In one of his various visits to PFT Live, Bills running back C.J. Spiller mentioned that he had not yet hired a new agent since the March 2011 passing of Gary Wichard, who died on the same day the lockout started.
With Spiller now starting his contract year, it makes sense to have representation, especially if the Bills decide to try to extend Spiller’s deal.
According to Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal, Spiller has signed with Chad Speck and Thomas Sims.
A top-10 pick in 2010, Spiller has shown flashes of potential that could make him one of the best running backs in the NFL. He’s never had the opportunity to be the go-to guy, but he nevertheless has generated a career average of 5.1 yards per carry.
With the position devalued significantly in recent years, it’ll be interesting to see what Spiller can get on the open market, absent a new deal. With veteran tailbacks getting paid like veteran punters and kickers, a big year could make Spiller one of the rare exceptions to what has become the unofficial NFL rule.
