Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu was hoping to be back for the opener.

But even if the Cardinals don’t always share his optimism, Mathieu said he’s getting closer to coming back from last year’s torn ACL.

I expect to be at practice the next two to three weeks,” Mathieu said, via Darren Urban of the team’s official website. “Hopefully we can stick to that timetable.”

Asked if coach Bruce Arians was on board with that timetable, Mathieu said: “I shared it with him. I don’t think he takes me too seriously.”

Mathieu remains on the physically unable to perform list, and it’s unclear if the Cardinals want to move him off there or shelve him for the first six weeks of the season.

Mathieu said he wants to prove himself ready to contribute, and the Cardinals might be willing to wait for a full-speed Honey Badger.
