Randy Moss, Donovan McNabb take shots at Jason Garrett

When the Cowboys go to training camp, all eyes will be on quarterback Tony Romo as he comes back from back surgery.

But the blame for their recent woes is being pointed straight upstairs, specifically at head coach Jason Garrett.

Former NFL stars Randy Moss and Donovan McNabb each had pointed comments for the Cowboys’ coaching staff in a segment on FOX Sports, via the Dallas Morning News.

“When you look on paper, it’s every year that the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders have a lot of talent on their team,” Moss said. “I mean, talented, top-end players. For the Dallas Cowboys to keep sputtering every year, it’s not the players – some of it falls on the players – but go on up top and see what’s going on. . . .

“The thing that’s not really fair to Tony Romo is he really hasn’t had that coaching to be able to bring him along. I’m not sitting here busting Garrett or trying to call Garrett out, but there has not been nothing steady in Dallas. It’s always coaches come and go.”

McNabb was even more pointed in his criticism of Garrett.

“I’m still figuring out how he still has a job at this particular point the way we have continued to see this team just continue to crumble,” the former Eagles quarterback said. “You can’t fire Wade Phillips and hire Jason Garrett and Jason Garrett’s doing worse than Wade Phillips was doing. That’s just not going to get it done. What team is going to follow that?”

Garrett has been able to survive this long, but his 29-27 record and three straight 8-8 finishes have invited the criticism.

  1. DMcNabb is the single most overrated and least professional player of the past quarter century… he should not be seen or heard from again… him talking exceeds lack of credibility,it is offensive…

but, yes, Garrett is a bit like McNabb… he is completely unqualified, is terrible at his job, and has very little self respect… but, he is getting paid, and, who else would take Cowboys job with JJ as GM… I would not really call Garrett a HC

    but McNabb…. this is offensive

  2. McNabb is right for once!

Must be personal experience honing his keen insight on this subject… Or the fact that Garrett still having a job is as crazy as Jerry still running the team… which is as crazy as slamming a frying pan into your face…

  3. McNabb And Moss have done so much in their careers…(BARF) I’ll agree on one thing the cowboys need consistency not only at head coach but at OC!!

  4. “You can’t fire Wade Phillips and hire Jason Garrett and Jason Garrett’s doing worse than Wade Phillips was doing. That’s just not going to get it done. What team is going to follow that?”

I think people continue to stick a microphone in McNabb’s face for pure comedic value. The guy can’t put an intelligent sentence together.

  5. Can’t wait to to the backlash McNabb gets, gonna be funny. He won SO many games, and probably as many SBs as whatever current cowboy player is gonna call him out on twitter… And former cowboys greats will agree with him that Garrett and JJ gotta go, even if they say something. Great stuff.

  6. Randy’s quote about ‘talented top end players” and Jerry being the worst GM accusations don’t jive nettrolls. which is it? Is Jerry so bad his stewardship dooms the Cowboys to at best 8-8? Or do they have top end players acquired through the draft and UFDA? It can’t be both, and salary cap problems have largely been addressed, and the biggest veteran FA the team has signed lately was Brandon Carr.

  7. Garrett is still employed as the head coach because he allows Jerry Jones to be his puppet master. Wade Phillips, Dave Campo and Garret are all just weak willed enough to let Jerry run the show with no pushback. Jerry will never hire someone who challenges his decisions. Fact.

  8. “I’m still figuring out how he still has a job at this particular point.”

I said the same thing about McNabb for 4-5 years.

  9. The problem is that only “yes” men will work for JJ. Garrett is just that. What top notch coach would want to always be subject to sideline visits during a game. As long as JJ owns that team they are capped at around 8-8 which is fine by me. JJ’s little football brain will only get worse from there.

  10. It’s cute that McNabb thinks that Garrett has any control of that team. JJ wanted a puppet and he got a puppet in Garrett.

JJ picked the OC, DC and all the assistant head coaches.

Garrett doesn’t go to the bathroom without JJ’s approval.

  11. Well, they’re right. It’s puzzling how he’s still the coach. They’ve literally tried everything as far as assistants on both sides of the ball. Jerry is definitely still a problem, but that team has shrunk at crucial moments the past few years as the division was right there for the taking, and that lays right at the feet of the coach.

  12. Garrett and Jerrah have such a bizarre relationship. Garrett knows this is the only NFL HC gig he will ever have, and Jerrah knows that for all of Garrett’s faults, no HC that is any better will put up with him. Co-dependency at its finest, but unfortunately, a lot of very talented players and all of the Cowboys’ fans have paid the price for it.

  13. Leave it to former vikings players who have never won it all to be talking down other teams and attempting to have another Cowboys coach fired.

Jerry Jones has fired every coach in Cowboys history except Bill Parcells. If he had Tom Landry thrown out of the building, Jerry will have no problem firing another coach. That is not the problem.

  14. Garrett should wear a WWJJD cap. It looks like for every coaching decision he makes he’s thinking, “What would Jerry think about this?”.

  15. As an eagles fan, I love Jason Garrett. He always manages to run the cowboys season into the ground just well enough that allas (no D) is unable to make the playoffs; and unable acquire a high first round draft pick that will turn into a superstar.

  16. The new reality for the Cowboys is as follows: This organization is no longer about winning. This is a brand, and Jerry’s brand by himself. He is using the new stadium as one gigantic ATM machine for himself and his family. The players have no respect for Garrett because they all know he is a paper tiger, and Jerry is there to apease them the same way Al Davis was. Jerry has crafted everything exactly how he wants it and with no player discipline, you get what you got last year which was statistically the single worst Cowboy defense ever fielded. They are a year older now with fewer talented players which only points to a 6-10 season. Jerry will have to fire Garrett at that point but look for him to hire another young, inexperienced assistant to by his Yes man while Jerry sits back and rakes in all of his dollar bills, all courtesy of the the football team that he owns, and that we have to root for despite how he conducts his operations.

  17. I just want to know, does anyone remember that Jeff Fischer is bascially a .500 coach, but i don’t hear alot of people knocking him. He is consider one of the better coaches in the league. He did get the Titans to the Super Bowl once. But he is still an average coach at best. I’m just saying.

  18. I hate to say it but I agree with Moss. This team has a lot of talent but the playcalling has become absolutely horrible. What I really get ticked at is Garrett was the OC under Phillips. It wasn’t the defenses fault back then – you can’t expect your D to continually go out and bail your offense out. There is no imagination with that offense. It was like when Sean Payton was in Dallas – once he got away from Parcells, it was like night and day.

Don’t put the blame on Romo – no qb can win with Garrett around. He has to go and bring in Chucky!!!

  19. I wish someone would come up with something new other than “JJ is the problem”. Garrets first year calling plays was under Phillips, nobody would cigure them out all season (13-3). Since then he has not evolved his playbook and teams have him pegged. I can call the draw play everytime.. too easy.

The addition of Linehan will hopefully bring in a few more creative ideas. He did have Reggie Bush and Calvin Johnson to play with so maybe Murray and Bryant will give him similar opportunities. This team needs to make the play clock tick and keep the defense off the field.. We need long drives that pay out with points, namely TD’s. With the O-Line solidified and potential cap room next season I expect to see a big change on defense after this season is over. The question will be about Garret coming back.. I think if he misses playoffs then he is done. I think he might actually have to win a playoff game or he is gone. There are a few college coaches here in Texas I wouldnt mind seeing on the Cowboys sideline next season.. just saying.

  20. If Parcells couldn’t get it done with Jerry, no coach can. The Cowboys are going to stay this way while Jerry runs the show. Don’t like it? Then stop giving him your money!

  21. I’ve never heard anyone say the Raiders have talent once, let alone every year. Just washed up bums spoutin off.

  22. Randy Moss’s 1st statement shows his high level of intelligence. Randy, who played when Randy wanted to play, is as certifiable a nut job that has played in the last 20 years. If Randy doesn’t like the H.C., then I think the HC must be doing something right.

  23. My only question is… “what ‘top notch talent’ ?”

Just how many great players do they have?

I count only one, Dez. That’s it. Now that DeMarcus Ware is gone, they don’t have a single player on defense that make OCs worry.

They’re building a decent O-line, with the recent picks, but that’s about it..

I really am tired of all the talking heads say ‘they have so much talent’.. well maybe they just don’t.

  24. They’re both right. Garrett is horrible. Icing his own kicker, letting the clock run when you have 2 TO’s and need to go another 50 yrds, not running the ball when you’re up 25 points in the second half, etc.

    Signed A Cowboys Fan

  25. McNabb was right about Shanahan, and does anyone thing he’s wrong about Garrett? Feel free to dislike McNabb as a player but that doesn’t mean he’s wrong.

  26. Been fan of cowboys all my life. I’ve even known a few but few things wont change and some need too. Jerry Jones need to be GM not coach until that happens nothing really gets done. Garrett is not a coach. He did nice job when Wade got fired but should never been made head coach after that. Cowboys need a strong coach, Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, the Jimmy Johnson style coaches.
Jerry owns the team and will not take advice for someone that is not equal to him and that is everyone on this planet. McNabb isn’t wrong even tho he did not play that well in the last years of his career. Everyone knows Garrett is nothing more than 3 string ex QB and Jones is a egotistic moron when it comes to football.

  27. I agree with Moss and McNabb and that scares me. They are not people I normally think of when I think of intelligent, objective analysis.

  28. I personally witnessed Randy Moss walk down the field on pass plays more times than I can count. I also watched Donovan McNabb play air guitar moments before producing a turd like performance, giving Dallas their only playoff win in 16 years. Both these jabronis should stifle…

  29. Fire Jerry? Coach Jerry Jones has three Super Bowl though. Plus, he had 800 Million to buy the team….and 1 Billion to build a great stadium and a new practice facility – Jerry is doing his job…..now let’s see if the coaches can step up

  30. People really don’t pay attention. Garrett’s offense puts up top 5-10 numbers every single season. Every single one.

It’s the defense. Plain and simple. It’s not Jerry Jones…go ahead, tell me one “Jerry Jones splash player” that they’ve signed. Point me toward one Jerry Jones move in the last 3 years. Don’t worry, I’ll wait.

This team is headed in the right direction, with Garrett, as long as the defense can play a little catch up and be half was decent. The defense was the worst in the league last year and they went 8-8. Think if they just become avg…does that split that loss column?

People hang on to this Jerry Jones thing because they don’t watch the Cowboys. They still have this same redundant meme stuck in their head that the media spews out, with zero evidence.

There is a hundred times more evidence favoring Jerry Jones becoming a better “GM” than there is against it. Go look at the first round picks the last 5 years, the worst move was trading up for Mo but who can blame him when he was universally called the best defensive player in that draft.

Keep reaching. It’s the defense, period.

Oakland Raiders always have top notch players? Who?
I dunno, but my team’s HC sure loves Raiders. They’ve had about a billion of them: Tommy Kelly, LaMont Jordan, Moss, Burgess, Another DL whose name escapes me right now, more of a run stopper, etc etc. I don’t get it.

Moss is saying exactly what I’ve always thought: Romo’s main issue is his coaching staff. A great coaching staff /OC would manage him in those situations in which he struggles. Their playcalling would take care of it. Romo is 90% great, 10% issues. Most teams would love to have a QB that good. He’s capable of being a SB winning QB.

  32. We can criticize the cowboys until hell freezes over, JJ has this idea that he is the best GM thats ever graced the NFL. He surrounds himself with YES men. That need a job Jason Garret was a mistake from the very beginning Anytime you pass on a Randy Moss but pickup a McClain, its something with the drinking water or he just plain stupid .

  33. Hate them all you want but everyone on here knows that what they say is the absolute truth. I dont know what the love affair but any other coach would have already been fired and working for another team.

  34. the cowboys have 3 first round draft picks on the OL they need to let the big boys eat. any HC knows that let them eat,

  35. on one hand, there is no less professional player I can think of than McNabb… on the other hand, when a guy with as low a character as McNabb takes a shot at you.. you really need to take notice

  36. Two “has beens” who “never were” talking trash… Now funny is that…??

We all know that JJ calls the shots… Garrett must be making some good bucks to stay with it this long…

News Flash: Another 8-8 season and he’s gone…

Don’t know why JJ just take over the job…!!

As J Johnson said on his “legends” last week, JJ wanted in on the football glory…. SB 30 was a long time ago…..

  37. Randy’s comment I can take. But Mcnabb, NO! I don’t think there is a commentator in sports that hate the Cowboys worse than him. Besides Garrett needing to be fired is old news.

  38. Once again two idiots speaking. How many super bowls did they win? Anyway it’s not the starting talent its the backup talent. Dallas over pays starters and has no quality back ups. In this league back ups are the key.

  39. umakenosense says: Jul 10, 2014 3:23 PM

“Once again two idiots speaking. How many super bowls did they win?…”

One of these “idiots” is a sure best as a first-ballot HoF’er. The other dude made 4 NFC Championship games in a row ( please remind me how many Romo has made?) and has more playoff wins in his “crappy” career than the Cowboys have in the past 2 decades.

Boys have sucked since Jimmy’s guys left. And Romo is nothing more than a stats champion and a big-game choker. Heck even Lyle Orton came in for the last game and threw for over 300 yards but game the game away at the end, ala Romo. JJ and Garret are laughing stocks…

  40. If the vikings kept going 8-8 their fans would be calling the coach “top 5” and “first ballot HOF’er”.

Let a generation of disappointment fall on the Cowboys and their fans will have their expectations lowered enough so that mediocre is okay.

By the 3rd generation of disappointment, like the vikings, they will think that mediocre = superstar.

A third of the NFL would be happy with 8-8.

  41. It is Jerry Jones more than any other element of the Dallas Cowboys that is the reason for the Boys demise. I have seen guys like this all my life that have excelled in something and tried to do the same with something else and the odds of that for anybody is pretty low percentage. Besides his ego is his own worst enemy and that was proven during the Super Bowl years when Jimmy Johnson was given the credit for the victories This upset Jones so much he couldn’t contain himself and decided he would prove he deserved the credit for those victories and fired Jimmy Johnson and the rest is history.

  42. Every year the Raiders have a lot of talent on their team? I guess they all just pulled a Randy and quit. The Raiders were so bad last season they could only beat the Chargers once. I didn’t see a lot of talent.

  43. “there has not been nothing steady in Dallas”

Oh, but yes there has been a steady constant and his name is WADE WILSON.

He has been Romo’s QB coach for the entire time he’s been there and I believe that is why Romo hasn’t been coached up and plays poorly in the clutch.

  44. All I know is 3yrs in a row 8-8. Always playing for the NFC East Championship in the last game of the season. And always coming up short. Sooner or later the players have to be accountable for their play on the field. Say what you want, Garrett knows football. And he definitely knows the QB position. Having played in the league he has a lot of experience. I love to hear the haters, cause when they figure it out it will be even sweater. Now JJ might be a egotistical maniac. But Them Boy will be just fine

  45. Say Jerry is a bad GM all you want, but he forced Tuna to take Ware even tho the genius did not want to, he hire Johnson to start with so he couldn’t of been so dumb.People laughed when he picked Travis Fredrick last year when all the “geniuses” said he was a 3rd round talent. Oh and with the pick they got fron the 49ers also picked up Terrance Williams He picked up Demarco Murray in the third round 23 picks passed on Dez Bryant, Jerry didn’t.. I will say this, Jerry hasn’t been so good picking coaches after Johnson, but I have no problem with his drafts.

  46. Yes, it’s entirely possible that all you know is 8-8. Football is so much more than one person or one coach.

  47. Yes, it’s all Wade Wilson’s fault that an UDFA is now the 5th best QB in NFL history.

  48. “5th best QB in NFL”
    Stats don’t mean everything dufus.

When Danny White was the QB, he had great stats, too, but he was also know as a choker.

Championships are what counts and 2 playoff appearances and 1 playoff win in 16 yrs are unacceptable for this organization.

  49. mb34 says:

“Stats don’t mean everything dufus. ”

Ah yes. Another football illiterate who thinks that QB is the only player that matters on a team. Someone I’m sure that would take Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson over Dan Marino and Dan Fouts.

You want the QB that gives you the best chance to win every week. That would be Romo. There isn’t another QB in this league that could take a team with consistently the worst defense in football and have them play for the division title every year.

Championships are what counts, and the team with the better defense and running game win more Championships than the teams with just a great QB.

  50. When Danny White was the QB, he had great stats, too, but he was also know as a choker.

I have never heard Danny White being called a choker. Danny was a decent QB, nothing great but very servicable, that had huge shoes to fill in Dallas. Now for a guy who started his career as a punter he was great. lol.

Danny, and I’m afraid with Tony, are just in Dallas at the wrong time. People cam Mock Romo for the 8-8 years but without him they would have probably been one or two win years.Took a team giving up 27 points a game in 2013 and had a winning record at QB. Drew Brees couldn’t even do that in 2012.
