Jim Harbaugh isn’t second guessing keeping LaMichael James to start season

The San Francisco 49ers kept running back LaMichael James on their 53-man roster to begin the regular season only to release him after their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

James skipped offseason workouts with the team and openly expressed a desire for a new start elsewhere, including asking for his release from the team.

James had just two carries for zero yards in the game last week against Dallas.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Harbaugh isn’t second guessing their choice to see a little more of James before electing to cut him this week.

“We felt like, you know at that time, LaMichael was the player we still wanted to look at, still wanted to develop,” Harbaugh said. “Couldn’t second guess that one.”

Harbaugh doesn’t regret the decision to keep James for just one week – a move that ultimately cost them rookie running back Glenn Winston. James had missed time during the preseason due to a dislocated elbow.

With James’ release, the 49ers have just two running backs – Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde – on their active roster for this week’s game against the Chicago Bears.

  1. Oh it’s a problem. A power running team with a 31 year old RB and a rookie RB only keep 2 backs? There’s a fk up somewhere. And that was probably Winston getting picked up off waivers

  2. Frank Gore is one of the most consistent RBs of all time. And this is his 10th year at. He got over a 1,000 yards rushing in every season but his rookie year when he was #2 to the overpaid Kevan Barlow. And 2010 when he missed almost half the season but still racked up 800+ yards. He’s a beast and it looks like he’ll be handing over the reins soon to Carlos Hyde. Hyde could probably start right now if we wanted him to. He’s looked great.

  3. Baalke is the one who decides who is on the 53 man roster. Baalke has proven that he either hits it out of the park or fails miserably as he did with the 2012 draft. Harbaugh is covering for Baalke and should ultimately be given more control on personnel. It has been quite clear that LaMichael Lames is not a football player and Glen Winston is a naturally gifted athlete. I believe the contract stale mates has to do Harbaugh having more control over who’s on his team and who’s not. In Harbaugh I trust and Baalke I do not.

  4. Idk if it actually cost them anyone. Hard to imagine they weren’t bringing Osgood back first chance they got.

  5. Said Harbaugh “He refused to beat his wife, so we told him we have no place for him on our roster. Gobble-gobble.”

  6. 49ers should sign Jordan Lynch, at least to the practice squad, stat. He’s the kind of an elite athlete this football team needs, not unlike LeBron James or Jeff Samardzija.

  7. LaMichael James is a perpetrator of Domestic Violence should have never played in week one. Harbaugh said he would not have those types of players on his team well he is a lair. James pleaded guilty to DV back in college. The Harbaugh’s are bad for the NFL they both need to go for supporting those that commit acts of Domestic Violence.
