Chip Kelly doesn’t think Evan Mathis is out for the year

The Eagles rallied for a 34-17 victory over the Jaguars on Sunday after a dreadful start left fans booing them in the first half, but they lost guard Evan Mathis to a knee injury on the way to the win.

Mathis is set to see doctors on Monday to find out about the severity of the injury, something that will have a lot of fingers crossed in Philadelphia. A torn ACL is the great fear with knee injuries, but coach Chip Kelly said on WIP Monday morning that the initial diagnosis is that Mathis avoided the injury that cost wide receiver Jeremy Maclin all of last season.

“From what I understand, it’s not a [Jeremy Maclin] situation where Evan is done for the year,” Kelly said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “We just need to weather the storm.”

If, as Jeff McLane of the Inquirer reports, Mathis suffered an MCL injury, he’ll still miss some time. The Eagles are without right tackle Lane Johnson for three more games and they had to do a lot of shuffling Sunday after Johnson’s replacement Allen Barbre had to leave the game with an ankle injury. Another injury would have left them without an offensive lineman on the bench, so that’s something they’ll need to address this week if Mathis is going to be sidelined.
