Dee Milliner out this week, Jets secondary a mess

AP

At least they’re playing a rookie quarterback.

That’s the bright side for the Jets defense going into the opener against the Raiders, as they’re still short-handed in the secondary.

Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters today that cornerback Dee Milliner would not play this week because of a high ankle sprain.

That leaves Darrin Walls and converted safety Antonio Allen as his starters, with Kyle Wilson as the nickel.

The Jets’ lack of qualified corners is as obvious as it is long-standing.

Since cutting AWOL Dimitri Patterson and losing rookie Dexter McDougle to a torn ACL, the Jets are bringing guys in off the street to play. The fact they’re getting Raiders second-round pick Derek Carr this week might be enough to save them, but against a more competent passing game, this would be a major issue.

  1. So funny how the Raiders went from a longshot to almost being favored on the road after benching Schaub.

Equally pathetic is how the Jets could potentially get torched by rookie Derek Carr.

I won’t watch this game but I’ll be interested in how it shakes out.

  2. Champ Bailey, Asante Samuel….are there really no better options out there? Sometimes I think the Jets front office is trying to get Rex Ryan fired. The fact this guy finds a way to hover around .500 every year is a mystery to me. They give him one of the worst rosters year in and year out. Disclosure – NOT a Jets fan!

  3. jets just have to play a lot of zones and rely on their quality safeties plus the best front 7 in the game….

Champ Bailey and Asante Samuel are finished….they also signed Leon McFadden who was a 3rd round pick last year that’s their best bet at being legitimate…

  4. In estimating the ability of the Jets secondary, I will defer to Rex Ryan. He seems to know a thing or two about defense, and he isn’t worried. P.S., the Packers defense and O-line looked so bad last night that I don’t think the deficiencies in the Jets secondary will matter week 2 either.

  5. maybe they should let Carr throw a regular season pass before they count him out. If he was a 1st rounder theyd be talking about how great of a QB he is.

  6. The Jets’ D is still the best fantasy start this week. I benched Seattle’s D just to start the Jets’ D this week in both my leagues. I don’t care who the Jets put out there at CB. It’s the Raiders and a rookie QB. Joe Trolonto and I could play CB for Gang Green and the Jets’ D would still be the best fantasy start in Week 1.

Fantasy owners should be looking at Houston’s D for week 2.

  7. And the circus music starts…

Much as I am not a Jets fan, this is somewhat of an embarrassment. But in their defense, any competent cornerback is already on a roster, and the Baileys/Samuels of the world might be worse.

  8. Jets are a clown show and they always will be as long as Rex Ryan is the coach.

He really is an absolute clown, it’s amazing more people don’t see this.

  9. i’m a biased jets fan, but this is so overblown. darrin walls should have been a starter last year. he’ll be fine. antonio allen is a question mark, but i’m sure rex will give him help.

keep talking about the jets secondary while ignoring that raiders offensive line! rex won’t need to blitz vs that group!

  10. This could be a route. I know it was 1 am on the east coast but Carr put on a clinic against seattleseahawks starting dee. I see the Raiders in an upset 35-24

  11. Darrin Walls and Antonio Allen are not elite, but they are serviceable as long as the front seven does their job. Also, Patterson was getting beat all preseason long, so his departure wasn’t exactly a huge blow.

  12. Smart move can’t rush a high ankle and will need him when they play the real QB’s in the coming weeks.

  13. C’mon, Gantt.

I think you can concede that the Seahawks 2nd/3rd string DB’s are better than the Jets and Carr hung tough.

Once again, your constant jabs at the Silver and Black only serve to further illustrate your obsession with everything RAIDERS.

    HOF vote? Really?

    Carry on…

  14. Good thing the jets have all that salary cap money laying around. I mean they could of spent on corner back but I guess they want to build Scrooge Mcduck’s money vault instead.

How does what he thinks of his ability have anything to do with this? Peyton missed an entire season with his neck injury, does that still not make him one of the greatest to ever play?

  16. Jets haven’t even played down of football yet and everyone is calling them a circus, a mess, a joke, etc. Stop hating, the media hates the jets and loves bashing them. The Raiders are traveling cross country with a rookie QB and no one for him to throw to. He won’t be able to rely on the run game because of the Jets’ front 7, and I think Rex knows a thing or two about disguising packages and making young quarterbacks’ head spin. Relax and let them play the game

  17. @jamishi2000
probably be less hating if your team and coach didn’t talk smack all off-season, year after year after year…

sort of like you not getting to the Superbowl, year after year after year after year…..

    HAIL DC

  18. Rex will be thinking about aggressive play from his good D-line will limit the exposure of his DBs.
Rookie QB Derek Carr will get a baptism of fire.

  19. thank god you guys don’t have to deal with that diva revis anymore, right??? haha ya that’s what i thought. keep yackin’ about spygate though instead of focusing on why your gm pulled an obama(did nothing) did a time of crisis.

  20. Ahhhhh…..this is setting up so nice for my Raiders and Derek Carr. Nobody…and I mean nobody gives him a chance against the vaunted Jets defense which didn’t even finish in the top 10 last year. Yes he is a rookie, but he’s not chopped liver out there. I guess that’s why they play the games. We’ll see Sunday.

  21. Means the D-line needs to step it up. Anyone can play corner for 2-3 seconds with some pressure on the QB.

  22. The Jets wouldn’t be OK against *any* of the other 31 teams in the NFL — but to dismiss the Raiders because “it’s the Raiders” is just ignorant. Carr went 11 of 13 against Seattle throwing to these WRs, guys that include James Jones (of Green Bay), and Carr spread the ball around, even throwing against Richard Sherman, a guy Rodgers wouldn’t go near. Rex Ryan’s “scheme” isn’t going to help them if the Raiders go with a Spread offense, like Carr used to run in college. The NFL is all about taking advantage of match-ups. If your Z WR is better than their Nickle, you abuse them. Endlessly. When they try to rotate to shore up the weakness, you have single-coverage on the outside, and you can kill them deep.

You’re complaining about people dismissing the Jets, and then you got and completely dismiss the Raiders. Derek Carr methodically marched the Raiders offense downfield vs the Seahawks. Raiders offense managed to lead long drives under Shaub vs both Packers and Lions too. So you’re dismissing the Raiders offense entirely. Not to mention, McFadden, MJD and Murray has looked great in preseason thus far. Moreover, the Raiders front 7 has been able to generate quite a bit of pressure, throughout preseason we constantly had guys in the backfield. This Raiders team is probably better than your Jets team.

  24. “Jets haven’t even played down of football yet and everyone is calling them a circus, a mess, a joke, etc. Stop hating, the media hates the jets and loves bashing them.”

Their head coach is a clown, how do you not see this by now. He is a joke. Do you follow this team? That is what they are, a circus, no one is making things up.

  25. Love how everyone bashes the Jets yet NONE of us really know what’s going on because we’re not there we just take these writers (who’s job it is to sensationalize to get you to do what you’re doing) words as gospel ,Rex always talking blah blah blah well he’s got 700 mics in face every day unlike our buddies in San Diego who have no fans and 5 mics on the coach so yeah he talks because he keeps getting asked questions silly isn’t it??

EVERY coach says they’re going to the Super Bowl, every year that’s their job ,if they don’t think or say that they’ll be sitting on their moms couch like half the people on these comment boards.

  26. Don’t worry Jets fans. It’s the Raiders, even when your team can’t beat them. They find a way to beat themselves. At least that’s what their fans say.

  27. BTW I think Carr will be very good and not because he marched down the field against the Hawks in a preseason game, because he’s got talent.

  28. This is a huge opportunity for Derek Carr to shine. He needs to seize this by the throat.

He gets the ball out quick, and if those WRs are open, or Rivera they won’t need to run the ball that much.

Exactly what league are you watching? I have NEVER heard any coach say they are going to the Super Bowl. I’ve heard a lot of coaches say their goal is to get to the playoffs. I’ve heard a lot of coaches say their first goal is to win the division they’re in. I’ve heard a lot of coaches say they want to see improvement from their defense/offense/special teams. But ONLY the jests coach says they’re going and will win the Super Bowl. And no coaches job is to put that much pressure on the players and make them look like buffoons at the end.

Thats ok, nobody with a brain would bench Seattle “D” , that is unless you can get the “D ” agains the Chargers….After all Mr Rivers has thrown 60 interceptions over the past four season…….let’s just say nobody does it better than that

  32. C’mon y’all. Its still the Raiders we are talking about here!

More importantly will be the unveiling of the new and improved Jets offense courtesy of C. Johnson, Decker and Amaro.

Home field, long travel for Raiders, rookie QB…this game is an easy cover for the Jets BTW.

  33. I love all of this Jets hate. I love that most of you squids spend so much energy on hate. It must be exhausting really. And I LOVE that all of you are going to be bitterly disappointed come 4:15 Sunday. Oh well. And to the Raiders fan that thinks Carr is better than Geno, time to take your medication pal.
