Lions sign veteran cornerback Drayton Florence

The Lions have added some veteran depth at a position where they desperately need it.

Drayton Florence, a cornerback who has played 11 NFL seasons, signed with Detroit today.

This is Florence’s second stint in Detroit, having previously played there in 2012. Last year he played in Carolina, appearing in 14 games and starting five for the Panthers. Florence has also played for the Bills, Jaguars and Chargers. Florence had previously worked out for the Titans and Ravens this offseason.

The 33-year-old Florence joins a group of backup cornerbacks in Detroit that also includes Cassius Vaughn, Jonte Green, Chris Greenwood and Bill Bentley. Darius Slay and Rashean Mathis are the Lions’ starters at cornerback.

  1. Being a Vikings fan, I have wondered every year if Detroit was going to get things running on all cylinders. there is a lot of talent on this team. It looks like the corners could be the Achilles heel this year.

  2. Mayhew is smarter then all of us. The Lions don’t need talent at CB. Look at all of the success we’ve had with that formula.

  3. I used to think the Vikings had the worse secondary in the NFL, at least that what the stats show. The Lions will give them a run for their money in 2014 with the only difference being the Vikings faced 3 top QB’s in the NFC North twice a year (6 games) while the Lions get a break because Stafford gets to go up against the Vikings secondary.

  4. Listen….I’m so tired if everyone always saying “they need to work on their corners”..Mayhew has drafted a corner EVERY year since 2010..eventually you have to see what your development is doing. And this is the year…2-3 years is when you see a corner start getting it. Slay is on the right path, Bentley is already solid. We’ve added some key veterans. I mean Jesus Christ, seems like people will only be pleased when we use a draft and take 7 corners then sign the #1 DB on the free agent market every summer.
Every other team develops players, let the lions do the same. It takes time, and yes it takes games where we get our *** beat lol but eventually, you have to see what you have in previous draft picks, which is what’s happening now.

  5. People who say the Lions have no corners don’t really know anything about the Lions. They have some talented young players in the secondary. Watch out for Darius Slay this season. He’s gonna be much improved this year

  6. Flo rider played his tail off in Carolina last year surprised the Panthers didn’t bring him back.

  7. Nice, thought he played pretty well in 2012 before the injury..hope he hasn’t lost to much of a step.

  8. I know Florence is old but it’s weird no one gave him a look after a successful 2013. The Lions need another vet back there and this could be a good fit. I like having him in camp.

  9. Everyone keeps talking about how bad the Lions corners are, but I think they are better than they can’t be any worse than they were last season… With Jason Jones healthy, Devin Taylor with a season under his belt, and Kyle Van Noy being a pretty good rush linebacker, QBs shouldn’t have as much time in the pocket as seasons past. These corners will make or break their season though, so getting a vet like Florence could be a nice boost to the group.
