 10. The highest voted Offensive Lineman was in the 80’s. So while this NFL Network Top 100 list does seem a bit shady, at least it isn’t a bunch of 13 year olds and Fantasy Football geeks voting.

  41. Here is a question for everyone……If you were an NFL player, would you take the time to list what you thought was the top 100 players? I know I would have better things to do.

  42. Vote?….most can’t read on an adult level. Why else are most players broke soon after retiring?

Just Proof!! NFL is rigged. I have been saying it for years.

New Orleans wins Super Bowl after Hurricane came through

    ——————————————————————-

Umm….Hurricane Katrina happened in Sept. 2005. The Saints won a Superbowl in Feb. 2010. Either the 2 things have literally nothing to do with each other or that is one serious delayed response by the NFL.

  44. Many of the posts blasting Whitner are a classic case of reading comprehension fail. They are shooting the messenger instead of actually thinking about what is being said or the POINT OF THE STORY. Who does the voting if not the players? The Network “claims” the players did but that’s apparently not the case. They need to come clean on this.

As the saying gos… hindsight is 20/20. It’s easy to find correlation after the fact. There’s always a good story line regardless of who wins.

  46. With all of the money and individual careers involved in professional sports, did anyone think any of it is NOT staged? Each play may not be rigged but, I think it’s “understood” what teams will win on any given day.

I remember when the world was shocked to find out professional wrestling was staged.

There are a lot of private societies in this world (Masons, Luminati and Bilderburg?). The exclusive club of owners is akin to the “Skull & Bones” of our industrialists.

  47. I love how any post can be used as fuel for the already raging “let’s hate the Seahawks” fire. People love to hate greatness.

Comments like yours are why people hate the Seadderall Speedhawks FANBASE…

  49. There are 3 QB’s that are ranked higher than Aaron Rodgers. Right there that tells you this list is garbage.

Rodgers is the best QB in the league, no contest.

Just do a logic check – would the Pats, Donkies, or Saints be worse off with Rodgers? How would Brady or Peyton perform without a 100 yard rusher for a few years and with that porous O-line? How would Brees function when the weather got even little bit cold when he sucks in cold weather?

    The list is bogus….

  50. ‘Whoever runs the NFL Network Twitter account decided to engage with Whitner and insist that NFL Network itself doesn’t vote, but Whitner wasn’t having it. Whitner asked, “who voted? I didn’t get an answer.” Whitner also said of NFL Network, “they want fans to believe players vote.”’

Ha!!! I love that Whitner called them out. The NFL Network is garbage b/c their boss is Roger Goodell. Therefore they can never criticize the league or the owners. They probably have like 5-10 players vote & the rest their ‘crack staff’ makes up the rest.

BTW–The NFL Network has some horrible people that work there like Lindsey Rhodes & Amber Theoharris. Please tell me why they have jobs?

  51. ‘Whitner isn’t the first player to question the validity of the Top 100 ranking, and he won’t be the last. The “Top 100″ list serves as a conversation stimulator during the dullest times of the offseason, but it shouldn’t be taken more seriously than that.’

    Michael,

You’re missing the point here. The issue is whether the NFL Network is lying when they say it’s the ONLY list that’s voted on by the PLAYERS. This sounds like more manufactured Goodell garbage to keep the fans interested when that list is a joke. If the list is legit then why can’t the NFL Network say how many players voted?

  52. There’s no doubt they do….
Players hate perennial winners and don’t hate consistent losers…
Hence the reason Tom Brady never is above peyton in these farce rankings.

funny how he changed his name, he was called whiffner in Buffalo for years for watching gronk run circles around him…..
    ——————————————————–
I’m an SF fan who never liked Whitner’s big mouth but to be fair this is a pretty lame comment considering Whitner’s last year in Buffalo was Gronk’s rookie season with the Pats.

  54. Has NFLN said the votes were by “active players” or just “players”? There are plenty of (former) “players” working there that probably voted.

  55. It doesn’t matter because you’ll never make it as a member on the browns! In SF you were surrounded by great players. How’d Goldson do in his first year out of SF? He was better known for his fines & suspensions than play in TB.

  56. Donte, they voted the day of your birthday, remember the one no players went to.

The guy is a legend in his own mind!!

  57. If -hitner was on the list would he question it’s veracity? Why does this loser get so much play?

  58. I’m sure players vote. Just not many. It’s like the majority of polls that go around. “Blah blah blah has a 50% approval rating says new poll,” but what they don’t tell is that only a five hundred people or so were asked. I bet the top 100 asks like 100 – 200 players/coaches at max.

  59. I think by “nfl players” voted, they meant our handful of ground beef for brains network analysts, like shawn “was good when he was on roids” merriman and heath ” lucky to play on winning teams” evans.

  60. Sounds like sour grapes too me. there was 23 players who came out after this and said they voted and they all said they dident vote for him and the list included three of his ex teammates from San Francisco

  61. I believe him too. Many games this season were “fixed” or “steered”.
Also, what’s on that clipboard players have on the Top100 show? I think that’s just for show. They make players think they vote but in reality the votes aren’t used.
