Colts expected to take a look at Mikel Leshoure

The Colts lost Vick Ballard for the season to an Achilles injury, leaving them with Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw as the top choices to tote the ball when the team decides to keep it on the ground.

Given Richardson’s piddling production last year and Bradshaw’s injury history, it might not be the worst idea for the Colts to shore up the back end of their depth chart. Dan Herron and Zurlon Tipton currently occupy the bottom rungs, but former Lion Mikel Leshoure could work his way into the mix.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that Leshoure is scheduled to work out for the team at some point this week. Leshoure, who led Detroit in rushing in 2012 before being relegated to the bench in 2013, was waived as the Lions dropped to 53 players and there haven’t been other reports of interest in his services.

It’s not the first time the Colts have been linked to Leshoure. There was word of trade inquiries last season before they made the deal with Cleveland to acquire Richardson. We can’t know whether such a trade would have been more successful in 2013, but it surely would have cost Indy less than the first-round pick they sent to the Browns.
