Pete Carroll: Seahawks didn’t tackle well enough vs. Packers

AP

The Seahawks look like the best team in the NFL, but coach Pete Carroll says they can get better.

Specifically, Carroll says the Seahawks could tackle better than they did on Thursday night against the Packers. According to Carroll, Packers running back Eddie Lacy

“I was disappointed that we bounced off the guy as much as we did,” Carroll said. “We tried to hit him more than tackle him and that’s why he was a little more effective than he should have been. [Lacy] only gained [34] yards, so it’s no big deal, but our expectations are higher than that. Those guys will all look at that film and they’ll all be disappointed that they didn’t stay with the tackling plan that we had.”

Carroll is a connoisseur of fine tackling, and it’s not surprising that he saw some things on Thursday night that the Seahawks’ defense could have done better. But if the Seahawks are going to get even better on defense than they were against the Packers, that’s a scary thought for the rest of the NFL.

  1. Picky, picky Coach Pete. But correct, actually, you have to wrap’em up. Everyone wants to be Ronnie Lott 2 or Rodney Harrison, but it ain’t gonna happen.

  2. Same old script. SB champ routs decent team at home in opening game. That would have happened last year too had Baltimore been allowed to host their home game with the Broncos. (Orioles should fry in hell for their greed. It’s like it’s just a baseball game. You play 162 of them).

Hawks may win first 4 or so and then things will fizzle out.

  3. I know I’m not the only one thinking this, but man I hate Pete Carroll. The guy never shuts his trap and I see where Sherman gets it from. Give Lacy some credit that he is a big, physical back! I can’t wait until this team falls apart.

  4. As a 49ers fan I’ll be the first to say….the ‘Hawks aren’t only better but they look even hungrier. Wonder if my boys still have the dog in ’em this year.

  5. Must have said that backwards.. I think he meant the Packers didn’t tackle well enough. Hawks seemed to tackle just fine, especially when it came to Lacy. That was pure domination…. hats off to the hawks for that game.

  6. They missed some tackles on a couple or long runs . If not for broken tackles GB rushes for less than 40 yards .

Pete and the hawks are never satisfied ,sign of a champion !

  7. In other news, Jerry Jones’ master plan is coming together in Cowboy country to build yet another dynasty. Tony Romo remains the best QB in this entire league and Dallas is the number one offense in this league. We will carry our injured defense and still be NFC’s best powerhouse.

    Dallas Cowboys
Seattle (All the sudden we can fill our stadium) Seahawks
    New Orleans Saints
    Green Bay Packers
    In that order

  8. “The Seahawks look like the best team in the NFL”
    =======================================

They looked good but…… no one else has played their first game yet.

  9. As a Charger fan I am so glad that the NFL has the Seahawks play on Thursday night and the Chargers on the late late game Monday night. That way the Seahawks get 10-days to rest and prepare and the Chargers get 6-days. Just what you want with the world champs coming to town.

  10. What a douche. This is like having a qb throw for 500 yards and 7 td’s and say afterwards that he was a little off his game – “We’re just so good… we expect more from ourselves.”

Also, apologies to the Hawks fans – I was at the game last night and you guys were pretty loud. My ears are still ringing.

Your #12 was better than our #12 last night.

  11. It was clear Seattle players were going for the ball and trying to cause the fumble rather than wrap up on running backs. Lacy is a strong running and more elusive than he looks but he was running east and west for the most part.

PFF tried to have a post calling out Seahawks for poor tackling and reference their instructional video but there wasn’t any YAC yards for their recievers. Pete will address the tackling focus and it will be strong just like after the Rams/Bucs last year.

  12. so they will be sure to pump in more HGH before the league starts testing for it – which will be a very long time from now…

  13. Well if he thought Seattle’s tackling was bad then Im afraid of what he’d say about GBs tackling? (If you can call it that)

  14. Thats right in sports never be satisfied. There is always room for improvement. That type of fire and desire is the difference between winners, losers & champions.

  15. Vikings fan here with major respect to the Packers. However, last night was as bad as I seen the Packers with Aaron Rodgers in the line-up. Packers need to beat teams like that to win a Superbowl but it seems like they may be another one and out for the playoffs.

  16. They weren’t hitting on all cylinders on defense or offense. First game, wasn’t too sloppy, but they will get much crisper execution as the season goes on.

  17. The rest of the nfl is scared of the Seahawks and they should be. The Seahawks haters are scared as well. There’s some that will come on here and talk tough but their envy comes through. Every nfl fan outside of Seattle wishes they had a team like this. Young, fast and hungry.

  18. Of course the Seahawks need to improve their tackling since the Packers kept falling down and or dropping the pass to avoid getting hit and tackled by Seahawk players.

The game was one-sided because the Packers lack the depth and talent level of the NFL’s upper tier teams. The Packers will look decent when they play the Cowgirls and other NFL bottom dwellers such as the Texans and Raiders.

For sure the glory days of the Packers are gone right now despite everything Rodgers tries to do. It looks like Chicago will back in to win the division over the Lions with the Vikings and Packers fighting to avoid the cellar.

  19. Damn,…best team, best coach, best fans, best owner, asst coaches, game plan, staff, city, stadium, cheerleaders, mascot, parking spaces, beer, commentators, vendors, music, food, weed, coffee,…whats not to love haters?

Guess you don’t consider the Packers a real team.Either that or you don’t feel they actually played yet.

I get your point though, but what ‘s your argument? What do you expect to see this weekend that will change the assessment of the Hawks being the best?

  21. Always strive for perfection. That is what makes a champion. If you think that is wrong and if you don’t like it then shut up and enjoy complacency while you wear your Mark Sanchez jersey.

  24. Seattle looked really good last night. I think Seattle needs to make sure Percy doesn’t carry too much of the load so that he is 100% healthy by the year end. He is so dynamic and so fun to watch, but playing the way he plays takes its’ toll. Last night he ran out of bounds a couple times rather than put the shoulder down which is a good sign. He really fits in well in Seattle and is hitting the prime of his career.

I think if either Percy, Wilson, or Beastmode gets hurt they become very vulnerable. If they all stay healthy they are clearly the NFC favorite.

Then again, any given Sunday, but man they made the Packers look slow and over matched in just about every facet of that game.

  25. Scary thing is he’s right. They missed on quite a few tackles they normally make, and Harvin was having an off game too. He seemed to trip himself up almost every time he had the ball and pretty much tackled himself. A little more coaching up of the O-Line and Maxwell and they’ll be nearly unbeatable.

Hope you can hang around till 2018 pal

  27. forgive the Seattle fans

    ever been out there?

    constant rain
    geographic isolation
    west coast time zone
    stench of liberalism
    excessive drug use
    general unfamiliarity with winning

    what should we expect?

  28. No question the Seahawks have a good football team but you beat an average talent team with a very good QB at home. The NFL season is a long and winding a long road. In other words wipe off the drawl and relax Hawk fans.

  29. I’m not a hawks fan, but live in Seattle. If you think this team isn’t head and shoulders better than any other team you’re delusional.

Oh, and politicallyincorrect, you’re just ignorant.

  30. “We tried to hit him more than tackle him …”

Carroll is just being coy, this was part of the game plan. Irksome. Don’t like him but the Seahawks fought hard and won. They played just like Carroll expected them to.

  31. Why don’t the rest of the NFL teams just waive the white flag , throw in the towel and just award the Lombardi trophy to Petey right now after one game . What a classless douche he is turning out to be.

  32. Love how Pistol Pete was quoted yesterday as saying the most important thing on his team was discipline. This from THE most penalized team in the NFL and I’m guessing one of the most suspended teams for PED’s. I have no doubt that most of what goes on in Seattle is a charade masking massing PED use and cheating! Does anyone really think he’s changed a lick since USC?!

  33. Pete Carroll won the player poll, “Which head coach would you most like to play for?”

    -ESPN, Jan 28, 2014

    Nothing has changed.

  34. I have to agree along with pass coverage on the left side, the newq guy needs to work on his speed, tackling and hitting power..

you might be surprised how much you can take off a receivers step after you ring his bell once or twice, hit him!!

on a side note must be nice getting to the point where you can work on fine tuning your squad, by mid season the Hawks should be performing like a fined tuned swiss watch with the power of a top fuel funny car and dynamics of a UNIX operating system

    GO HAWKS!!!

  35. wow some major butt hurt people on this blog. SO many people misplacing their anger, Yeah the seahawks gave up 16 pts, so obviously they have room to improve bc they shouldnt have even given up that many. GB couldnt run the ball and got atleast half their total yards from broken tackles.

In case you didnt know the seahawks miss the least amount of tackles in the league, for them they had an off night tackling.

And lastly lets not act like this was a press conference which he was asked a question about the tackeling. Should we go listen to GB press conference and proclain their all quitters based on their sorry press conference attitude?

For goodness sake this was his weekly post game press conference where he was judging their perfomance and needs to keep his team on point. Is he supposed to come out and say yeah were pretty good we played perfect we have nothing to improve on?

And quit the boasting comments if he wanted to boast he could have said the seahawks really held them to 9 pts seeing how over half their points came from 2 big miscues by seattle . Did he menton that or any other hypothetcial situation meant to further supress the Packers back into their whole theyve dug already in week 1!

feels bad that you were proven week one to already be pretenders. Youve been pumping yourself up so much only to realize your not in the same class as the world champs, for that I understand why your so bitter over every seahawks blog!

  36. Saw a lot areas for improvement..pass protection(made Peppers look 21 again), Maxwell seemed an easy target all night and will go against better receivers than Nelson this year, Punt receiving team!, and yes, some questionable tackling- though I thought much worse against Starks than Lacey. Caught a few breaks on GB penalties that could have seriously changed the course of the game.

Overall, a good opening game. They should tighten up the loose ends as the season progresses.

  37. Pete Carroll is still a cheater who ran from the NCAA at USC.
Whatever comes out of his mouth is subject to question!

  38. Did anyone here actually watch the game? I’m the a huge Hawk fan and after the 1st quarter I was nervous. I dont think PC just mean the act of tackling, but everything that goes along with it, e.g. over running plays, not staying home, taking bad angles etc.

For those of you who think Pete isn’t authentic, if you met him you would be star struck and would take a moment to compose yourself. Then, and only then, when you talk to him would you realize he’s a really good dude. And JS is the same way, I’ve had the luxury of being able to chat with both of them on multiple occasions and they are the real McCoy. Great at football stuff, but great humans.

    Haters gunna hate

    Go Hawks!

  39. After reviewing the tape of the Kam Chancellor hit to Jordy Nelson’s head, the NFL has announced that Brandon Meriweather will be suspended 2 more games.

  40. If the Seahawks can stay healthy they are going to be REALLY tough to knock off. The only team that could match up to the Seahawks in the playoffs last year were the Niners but the Niners have a number of issues w/ some of their best players on defense so I have no idea who is going to challenge them. And if Harvin can stay healthy? Good luck beating them.

For all the Russell Wilson fans it doesn’t hurt that he has the best defense in the league, a very good O-line, & Marshawn Lynch who is probably the most difficult RB in the NFL to tackle.

It was about an average game from Lacy, at 2.8 yards per carry.
    =================================
Eddie Lacy averaged 4.1 YPC last year. This highlights the typical lack of knowledge of Vikings’ fans.

  43. Anyone else notice the missed holding calls?

When offensive linemen tackle defenders usually it makes it an obvious flag situation.

Still don’t understand the Seahawks fascination…

Any given Sunday, but that Thursday, greenbay dropped picks, dropped touchdowns, dropped catches, had penalties called against when normally no penalty is called, and calls were missed against Seahawks. Don’t get it twisted, I couldn’t careless about greenbay either, but damn, the only reason I watched is cause no other game was on. That was just horrid to watch all over.

To be honest, reminded me of the scab ref season.

  44. Come on people…yes they won…good on them…before we anoint this team repeat Champs – a quick review…they beat a team that went 8-7-1 last year in an god awful division and the game was certainly not in the bag half way through the 4th…let’s reserve some judgment

  45. yea i agree espically saftey Earl Thomas hes trying to tackle like Jack Tatum but there was only 1 Jack Tatum the Assassin …Thomas needs to wrap up and stop going for the knockout rules changed anyways

  46. For us 12’s we know they can play better. For the rest of you ,DID YOU WATCH SB48?. Thats how good they can be and even in that game they allowed 8 points. Sucks to be a Hawk fan these days 😉

  47. 1 game has been played between 2 teams; yet after this 1 game the winner somehow automatically looks like the best team in the NFL? Talk about jumping the gun.

Just like every season, we won’t begin to find out the true contenders until around the 3rd quarter of the season. A lot can and does happen between now and then.

  48. Have to LMAO@ at all you “hawk” fans……….Seattle is clearly the best! You played ONE game this season you clowns. And its a LONG way to the post season.get a grip.

first of all, why should the Orioles have to bend when the MLB schedule was released first? second of all, seeing as you’re completely uneducated like most ppl, this was not the Orioles call. it’s MLB’s & the union. a team traveling from one city to another cannot play in a day game without a day off. third of all, the ravens were scheduled to host the broncos all the whole time, not vice versa. fourth, you mean to tell me that the highest scoring offense in NFL history wouldn’t have lit up a less than stellar Ravens D, where they continually crumbled in the fourth qtr? do i need to keep going with reasons why you’re wrong?

  50. Shame on NFL for allowing Cheatin Pete to tuck tail and run from crimes at USC, leaving destruction in his path, to payday in Seattle….. there is always a Seattle out there, lack of class and desperation for relevance, that hire people like this………… the NFL should not allow college coaches like Carroll in the league until mess left behind is cleared

this said, he is a perfect fit for Seattle

  51. Actually Pete was spot on. I was impressed by Lacey. Very difficult to tackle. The only reason he had so few yards was he didn’t get to play much.

And yes, when a team is the best team on the NFL last year and comes back and plays a team most consider top 5 and wins convincingly, looking better than last year, it’s a valid assumption that at this point they’re still the best team.

But, before burying GB, remember San Fran and New Orleans lost in Seattle by a combined 63-10 during the regular season. Seattle’s a tough place to play.

Finally, Seattle has had no suspensions this year and had the best road record (tied with several other teams) in the NFL last season.

How butthurt y’all gonna be if Seattle doesn’t lose soon?

  52. So, judging by comments most folks aren’t aware that Seattle has special tackling techniques not employed by most of the league.

No matter how good you are, there’s always something to work on and room for improvement. And yes, I saw many missed tackles by LB’s, and CB’s…Even KC had a rare missed tackle due to poor technique which was not a Seahawk style tackle.

Since when did acknowledging an area of needed improvement warrant the wrath of haters? Oh that’s right, haters will hate on any Hawk post….silly me!

If you have the opportunity to speak with Mr. Carroll again please tell him the those of us still in SoCal still love him and wish him nothing but the best. Personally, I’m delighted he’s having so much success in today’s NFL. I would hate to be a Jets fan right about now, considering he was fired after only one year.

Pete Carroll left Los Angeles a better place than before he got here. How many people can claim something like that?
