Jim Irsay ordered to testify in child custody case

AP

A father who does not want his children exposed to Colts owner Jim Irsay has successfully requested that a judge order Irsay to testify in a custody hearing.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Irsay has been ordered to testify in a case involving the children of a woman who lives in a home owned by Irsay. The woman’s ex-husband believes Irsay is a substance abuser who should not be around his children.

“As a father, I do not want my children subjected to this type of behavior and lifestyle,” Greg Martin wrote in a letter to the court, adding that “money does not buy morals or self-respect.”

Irsay was arrested and is still facing charges of impaired driving in connection with an incident on March 16, and Martin says that his children were with his ex-wife at the time, in the home that Irsay owns, just blocks away from where Irsay was arrested.

Martin says Irsay’s testimony “will shed light on the atmosphere my children are living in.” Martin also wants Irsay’s medical records “to verify any addictions that the minor children would be subjected to while being around Mr. Irsay.”

No date has been set for Irsay’s testimony.

Riiiiiiiight! But Jimmy’s money can buy jetski’s for you and your kids, and that’ll make you all happy

Why sue your ex-wife’s boyfriend if its not about money?? Just take her to court to get custody of your kids. This Martin guy is a joke

I mean, unless you want to reach some sort of agreement…

  3. To be honest I don’t really blame the dad. But we don’t know enough about the relationship between Irsay and the mother. Is she his tenant? A lover? An employee? It’s all in the details we are not privy to.

  4. Does Irsay live in the same home? The story reads to me like they are renting or staying in a home owned by Irsay, but makes it sound like it’s not his actual residence. Confusing!

  5. This guy is a loser, won a million dollars in the lottery in 97, now he refuses to support his children as ordered by the court. So his only chance is to use them as a money bank. I don’t care how bad Irsay, this Martin guy is pathetic.

  6. Great strategic approach. Sure he’s guilty. If he can’t stay away, then he should be ordered to. I don’t believe that he should be endangering kids, or influencing them with his illegal activities.

Way to go Dad! The article doesn’t even allude to any payments – that is not what this is about. The court isn’t going to order him to pay, but will issue an injunction for the criminal to stay away.

  7. Um… If you don’t want your children to be near the LANDLORD of your home, the answer isnt to remove the landlord from HIS property, the answer is to MOVE YOUR CHILDREN out of there!!

    Unbelievable!!!

  8. I wouldn’t want to be around this despicable owner either. He may have lots of money, but he was born into it. He wouldn’t know how to live responsibly if he was one of us.

Why this clown hasn’t been punished by the league yet is bewildering.

LOL @ some of the comments here.

He’s not suing for money! He’s suing for custody of his child.”

Not really. He has joint custody but was ordered by the court to pay child support payments and he has refused to do so citing poverty. So if he gets full custody, he would be the one receiving child support payments. So yes, it is about the money.

  10. I wouldn’t want that creep within 500 miles of a child. Even — or especially — his own.

  11. If Irsay has a relationship with this woman and they shack up together, his relationship and lifestyle is certainly relevant. If the issue is custody and fitness to parent, it’s even more relevant regardless of whether the father is behind on child support. Wealth doesn’t necessarily guaranty great parenting skills.

  12. If the movie “Deliverance” were set in the mid-west, all three of these adults would have significant roles.

  13. Earth to readers. Earth to readers. Irsay moved his mistress into this house and continues to go there to see her. He was apparently on his way there when he got busted. If my kids lived there I would want to take custody of them too, as well as just about all of you. Good grief folks.

  14. From the linked article, he is also alleging that Irsay and the ex-wife are also preventing him from seeing his ADULT children. WTH? How can they prevent the ADULT children from seeing their dad? Maybe the ADULT children don’t want to see their dad?

  15. I hope they find out that he stores the motherload of the pills in the basement of that house. Maybe herr Goodell will have enough evidence THEN to maybe, just maybe, discipline this cretin.

  16. Love that Irsay is considered the worst owner in football by people because he has a personal substance abuse problem. Meanwhile real scumbags like Dan Snyder and Jimmy Haslam are a-ok.

  17. If the dad’s wishes are genuine and if he really is looking out for his kids best interests, then I back this up 100%.
I have to say if my kids were living in a house owned by this arrogant jerk, who obviously has some issues, I would feel the same way. I also see this not going well for Irsay as I can see him saying something during his testimony that could raise a red flag.

  18. Irsay is the biggest trainwreck of any owner in the history of professional sports.

I think that honor goes to Marge Schott or Donald Sterling. Irsay is flawed, but he doesn’t appear to be evil.

How is trying to get custody going to get him Money? Irsay won’t have to pay anything to anyone.

  21. This story seems to be missing parts. What’s the relationship to Irsay?
    ______

Irsay was providing this dude’s wife a place to live. The place the woman happened to be found dead.
She was a reported addict too.

But that was the extent of the relationship, Irsay says…

  22. I am a landlord and the only time I show up at the place is to rent it, fix it, or inspect it upon the tenant leaving.

This seems like a pure money grab.

Wrong… Schott and Sterling are just old fashioned racists like most owners were years ago. This guy is a drug and alcohol-fueled womanizing, child-endangering, season-throwing lunatic!!

Irsay won’t, the guy’s ex-wife will if he has sole custody because he is already claiming that he’s broke and cannot afford to pay the child support he was ordered to. So if he was to get sole custody (which is what he is suing for) he would need a new revenue source to provide for them. If he cares so much about his children why hasn’t he paid child support?

Apparently you’ve never heard of Donald Sterling and have been living under a rock for the last couple of months.

  26. This is a legal Hail Mary by the father. It’s nearly impossible for the father to wrest full custody away from the mother in child custody cases.

If you read the article, the father is $3,000 in arrears on child support, still owes his wife $2,000 in attorney fees from the original divorce settlement, his home is being foreclosed, and he’s acting as his own attorney–presumably because he can’t afford one.

He can argue he’s doing this “for the welfare of his children,” but he sure seems like an opportunist who is jealous that his ex hooked up with a billionaire to me.

  27. Hmm…So how many million dollar homes owned by a Trust, which is owned by the Colts, which are owned by Irsay, are sprinkled around the greater Indy Metro area?
May want to get a list of Irsay’s homes and start looking for 30-something addicted women floating in the pool..face-down.
Gonna get interesting as they start peeling the layers of this onion…stay tuned…

  28. Most people shouldn’t breed. Looks like we have a couple more who shouldn’t have. Children are not property, and objects to use against each other,. They are human beings. I can count on 0 fingers the amount of divorced people I know who haven’t had one or the other or both parents using their kids shamefully as a power, money or status play against the other one. It’s gross.

  29. It seems like the wording here is intentionally ambiguous. The wording on its face makes it seem like Irsay is her landlord. But obviously the implication is that Irsay is her boyfriend and this dude’s kids live with him. If not, why be so vague and leave it up to any interpretation?

  30. Like father Irsay like son. NFL double standards. Irsay knew of his fathers alcohol and unsubstantiated drug use. He took no action growing up as a rich kid having everything given to him. Illinois officials know he’s rich and powerful so they are looking the other way as are the NFL owners. The please have a pity party for me is long in the tooth, he’s not some kid or young adult anymore. His and the leagues action speaks volumes to the double standard.

  31. Ok tell me if you guys had back problems and stuff iam sure all of you would be taking the pills that irsay has to have

  32. Ok tell me if you guys had back problems and stuff iam sure all of you would be taking the pills that irsay has to have

  33. There is a whole other side of this story that isn’t being told. Do people even know what kind of father he is. Maybe this father overdosed on pills that he bought illegally a few years ago. Maybe we should find out the reason this father was discharged from the military, could it be due to alcohol. Maybe he has had several restraining orders placed against him because of violent threats. Maybe he has a gambling addiction, and makes several trips to casinos in a month. It’s amazing that he can’t afford child support because he’s allegedly poor. I think that just maybe this “father” is looking to fatten up his wallet.
