Panthers sign center Fernando Velasco

The Panthers have huge questions at offensive tackle entering training camp, but they added a little depth in the middle of the line Wednesday.

Via Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, the Panthers have signed center Fernando Velasco. Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson sent out a photo of his former Georgia teammate at the stadium today.

Velasco played well for the Steelers last year subbing for the injured Maurkice Pouncey, before tearing his Achilles in Week 13.

If he’s well, he gives the Panthers a solid backup option behind Ryan Kalil, as they didn’t have much experience in the middle.

  1. Velasco did a great job for the Steelers last year when Pouncey got injured. He was very solid. You got a nice pick up here.

  2. Good signing actually. He played well in spot duty for the steelers.

He was attending church one Sunday, and starting next week for the steelers on a Monday night game. And did well.

Hate to say it, but smart move by a division rival.

  3. This is a blow to the steeler line, he played very well last year

Pouncey is back with Cody Wallace behind him. Velasco was a salary casualty. He did a great job last year. They’re in much better shape with Pouncey back and Munchak giving them guidance.

  4. I think he’ll be a starting guard for us at some point. Shame he cant play tackle.

I think I’m starting to buy-in to Nate Chandler –but I’ve seen Byron Bell play for like three years now.. He’s just not very good.

  5. I have to say that this is a VERY good pickup for Panthers.
I was really holding out hope that the Steelers would re-sign him after the year he had subbing for Pouncey. But, with the extension to Maurkice, it spelled the end to the Steelers ever signing him. Good for him, expect him to put pressure on the starter, and probably replace him before the season starts.
Very good pickup for the Panthers.
