Report: Aldon Smith to meet with Goodell on August 8

49ers linebacker Aldon Smith took a trip to Los Angeles on Wednesday for a hearing wrapping up the case stemming from his ill-advised fake bomb threat at LAX earlier this year.

Smith avoided charges in that incident, but he was sentenced to 12 days in jail on gun and DUI charges that could also lead to discipline from the league. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Smith will be in New York on Friday, August 8 to discuss that possibility with NFL Comissioner Roger Goodell.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh will likely be asked about the report at some point, but we wouldn’t expect him to offer up a confirmation.

Schefter writes that Smith is facing a “significant suspension” as a result of multiple infractions, an opinion that’s held by many others as well. That was also the case when Ravens running back Ray Rice was facing a suspension, though, and it appears that he and his wife were able to convince Goodell to go a different direction during their meeting. Smith will likely try to do the same by focusing on the trip to rehab that kept him out of five games last season and the fact that he’s been sober since then.

If the meeting does go down on the 8th, it will come at the end of a busy stretch for Goodell. He’s scheduled to meet with Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, former Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent and a media contingent looking for answers on the Rice suspension between now and the reported meeting with Smith.

  1. Uh oh! Looks like harbaby and the whiners are going to be “reproached?” by the media. Can’t wait till we see the biggest whiner in football flopping around on the sidelines like a fish when he’s getting beat by the Seahawks. It’s annoying and funny to watch this guys tantrums on the field. Biggest baby in football.

  2. Slap on the wrist… If Aldon Smith played for the Saints it would be out for the year!

  3. Can we just admit that this guy is a crazy, money grubbing underachiever ? The other guy is Aldon Smith.

  4. Smith, Josh Brent, Ray Rice, Ray Lewis D. Suh, etc. etc. The point being that players have quickly learned how to be children around “dad” (Goodell). Break the rules, get in trouble and when your parents discipline you, go shed a tear, pout, bat your eyes at “dad” and he will surely reduce your discipline. NFL discipline has become a real joke, players know they only have to go meet with Roger and all is well…..if not, threaten to appeal or sue and he will definitely cave in then.

  5. Here’s the simple truth with Aldon from a non football perspective. He has about a 1% chance to stay sober. Most alkie’s and addicts go right back to using once the heat blows over. He’s a big time long shot.

His life, his professional career, and his sanity is all on the line this year. Will he make it or will he combust? I hope he makes it and find inner peace and purpose.

Word from Niner camp is he’s unblock able. Simply dominant like never before

  6. 4 games…
yes, this guy is super duper stupid dumb!
really Aldon, bomb threat, how dumb do you have to be?!?! He probably called it in on his cell phone as well!! DOH

  7. He’s still drinking. Go ahead and let him off easy, he’s bound to crash another car.

  8. Well, if Godell puts DUI in the same category as domestic violence then he should be just fine.
I agree…if he was on the Saints…..lifetime ban!

  9. He went to rehab voluntarily and I imagine that’s something the NFL wants to encourage. As a result, I believe he’ll be credited for the 5 games he voluntarily missed. So, 6-8 game suspension reduced to 1-3 due to rehab.

Also, there was no bomb threat.

  10. It’s good, for his sake, that some of you people weren’t his judge. You’d have him hanged for a DUI. It’s also good that he’ll be around for a long long time, lighting up your qb.

  11. The only report from LAPD on Aldon Smith being “drunk” was “He wasn’t considered to be intoxicated but it appeared that he “may” have been drinking earlier in the day.” Look it up.

  12. Doesn’t matter how many times you wipe it out, it’s still the truth:

“The suspect then became belligerent and uncooperative with the process and with the TSA agent, making a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb before proceeding toward the gate area,” Sgt. Karla Ortiz said in a statement.

It was unclear whether Smith had been drinking alcohol, but it was “not relevant or a factor for his arrest and booking,” Ortiz said.

  13. Boy would I love to be a fly on the wall during this meeting. Interested to see what “The San Francisco/Santa Clara NFL Franchise” is going to do.

They’re going to go with the next man up, Corey Lemoier, Lynch or Dan Skuta

  15. Guy has already missed 5 games, 5 game suspension with time missed considered. He misses no time this year.

Considering precedent has been set w Marshawn Lynch who has exactly the same rap sheet except he ran over and almost killed a lady drunk and only missed 3 games.

  16. Marshawn didn’t shoot off any guns.

Marshawn also blew 0.10 whereas Aldon blew 0.19 twice on the charges he paid to have go away and 0.16 on these current ones. Who knows what his BAC would have been if LAX had bothered to test him.

But I can see why you feel the need to make comparisons. If Smith actually had to deal with the consequences of his actions, rather than make excuses and comparisons, he’d probably be in jail as we type.

  17. Epilog:

4 games for violation of policy for abuse of substance.
5 games for violation of policy for personal conduct.

    9 games.
