Schaub struggles but expresses confidence in Raiders’ offense

Raiders quarterback Matt Schaub has had a rough preseason, and it didn’t get much better on Friday night in Green Bay.

Schaub threw for just 110 yards, completing 13 of 27 passes, and he acknowledged afterward that the Raiders’ offense still has work to do.

“We better be close to getting ready for the regular season, obviously,” Schaub said. “We got off to a good start, which is what we wanted to do — that was our plan. Then we sort of stubbed our toe.”

That “good start” Schaub references was a 40-yard touchdown run by Maurice Jones-Drew on Oakland’s first drive. That was a good play by Jones-Drew, and it was about the only good play the Raiders’ first-string offense made: Oakland went three-and-out on its next five drives, and Schaub lost a fumble on the drive after that.

Still, Schaub expressed some confidence.

“We just didn’t execute — we need to be better than that,” Schaub said. “We had a good plan, we were in position to make plays, we just didn’t finish.”

Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr, who suffered both a concussion and a rib injury in the Raiders’ last preseason game, sat out last night. But backup Matt McGloin came in late in the game and gave the Raiders’ offense a spark, throwing two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. So far in the preseason, McGloin has looked better than Schaub, who may need to worry about losing his starting job to one of the young quarterbacks behind him on the depth chart.

  1. Schaub did well for a couple years with a very good offensive line and a tightly controlled Kubiak offense. He will struggle without that….

  2. 2-14 this team stinks from top to bottom.Im convinced Mark Davis is intentionally sabotaging this team so the convict fans in Oakland will stay away and this will be able to justify him moving to LA San Antonio or whichever stupid city wants these losers.

  3. Die hard Raider fan here. Schaub is washed up, Carr and McGloin both give the Raiders a better chance to win. And I was a huge fan of the Schaub trade. Thought he just needed a change of scenery. Definitely wrong.

  4. Schaub peaked about 2 years ago and is now RACING down the other side of the mountain. I was all in with this guy being the bridge between the current and future but he’s pretty much useless. Everyone wants to blame the o-line…show me one play that was unlike what Rodgers was facing. Just one. Rodgers manipulates the pocket, stands in the face of the rush and makes the throws needed. If a rusher even breaks from his block Schaub is on his back foot like he’s an inch from getting killed, he’s staring down recievers, throwing to his first option no matter what and simply looks like he doesn’t care.

I thought that he at least wouldn’t be the reason we lost games. I do not believe that any longer. Our D gave him and the offense the ball in prime position 5 TIMES and each time he came out and looked scared and useless. Even the almost TD to Jones took all day to get there and would never have worked against anything better than a #4 CB.

I really hope he proves me wrong but he looks done. Completely done.

  5. No arm strength.

McGloin plays great against guys who will be working at Kroger next week, but against the big boys, please see last year’s performance.

    Team will struggle again, unfortunately.

  6. McGloin and Carr both look better than Schaub.

Sometimes you need to cut your losses and move on for the better of the team (opposed to saving face and sacrificing W’s).

Start McGloin, let the kid take over mid-season if he isn’t on fire.

  7. Good lord Schaub is bad. Can’t move at all, missing on easy throws to open receivers… a top 5 pick for the Raiders again next year looks like a lock.

  8. Haha, the amount of Raider fans that are predicting the playoffs are declining every week. We haven’t even reached the regular season yet. When will you clowns learn? Wait until your team starts winning before you open your loud mouths. 4-12. At best.

Schaub is struggling ? Did anyone expect him to get any better in on a Raiders’ team with that offense ?
Raider fan sure did (as usual). Until they saw him on the field (as usual).

  10. Yes, let’s take a peak at last year.

McGloin beat out a 4th round pick to make the roster, then got thrown into the fire at the end of the season as an UDFA in the NFL and went 1-5 with 55% completion rate, 8 td’s, 8 int’s and 1,547 yards at a rate of 250+ a game. 4 int’s came in 1 game.

Is he a world beater? No. But he’s a fine bridge to Carr. At least he wants it. Hell, 2nd year player Kirk Cousins threw 7 int’s over only 3 starts last year. What McGloin has done is impressive considering he was pegged a camp arm coming into last year.

  11. Yes it’s preseason and nobody wants to get hurt, but from my vantage point (watching at home listening to Jim and Phil), it was another tentative Schaub. He was inaccurate on several easy throws, passes that half the fans watching could make. I realize he’s feeling the rush and learning the OL strengths and weaknesses, but to be that inaccurate seems to indicate he has either a mental block and has lost confidence or he’s purposefully throwing the ball where a receiver could grab it.

McGloin looked good again against the 2nd/3rd teams. He’s not great, but he seems to actually try and wills the offense down the field. He is better than Schaub (as he was last November when he beat Schaub and the Texans). We will see how Carr and McGloin look against Seattle next week. Now if the Raiders can find a FB who can catch the damn ball. Carr to start by game 5.

McGloin will be a starter somewhere. All he does is throw touchdowns

Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true.

    1 plus 1 equals 3. See?

    Last year…

McGloin tossed a TD on 3.8% of his passes, pedestrian.

McGloin tossed an INT on 3.8% of his passes, not good.

  13. Biased reporting? Aaron Rodgers was sub .500 completion rate also (9-20)
Both teams came out and scored in their first series, and both teams had back to back 3 & outs in the first quarter also.
    And I know – scoreboard!

  14. If I were Mark Davis I would sell the team to someone who understands the game and has deep pockets. I would rebuild the organization and move the team to a single market large city. Right now, they stick worst than a nightmare.

Packer fans bragging about a pre-season game LOL

I didn’t see that anywhere. I think Packers and Raiders get along, they have some ties. The Raiders had some ups and downs. This season will be tough because they have a really tough schedule, and are just now able to get back into draft picks and free agency competition. Reggie Mac inherited college’s equivalent of the Death Penalty. By the end of next season, the Raiders will be competing again.

  16. All Schaub does is dink and dunk and hes not even good at that, anytime carr or matt McGloin come in the offense looks way better, we need to give our defense a break, 5 straight 3& outs followed by a fumble..come on Raiders!

  17. All the AFC West teams can now count on 2 wins in the division against the San…Oakland raiders. Hurry up and move and find a new city to embarrass.

  18. There is a strong likelihood that the Raiders could very well finish with a worse record than last year. Just an abysmal franchise. The only team with less of an ability to draft quality passers is KC.

There isn’t a single argument to be made, that the team shouldn’t be sold to a competent group, which would be able to inject new blood and capital into that carcass. And, of course, move them to a more affluent city.

  19. Schaub has one of the slowest releases in football… Add in zero mobility, weak arm and in accuracy , and being unsure and scared?? Garbage… Bring in the youngsters…

  20. Well they actually had a QB 2 years ago with Palmer but traded him for nothing … bad mistake Reggie.

  21. Yet another QB named Matt they paid too much money to acquire. Matt McGloin is much better than Schaub and has that swagger to go with it. Start the kid named Matt you don’t believe in DA & RM, everyone but you two can see he is better and drives that weak offense down field and scores.

It’s ridiculous fans can see what these two can’t.

Looks like another long same ol’ season again.

    – A Raiders Fan

  22. Isn’t Shaub really only effective when the play action is rocking and Rollin. Let’s pump the brakes RaiderNation and see what he does in at least the first game that counts. You know when MJD and DMAC get more than a combined 6 carries. Shauby hadn’t been good I get it but he’s also been facing defenses who know he’s throwing. Oh and the receivers haven’t got much separation.

  23. Amazing Reggie McKenzie is still collecting a paycheck after creating one of the worst teams in the history of the Raiders.
A complete failure with drafts , signings and coaches brought in by McKenzie.

  24. If he’s not careful, Mcgloin gonna take his job, you can really see how far mcgloin has come along, im not here to talk down on our players, im here to talk em up, if youre here with negativity, exit stage left.

  25. No, Schaub did not look good last night.
However, the Raider receiver corps should be collectively named “Clifford Franklin”.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen that many bad drops in a game.

  26. Incidentally, I’m still having trouble processing the idea of Maurice Jones-Drew playing for Oakland.

  27. Shaub is terrible. The defense is horrendous. Watching Eddie Lacy out-slow everyone on the field and still pick up 10-15 yards was downright embarrassing. This team really feels like they are destined for the first pick in next year’s draft.

  28. Shaub wasnt the problem last night.. Receivers couldnt separate, marcel dropped a for sure td.. They took the jones one back, o line didnt hold up as well as it couldve and penalties.. Def penalties stunk up the place keeping drives alive.. U cant win if u cant get off the field on def.. So while alot of people are expecting this magical performance by shaub they arent seeing what happen completely.. Oh and the drops.. Too many drops..i dont see him as the problem.. But he may just not be the complete answer

  29. Let’s say this altogether, preseason is PRACTICE! Eli Manning is struggling, are they looking to bench him? Let’s see what happens after a few games before we get the lynch mob. Also, I would love to hear from all these Raider haters what teams they root for. Probably have nothing good to say about their teams that’s why there here. And you know why? Because deep down they LOVE THE RAIDERS! 47 years and counting, GO RAIDERS!

  30. At one point Schaub threw 2 (would-be) TD passes in a row that were dropped. It wasn’t all his fault last night. But you do have to love McGloin…he’s a gamer.

  31. Im a Raider for Life we need to get Carr In there, He is our Future, I liked Mcgloin last year as well it seems that Schaub needs to be our #3.

Biased reporting? Aaron Rodgers was sub .500 completion rate also (9-20)
A few missed throws to Halfbacks – a few dropped passes – that offense still ran like 80 plays in the first half.

  33. It’s time we stop Ignoring the Receiving Core , Draft some Big hitters, Moore is Good, and Streeter I like but everyone else… I hope we get A WR in the draft next year But Khalil Mack wAS A good Pick

  34. I was amazed that the Raiders or anyone brought this guy in. He is done. Only thing to do now is move on…and to think they got rid of Carlson Palmer…defys logic.

  35. Let’s say that Matt is washed up as a #1(still don’t think so) but he’s still a great #2 for just a 6th round pick..don’t give up on him yet.

  36. Schaub, single handedly, dismantled the Houston team last year and Oakland is headed in that direction. NO! it’s never the fault of one guy but there is one guy who’s lap it all falls in and that is the non coach Dennis Allen. I know I’m right when I say Reggie made his first and biggest mistake when he fired Jackson and hired Allen and his second biggest was getting Schaub. The players on Oakland aren’t bad it’s how the coach assesses them and uses them. A good coach makes wise decisions when he hires his assistants, Allen didn’t. Now is the time, why wait thru the year, fire the GM and Coach NOW!and get some football guys in there. The fans will be there with the owner, win or lose just because he tried to do something. To sit back and let the bad happen again is ludicrous.

  37. The biggest thing a QB needs is accuracy.

McGloin is more accurate passing than Schaub.
McGloin also showed some fire and leadership far beyond his experience.

All the other stuff that goes with being a QB can be coached and learned.

Who is going to sign Schaub if he is cut? If you need him later on he can be signed or sign him for week 2 so his salary is not guaranteed.

McGloin will be signed by another team if cut.

The Oakland QB problem is working itself out to be obvious to all.

  38. Hey chaffee, Al made the first mistake firing Cable and hiring Jackson. Jackson had to go because he thought he was the next coming, not to mention that Palmer trade still hurts. Jackson was a disaster, and maniacal. No 1st or 2nd round pick in 2012, coming off no 1st rounder in 2011. Yeah he had to go. And purging a lot of the bloated salaries the last two years wasn’t Allen’s or McKenzie’s fault, they had to clean up the mess. Just purge, baby!

The autumn wind will be OK come 2015.

  39. As a Raider fan I can honestly say I did not expect this team to be good coming into this year with the leagues most difficult schedule. The Raiders will most likely show improvement over last year in most areas (it would be hard not too), but could still very well finish with the worst record in the league regardless of whom is playing quarterback.

  40. After 13 years of drafted QBs Lamonica/Stabler from 67-79, Raiders found success with a veteran from another squad (Plunkett). They have basically worked the same formula ever since then with only one (Gannon) big success and one guy (Hostettler) that was respectable. Schroeder, George, Collins, Culpepper, Campbell and Palmer all had their best years in other uniforms. Of course, all of the draft QB busts since the 80s almost forced them to keep doing this.

  41. Watching Schaub last night was PAINFUL, why the Oakland Raiders signed him is beyond me. He looked like the biggest problem the Raiders have.
Then there’s Carr and McGloin of which McGloin looks to be more capable of running the Offense; then there is the OFFENSE???
I’m beginning really doubt the “WISDOM” of GM Mr. Reggie McKinsey.
Then there’s Mr. Mark Davis who wants to move the team. Really? Again?
I HAD season tickets going back to 1968 & until they packed up for LA; they ARE RUDDERLESS!

  42. Biased reporting? Aaron Rodgers was sub .500 completion rate also (9-20)
Both teams came out and scored in their first series, and both teams had back to back 3 & outs in the first quarter also.
You can’t possibly be comparing Matt Schaub with Aaron Rodgers. I’m a Raiders fan and I would take Aaron Rodgers in a wheelchair over the quarterbacks they have on their roster.

I know they were in love with Carr throughout the draft process and I hope he pans out, but I have my doubts. Specifically he was destroyed by a USC defense that was playing for their THIRD head coach in the same season. They say he was injured for that game. I can only hope that was the cause for his poor performance.

P.S. If the NY Giants ever decide they wish to go away from the two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, I’ll take him in half a heart beat.

  43. The last thing a QB can be is scared. Seems that Schaub still has an issue with the mental game of QB – we all know he CAN be successful – he’s shown it. We also know he has an arm – he has also shown that. Unfortunately, what he is showing now is that he has a pillow for a head – and this is normally a death sentence for NFL starting QB.

  44. Schaub stinks! This worthless piece of garbage is proof that reggie mckenzie and jerky boy mark davis have no clue about what they’re doing. Looks like reggie is still working for Green Bay, he certainly made sure the Raiders lost to the Packers by picking garbage during the offseason.

While the Raider offense has some new interesting personnel like the running back Jones-Drew the team lacks a decent QB. So far only Matt McGloin has shown us Raider fans any competency at QB. A shame they didn’t pick Manziel when they had the chance, he has the Raider Bad Boy image down perfectly.

Houston We Have a Problem – Schuab!

  45. Mcgloin has been playing the 3rd string the defense , IF he plays against the ones you will see a 3rd string QB . Mcgolin couldnt move the ball at all last yr , Three and out all year with this guy .

  46. Everyone is quick to blame Schaub. Dude is dealing with Elbow Tendonitis and is still finding a way to use a soft touch to give receivers opportunities to make plays. James Jones was victim of a great play by a rookie DB that erased a beautiful TD pass and IDK what the hell Marcel Reece did with his hands. The offense as a whole needs to get better, not just Schaub. James Jones has dropped so many passes. Streater can’t get open to save his life now that Dbs are gameplanning him. D Moore has consistently ran good routes and hasn’t dropped a ball yet, I have faith our offense will gel. Wait for the run game to kick in.. then it will fall into place.
