Roger Goodell cancels appearance at banquet for Jerry Richardson

With the stuff that is brown hitting the fan this afternoon, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to keep his friends from getting splattered with it.

Amid reports that law enforcement officials did provide the Ray Rice video to the league in April — which was followed by a “did not” from the league — Goodell is taking the opportunity to stay out of the spotlight.

According to Michelle Boudin of WCNC in Charlotte, Goodell will not attend a banquet tonight where he was scheduled to present Panthers owner Jerry Richardson with a humanitarian award.

Ironically or coincidentally (depending on your perception) the award Richardson is receiving tonight is from a group dedicated to human dignity, justice and moral courage.”

Pragmatically, Goodell needs to be making sure his house is in order, and finding out why he didn’t see the thing the cops are now saying he had every reason to see.

But at least he’s not going to allow his presence to be a distraction on a night when one of his biggest supporters is being honored.

  1. So let me get this straight. Goodell was going to a banquet where Richardson was getting an award for ‘human dignity and moral courage’? The same Richardson who owns the Panthers and is allowing Greg Hardy to play after being convicted of Domestic Abuse…

I really didn’t think it could get worse. I was wrong.

  2. Wow, this is just getting worse and worse.

Either Roger Goodell is a lying sack of the brown stuff that is hitting the fan…

    or

Roger Goodell is in charge of the most incompetent administrative office in sports.

Either way, the NFL will be doing something because as the splatter spreads, you better believe that the owners who, heretofore have been standing solidly behind Goodell, will be the first to push him under the bus.

  3. Goodell could commit murder and his bosses wouldn’t care as long as the gravy train stays to schedule. But if Congress gets interested (remember the current War on Women mantra?)
    Goodell is no longer protected.

  4. From ABC News:

“The Ravens team also asked the hotel for the full video, but were told by the Revel they couldn’t give it out to anyone except someone who was a party to what’s on the tape or to law enforcement, the sources said. But Revel officials told the team that Rice’s attorney had a copy and the Ravens should ask the lawyer for the tape, the sources told ABC News.

The Ravens did not ask Rice or his lawyer for a copy of the video. Instead, the Ravens and the NFL asked law enforcement for the video which declined to give it up.”

There is no reason for Roger Goodell to lose his job over this… now this is getting silly.
    ________
There is every reason for him to lose his job. He lost credibility.

Even if it was a staffer who viewed the video and not him, if that staffer didn’t show the video to anyone else then that happened under Roger’s watch.
Just like when Sean Payton got suspended for a year when he wasn’t the one perpetuating the bounty facade, it was someone under him.

If it happens under your roof, you’re responsible.

This man needs to go, he has become a disgrace.

  6. This is just the first sign of the process… Goodell is good as gone. When the dust settles in a couple years, he will write a tell-all autobiography and try to clear his name.

    Welcome to corporate America.

  8. @Mwatts – the bedrock principle of professional sports is that its fans must be able to TRUST that what they’re seeing is on the up and up. Societal considerations such as wife beaters are important but are secondary.

Fans can’t trust the sport if it’s figure head is exposed as a total liar! Fans also can’t trust a commissioner that suspends weed smokers for a whole year but intentionally ignores wife beater videos in the name of protecting the Shield.

That, my friend, is THE reason why Goodell MUST BE FIRED!

  9. I urge everyone to write the owner/executive office of the team they root for and tell them you will not attend another NFL game, watch one on TV, buy any NFL merchandise or otherwise spend a single penny on the NFL in any way until Goodell is fired.

  10. He can give players fines for wrongdoing.
But can Goodell get fined for wrongdoing?
If not, then that is so wrong.

  11. Irsay get fined 500k and six games for being an idiot because owners are held to a higher standard. Well what is the commish going to fine himself for conduct detrimental because he has to be held to the HIGHEST standard correct?

  12. I don’t believe anything will happen to Goodell because all of the owners love him. I wouldn’t be surprised if every last one of them saw the elevator video. It’s all about $$$$. Even if he did step down,he has enough money to last 10 lifetimes.

  13. Wow, Ol’ Rog is getting a taste of his own medicine. While he revels playin’ judge, jury and executioner over the players, he now gets to dodge the same bullets.

Move your feet, Roger, move your feet…..

  14. Please just replace him with a football guy. Meaning someone who understands it’s history and how it’s meant to be played….not someone whose sole purpose is to make extremely rich old guys even more rich.

  15. When I think of Roger Goodell, I instantly think of him as Tony Montana yelling at the phone right before they send the hit squad to his mansion. NFL owners are about to do him just like that. Jerry Jones with the line “Tony, they found the video underneath the car! I told you a long time ago you…….”

  16. Good bye good dell. Yippee! Maybe the next commissioner will allow things like tackling and hitting the qb.

  17. Who would have ever thought that the biggest positive to come out of the Rice fiasco would be Goodell being on the hot seat.

  18. If Roger has done nothing wrong, why is he cancelling engagements like this where he is among friends.
It reeks of guilt. Roger seems to be making a lot of unforced errors recently and for this he gets paid $44M.
If he was a politician, he could be beaten in an election, but to remove him I guess a majority of owners need to agree for him to be fired.
The Old Guard owners like Mara and Kraft are publicly supporting him but a string of other billionaire owners can probably see that he’s become an embarassment.

  19. It’s coincidentally. There’s nothing ironic about it. Perception doesn’t come in to play–definition does.

  20. That should take care of the questions that would have been asked about Ray Rice, no one will be asking those since Rog isnt there……………………….

  21. Wouldn’t you think the owners would be having a meeting on their hire as commissioner. He is as inconsistent in comments as he is in punishments.

  22. When the real story comes out, it will be stranger than any if you care to believe. Roger is gone by Friday. That bus has been started, her she comes Roger!! Don’t worry, you will be thanked for your dutiful service and blah blah. The rest of us will remember a smarmy coward.

  23. Law enforcement did NOT provide the video. Someone sent it unauthorized. Meaning; someone illegally provided evidence to the NFL AND the MEDIA. Thanks for any breach of criminal procedure, privacy or confidentially laws……it was a rogue employee in the police department who decided the NFL needed to see it.

  24. Mark Cuban was dead on!!!!

Everybody thought he was talking out the side of his mouth about the NFL.

Well, you have a “holier than thou” attitude and “deny until proven wrong” mentality and it’s only a matter of time before things start going south.

Come on NFL… The fans want a change to the “Calvin Johnson rule”, nothing. They don’t like the new contact rules on WR’s, and nothing. They didn’t like the hypocrisy on the original Rice suspension vs most others, and nothing.

Start remembering who pays your paychecks guys. The fans might have a touch of input every now and then. When you act and think you’re untouchable, Mark Cuban’s line starts be closer and closer to reality.

  25. Hey Roger, remember when you marched around the league pissing off whoever you wanted, whenever you wanted because you were untouchable??? LOL!!! Those were the days, huh?

  26. This is all part of a new reality TV show called “No Cred Red”!! Stay tuned for the disgraceful conclusion!

  27. When is the MADNESS going to STOP! Lets talk about FOOTBALL and leave the social issues to the news journalists. PFT shouldn’t stand for Political Football Talk. I get it that this is an issue of importance but football is an escape from all the BIG issues of importance in the world. Please stop making following a sport that we all love a social commentary and start helping us escape even if it is only for a short while.

  28. Time to be shunned with all the Financial thieves… The Hamptons ! You will be subjected to numb minded celebrities like the Kardashian clan.

Hope live with yourself on that 125′ yacht!

While the popular thing to do these days, that argument makes as much sense as you losing your job because one of your kids got arrested for a crime. Unless someone can prove he actually saw the tape, the man shouldn’t be fired.

  30. He’s always acted like a politician. He likely canceled so he could get his story straight before possibly being asked to speak publicly about it.

  31. NFL: Never Freakin’ Learn.

The Legacy: It’s the only place where you’re allowed to hit your fiancee harder than the guy with the football.

Looks like the rules will change soon.

  32. Just a warning to Roger: Protecting the shield looks a whole lot different from the other side of the shield. And now that you’ve become a joke and liability, the owners will be content to find another lackey.

  33. Just curious as to what people believe is the scandal here. Are you mad that he didn’t see it or are you mad that he did see it but then said he didn’t? Everybody seems to be mad about something different but they all are mad at Goodell. I personally don’t care if he saw it or not. He had enough information to act and he did. He later figured that his punishment was too lenient because of public outcry so he changed the minimum to 6 in the future. Now the video is out and everybody is creaming again so the team cuts him and Roger bans him.

The fiasco is not really the poor handling (he admitted that and changed the policy), it is the reaction to the mob. Now, the media and the internet mob know that they can make Roger change his mind if the bitch loud and long enough. Bad precedent.

You know if he takes action against a player (because of public outcry) and that player is later exonerated, the same public will complain that he shouldn’t have listened to them. He can’t win. He just needs to make a decision and stand by it. The rhetoric will go away if you let it.

  34. He’s finished, if he had to hide or be ashamed of, he’d be presenting the award to him and be all out in the open, the fact he’s hiding and ducking tells me he is guilty and knows more than he’s letting on, I believe he’s finished as commish

  35. At what point do you realize you’re not embarrassing Ray Rice anymore you’re embarrassing his wife after she already released a statement that she’s embarrassed and wants privacy. Its not even about Janay and what she’s gone through anymore nor the other women that suffer from domestic violence. At this point, its about clicks and thumb UP’s.

  36. Get off Roger Goodell’s back, the Ray Rice suspension is indefinite and for the entire season….how quickly things go viral in this age of 24/7 news coverage and internet …..news stories and scandals spiral and spiral out of control until everyone remotely named in any part of a scandal loses their job….this didn’t happen 30 years ago…when news traveled slower and did spin and spin..until you are so tired of hearing about it…that you just want the story to go away…

  37. Law enforcement did NOT provide the video. Someone sent it unauthorized. Meaning; someone illegally provided evidence to the NFL AND the MEDIA. Perfectly stated

  38. Roger can run but he can’t hide. And now Jerry has his own problem with an accusation from a former Cowboy cheerleader.

The NFL is getting like a soap opera.

  39. Fans want the game back, the one the commissioner has drastically changed durning his administration. This current Rice event might be a reason for a change. A change hopefully for the better.

  40. Point #1: I think Roger needs to step aside. This is a PR disaster for the league. They active players who are on rosters for domestic violence need to be at home, not on the field!! Yes, you can Google this and see who they are. FYI- Champion Seahawks lead the league with wife-beaters on their roster.
Point #2: Appoint a female commission of football like maybe a former US Senator or judge. The league is tainted.
I really enjoy pro football and hope the league can straighten itself out. Hopefully, the public (us) can raise a big enough clamor that they will have to take the appropriate steps to get this right.
