Extended version of Rice incident shows spitting, obscenity

The NFL might not have been able to obtain a copy of the Ray Rice punching his wife in the face video, but the Associated Press did.

And the copy they saw shows more of the startling confrontation between the former Ravens running back and his then-fiancee Janay Palmer.

The extended video included audio, and Rice and Palmer could be heard shouting obscenities at each other. She appeared to have spit at him before he knocked her unconscious with a straight left.

The video was shown to the AP Monday night on the condition of anonymity “because the official isn’t authorized to release it.”

(Note to NFL Security: Try this method in the future.)

The extended video showed Rice dragging Palmer out of the hotel, and staff members at the now-closed casino saying “She’s drunk, right?” and then, “No cops.” Rice didn’t respond at that point.

While any more footage won’t change the visceral reactions to the initial viewings of punch, the fact it’s available to news organizations is an interesting idea.

  1. Still no reason to hit a woman, NFL players are trained to look and play like Hercules, one punch could really do harm on the average person.

  2. Unless she tried to chop his Acorns off, what she did prior to the punch shouldn’t change anything.

  3. Hard to believe that a 27 year old man decided now was the time to hit his GF/wife. Willing to bet he’s beat on her many times; this is the only time it was captured on tape.

  4. I’d be more concerned that this kind of thing happens many many times every day throughout the country. Just ask any police officer working the midnight shift. None of us were shocked by the footage.

I’m also not disappointed in the NFL at all. They are just a business after all. My disappointment lies within the investigation and court case and sentencing. That’s who the media questions should be targeted at, not with the NFL’s two game suspension and subsequent firing of Ray Rice.

  5. The video on tmz shows him spitting at her outside the elevator and then perhaps again inside the elevator.

  6. The NFL wasnt interested in seeing it, so they didnt try, or they are lying.

    Par for Goodell.

  7. Instead of just blaming the NFL, aren’t you a member of the press? The Freedom of the Press is given more access to government things than any “non profit” organization so where were you? How come it took TMZ to produce the video, a gossip blog, when you all consider yourselves an inside source to sports news? How come you didn’t have this video 5 months ago?

  8. Everyone from Janay, Ray, Hotel Security, the NFL and The Ravens failed miserably on this incident.

Let’s hope everyone learns from this.

  9. “Each hits the other before Rice knocks Palmer off her feet and into a railing.”

Why not include that major piece of info from the AP report? Doesn’t excuse a thing, Ray Rice is still trash, but it’s a big piece of the puzzle no matter how inexcusable his actions or reactions were.

TMZ has already admitted to highly editing the video they released yesterday. The raw version they also released was far less clear conclusive. I think it would benefit all involved to also release this new AP video.

  10. Whatever happened they both were part of and things can get out of control quite quickly,in the heat of the moment sh** happens which is why people get killed and assaulted. The state of NJ is just as much at fault in my opinion and the NFL is now overreacting to what they should’ve already known.

  11. You’re very dumb if you honestly think this is the first time he hits her. Look at his reaction after he does, like it was nothing. He’s done it before, he’ll do it again.

  12. Everyone from Janay, Ray, Hotel Security, the NFL and The Ravens failed miserably on this incident.

Let’s hope everyone learns from this.

Kevin you left out one part to this shameful episode….the Raven fans who so blindly and ignorantly defended this jerk. The constant mantra of I need to see the video by so many Raven fans is producing…….crickets from those stalwarts of stupidity. Ya, I hope you all learned if it caws like a Raven it’s probably a guilty Araven.

  13. The narrative keeps being spun towards “we don’t know what led up to this” in talking about her spitting and cursing, etc. Suggesting there’s more to this story, that maybe something could have occurred to make Ray’s actions more forgivable. BS. For those of you who were not raised any better–it’s never, ever, ever ok to hit a woman. Ever. No excuse, no circumstances. Women killed and abused by spouses and partners is one of their biggest health risks. It’s sick and so prevalent. So, let’s never point any kind of focus on what she did. It does not matter. She did not attack him with a deadly weapon, forcing him to defend himself–so other than that, there is no provocation. None. Just stop it, then go ask your mother’s why you were not raised any better than that.

  14. Boy, life can sure change in a hurry.

Ten or fifteen seconds … if you could go back in time and just undo those actions in that time frame …

  15. Why are all the coaches around the league, players and his teammates not saying anything about this “I’m not gonna get into that” is the quote of week, all theses dudes need to man up and tell it how it is,Ray Rice is a piece of crap! Maybe they don’t want to offend him before they try to sign him to a contract after his suspension. The fact their hiding from commenting is part of the problem,if you mess up,you gotta deal with the consequences, just like everyone else in society, any of these cats had this happen to their daughter or members of their family, you wouldn’t be able to shut em up!

  16. If your fiancée spits on you, and you’ve “had enough,” you call off the wedding. You DON’T knock her out!

  17. So to recap, liberals and feminists (as if there’s a difference) have been telling us for years that there’s no difference between men and women, that men and women are equal and that women are not the weaker or fairer sex, that they should be treated the same.

Meanwhile, this equal, not weaker, friend of Ray’s spits on him and assaults him while they are drunk at a casino in the middle of the night. So he treats her like he would treat one of his boys.

And now we’re supposed to feel sorry for her because she’s a defenseless little girl? Really?

  18. ancient history. it’s done. he’s done.

question is…are ravens done ? can they account for rice’s lost production in the run gm ?

  19. So, I can’t protect myself from my psycho GF who spits at me through her razor sharp venomous teeth and claws at me with her deadly blade like claws?

    WTF?

  20. Ray Rice is finished in the NFL. Even if he serves a one year suspension, he still needs to get reinstated by the league.
Plus he will be 29 years old and there are a ton of young running backs that are much quicker than him.

  21. pathetic

now the league.. Goodell.. is using the Kraft/Pats “we was duped” strategy to cover-up corruption and criminal activity

NFL is most likely lying….. if not, they could have easily got the video and knew what it was…. I see no difference between having the video and trying to not see so they can claim plausible deniability

the cover-up here is worse than the crim; Goodell needs to be fired (no resigning and getting paid) and the police need investigated for not prosecuting Rice

this is bad… but, maybe we get rid of Goodell here… which is a good thing

  22. Lets see. Casino set to close doors. Some security guy saves a copy on flash drive. Loses his job and sells it to TMZ for a $100,000. Thats the world we live in.

The missing copy that is floating around somewhere is just that. Its a copy. Do you think another “copy” could have been requested?

The Ravens and NFL triend to bury this video from going public. Someone saw it no doubt. Just not first hand. Lawyers can hide behind the Plausible Deniability stance.

    Remember Watergate?

  23. TMZ could have shown the full video, but they have an agenda to show Rice in the worst possible light.

Rice committed a terrible act, but if news outlets are going to release video like this, at least release the full content.

He has been judged in the court of public opinion, so at least let the public have all the facts.

  24. Maybe all of you need to watch the video again from the start, as his fiance’ is coming around the post to go to the elevator Ray Rice spit’s on her. Why is no on saying anything about that? Ray is a moron for what he did and she is a moron for marrying him after being knocked out.

  25. Spitting on a person is total disresepect. Its was what whites did to blacks when they sat the lunch counters of the South in the 50’s-60’s. Spitting is a definite NO-NO!

  26. the whole idea of “its never ok to hit a women” is ridiculous to me

how about it is never ok to hit another person? janay incited this incident, she doesn’t get to decide to be violent and then not accept the consequences of said violence

janay beating ray up is about as likely as me beating an offensive linemen up, but if i went into an elevator and spit and slapped Jake Long i wouldn’t complain after he beat the living hell out of me

brandon marshall still plays in this league, oh how quickly we forget

Your expecting too much. PFT is a clone TMZ. Both make their bread and butter by sensationalizing and reporting on the misfortune of others. Whenever they can milk a story for all its worth, they do. Maybe they were too busy with other gossip tidbits like Josh Brent, Mike Vick, Josh Gordon, Tim Tebow, literally anybody or anything that can get hits. How about the redskins name? Do you ever hear anything about that on this site?

  30. After further review the ruling on the field is reversed. The player is ejected from the game and is suspended indefinitely.

  31. This is just like title IX legislation that says women get their separate-but-equal (taxpayer-funded) sports teams because women aren’t able to compete with men. Even though they aren’t the weaker sex and aren’t inferior to men in any way. Except when they are.

If separate-but-equal is so great, why not apply those standards along racial lines? Still a good idea?
