Rice’s wife: “How could you do this to me? I’m the mother of your kid”

AP
Even as much of the current anger about the handling of the Ray Rice situation centers on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the reality is that it all started when a man punched a woman in the face.
And new details reported today by ESPN’s Outside the Lines reveal a situation even uglier than the silent video heard round the world.
Three current or former security staffers of the now-bankrupt casino in Atlantic City described a grisly scene, with Rice spitting on his then-fiancee Janay Palmer twice.
One staffer who was at the scene said Rice’s first reaction when the elevator doors opened was to tell employees she was drunk.
While she was coming to, Rice reportedly called someone on his cell phone and said “I’m getting arrested tonight.”
The report states that security footage was given to Atlantic City police within an hour of the incident. All of the staffers interviewed say they were not contacted by anyone from the NFL or the Ravens.
Much in the same way we didn’t need to see the video to know something bad happened, the latest details don’t change the basic facts in the case.
But they do go to reinforce the fact that Goodell should not be the only one under fire right now.

  1. If he had done anything short of punching her in the face and knocking her out he would still have a career. Whatever anger issues he had took control of him and now he is paying the price. Somethings you cannot take back or talk your way out of. You just have to move forward. Winston Churchill said if you are going through hell, keep going. Rice and his wife are going to have to salvage what remains of their lives and move on. His NFL career is almost certainly over now

  2. Roger Goodell has been turning the other way when it involves the Ravens for years.

It’s finally going to cost him his job.

  3. I feel bad for the Rice family. They had worked through this, and had gotten married, and the Courts were lenient, and the NFL listened to the wife’s plea in a private meeting, and were also lenient, and the Baltimore fan base was cheering him in practice, and just as the family thought that they had weathered this storm, BAM!, TMZ releases the video, and now the wife and mother of Rice’s child find’s herself in a situation where she has to RELIVE the whole nightmare, all over again, and this time, with her husband no longer being able to financially support the family.

  4. No wonder Rice was not going to appeal his punishment. God-del and the Ravens management wore blinders through this whole deal. All you had to do was watch the first tape and see the non caring of Ray Rice more worried of making a phone call than to get down on your knees and see how the girl you loved prone on the ground was doing and Rice showed no remorse. Baltimore front office as well as the NFL office should have to have some head rolls over this.

  5. It all starts with the police classifying this as a “simple assault”. The rest is a comedy/tragedy of errors by all vested parties. Lets learn and move forward.

  6. Ray Rice looks like he has a future in Boxing. He can fight Mayweather in the battle of the wife beaters…

  7. When is the MADNESS going to STOP! Lets talk about FOOTBALL and leave the social issues to the news journalists. PFT shouldn’t stand for Political Football Talk. I get it that this is an issue of importance but football is an escape from all the BIG issues of importance in the world. Please stop making following a sport that we all love a social commentary and start helping us escape even if it is only for a short while.

  8. Amount TMZ paid for this video + Amount of website visits + Advertising revenue = PROFIT. TMZ didn’t release this video to do the right thing. They released this video to make money. Just like with everything else their crap website publishes.

  9. Tell me…What exactly is this video showing that we didn’t already know? Why is Goodell the bad guy again?

  10. I grew up going to school with a kid that ended up being drafted as a RB by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1997 draft. This guy was exceptionally quick and talented ever since he was in middle school. The fame he received early on really made him a horrible person. He was always praised and coddled, but he would treat other kids like garbage — sub-human. I think that being treated like some sort of god when you are a child drastically affects your moral perspective for the rest of your life. While it’s shocking to see someone treat their significant other like crap, it’s not too shocking when you consider the environment that likely shaped the minds of a lot of these athletes when they were young.

  11. It is easy to see why the casino became bankrupt with customers of the character of Ray Rice.

Who would go to some business with that sort of behavior being allowed to happen.

  12. When Goodell gets fired, does that mean the Pats lose their three SpyGate Lombardi’s?

Who gets them? The Steelers should get at least one, having been cheated on twice in AFC title games. Probably the Rams deserve one for the illegal walk-through video.

  13. I really don’t see the big deal in this situation anymore… The only conclusion is the NFL didn’t want the public to see the video & were hoping the situation would go away. They are a sports league… they aren’t the police that botched an investigation? It’s their business if they didn’t want the public to see the tape… maybe they did it to protect Ray’s wife…. who knows?

All I know is THE MOB got the result they wanted, Ray is out of football for 1 punch while many other abusers, drunk killers, etc are still collecting a paycheck & don’t forget Brent will be back soon. I just don’t see the logic… People/Dogs are DEAD & the NFL gave them a second chance. The Ravens in the past stuck by Ray Lewis (people died) & Jamaal Lewis (conspiracy to deal 5 KILOS of coke) when they were charged with crimes, yet months after the facts already were out on the Rice case, they threw him to the curb.

I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right, because Ray & His wife have had 6 months to work out their problems … if not for TMZ trying to ruin every celebrities life… Ray would be playing football next week.

Goodell get fired?? LMAO… yeah right… If there was a cover up, he did it to protect the NFL … I think the owners will see value in that. He didn’t commit any crime.

  14. That the NFL did not seek out these witnesses and interview them, or at least get their statements, is almost criminal in itself.

  15. WTF I thought hands to the face was only a 15 yard penalty.

Ditka is right, this game has gotten soft.

  16. Roger Goodell should be relieved of his duties by the NFL owners for failure to lead.

Someone under him saw the video and either didn’t show him or he saw it and lied.

That happened under his watch. He should be held responsible to a higher standard than any player or owner.

The man needs to go. The quicker his face is removed from the NFL the quicker we can move on to football news.

Till then he is bringing shame to the league he represents.

  17. Saddest fact of all:
Ray Rice and Roger Goodell still walk away millionaires. Think about it. Pay me $35M (Rice) and Goodell ($40M) and then tell me I’m not longer welcome. Okay. Twisted world boys…a twisted world.

  18. There’s plenty of abominable conduct all around.

    All along there way.

Each person will get to live through their own little hell.

    And they each deserve it.

    In their own ways.

Goddell’s days as commish are numbered.

He is unworthy of the chair.

  19. Cancel the nfl sunday ticket. Don’t buy merchandise or game tickets. Hit them where it hurts until Goodell is out. Ray Rice was wrong, however, he owned it and delivered an imo sincere apology. Can Goodell do same? He thinks fans are incredibly stupid, apethtic and hoped this would wash over after a weekend of nfl.

  20. There’s plenty of abominable conduct all around.

    All along there way.

Each person will get to live through their own little he*l.

    And they each deserve it.

    In their own ways.

Goddell’s days as commish are numbered.

He is unworthy of the chair.

  21. Rice’s wife: “How could you do this to me? I’m the mother of your kid”

    Rice: “Marry me.”

    Rice’s wife: “Ok”

Fidell Goodell: “The NFL, to my knowledge, has never received a wedding invitation.”

  22. Mr. President 50….not sure what any of this has to do with the Patriots. If you are connecting the Ray Rice wife beating with spygate, you have issues..! People should be pointing fingers at the Ravens front office on this one. They knew and still held onto him. At least when the Aaron Hernandez murder was coming out, the Patriots immediately released him, no matter how good of a football player he was. Ravens need to take note!

    ———————————————–
Ritchie you don’t get it… getting off light, hearing what a great guy he is, the cheers, etc all of that would have insured RR would have learned nothing from this and Janay would have been in the cross hairs of his rage sooner rather than later

  24. With the Cowboys going 8-8 the past three seasons and 136-137 (including SF game) since Barry Switzer was at the big game, I must say it won’t be too hard on my heart to stop watching the NFL. Mark Cuban said it perfectly back in March… “Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered.” and all of you PFT so called analyst were calling Mark and idiot. Oh how the tide turns. Pigs gettin fat and I think Goodell is the fattest one, right next to Jerry Jones that is.

  25. We used to bash Selig mercilessly, but in retrospect many of his “finer” moments now just seem like simple confusion or even mild stupidity. I can honestly say I’ve never thought of him as a crook or liar. Goodell on the other hand, what a slime ball.

  26. Legal commentary is way above a sports writers pay grade. Don’t let that HOF vote go to your head.

  27. NFL suspensions usually reflect the amount of negative attention a person brings to the LEAGUE. Ray Rice got two games because they thought it would be a much less damaging story. But, this story has ceases to go away, and it has actually picked up steam by the day with no sign of letting up. I expect that we’ll all see at least one more person fired over this.

Goodell should resign over this. If he doesn’t (and he won’t), he should be fired. Rice knocked out his lady. It is what it is. Bringing the NFL to a stand still over this is on Goodell.

  28. This is too much now. Okay, the mad did something he had no business doing. But don’t make this the Days of Our Lives NFL Series. Suspend the man, let his family sort all of this out on their own time, lets get back to football.

  29. Could it be that she married him the day after the indictment because she would then be precluded from testifying against him under oath? Perhaps he demanded that she marry him to keep her from being forced to be a witness against him?

  30. Don’t use that word “family” too loosely. When you knock out your lady, that not family that’s battery and abuse.

She needs true help. Nobody that loves anyone would almost kill them. Don’t down play this, professionals have been killed in the ring, just ask Ray “Boom Boom Mancini.

Heck professional at least have soft ropes for their heads to hit when knocked out… She enjoyed a nice steel railing.

What a cute family… STOP IT!!!!

  31. @bestinafcnorth I work with women’s shelters locally. Plus participate in the soma bra program. Have been ever since I dated a girl who was almost set on fire with her kids by her ex. She jumped out of a two story burning house with kids in her arms and broke both legs.

So when I heard that story. I had to help. I will forever work with these groups. And I hope the ray rice situation draws more to work as well.

  32. We used to bash Selig mercilessly, but in retrospect many of his “finer” moments now just seem like simple confusion or even mild stupidity. I can honestly say I’ve never thought of him as a crook or liar. Goodell on the other hand, what a slime ball.

What does Roger Goodell have to gain from purposely covering up for Ray Rice? Are you an idiot? How is he a crook or a liar? People have mush between their ears.

  33. Goodell is helping make this entire mess even worse, if that’s even possible. Rice SHOULD be banned for life from the NFL, but then again so should Michael Vick, yet the entire NFL and loads of fans welcomed back that piece of human crap, so why should anyone be surprised the NFL are lying about this mess, the NFL, The Ravens all knew how bad this was, yet covered it up. The fans gave Rice a standing ovation during the first pre-season game, this shows the disconnect between what is right and what really runs this entire mess, money.

  34. At what point do you realize you’re not embarrassing Ray Rice anymore you’re embarrassing his wife after she already released a statement that she’s embarrassed and wants privacy. Its not even about Janay and what she’s gone through anymore nor the other women that suffer from domestic violence. At this point, its about clicks and thumb UP’s.

  35. they’re both pieces of garbage. how could ray rice do this? how could you marry him afterwards. morons all around creating more moron children

  36. If you look up the definition of the word worthless cowards you will find both roger goodells face along with that petulant coward ray rice how could he do that to his own wife he should never be allowed to play football again#whatapieceofcrap

  37. First and fore most law enforcement should be the first to have heads rolled.
The NJ. DA. is at the forefront of jobs that should be canned.

  38. My question to her is how can you stay with a man who clearly doesn’t care about you or the child in question, he doesn’t care about her, if he did this would not have happened in the first place or he wouldn’t as a man allow himself to stay married to her, but she would probably stay regardless because in that moment when she came to, she should have left him right then and there, but no, time passed, he manipulated, she justified it in her mind and accepted it, go read her statement about this situation, she justifies and supports this, she deserves whatever now, she’s in complete denial and is too stupid to see the truth, sad state of affairs, hopefully she’ll get it one day

    ————————————————

Are you kidding me? He’s made 25 million dollars over the last few years. I think the family will be okay.

  40. Of course she married him. She’s all about the money as most women that date or marry sports figures are.
    =========

Ridiculous stereotype. And an insult to all the NFL players who have solid marriages/families and never make the news for negative stuff like this.

  41. I wonder what Robert Kraft will say about the cover up. (since he always has something to say)

Never mind who cares what he has to say.

  42. All you so saintly folks that want Rice banned for life donate time and money to battered women shelters?

We’re not the ones battering the women.

    Let Rice donate.

  43. I throw a flag on this being primarily an NFL issue. This primarily is first and foremost a law enforcement issue–and they failed big-time! All this holier than thou nonsense calling for Goodell’s head completely ignores the fact that there is a prosecutor and a judge that approved a no-jail time sentence for Rice and a team that did absolutely nothing until the tape was released publicly. Did Goodell drop the ball? Yes. But his was not the first, nor even the most important in the chain of those who failed to do their jobs from the cops, the prosecutors, the judge, and the team!

  44. And by the way, Ray is perfectly free to get any job he wants right now.

    Just not in the NFL.

So let’s not hear this crap about the guy not able to support his family.

  45. ANYONE who spits in ANYONE elses face should expect to get knocked the blank out.

Rice said and his now wife has corroborated that he had only hit her once EVER and the evidence shows why.

Charges had been brought by the law on both of them and dropped on BOTH of them by the law,no doubt due to a thorough investigation and testimony from his now wife that indicated that they two had figured out they two had messed up bad and were working their way through this and no further legal action was needed.

His team had rendered a punishment for his actions and all parties were moving on.

Suddenly the entire media world is out to ‘lynch the blank’ regardless of what happened before the world saw the video.

His wife has again said people need to leave the healing to them and butt the heck out and the media responded to her message by essentially branding her a liar

The only thing missing here is a crowd of people in multicolored robes outside of Rice’s house telling him to come out so they can hang him from a tree in his front yard.

There was an act of disrespect rendered against Rice by his fiance that gets an immediate involuntary response in about 90% of the world.

Contrary to what all the media experts say, someone spits in your face whether it’s a woman to man or a man spitting into the face of a woman, that action usually gets an immediate physical response be it a punch in the face or a knee in your private parts.

The bottom line here is that this situation was TOTALLY taken care of before the media decided to make it into a cause they could all make money off of by gaining ratings.

I am profoundly disappointed in the actions of the NFL for not having the backbone to support Mr.Rice and his now wife.

This was their business and they had taken actions along with the law enforcement authorities involved to deal with it by them selves.

What the league had done is show just how little courage they have to stand by a man and his wife and tell the world that this is their business and that they are working this out.

And in the process, the NFL’s actions have taken away a man’s living all in the name of lynching a good man and his now wife for political gain.

Give Rice back his job and leave his wife alone.

What you media people are doing to that family now a thousand times worse then they did to themselves in that casino.

And I will repeat this so you can all read it.

In the REAL WORLD-the one where you don’t sit behind a tv monitor to protect you from your actions.

If you spit in someones face, expect to get knocked out.

  46. Ray Rice is the bad guy here.

I find the idea that Goodell saw that film and sat on it absolutely incredulous. He has handed out punishments with an iron fist. Why would he be kind to Ray Rice????? What is the motivation?

I find conspiracy theories tedious. It’s hard to believe all the people involved would shut their traps for Goodell to cover up that he saw this video.

It is FAR MORE LIKELY that what the Ravens president said is true. Hearing that an open handled slap (supposedly) made her bang her head and knocked her out is FAR DIFFERENT than seeing it.

Could the NFLPA be actively pushing the “Goodell is the bad guy” meme to weaken the league’s negotiating position?

  47. I am going to guess that this isn’t the first time he struck her. He didn’t even hesitate or give a “oh crap” reaction when she was laying motionless on the floor. He just went about his elevator ride.

  48. We have a human resources department in the league or on Ravens? This is getting out of hand with the media.

  49. The real story is the behind the scenes fixers that the Ravens employed to minimize the damage.
Casino security employees say that he was immediately on the phone advising that he was about to get arrested.
Who was he talking to at the Ravens? They were immediately in cover up mode, rather than making Rice accountable for his actions.

  50. Am I the only one that has a SEVERE issue with people profiting off these stories? What does it do US to know more abou tthis? The NFL and the media is making this worse by the day and doesn’t even care. Janay’s statement was completely on point when you read headlines like that.

You’re not helping Ray (which is fine), and you’re definitely not helping HER..the victim.

  51. The TMZ Sports video was shot off a video monitor with a cellphone camera, one former staffer told “Outside the Lines.”

    ——————————————————
This clears up a lot of previous ambiguities.

  52. Yes, TMZ broke a relevant NFL headline – that doesn’t mean you have to join them in the gratuitous scandal business. Leave the gory, prying headlines to the tabloids.

  53. @richiethegreek – if the Eagles get one of the Pats’ SpyGate Lombardi’s after Goodell is fired, then that means the Rams don’t get one for the illegal walk-through video. You have to give the Steelers at least one for being cheated on in two AFC title games. Which means the Panthers get the other one, though they hardly seem to deserve it. Maybe that one should go to the Colts – the Pats cheated on them in multiple playoff games as well.

  54. “worknman24hours says:
    Sep 10, 2014 8:09 PM
ANYONE who spits in ANYONE elses face should expect to get knocked the blank out…”

I really hope you’re just trolling. No man that big ever needs to hit a woman that small, short of having your life threatened. Even if everything you say is 100% true, he literally could have killed her over spit. That’s pathetic and he’s no man.

  55. Players hate Roger Goodell because he’s tough with fines and suspensions.

Fans hate Goodell because he’s the commissioner that is in charge as fears of injuries, concussions and loss of star players dictate leaving “real” football.

Owners love Goodell because he is their guy. And America hates rich, corporate America. So Goodell is hated for that.

Roger Goodell has, by most other instances, a principled man. If it were anyone else who didn’t punish Ray Rice enough, the calls for his head would be very low.

    This is all ridiculous politics.

Remember, Goodell announced before this newest video he would increase punishment for domestic violence. I fail to see how he is any sort of apologist or enabler…

  56. I don’t get the last line, like Ray Rice should be flogged to death? The hotel staff should have been more forthright? ACP should have gone out of their way to give the tape to Goddell personally? Goddell wants all this power yet refuses to take responsibility when it’s clearly his lack of leadership and ability to do the right thing here is at question. Anyone who thinks Rice shouldn’t have been punished or done time is not part of this conversation. The commish is at fault here so not sure who else should be under fire.

  57. Lots and lots of “real men” on here chirping about “leave my NFL alone”. It’s a true shame you were never taught any better. He spat on his lady, more than once, then viciously slugged her in the face, he could have killed her. You are pathetic in the worst way if you defend this at all or have ever said “we don’t know what she did”

  58. Listen to most rap songs and it’s all about bitches and hoes. G’s up and hoes down… pimp talk. Most abusers are a product of the environment.

  59. Did some of you even read the article? (I’m talking particularly to worknman24 and juliusevola98) Ray Rice spit in HER face twice…that’s WHY she came at him…with her open hands slap. What part of that do you not understand? He SPIT IN HER FACE AND HIT HER TWICE…THE LAST TIME KNOCKING HER OUT and all you got to say is she had it coming?!!!! That’s such a bs copout! The man is used to 300lb linebackers smacking him and he is in top physical condition but she deserved to be hit so hard she could’ve easily had brain damage or been killed and you defend HIM? BTW, just to say Ray Rice is a known spitter…he spit in the face of Phil Taylor last year and he denied it but others in the league have backed that up. Ray Rice is a common jerk.
