Hoyer indeed gets the start on Monday night

Johnny Manziel will start the Browns’ second preseason game, against Washington.  Unless he doesn’t.

NFL Media had both sides covered, via a weekend report that Manziel would start and a more recent report from Ian Rapoport that Manziel wouldn’t.  Coach Mike Pettine has now announced that, indeed, Brian Hoyer will get the start.

“It’s just something right now where we are comfortable with Brian going out there to start the game,” Pettine said.  “I think it’s a little overblown as to who the starter is going to be.  The key component, as I’ve stated earlier this week, is that we are going to balance the reps. We will play it a little by ear as it goes on, we haven’t truly decided as far as the rotation but the goal is, for when we look at the stat sheet at halftime, that they both have the same amount of repetitions and hopefully they both get a good amount of work.”

Even if Pettine thinks it’s overblown, the Browns realize that people want to know.  So they issued a one-issue press release regarding the move.

The more important press release will come after Monday night’s game.  Pettine is expected to announce the Week One starter at some point before the third preseason game.

We’ll get ahead of the curve by reporting that it will be Manziel.  And that it will be Hoyer.

  1. I love that Pettine killed the Manziel vs RG3 hype we would have been barraged with over the weekend.

  2. I don’t think this is fair to Manziel. He needs the opportunity to come out of the tunnel a starter and play with the ones. The mentality is much different coming off the bench, especially if any of the ones come out when he goes in.

  3. Another quarterback “competition” in Cleveland!

Clearly Brandon Weeden wasn’t just given the job last year, he totally earned it. And this years “competition” was clearly fair as well, with Hoyer getting the vast majority of first team snaps in camp and starting both preseason games.

If Hoyer is more ready to play that’s perfectly fine with me. But let’s stop calling these QB competitions. They are always tilted.

  4. If they’re going to trade Hoyer in the end, then I guess he’s probably glad of the attention. Otherwise, he’s probably wishing he was just Brian Hoyer of the Browns which would go pretty much unnoticed.

  5. NFL Network has already posted an update stating the Mike Pettines sources are wrong and that Manziel will indeed start.

Also ESPN has announced that the Monday Night Pre show has been expanded to include pre-empting the entire first quarter of Mondays game for a special called “Countdown to Johnny Football”.

  6. Pettine made a mistake by saying he’ll name the starter before preseason week three. Kind of painted himself in a corner, IMO. Manziel needs more time, Hoyer is good enough to give them that time. The starter will be Hoyer and the Browns will win more games than they lose.

  7. The NFL Network is OBSSESSED with this guy. If I have to listen to the chick ask Shawne Merriman one more time who he thinks should be the starter this year I might puke.

  8. see, what you don’t want is Manziel to fall on his face and fans to call for Hoyer. their best move is to start Hoyer, he doesn’t light it up, and the fans will be calling for Manziel. its the best move they can make. QB’s crumble under that pressure all the time.

  9. I saw the game last week on TV. I noted how petite, and small….yet homely the Browns Cheerleaders are. Then I looked closer and noted it was actually JFF running onto the field to relieve Hoyer. Wow…what a shocker.

  10. First of all let’s address rock head Pettine’s comments. “It really doesn’t matter who starts the game” really? Yeah every player aspires to be on the bench to start the game. This guy is a moron.

Second don’t say Johnny is gonna start the 2nd pre-season game if you have no intention from the outset to start him.

Stupid comment #2: Pettine : “we are going to give them equal reps with the ones” and what are you going to do count to 10 plays then switch to Johnny.

With how dumb this moron is its no wonder the Browns passed on Sammy Watkins even though they have no WRs worth a damn.

If I was Haslem, I’d go Haslem and fire Pettine before the opener.

If they are hellbent on starting Hoyer which it seems they are, when they start 1-6, they better start Manziel vs the Raiders in game 8.

  11. I would like to see Hoyer start the season against Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and Baltimore. After the 0 – 3 start then give Manziel a chance.

  12. I know you other Browns fans like only positive comments about the Browns, the new video screens and new scoreboards for other games look awesome.

Bout time they fixed that Stadium. Heard also they fixed the horrible sound system too.

  13. Lol all the johnny manziel lovers on here sound so stupid. Why would you want a rookie that still hasent proven anything to start the season vs Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Baltimore. That’s 0 and 3 for the cleveland browns. Brian hoyer needs to start for this team even though there still gonna suck with him to lol

  14. Browns have a week 4 Bye. They will start Hoyer for the first 3 games & bring Johnny along slowly. If Hoyer is playing great, he keeps the starting role. If Hoyer starts the first 3 games 0-3, well it gave Manziel time…..It’s Johnny starting week 5.

We’re talking about the preseason. Does it really matters who starts the 2nd preseason game? No. You’re the moron.

    >>>>>Second don’t say Johnny is gonna start the 2nd pre-season game if you have no intention from the outset to start him.

Would you mind telling us when/where Pettine ever said Manziel was going to start the second preseason game? We’ll be waiting… forever.

    >>>>>Stupid comment #2: Pettine : “we are going to give them equal reps with the ones” and what are you going to do count to 10 plays then switch to Johnny.

Coach determines 1st string will play for a quarter. A quarter is 15 minutes. After around 7 to 8 minutes of playing, Petting switches out Hoyer for Manziel. Get it now?

    >>>>>If I was Haslem, I’d go Haslem and fire Pettine before the opener.

Well, there’s something you don’t need to worry about. You’ll never be Haslam. You know why? Because you’re the type who reads a name in print 8 million times, but is still clueless on how to even spell it right. Goes to show that you don’t have a mind for details or accuracy. Which both goes to show that you’ll never be a CEO and explains the mind-numbing stupidity of your post.

  16. Let’s all be honest here if josh Gordon gets suspended, the offense is gonna suck anyway. But there defense is gonna be strong this year I think.

  17. @td40:

Pettine said Manziel was going to be the Game 2 starter in pre-season 2 weeks ago MORON.

Pre-season: Yeah makes so much sense to not start Manziel in pre-season but start him in Pittsburgh? Lol. Here’s a $1 buy a clue MORON

  18. Does it matter?

Hoyer had a drive ending beautiful deep out dropped at the 9 by Austin, and had anther drive ending pass dropped inside the 5 by Gray

As long as the Browns lead the league in drops no QB will excel.

  19. ESPN is gonna start broadcasting kickoff time changed to 9 pm when Johnny takes the field. Trust me no one wants to see Hoyer, a journeyman lifelong backup that couldn’t even beat out John Skelton lol. Yeah he’s good.

  20. Pettine and Farmer screwed this year up by not taking Watkins at 4.

2-14 in 2014. They only have a chance to beat Houston and Oakland at home. The rest they will get rolled.

  21. @ brownsmakemecrazy are those scores you predicted with hoyer or johnny manziel at qb? And let me ask you a question how many games do you think the browns will win this year if johnny starts?

  22. @dave90sbaby95:

Scores are w Hoyer starting. Yes Pettine did say Johnny would start week 2, why do you think Florio said what he said in the first line of the article.

With Johnny at starting QB, they could get to 5-11 6-10. Gives them a running dimension Hoyer doesnt have, and is much needed given the fact that Pettine and Farmer neglected the WR position in the draft because they are morons.

2-14 prediction is with Hoyer starting all 16 games.
