The Saints and Robert Meachem just can’t quit each other.

Meachem left for San Diego as a free agent for the 2012 season, but things didn’t work out with the Chargers and Meachem was back in New Orleans in time to play 15 games for the Saints last season. Meachem was cut as the team made its way to 53 players last week, a departure that has turned out to be even shorter lived than his previous one.

Meachem is back with the Saints and took part in practice on Wednesday. He took the roster spot of linebacker Khairi Fortt, who has been placed on injured reserve with the designation to return. Fortt will be allowed to resume practicing in six weeks and play in a game after eight weeks out of the lineup.

The Saints probably don’t have an integral role in mind for Meachem or they wouldn’t have cut him in the first place, but he’s a known commodity to Drew Brees who averaged over 20 yards a catch last season so he could see some snaps against the Falcons.
