Chargers announcer suspended for anti-Semitic comment

Hank Bauer, a longtime broadcaster for San Diego Chargers games, has been suspended after making an anti-Semitic comment on the air last week.

After Bauer’s on-air partner Josh Lewin said at the end of last week’s game that he wouldn’t leave a game early if he had paid for the ticket, Bauer made a joke implying that Lewin is cheap because he’s Jewish.

As a result, Bauer is suspended for this week’s preseason finale. The Chargers issued a statement saying it was the broadcaster Clear Channel, not the team, that suspended Bauer.

“Although we know Hank had no ill-will behind his remarks, we agree the comments were inappropriate. Per Clear Channel’s decision, Hank will not be broadcasting Thursday night’s game,” the statement said. “Hank has been a strong radio voice for the Chargers for the past 16 years and a passionate supporter of the team since his playing days. We look forward to Chargers fans receiving the same high-quality broadcast from Josh and Hank when he returns to the booth for the regular season.”

Bauer apologized on Twitter.

“I made a hurtful insinuation that I regret and I would like to express how sorry I am. My poor choice of words were unfortunately open for negative interpretation, please know it was never my intention to offend any of my listeners. I hope you accept my apology,” Bauer wrote.

Bauer was a running back for the Chargers from 1977 to 1982, spent four seasons with the team as an assistant coach and has been broadcasting in San Diego for 27 years.

  1. Yet a player can knock his girlfriend senseless and drag her around a hotel by the hair and only get two weeks, this world is totally screwed up

  2. and if he would have implied he was cheap because he was black the earth would have stopped rotating on its axis and obama and sharpton would have called for a boycot.

  3. I’m glad this as far as antisemitism goes in America, as opposed to Europe where a mob in Paris during a pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel demonstration surrounded a Synagogue calling for a Pogrom.

  4. Its a good thing this TV station didnt hear the late great Robin Williams’ skit on what it would be like in Heaven

they would have crapped themselves in the cloak of political correctness

  5. .
The “word police ” have surplus government equipment too. They’re called lawyers.
    .

  6. Booth guys are on the road with each other and after a while know each other pretty well. A little personal banter at the end of the game makes a broadcast interesting and keeps it light.

They always make fun of the other’s habits, clothes, what they order in the restaurant etc.

    This will be soon forgotten.

  7. We’ve become so thin skinned as a society it is just ridiculous. People need to toughen up and lighten up at the same time.

    ————————–

People can become offended by comments that seem to be insignificant after having to deal with 2000+ years of oppression and millions upon millions being killed because of their faith.

  8. So what? It’s a lame joke and the only apology Bauer should issue is for telling it!

And given the current context in the Middle East, using the term “anti-Semitic” in the title is a tad strong, if not misleading.

Don’t be ridiculous, the joke wasn’t about tipping. 😮

  10. Cry me a river, you crybabies! It’s “Politically Correct” when it offends anyone but a white guy. Give me a break…people are sick of years of taking stuff sitting down and I’m glad for it. And this guy…

When are blacks and other minorities held to the same or any standard?

You really should get out more and stop letting the President have so much power over your life. It’s kinda pathetic…especially on a FOOTBALL site. Waaaaa…blacks and other minorities can say things I can’t. Get a life!

  11. Yea you can argue all you want about freedom of speech rights we have but at the end of the day, hatred and offensive jokes are bad for business and no one wants them on their airwaves even if some people (especially me) find them hilarious. Especially if you are involved with the Chargers. They NEED more fans. Seriously.

  12. “I don’t think he should have apologized or been suspended. It’s a joke and I’m sure the other announcer laughed.”

-I heard the audio. Actually, the play-by-play announcer did not laugh. You could tell he knew his sidekick went too far (at least in today’s far too PC world) and changed the subject quickly.

  13. Bauer and Lewin probably joke like that with each other all the time and neither is offended or needs to run to mama…I mean management.

Unfortunately these days you just can’t do it while on the radio because someone *out there* will call you on it.

  14. People groups we are allowed to caricature include: white men, Catholic priests, blondes, and Republicans. Everyone else is off limits.

    Got it? Good.

  15. Those kind of jokes have always been a stereotype and considered a derogatory comment that has never been acceptable on the air unless your watching a stand up comedian. My question is. When did this Country decide that funny derogatory jokes grown people tell each other in small gatherings become so acceptable to be given free rein by people with big megaphones?

  16. Redskins, ooops. Someone who owns this sight’s thin skin is going to get rattled

  17. Hard to believe the attitudes reflected in these boards. Some shameful and pathetic people really need to grow up. I’m a white guy and yes PC has gone too far and liberals are sometimes silly but honestly check yourselves you’ve all just about gone crazy it looks like.

  18. Hamas is rocketing Jerusalem on a daily basis and the networks are worried about some comment not meant to be harmful. Some of you people are “lost in space”.

  19. During his short suspension, Bauer (with the help of long-time friend Chloe) is planning on foiling multiple planned nuclear attacks initiated by China and Russia. He may also save the President’s life, if he has time.

  20. Really suspended. It’s the spirit on how you say something that counts. It was obvious an attempt at harmless banter. Certainly not said in a hateful way.

  21. I heard the remark, actually a recording of it, and it was inappropriate. I doesn’t matter what spirit it was said, wrong is wrong, in any setting, and what he said was wrong. He is lucky he only got of with a one preseason game suspension.

Just MAYBE…..Because blacks as you say…..DON’T
have a history of lynching, tar and feathering and enslaving and getting rich off of FREE labor. And not to mention….being privy to CENTURIES of affirmative action!!!!

  23. Silly Mr Bauer, everyone knows you can only call out minorities if you’re of the same minority!

  24. The joke was only offensive because of how unoriginal it was. Hank Bauer is such a hack, I love the Chargers and he is brutal to listen to on the air. Trust me, Charger fans deserve a break from this guy for at least humanitarian reasons.
