Nick Foles matches his 2013 interception total in less than a quarter

AP

Last year, Eagles quarterback Nick Foles threw 317 passes.  Two were intercepted.

This year, Foles has thrown nine passes.  Two have been intercepted by the Bears.  One was snagged by safety Ryan Mundy, and the other pick came from cornerback Sherrick McManis in the first quarter of Friday night’s game at Chicago.

Yes, it’s the preseason.  No, it doesn’t count.  But it’s an eyebrow-raiser for a guy who protected the ball so well a season ago.

Last year, Foles threw one pick in 42 preseason attempts.  As a rookie, he threw two in 63 preseason attempts and five in 265 regular-season throws.

The second interception also was Foles’ final throw of the night.  Mark Sanchez is now in the game.  The over/under on a butt fumble is 0.5.

  1. If it happens in a regular season game then I will get worried. I learned a long time ago not to pay much attention to pre-season results. They mean nothing once the real season starts. Just ask the Redskins, the perennial pre-season champs.

  2. Everyone needs to remain calm. Right now is the perfect time for Foles to work through adversity. This is game experience without any consequences. Knowing Chip, I’m not worried in the least. I would rather Foles make all his mistakes now so that he and Chip can correct them before the games count. On a side note, the defense looks pretty good. I have no doubt in Chop or Foles, the Eagles should handily win the division once again this season. Fly Eagles ICWT

  3. Sanchez looks sharp. Foles is a one year wonder.

Mark never had weapons or an offensive coordinator of this caliber. This will be the biggest preseason story and opening day shocker.

  4. The Bears D looked really good, hope that’s good sign. Eagles committed a penalty almost every play against the starting Bears defense looked promising like they couldn’t stop them and forced 2 INT from Foles.

Cutler looked good. Foles not so good. Now we know why the Bears are ranked higher than the Eagles on PFT, so there you go….

    GO BEARS!!!!

  5. I think Foles is way too mentally-sound and intelligent to allow this to get to him too much, but the fact of the matter is that there is a whole lotta pressure mounted upon the shoulders of Nick Foles to replicate the statistical production he displayed last season. Throwing a couple INTs the first preseason game wouldn’t be worthy of a news story for anyone, unless of course you set an NFL record for TD:INT ratio in your very first season as a starter.

*The thing about Nick Foles is that even if he had gone almost perfect and threw a couple TDs in tonight’s game…Foles has consistently shown that he is never complacent and never satisfied with how he plays…hes always striving to improve. He’s tall, has great QB vision, can make all the throws(very catchable ball) all over the field, but it’s his cerebral abilities and mental toughness that sets him apart, and he sets a fine example for the rest of the guys playing alongside of him.

Toughness is not something that comes to mind when you simply look at Nick Foles, but it is something he has a lot of for sure. It’s the same thing with Eli Manning, another tall QB with a decently thick build, but truly…who in their right mind would look at Eli and think: “Man, that guy looks tough.” BUT, Eli…and Foles for that matter, are both way tougher than they look.

  6. Gonna be a loooong year eagles fans. Foles will crash back to earth now that there is a full year of tape on him and Kelly’s offense. Good luck finishing .500

  7. Everything went right in the Cinderella year last year because the Redskins were torn apart by Mike Shanahan. Now the Eagles are facing a Nightmare season where everything seems to go wrong. and they WILL miss Desean Jackson.

  8. Even though he wasn’t a rookie last season, this can be considered a softmore slump season (I hope :p )

  9. Hmmm it’s the preseason so maybe Foles was throwing passes that he may not try to throw during a meaningful game. Obviously he’s going to throw more than two int’s this year. Chill out nerd.

  10. I hope folks didn’t expect him to throw less than 10 ints this year. This is the preseason better now than when they count and I hate the eagles but I am also a realist!! HTTR!!!

  11. The Bears clearly were the more organized and prepared team, speaking about the starters. The eagles couldn’t stop the bears without getting a penalty. It was great to see Chip Kelly upset on the sideline, welcome to NFL chip….hope you enjoyed last season cuz it’s over, lol

  12. As an Eagles fan, I must say Foles didn’t look very good. In fact, the whole offense was off. The ridiculous penalties didn’t help, of course. Still very optimistic, but I can’t imagine Kelly is pleased. I do think part of it is that they really aren’t running their real offense. Looks a lot like preseason last year. We know the difference between that and week 1.

He was looking for DJAX to throw too

    ——————————————————–
Weird cause Redskins QB’s are looking for him too. Oh wait he’s hurt.

  14. Let’s be honest here. First Int was not his fault, as his arm or the ball was hit right as it left his hand. The second interception was the result of a younger WR running the wrong route and bringing his defender into the path of the pass that was for another receiver. You so need to get over yourselves. And to those who said first string D was walked on didn’t watch the game. The Bears offense can be top 3 and it took them 13 plays and 3 Eagles penalties to score only 1 touchdown! In period of my Eagles tonight. Second string D line was BEAST.

  15. Sanchez looked good, Clausen looked good, Props to Lynch and Fales with an 8 minute drive at the end (wtg rooks!) Matthews and Palmer looked terrible. Foles picks were no reason to be alarmed, eagles fans. Think theyre gonna score a million, without desean.

  16. Gotta give Sanchez credit… He was wrong again. Philly fans arent better than NY fans, theyre much worse. Foles comes out in a preseason scrimmage and isnt sharp. These games dont count. Sanchez comes out and looks like Foles, but against a weak teams second unit. Anyone who would judge this team based on their first preseason game is nuts.

Sanchez against first team defenses is the worst QB in the last four years and fourth wirst in NFL history. Foles set records against thise teams last year. He will settle in, and if, God forbid, Sanchez plays when it matters, after the first hit, he’s done.

I always knew why Philly sucks… You fans have zero patience or understanding of your teams or sports. But, thank you for taking two of NY’s biggest busts off our hands so we can watch them hand us games… sanchez and del zotto. Enjoy them. Really. Id give you Manning, Vick and Smith for Foles right now. You have a great one coming there. Jesus, complain when the games matter.

  17. An eagles apologist above said if I know chip the way I do lol you got him on speed dial or nah? Lot of hype for a coach that got out coached big time in the playoffs

  18. Foles Regression + no more “throw And hope” Foles luck like last year+ no DJax + Chip Kelly arrogance + second worst defense in the league behind Dallas = last year was a fluke! 3rd place in the NFC East…and STILL, no SB trophy.

  19. Hey Laguhernyc! Dude, you sound like one of the largest whining nincompoops that has ever posted on the site. You must be a legend in your own mind, Foles smoke and mirrors have been revealed from the tale of the tape!

  20. Foles throws an unusually high trajectory on his long passes. I have counted umpteen times when a DB was in perfect position to pick him off then mis-timed his jump and watched the receiver pull it down. Maybe the league has some tape and is practicing to intercept his jump ball throws. I predict 2 interceptions per game for 2014, or 32 interceptions.

  21. This year, Foles has thrown nine passes. Two have been intercepted by the Bears.

Yes, but these were done at a very high rate of speed. They purposely threw those so that they could get to the next paragraph in the game plan. Obviously.

    ….

Very fast. That’s the goal. More plays. Positive. Negative. Does NOT matter.

As long as they have more plays: WINNER!

  22. Damn! Can’t believe how bad he looked! Oh well 15 more games to go! Oh wait… This was only the pre season… I forgot Reno Maehe looked good in the pre season -_- get over yourselves.

  23. Remember when Kaepernick started midseason & Jaws proclaimed he could be the best qb ever? Scouting reports make a big difference. Kap sucks & so does Jaws. Worst analyst ever. Btw, I’m not trying to slam on Foles just to be clear. I’m not trolling.

  24. Weird cause Redskins QB’s are looking for him too. Oh wait he’s hurt.

It was just a minor injury. Gruden did the smart thing and sat him the first preseason game. Who does the Philidelphia football team have at WR?

  25. While I hate to agree with Giants fans about much, the guy above me is RIGHT. It IS pre season folks. That said, I DO HOPE JJ can find a way to trade Hanie to some team in NEED of a QB (or a backup … like the Niners) for a second string safety ( second string would be good enough to play first string for us right now!)

orivar says: It’s just pre season but a year with a year of film means a lot.

Teams don’t study a bunch of opponents’ film in the preseason
    ****************************************
So, are you saying that teams don’t break down film of their opponents during the offseason?

That is the belief of a desperate fan.

Believe me. Dallas, the Giants and the REDSKINS have all broken down the Eagles offense from every game last season. And, on the flip side, Chip Kelly has developed new wrinkles in his offense to counter what teams will try to use to stop him. He is way too smart as a coach to not do that. But, don’t think for a second that teams haven’t picked this offense apart on film already.

  27. Or, you could credit the Bears D. Chicago’s D-Line is much improved, and they now have some DBs who know who to play the ball in the air.

On the downside, the Bears LBs are still very questionable, especially in pass coverage. And their special teams are unbelievably bad… to the point it will cost them games this season if they don’t improve a lot in the next 3 weeks. So far in his tenure as STs coach, deCamillias has not impressed me at all and appears to be the weakest link in an otherwise pretty solid coaching staff.

You mean like Dream Team and Dynasty?
Egirls always flap there wings and no superbowl.
    Here you go again…prime example.

  29. “But it’s an eyebrow-raiser for a guy who protected the ball so well a season ago.”

Can always count on insightful comments on PFT.

  30. It’s a preseason game your all morons for even looking into any of this. Pulsing you knew football at all his arm was hit on the first pick and the second pick a WR RAN THE WRONG DAM ROUTE.

  31. How many times did LeSean McCoy carry the ball? The Eagles is a run 1st team. Everyone and their mama knows this. What the Eagles were doing in their first preseason game is exactly what Bellichek does in his preseason games. Work on plays not game plans. Look at the preseason history of team who go deep in the preseason. They are usually on the losing end in the preseason. It’s because they are working on plays that need polishing in games and practice. Why do you think McCoy didn’t really run? Because they know LeSean is money in the bank. Why practice that? What I saw wasn’t even a game plan. It was an audition. From that game I do know this: Nate Allen should have been signed long term. He’s going to be the ballhawk he should have always been.

  32. I get a kick out of the “most efficient TD-INT ratio in NFL History”. Shouldn’t that be reserved for a QB that did it for atleast 75-80% of the season??LOL

How many times have we seen a QB have a great run?

Case in point, I remember when David Garrard went through 14 GAMES without a INT? Wouldn’t his success over 14 games Trump Foles accomplishments in 10 games?

IJS, sometimes I feel like todays media “creates stats” that aren’t even realistic just to have another story….

  33. it didn’t take long…the genius of Chip Kelly…fake the hand-off in the spread, look for your first read at WR or dump it off to McCoy on the delayed screen…or throw to the other team.

55-11 last year was easy when the Bears had the worst run D in the history of the cornerstone franchise.

  34. Its preseason. Look at the scores around the league. Im not an eagles or bears fan but obviously the eagles are better. Stop with this nonsense in the preseason. Jeffries is good for the bears. Cutler is pretty awful. Havent seen enough fokes.

  35. Anyone who watches the first preseason game of the year and then spouts off about a player being a bust is just plain stupid, and that person knows nothing about football. LeSean McCoy got one rep the whole night, that does not really open things up… Sanchez set up two TD drives. Huff goes 102 yards for a TD, by all of your Foles logic, the Bears special teams this year is a bust… Matt Forte had 3 carries for -5 yards…. Is that guy a bust too?

  36. Eagles winning the NFC East last year was a total fluke, and one of the luckiest stretches I’ve seen since the Giants in 2007. Did the Eagles go 10-6? Yes they did. Let’s revisit that. Let’s start at November 10th, where the Eagles and their last ranked pass defense defeated the Packers in Lambeau 6 days after Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone with Seneca Wallace. Then the Cardinals game where a crushing Foles interception was called back on a phantom penalty and the Eagles squeak that one out. Then let’s go to the Detroit game where they lucked out and faced Calvin Johnson in a blizzard where the Lions couldn’t exploit the Eagles bottom ranked pass defense. Then they play the Vikings without AP who was injured and lose that one. Then of course winning by an eyelash against Kyle Orton in week 17 in the finals 2 minutes. Without a boatload of lucky breaks Chip Kelly and the Eagles are 6-10. Aaron Rodgers carves them up, Calvin Johnson and Stafford carve them up without a blizzard, the Cowboys win week 17 without Kyle Orton. They weren’t/aren’t as good as you make them out to be, or the media makes them out to be. They had a hell of a string of luck down the stretch.

  37. Nothing matters in preseason, except how your back-ups play. Remember the preseason is just practice for the real season. Although I think Foles and the eagirls will regress this year.

  38. Foles made bonehead decisions and threw some picks in last year’s preseason which cost him the job against Vick.

Remember, it’s the preseason. Let’s see what happens against the Jags in Week 1.
