Montreal Alouettes add Jeff Garcia to coaching staff

With their offense sputtering, the Montreal Alouettes have added one of the CFL’s biggest success stories to their coaching staff.

The club has hired former quarterback Jeff Garcia, who starred in the CFL and NFL, to assist the offense.

“He brings tremendous experience, great leadership, competitiveness, and the drive to be the best,” Alouettes G.M. Jim Popp said in a team-issued statement Monday. “We feel that by tapping into Jeff’s knowledge, he will be another key addition in getting our season turned around.”

Garcia is listed as an “offensive consultant” on the club’s website.

The Alouettes are 1-4 and are averaging a league-worst 15 points per contest. They have been held to five points in each of last two games, with quarterbacks Troy Smith and Tanner Marsh combining to complete 22-of-59 passes for 185 yards and two interceptions.

Alouettes head coach Tom Higgins said the club will take the “next few days” to “evaluate all of our coaches and establish what their exact roles will be.”

The 44-year-old Garcia was last on an NFL roster in 2011 with the Texans. And it is here we pause to mention, as a matter of record, that Garcia purportedly reached out to the Browns for a tryout last year.

Hmmm.

  1. Great quarterback. Would have made even more Pro Bowls if it wasn’t for that whiner T.O. They had a great team in San Francicso that was broken up because nothing was ever good enough for that guy. He obviously wasn’t Steve Young but he had All-Star talent nonetheless. Too bad his team didn’t believe in him and made him a journeyman.

  2. Jeff Garcia was ten years ahead of his time. Every time I see Russell Wilson, I’m reminded of Garcia’s game. Being married to a former playmate of the year doesn’t hurt either.

  3. Well their QB is completing less than 50% of his passes, so that’s clearly a problem. At least they didn’t wait until the season was over to find out what Jeff Garcia thinks, hopefully he can help them figure out what to do!

  4. After witnessing that pathetic offensive performance under Troy Smith and Alex Brink against the Argonauts, they had to do something. Go Argos!!!

  5. Jeff was a very good QB. I would hire him just to have his gorgeous wife show up to at the stadium once in a while.

  6. Media reports out of Montreal say he is willing to come out of retirement to play.

  7. Well, it’s better than to see him on NFL Network. He’s a good guy, but I never thought he was broadcast material.

I wonder if ex-Jeff Garcia students Mark Sanchez and Jamarcus Russell would join him.

  8. What the Als need to do is talk a former two-time Heisman Trophy winner that they have on their neg. list out of his retirement. You know, the one who gets down on one knee and puts his hand on his forehead every time he throws a TD pass.
