Derek Carr leads Raiders to four touchdown drives against Seahawks

Derek Carr is making the most of his final preseason opportunity against the Seattle Seahawks.

The rookie quarterback has led the Oakland Raiders to four consecutive touchdown drives to open the game against the Seahawks.

Carr led a 12-play, 68-yard scoring drive to tie the game at 7-7 after Seattle took an early lead. Carr converted a pair of 3rd-and-10 opportunities on the drive before Latavius Murray capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.

Oakland’s special teams then helped set up two more scores.

Keith McGill stripped Seattle kick returner Bryan Walters on the ensuing kickoff  which Oakland managed to recover. It took just one play for Carr to connect with Denarius Moore for a 36-yard touchdown behind former Oakland cornerback Phillip Adams for a touchdown.

After a Seattle three-and-out, T.J. Carrie returned the punt 45 yards into Seattle territory. Again, it took one play for Carr to strike as tight end Mychal Rivera reeled a tipped pass by Malcolm Smith for a 20-yard touchdown.

Another three-and-out by Seattle led to another touchdown by Oakland. Carr marched the Raiders 61 yards on eight plays with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Moore to cap the drive and give the Raiders a 28-7 lead.

Carr’s night was done after the fourth touchdown drive of the game and was replaced by Matt McGloin. Carr finished 11-for-13 for 143 yards and three touchdowns. With Matt Schaub battling a sore elbow, Carr put together a terrific final impression before the start of the regular season that may cause second thoughts as to who should start the season opener against the New York Jets.

  1. You guys good up north? Just checking… Let hope you don’t have too many injuries this year.

  2. Seahawks fan here.
Carr is playing great but if the raiders still elect to start shaub i feel bad for you raider fans.
Carr did well against the starters and has destroyed seattles depth heavy secondary

  3. That’s the third string defense he is destroying. But to Carr’s credit he has a fast release and great accuracy.

Climb out of the cellar and become relevant. 12 years of sucking is ridiculous

  4. He’s looked great even against the ones he went against for the first drive , the Seattle backups are playing terrible these games are prove it games and it seems like many of these bubble guys are taking risks instead of making the plays that are their…

These preseason games have been too easy for the hawks this game just made it 100% sure hawks win in regular season bc how well raiders are playing they won’t look down to them . Poor effort by Seattle not serious at all and getting ran off the field ..

Good for raider nation their a 3-4 win team good for their fans ! And hawks starters better pull their backups aside and rip them this isn’t Seahawks football , even the backups are good players but not showing well or taking Oakland serious is embarrassing !

  5. Carr is straight beast mode tonight. I’m not sure how you don’t start him after this. I mean he was beast against their starting D folks, not 2nd or 3rd stringers.

  6. Schaub shouldn’t even make the 53 man roster. I’d carry a backup longsnapper over that bum.

  7. The second TD to Moore was Aaron Rodgers stuff. 14 years a Raider fan and I dont care if its preseason, I dont remember a Raider QB showing this much talent ever.

Send Schaub back to the bench were he belongs, Carr is the man. Screw the “bring him along slowly, he will be ready after 2-3 years” bullcrap. Kid can play

  8. Pryor sucks. Cut him already. Hawks shafted Oakland with the Flynn pick. In turn we gave a 7th round pick for Pryor. Now wishing we developed a o linemen

  9. Carr had our offense energized. You could hear the Raiders fans feeding off it. WR’s definitely helped him out with some good catches too.

Shaub may be 3rd string after tonight.

  10. Raider nation. Stand up. I shall be in the black hole for the match up against the Texans, I thought it could provide Matt some inspiration but it looks like lil bro will follow in big bros foot steps.

  11. A rookie qb from the raiders made Seasterisk’s starting defense look like chumps lol. Better get used to it since they can’t cheat on defense anymore.

And the second team of Oakland is tearing up the rest of the cheats.

    1 hit wonders.

  12. I hope Dennis Allen is not blind!!!! Because Matt Schaub has Matt Flynn syndrome. It’s called SUCK. There’s no cure for a limp arm!! Freakin bum!!! Well I hope raiders go 9-7 or better with Carr. Trust me raider nation is counting on a miracle!! go raiders!! Just win baby!

  13. Watching the game, there doesn’t seem to be a question as to who should start.
The first drive was against the Seattle first team. Thomas was getting manhandled by Murray.
    Loved watching it.

  14. I think Oakland may have found its QB. If Dennis Allen wants to save his job, he would be wise to start Carr. Like this Raider Nation if you agree.

  15. I think (and hope) the Pryor experiment in Seattle has come to an end. Dude has all the physical tangibles but would much rather have BJ as out 3rd stringer.

Carr looked good for Oakland. Hopefully you fans found your franchise QB because the last 10+ years has had to be brutal to watch as a fan.

  16. Take your time resting that sore elbow, Shaub. You just lost your starting job. I don’t care if it wasn’t against starters, Carr’s a baller. If the Raiders still march Shaub out there for game 1, I’d be irate if I were a Raider fan.

  17. Good for Carr, the Raider Nation needed a sign of life. Now on to actual football. BTW as a Hawks fan I am okay with this outcome. The Hawks will come out more hungry than ever now next week. GO HAWKS

  18. Carr looked like a laser thrower to me. Amazing catches by the Raiders receivers too. Especially Denarius Moore. Hold onto him like Gold. Hands like velcro

  19. LOL. It was against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Gawd, I’m at the game, and you’d have though we won the Super Bowl, when we scored the 2nd TD. Let’s not live in a fantasy world folks. Seattle would wipe the floor with us in a real game. I love what I see in Carr, but let’s not get too excited yet.

  20. It’s only preseason but still, against the Seahawks first team D, Carr did look waaaaay better than Schaub. Matt should just ride pine and make sure his elbow is completely healed.

  21. There’s no question, Carr should and will start. DA and Regon the hot seat, there was a precedent set last year with Flynn, Carr was a high pick, and he brings the most QB upside – by a big margin – to win games.

Many folks argue a QB should sit a la Rodgers, Romo. But I say the cream eventually rises a la Mannings, Aikman.

The kid needs only on the job training. If he takes his lumps so be it, my poor Raiders aren’t winning it all this year. If he’s legit then he’ll be even better for it in the future.

    Raider Nation!!

  22. I would start Carr with McLoin at #2 and get rid of Schaub altogether.

    He’s clearly not worth it.

  23. I respect seattle, but we scored against their 1st team D, not just off that but it’s obvious we should start D.Carr he’s our future and he’s playing better than Schaub, so what the hell

  24. Dennis Allen’s huge man-crush on “Schauby” will not allow for a QB change. That’s fine, this isn’t a superbowl team. At least see what Schaub has left. Carr will be the franchise QB when the time is right and McGloin is just way too wild on his throws to be the man.

The real concern is the Raiders secondary… Possibly the worst in the league. For that, Dennis Allen(a DB specialist) should be handed his walking papers.

  25. I’m disappointed in Terrelle Pryor’s performance. While he appeared to turn in good completion stats, there were several plays where he should have thrown, but didn’t. I suppose we shouldn’t expect perfection in someone vying for a backup position, but it just didn’t look right…and probably removed any possibility of getting some trade value for him.

  26. I’m probably in the minority now, but I still think Carr should sit and be brought along slowly. While he looked very good against the Super Bowl champs, the fact remains that preseason games are meaningless (win or lose) and it’s a much different story in regular season. I’m still not sold on the o-line (especially with Watson at RT) and if Carr is prematurely thrown into the fire, he could wind up being ruined like his older brother was in Houston.

I think it’s best to go with Schaub to begin with, and if Schaub is ineffective (due either to physical issues or being gun-shy) then go with McGloin. Give Carr a few series per game to get his feet wet and then perhaps some starts late in the season. Hopefully Carr would be ready to start full-time in 2015.

  27. The Jets always get lucky despite not being very good. The Raiders will start Schaub, lose 31-7 in New York, and then tear it up with Carr under center the rest of the way.

  28. I wonder if Carr only dropped to the 2nd round due to his brothers struggles in the NFL. He has looked like the prototypical NFL QB this far. Oakland may have actually done something right this time!!

  29. Isn’t pre-season great? It makes lousy teams like the Raiders look like world beaters.
I remember a year when the Jets went 5 and 0 in pre-season, then proceeded to win about 2 games all year, if memory serves me correctly.

  30. UGHH ! Part of me says lets start Derek , he has had by far the best preseason of all the qb’s . Then the logical side enters my brain and says our Oline is shaky to say the least and all D’s are vanilla in the preseason . I don’t know .

The big thing I can’t get over is the elbow tendinitis outbreak that our starting qb’s have gotten in August the past two seasons . Schaub getting 8 million this season could be the worst signing in the NFL .

  31. You neglected to mention that while Seattle played plenty of defensive starters for the first quarter, Oakland played the starting OL but rested every other offensive starter. Which makes what Carr did even more eye-opening.

  32. It is just preseason, but… The first, and longest, TD drive was against the hawks first string. That drive alone looked better than Mr. Sore elbow has looked so far.

  33. Detroit went 4-0 in the preseason the year they went 0-16, it truly doesnt matter. These guys are up against vanilla defenses, no starters and if the starters are playing they fear injury so don’t go after it like they do in the regular season. Anyway good for Carr, I think in the right system he will be good, Oakland is not the right system unfortunately for him but maybe he can help turn that around.

  34. The Raiders play Seahawks every year in Preseason Game 4. As you can see from the previous 3 years results below the Raiders were beaten in all phases consistently and didn’t score a TD in 12 quarters. Anyway you spin it, last night’s performance was a significant improvement.

    Preseason Game 4 2014 Oakland wins 41-31
    Preseason Game 4 2013 Seattle wins 22-6
    Preseason Game 4 2012 Seattle wins 21-3
    Preseason Game 4 2011 Seattle wins 20-3

  35. Seahawks fan when the Niners struggled in preseason:
“That’s it, the window is closing on the Niners. No playoffs for them.”

Seahawks fans on last night’s game (not necessarily on PFT boards, yet):
“It’s only preseason. They were only fine-tuning things, nothing to worry about. Go Hawks!”

  36. Wilson had a good pre season, “Wilson for mvp, go hawks!”

Derrick Carr and p.manning makes the starting seasterisk defense look like fools, “it’s just pre season, it means nothing”

    Typical seasterisk fan

  37. dstep24 – It wasnt exactly against backups. In the 1Q the Seahawks had their Superbowl starting QB playing, on defense they had Richard Sherman.

It was a great performance against the Seahawks, i still wont get too excited but he played very well and it wasnt against scrubs

  38. Richard Sherman got kind of embarrassed last night. The look on Carroll and Shermans face after the first two touchdowns was kind of priceless

  39. Great showing in the preseason! Start him in the regular season if you want against the Hawks, and witness a Carr wreck requiring the jaws of life to peel him off the field.

  40. LOL so NOWWWWW Hawks fans are going to downplay the preseason? Not the last 3 weeks though right. Face it Carr took a bunch of 2nd stringers and marched right down the field on that starting D. Now I will stick to my guns that preseason is pretty much meaningless…. but you can’t just turn back after beating your chests the past few weeks. Raiders beat you like a drum. Unfortunately that is probably not a good sign for the raiders though when the rematch counts.

  41. I thought Carr looked good with quick release/ excellent accuracy. Saying he destroyed Seattle’s number 1 defense is an absolute joke.

Seattle 1st team was in for one drive, and back up CB’s Lane/Simon didn’t even make the trip.

Fans with knowledge understand the difference between 3rd and 4th pre-season games. Russell Wilson is looking as sharp as any QB in football right now.

  42. For all the haters saying it was against the 2nd team def and whatnot, I’ll give you that for 2 tds. The opening 12 play 68 yard drive was against the first team defense with oaklands starting O-line and Carr. #1 and #2 RB and WR did not play. If your job as coach is to win as many games as possible, let Carr start. Schaub would have brought a 3 n out against the first team like he has all summer throwing his little 5yd curl routes and I was a big advocate for Schaub until he completely laid to waste the offense. Let the kid sling it.

  43. And by the way. yes they did they have their Super Bowl QB playing. And he wiped floor with our defense on that first drive scoring in three or four plays. Then went over and had a coke and a smile.

  44. Carr played well. Time will tell if he played well enough to energize a fair weather fan base, and get some tarps removed.

  45. The Saints will win the SB this year. Schedule is set up very nicely for them to grab that #1 seed, and homefield advantage. Nothing would be sweeter than to finally see SEA in the Dome. We should see how tough they truly are.

  46. Vikes fan here and I thought Carr looked great. Dude looks hungry and full of fire.

Honest preseason question….who do you think is competing harder last night? Richard Sherman in the 4th preseason game or a 3rd stringer on the bubble? It’s better to look good regardless of competition, I guess.

Also, is it possible in 2 or 3 years we’ll be calling this one of the most under rated QB classes. Bortles, Carr, Teddy B, Garapolo, Mettenberger have all looked solid. Manziel has been inaccurate but still has us all on the edge of our seats. And only one in the top 10 picks.

  47. Not sure what’s happened with Schaub: it would appear that his confidence is shot, not to mention to ethusiasm for the game perhaps, now at age 33. Carr is 10 years younger, with probably 10x more enthusiam and zest, so it’s obvious: give Carr the starting nod for now.

  48. I know it was pre-season but what impressed me were the throws Carr was making. Yeah he got lucky on the TD to Rivera but on the first drive there were some great throws and he was throwing guys open. The last TD throw to Moore on the back shoulder was vetran-like.

Agreed! But if you remember, a year ago the experts where saying this would be a very rich QB class, and then downgraded it months prior to the draft. Perhaps they where right initially!

    Preseason means nada
To some teams, yes! To the Raiders, it means everything especially when you put up 21pts vs. the Seahawks first string!

  51. And by the way. yes they did they have their Super Bowl QB playing. And he wiped floor with our defense on that first drive scoring in three or four plays. Then went over and had a coke and a smile.

And yes.. then Carr drove straight down the field on your first string D and tied it… and then did it again after the fumble… oh and then did it two more times before he decided he was thirsty for a coke himself…..

  52. im glad the raiders found themselves a good qb. im not a raiders fan but i do support the bay area sports teams. good luck this year raiders

  53. If D.A. doesn’t go with Carr, he’s pretty much sealed his own destiny. all things being equal, Carr has a stronger arm and more upside. Shaub would make more sense as a backup to Carr. That’s free advice for you D.A. Free of charge. Just for you buddy.

  54. Its amusing reading the “raider nation” posts on the preseason game, to say the least.

Carr looked great, I’ll give you that, but he targeted Adams, a backup.
The Raiders did get a very good push on the Sea D, but 1 or 2 drives certainly doesn’t make a game folks! Come’on you Raider fans certainly have got to know that by now… looking great only to fall flat in the 2nd half during the regular season. Peyton got destroyed in the SB, think he is “done”?
These are grown men fighting for a roster spot, I wouldn’t have expected much less in the 4th preseason game, but to make dumb assumptions that Seattle is “done” because of that show is, well, dumb.
For the sake of Raider nation and the rest of the league I hope Carr does start, he’s much better then that cast off thats slated to start now, but you may want to hold off on that parade and all for now, and if you think your Raiders are that good I suppose we’ll see you in the SB where you can expect the Bronco treatment.

    Go Hawks.

  55. Nothing surprising here, , shehawks gettn beat when they are not inside that dump of a stadium and the artificial crowd noise

Now thats a hilarious statement by a Donkey fan on a Raiders post…. If I were a Denver fan (shivers) I’d be way too embarrassed to comment on the team that whipped our butts.. and to call Clink stadium a dump on a Raiders post is just a slap in the face to Oakland, i would think anyway. In reality Clink is an awesome, clean and well made facility, but whatever..

  56. Somehow I’m happy for the Raiders getting a quality QB. If you look at Carr’s throwing motion, he has a nice, easy release. Looks so effortless. Hope he pans out for the Raiders, if not, maybe a couple years from now, the Niners can pick him up.

  57. Im not even bothering with reading the haters posts. I pass em like grannys on the highway. The kid looked electric last night. 11-13 and every single one of em straight LASERS. Serious accuracy yet with smarts. Whatever it is, do the right thing Coach….

  58. Aug 29, 2014 9:13 AM

Detroit went 4-0 in the preseason the year they went 0-16, it truly doesnt matter.
The Raiders went 4-0 in preseason in 2006, went 2-14 for the year, and ended up with Lane Kiffin and JaMarcus Russell. Talk about getting screwed. Carr made good plays against starters and scrubs. He’s tall, he can move, and he has a live arm. That’s the type of stuff to watch for in practice games.

  59. I like how defensive the Seattle fans are…even making excuses about it being 2nd and 3rd stringers. It was a preseason game and every team is going to start at 0-0 next week. We all get that. Heck, as has been stated only four of our starting defenders played and the only offensive starters we played was our TE and offensive line.

Raider fans are excited that we have a young QB with a strong arm, accuracy, and moxy. He was slinging the ball and getting it to where the receivers could make a play. The entire offense fed off his confidence and energy. The crowd in the stadium did as well. Until this game, I had no hope for this season. Our first three preseason games inspired little confidence when our dink and dunk offense under Schaub couldn’t sustain drives or score. McGloin to Butler was as exciting as it got. Our 3rd string QB to our #4/#5 WR.

This kid is the future for us and I am ready for that future to start now.

  60. Last week Seahawk fans acting like preseason win spells repeat.this week, ” Oh, its preseason, blah, blah, blah!”

Cue defensive seahurt fans and the outrage. Every former SB team in the past ten years have not been back. You know why? Cause its hard and every other team gives you their best.

  61. This is the feedback Dennis Allen needs to hear heading into the season. If the best players will play then you do the math. We got a chance to break the mold here. Don’t get me wrong, I like Matt Shaub, but Carr is franchise right now. We got a lot of momentum heading into week 1. Start Derek Carr and let Shaub sit. I guarantee it’ll do Shaub some good. It might light a fire under Shaub’s butt and he’ll bring his A game too. We got a tough tough year ahead of us. Now’s not the time to back track. Just Win Baby!!!
