King: Washington will have a new name by 2016

Every Monday morning, we take a stroll through Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column in search of nuggets that fit within our never-ending non-stop shop of NFL news and whatnot.  Today, we found a potent piece of whatnot buried in the column.

Off for the last month or so, King dropped the following bombshell in the 10 things he thinks:  “I think the Washington franchise will have a new team name by 2016.”

With a Ruthian finger to the outfield bleachers, the reporter who no longer has a Ruthian physique became the first national media type to put a date certain on change.  In fact, other than Senator Harry Reid (who has predicted a change within three years), we can’t think of any other prominent person who has provided a timetable for changing the name.

While King’s “I think” feature often has a wistful, speculative quality, he doesn’t throw dirt.  He typically has heard something specific that makes him think what he thinks.

“I know things,” he’ll often say to me when we get together before a Sunday slate of games, with a twinkle in his eye that may or may not be attributable in whole or in part to caffeine.

Chances are that, in saying that the name will change by 2016, King has indeed been told something by someone in position to know the truth that the current plan is for the name to change by 2016.

It’s a tight timetable, and it suggests that the NFL and/or the team have moved much closer to deciding that it no longer makes sense to have a lingering (and intensifying) debate regarding whether the name of one of the NFL’s 32 franchises is racially offensive.

  1. And when with the Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles, Blackhawks, and Indians all have new names?

  2. Im not desperately searching for ways to be offended so I don’t really care if they have a new name of not. But it might be worth it just do I don’t have to read about it anymore.

  3. I hope for King’s sake he isn’t suffering from some of the same mental lapses Reid evidently suffers. Either way, nothing here to see.

  4. Call them the “Washington Chronically Unemployed Alcoholic Welfare Leeches.” It’s a more accurate term, and it’s not racist.

  5. The day scumbag leftists never stop. The want football disbanded and will not stop until it ceases to exist . From the name change , rule changes, lawsuits , unionizing college teams. It never ends. They want the destruction of everything to bring misery to all

  6. Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles, Blackhawks, and Indians aren’t racist names. Now the Cleveland Indians mascot.. He’s another story.

  7. “And when with the Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles, Blackhawks, and Indians all have new names?”

This is getting tiring. The difference is that those names are not insulting.

  8. Is there a Redskins fan who doesn’t think the name will change at this point?
Obviously won’t be this year…2015 is possible. With a 2016 prediction King gives himself an extra year to be correct. Not really going out on a limb to me.

  9. You have a better chance statistically of being an older generation white male and hating the name change than any other demographic. Maybe you old people should do some objective introspection and figure it out.

  10. King is a liberal putz. He is rooting for it but this PC stuff will die down. The majority of Redskin and football fans want the name to stay the same. Just because liberal panty wastes like Florio and King want it changed does not mean it is going to happen..

  11. Is Dan Snyder selling the team in 2016? At least that’s what I would do if I were him. I wouldn’t want to own that team with all the criticism that comes with it.

  12. Peter King. I want this guy’s check! He just spouts off on whatever and act like he has license to all that is true. Yet never held accountable. See ya in 3 PK. Have another sammich!

  13. I’d rather a owner change. but I’ll take what we can. Just change it to the Warriors, then team up with the Wounded Warrior project. One year after that, people will not even care about the Skins name.

  14. I don’t know why they are fighting it so hard. The NFL/Washington are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to sell new/and old stuff.

Think about it: if Washington changes it’s name & uniform design there will be a ton of people who aren’t even fans going to the websites to buy jerseys and other apparel. Hell, they can sell both new and retro apparel. Instead, the team is fighting this tooth and nail.

I, for one, hope it happens.

  15. I think….peanut butter will actually be jelly by 2016

Do my thoughts count as bombshell news as well fellas?

  16. (“I know things,” he’ll often say to me when we get together before a Sunday slate of games, with a twinkle in his eye that may or may not be attributable in whole or in part to caffeine.)

He was on the money about Brett Favre. Wait, what?

If I want to hear some white privileged blowhard complain about coffee or travel, PK is my go to guy.

  17. Considering we killed off 90% of their population and stole 99% of their land I have a hard time calling them welfare leeches. I’d argue it would be extremely racist to even suggest that term. Maybe that’s why so many can’t figure out why the name is racist.

  18. people need to stop getting so butthurt over everything. bunch of over-sensitive pansies that are just looking to cause problems. How are any of these Native American names any more hostile or abusive than, say the Fighting Irish?

Lets just change the name to the Washington “completely non-offensive cute fluffy baby bunny rabbits”, then they can plant flowers on the turf at Fed Ex Field, and both teams can sit at the 50 yard line during halftime, holding hands and singing cumbaya.

  19. “Just change it to the Warriors, then team up with the Wounded Warrior project.”

Can’t tell if you were joking or serious, and no disrespect to “wounded warriors,” but that was pretty funny.

  20. Hope he’s right. Not enjoying the race/culture wars invading football as it has over this.

  21. PK is an absolute turd…stopped reading him about 7 years ago, I got tired of reading about his daughter playing field hockey or some other sport like that.

I cant see the name being changed while Snyder owns this team.

  22. Like I said before, (and Peter King has once again proven this), this issue is about the influence of the sports media much more so than about the Redskins name. Peter King (along with many other who work with him) has been using his post at SI and NBC to push for this for years.

Why? Because he believes that this is something that needs to be addressed, and anyone who disagrees with him is either a racist, or just too stupid to figure out his point of view. That alone is King’s justification for trying to impose his will on Dan Snyder.

Well Peter, as long as Snyder continues to own the team, you will have no say in this. If the name “Redskins” offends you this much, then get a group of owners together and purchase the team, and change the name yourselves. If you can’t do that, then accept reality and go back to your full-time job, which, if I remember correctly, isn’t the promotion of a social agenda, but rather sports reporting.

Hopefully SI realizes this season that their best football writer is Don Banks, and they start handing him responsibility.

Oh, so it’s perfectly acceptable for those teams’ mascots to dress up as Native American stereotypes and the fans to do the same? Are you trying to tell me the Atlanta Braves’ tomahawk chop isn’t inappropriate?

  24. No doubt King does hear things but everybody in the NFL knows how to play him–most of his scoops get delivered to him by one side or the other because they want the news out there. Not clear why anybody with Washington would want to undermine their official stance by releasing the fact they’re going to shortly have a new name.

  25. They should be able to keep the name but be required to field 25% Native American players on the squad (see CFL rules). That is I believe what the kids call – #Keeping it Real. How fun would that be to watch?!

  26. Whoa, whoa, whoa! You got this headline all wrong! King “thinks” Washington will have a new name by 2016. You must remember that this guy commits to absolutely nothing! He is not saying this will happen, but only he “thinks” it will happen. That way when it likely doesn’t happen he can’t be held accountable for being wrong. For someone who spends a lot of time with King you certainly don’t know much about him or his writing style.

Indians are the only one there who could be an issue aside from the R-words.

  28. So when will the Native American high schools change their name? I guess Peter knows better than you know, native Americans themselves.

  29. STOP! Stop promoting just one side of the argument. I am Native American and the Redskins name is one of the few times that our race is mentioned…for ANYTHING.
Sure the lefties will try to use for their “causes” by branding all Native Americans as “victims” by saying that we, as a group, not individually, are “offended” or are “victimized” by some private business or corporation.
What they NEVER say is how the federal government continues to seize our land and limit our opportunities to advance ourselves, keep our traditions alive, and live our lives as we please. Instead the feds encroach on our rights, they sick the EPA, BLM, and PETA on us constantly so that we “know our place”.
If the Redskins name continues, it might cause people to pause and wonder how we are being treated, and help us free ourselves from the feds.
If the lefties have their way, we will be a forgotten people, except of course when some democrat liberal wants our votes and says that he/she is looking out for our interests – as a group – not individually.
Keep the Redskins name – save a forgotten piece of North American history.

Actually Ms. Blackhorse, the woman who headed up the patent lawsuit against the Redskins, stated the Chiefs’ name is offensive and needs to be changed. So there goes your argument.

-Indians are the only one there who could be an issue aside from the R-words.-

So you think once the Redskins change their name this issue is done? Must be nice to live in your world.

  33. For all those who get “offended” about the Redskins team name, think about this for a second- would any team owner or marketing department come up w/ a team name that is meant to be offensive?? The answer is no. People getting their panties in a bunch over this just refuse to read the facts. Google Redskins-Smithsonian. Stop reading what these clowns like Peter King say and learn the real history behind the team name. Enough w/this crap.

  34. Wake me up when they have a court hearing, if you think Snyder is throwing money at bloggers and lobbyists, oh just wait until it’s time for him to hire big money lawyers to cite 2 Supreme Court rulings, 61 teams in 22 states having the name “Redskins”, the national poll among Native Americans, and the fact that these same groups claiming this to be a racial slur are not protesting the name used among Native Americans for their schools. He will probably be bribed with big money to change the name, he will have us Redskins fans to consider it, feel it out, and go from there.

  35. King is terrible: just a lazy guy with an ego the size of Texas who likes to write about his hotels and fancy coffees. Blech.

  36. King’s lack of objectivity is why I don’t read his stuff. Like Graziano much better. Write about the subject, but leave your personal feeling out of it. Wasn’t surprised one bit that he’s pro Kluwe an anti-Vikings. Shame on you, again, King.

  37. I hope if and/or when the name is changed, Snyder decides to go the complete and opposite direction of Native Americans. And that the name not have ANYTHING to do with Indians. Or, animals. That just gives PETA something to cry about.

  38. I’m more offended by the Cowboys, Patriots and Steelers, and I think they should all be sanctioned.

Put another way, whatever Peter King predicts, it is probably much better to go in the opposite direction.

I therefore predict that the Washington Redskins will NOT have a different team name by 2016.

———————————————————-Neither is REDSKINS. But that won’t stop the far left from attacking them. In the 1970s, when this kind of liberal BS was at its height, Stanford University was pressured to change their name from “Indians.” The same thing will happen with those other names if the liberals have their way.

  43. Keep the name, change the mascot and logo to a goofy cartoon Fightin’ Redskin Potato. The new branding sells a ton of new merchandise, appeases (or at least quiets) the Native Americans, and keeps the fans and Mr. Snyder happy. Everybody wins. Especially potato farmers. Think of all the new Idaho based fans the team will have.

  46. Fabled writer/broadcaster Myron Cope many years ago called them the Wash Dirtyskins, perhaps he was clairvoyant?

  47. Would you call a Native American “Chief” to their face? Seriously though, I hate that question because I heard it asked so many times about the Redskins.

No doubt about it, if the Redskins fall, teams like the Chiefs are next. Heck, the Chiefs might change their name before the Redskins just because their owner might bend before Snyder does. This is probably when it pays to have an owner like Snyder.

  48. All Peter King says is that he thinks the name will change. A simple statement of opinion, and now this site runs with it like it’s some hot news. I would take it more seriously if they also publish the views of those who say they don’t think it will change. Although putting a poll up is a good start, and I noticed that those who ‘think it’ll never change’ is leading. I can’t wait for this site to try and poke holes in their own survey.

  49. King, having said this, probably just made Snyder dig in his heels to ensure that King’s predicition fails.

When I was in the US Army many years ago, there were two separate occasions where I served with a Native American brother. In bth cases everyone addressed both of them as “Chief”. No one, including the Native American brothers took it as offensive from all appearances.

Sorry if that story doesn’t meld in well with the social atmosphere we find ourselves in today, where more often than not, the parties most “offended” at anything are guilt-filled whites.

  51. Funny how the only people that talk are the ones on the wrong (inevitably losing) side of the debate. It’s like they’re figuratively going down swinging. Quit whining and accept that this is 2014, no more Redskins, no more Jim Crow, no more Hebrew slaves in Egypt. I don’t have an opinion about something like this because my life doesn’t change either way. But geez… Get with the times and grow up crybabies.

  52. Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles, Blackhawks, and Indians were never used in derogatory contexts. A chief is the leader of a tribe; Seminole is the name of a tribe; Blackhaw is the name of a tribe leader; the term Indian are used to describe a population much like the words black, white, hispanic, etc.; Redskin is a derogatory term for an Indian. It’s very disappointing that in 2014, we still have people fighting for the right to use derogatory language and claim it’s ok, or heritage that should be honored. Change the name, stop the hate.

  53. LOL What is he smoking? There’s no way the name will change in just under two years. Sponsors aren’t pulling out, Snyder has tons of support, the Redskins (oh the horror) are the NINTH most valuable team in the world, and the majority of Native Americans don’t find the name offensive. I seriously think there’s a greater chance the Redskins win a Super Bowl by 2016 than the name changing.

  55. So I guess Goodell is going to be striking a deal with Snyder because we all know Snyder isn’t caving just to cave. He’s going to get something good out of this and I don’t blame him for milking it.

Goodell has been busy making deals with teams. First he made one with the Rams to take Sam, because they didn’t truly want the media circus and obviously had a plan from the minute they took him to simmer the hype, then making a deal with Snyder, and I’m sure he is going to end up making a deal with congress to get them off their back. He then got the NFLPA to agree to a CBA that has owners VERY happy.

We can hate on Goodell all we want but he has done a great job of making owners happy and that’s why he makes 44M, or whatever it is, a year.

  56. Anyone who can’t understand that the term “redskins” is disparaging and a racial slur is either ignorant or a total fool. The team name needs and deserves to be changed, and it will probably happen sooner than later. It’s the 21st century, not the 19th. Grow up and stop insulting people by using racist nicknames. (And don’t start comparing “redskins” with “chiefs” or “warriors.” “Chiefs” and “warriors” are not inherently racist terms. Despite Dan Snyder’s ridiculous insistence otherwise, “redskins” is definitely racist. Anyone with even a modicum of common sense can recognize that it’s a demeaning appellation, not an admirable term of respect. And if you disagree, I invite you to walk up to any Native American and call them a “redskin” to their face. See what happens next.)

  63. Cue the conservatives to come scrambling in to defend a racial slur that they see as “harmless”… because it doesn’t offend them.

  64. Anyone who believes that the term “redskins” is disparaging and a racial slur is either ignorant or sides with racists. Racists may use the term, but that term refers to the paint used for war. Grow up and stop insulting people by calling them “ignorant” or “fools”, just because you don’t know what you are talking about (which by the way makes you the ignorant one and the fool). You saying it is definitely racist, definitely means nothing. I will side with the many Native Americans who have no issue with the term, the name or the team.

  65. I’ve got it! A name that describes the team, its’ fans, the Federal Government, and the city of Washington, D.C. itself!

    Ladies and Gentleman…Your WASHINGTON FOLLY!

  66. The thing is, the media is pushing this down our throats to the point where every time you hear the name, it makes you uncomfortable. This, I believe, is the reason why all of the journalists against the name keep publishing “stories.” Soon enough when you hear Redskins, you will associate it with the issue at hand simultaneously with the football team. That’s one of the reason I stopped reading the articles about the name change, when I hear my football teams name, I don’t want to be reminded about a political tug of war, I want to be reminded of the football team. #HTTR

  67. (I invite you to walk up to any Native American and call them a “redskin” to their face. See what happens next.)

This is an old argument that makes no sense. Of course you would not go up to a Native American and call him Redskin. I also would not call him Chief.

I also would not go up to somebody and call them ‘Catholic’. Or ‘black person’. Or ‘Irishman’. Or ‘white man’. You address somebody by their name, and if you don’t know their name, simply say ‘excuse me sir’. Or ma’am.

Addressing somebody by their ethnicity or religion is inappropriate. Or if you want to take it further, stupid. It does not necessarily mean that the word in question is offensive.

  68. Ok so if the name gets changed what will be an acceptable name? Will they have to put together a panel of people to ensure that no one is offended by the choices for names? Somebody is sure to get offended by what is chosen so are we on our way to just calling them the Washington Professional Football Club?

  69. just don’t let the fans vote on a new name. last time that happened we got the WIZARDS.

  70. People who continue to complain about this issue are not really offended. 90% of those who claim offense are being politically correct in hopes of gaining, or maintaining something. The bottom line is, this is a non issue in a political environment where people want to draw attention from other issues, and assert authority. Or, draw attention to themselves.

  71. Nevermind the fact that original owner George Preston Marshall was a RENOWNED racist that had to be FORCED by the Kennedy administration to allow black players on his team. We’ll also just ignore that he embraced “Dixie” as his fight song, right? This is a team with a racist history and a racist name. And those opposed to changing it, to righting a wrong WILL find themselves on the wrong side of history.

  72. I “know some things” too, and I still “think” this is an issue that’s only being kept alive by a few Native Americans and a couple media sources.

  73. Changing the name is so ridiculous, im so sick of everyones feelings being hurt, everytime someone says boo. The younger generation only jumps on a cause because its cool, or is a fad. There was nothing wrong with Redskins forever, now its cool to bash them. Being gay wasnt cool until people jumped on the bandwagon. Everyone doesn’t deserve a trophy.

I remember when St. Johns had to change their name from ‘Redmen’ to ‘Red Storm’ & I also remember when Illinois stopped having a Native American mascot.

  85. who cares about this name stuff, what kind of coffee and pretentious yuppie beer does King recommend this week?

    (and btw: fwippel won. close/thread)

  86. He has always had it out for the REDSKINS, including keeping Art Monk out of the hall of fame for YEARS longer than he ever should of been… He was the leading pass catcher of his generation & just because he wasn’t flashy like other downfield threats… Art Monk deserved to be in the hall in his first or second year of eligibility… Period. This guy just appears to have an agenda when it regards the REDSKINS. REDSKINS. REDSKINS!

  87. Political correctness be damned. Everyone on both sides shut up and get over it.

  88. So for some reason, in 2013, Peter King finally decided the Redskins name was offensive and stopped using it on his website. This was after using it repeatedly for years with no problem. Get lost. Another P.C. liberal ruining this country.

  89. “Keep the name, change the mascot and logo to a goofy cartoon Fightin’ Redskin Potato. The new branding sells a ton of new merchandise, appeases (or at least quiets) the Native Americans, and keeps the fans and Mr. Snyder happy. Everybody wins. Especially potato farmers. Think of all the new Idaho based fans the team will have.”

Poor idea. There are more red potato fans than Redskins fans. I can’t even imagine their rage at this abuse of the red potato. Signed,
    P. Tater Pocatello, Managing Director,
People For The Ethical Treatment of Potatoes

And by the way, who is Harry Reid?

  90. “with a twinkle in his eye that may or may not be attributable in whole or in part to caffeine.”

There are many substances (a few of them are legal) that will put a twinkle in someone’s eye. Some of the not so legal ones involve amphetamines, which, in addition to a ‘twinkle’ can also be responsible for rapid and significant weight loss and delusional statements. Any connection there?

In the 50’s there was a heavily prescribed weight-loss product called “Ayds”. I’m not lying! It looked like a Kraft caramel candy, except the wrapper said “Ayds”. It was laced with amphetamines. My parents force-fed them to my sister when she was 8, 9 & 10 and almost killed her (from overdose) several times. But she had a real twinkle in her eye and she lost weight. I’m just saying’.

  91. I keep sayin’ it:

Dan Snyder is the one vocal conservative NFL owner and all the forces of PC Hysteria are lining up against him.

And, I keep saying, it’ll be a dead issue by Week 6.

    #offseasonboredom, #presscreatingstories

  92. This ongoing argument is great fun, I hope it goes on for years. Nothing like divisive controversy inside and outside an organization to make things interesting. But if it doesn’t I have some name suggestions.

    The Washington Fightin’ Whities.
    The Washington Wheat Crackers.
    The Washington Scandals.
    The Washinton Rednoses.

Oh what fun, hope I didn’t offend anyone since those names aren’t really racist slurs. Besides, it’s just a team, not race or heritage.

  93. He later added “You can also expect my extremely accurate football predictions to finally hit a 100% success rate in that very same year.”

When asked to elaborate, he responded,”I know these things because I have honed my already otherworldly psychic football powers to an extent that you can’t even imagine.”

King then abruptly left the room claiming that his “brain is hungry” while adding that he’s inexplicably suffering from writer’s block every time it comes to write “whatever that Washington team name is.”

  94. Dear NFL and Washington DC –

I have finally seen the light, and decided to change our beloved team’s name.

Henceforth, we shall be known as the Los Angeles Stars.

    Kiss my %$#, Senator Reid.

    – Dan Snyder

  95. Let the Native Americans speak!

Everybody else shut your ignorant opinionated mouths the hell up!

Most of you silver tongued idiots won’t make the effort to understand what this person is talking about and acknowledge that the name is not offensive, but the continuance avoidance of the real issue that offends them has to do with the constant stealth and interest that owed to them for the stolen possessions including their traditions and disrespect of their ability to decide what’s offensive and oppressive for themselves.

Stop trying to use the Redskins Football team as the scapegoat and distraction from the real oppression enforced by the American government and blowhards that couldn’t care less about true restoration and remuneration of what’s due the Native American Communities still stuck in poverty and relegated to the reservations in substandard living conditions. They call them selves Redskins, but they have never called themselves the reservationists.

You want to take away something that they want to keep, while making them keep something that they want to get rid of.

How ironic is that and who is the racist?

  96. Oklahoma means Okla-humma in Choctaw Native Language. Translation: Red People. If Red People is good enough for a US State than it’s good enough for a ballteam. Red Mesa, AZ. high school: 90%+ Native American: Mascot Name… Redskins. Native American owned Theater in Oklahoma: Redskins Theater. Annenberg Poll: 90% of all NA’s don’t care or support the name. Oh yeah, I’m part Cherokee. Chief Wahoo? yeah, might be a bit offensive but Redskins? Nope.

  97. The New England Patriots should change their logo. Thats definitely a white guy on the helmet. I am offended for people of color that the football team from New England is insinuating that people of color are not patriotic.

  98. To the people who keep saying that all the other names are not offensive and its only the Redskins need to get with it.

These other teams have been named in the lawsuit also, the only publicized name has been the Redskins and the Chiefs modestly.

If the Redskins change their name from this foolish pressure, the others will start falling like dominos. The Chiefs are being exploited just as much as the Redskins by Oneida but the media only wants to concentrate on the Redskins for they believe that it will be the easiest to get changed so that will then begin an onslaught of news reporting for these bum sports writers to write about the others that will be going next.

Check out the lawsuit and names on the list people, that Native American group has listed all Native American names as names that they want removed from teams . From college to the pros. Its a game to the ones not involved and a profit for others to make if they start falling.

  99. Offend, I hate this word , im offended by it, what a bunch of crying no count losers America has become to cry over a team name or a mascot.

Every democrat and soccer mom crying about the world out here today and how their child or their life to is not fair because somebody said or done something, GET OVER IT! Its called life , everyone in America wanted equality and diversity, now you have it and don’t want it, everyone wanted to be able to express themselves, now your only allowed to express yourself if you agree with all the people crying about change for something else.

Crying over nothing, getting involved in things they shouldn’t, its ridiculous to see a country that has had to fight for everything they have to now sit in a corner and cry when someone picks on them and look to the government to change it. People get over this political correctness crap. Not everyone in America finds everything out here as sensitive as all of the sheltered do.

  100. Suppression of Native American Culture, continues. And when the Natives have fully been eradicated from the minds of the masses, their tribulations will be forgotten.
And to this I say, let the team keep it”s honorable name. Why can’t the football team, Redskins, pay homage to the true caregivers of our land? In my mind, they are.

  101. What is insulting about having red skin? hummmm

Who says that Chiefs is not insulting? I know, being 40 years old, I hate being called chief. I understand, its different than If I were and Indian, being called a redskin, but in a way, its still the same. It makes me uncomfortable. So in that regard where being called chief makes me uncomfortable, and being called a redskin makes an Indian uncomfortable, we can not make everyone happy unless we have really boring mascot names. …. Wait.. oh my, I just realized something… ITS JUST A MASCOT NAME… GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!

  102. And who cares what Peter King and other left-wing bullies think? The name isn’t racist, never has been, and nothing they say can change that.

    Hail to the Redskins!

  103. tinbender2000, I get offended everytime I hear someone say that American’s aren’t native to this land and that we “stole” it.

Truth is, “Native American’s” are just as native to this land as we are. They migrated here just like every other race/nationality of people. They just did it earlier.

Science has proven that mankind originated in Africa and the earliest settlers of North America likely got here by crossing the land bridge between Alaska/Russia.
