Tom Brady to sit, Ryan Mallett to start tonight

Mallett

Tom Brady got some good work in joint practices with Washington this week.

So they’re not going to bother with any more tonight.

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Brady will sit and Ryan Mallett will start tonight’s game for the Patriots.

Tom Brady has paid his dues this week.

Brady has sat out three preseason openers before (2005, 2008 and 2011), so it’s not a new thing. And he completed 60-of-80 passes in the joint workouts this week, so he’s obviously feeling sharp.

If anything, it gives the Patriots a chance to polish up Mallett for a potential trade, since they drafted Jimmy Garoppolo this spring, and Mallett’s in the final year of his rookie deal.

But playing well would be the first step in that process, and it starts tonight.
