Steve Smith already has revenge on Panthers on his mind

AP

Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith has already played a game, and has another one tonight.

But it’s clear his mind has raced ahead.

During a telling moment captured during the NBCSN’s NFL Turning Point, Smith showed how ready he is for his Sept. 28 meeting with his old team, the Panthers.

After his 80-yard touchdown catch, which included stiff-arming Bengals cornerback Adam Jones violently to the ground, Smith had a message for his old club.

“Hey, if you [expletive] think I can’t play, you’re gonna find out in Week Four, [expletive]!” Smith yelled into the camera.

Smith had already promised “blood and guts” when he sees the team that cut him abruptly this offseason after 13 years.

And it’s obvious that time hasn’t softened that feeling.

  1. I don’t think the feeling is unanimous amongst NFL fans, but I LOVE this guy. He almost won them a Super Bowl if it wasn’t for the Greatest Show on Turf gang. That, and the kicker booted the ball out of bounds after the panthers took the lead on the Rams in the 4th quarter. I hope he goes OFF against the Panthers. It will be fun to watch.

  2. As a Panthers fan, I agree with the above sentiment. He was great a few years ago, but the Panthers were absolutely right in letting him go. His mouth gains more yardage than his receptions do.

  3. Smith is a top WR talent, borderline hall of famer if he had had better qbs. Cam Newton does not lead to all-pro wr numbers. Let’s see what Flacco can do now that he has a top talent, consistent wr.

  4. That is just Steve Smith being Steve Smith. His scrappy personality and style of play is what makes him successful. It’s certainly isn’t his size. Whatever keeps you motivated man, I doubt anyone in Carolina will take it personally.

  5. As a long time Bengals fan and football fan, Steve Smith is a punk. He isn’t borderline hall of fame, he always has been and will be just a mouth. I can’t believe I will defend Pacman but on that play Pacman got beat bad but Smith grabbed him through his facemask and pulled him down. The over the top video looks like a stiff arm but if you watch it from the end zone, he grabbed most of the facemask and pulled Jones down. That’s called a penalty in my book. Fortunately Cincy has A.J..

  6. As a Ravens fan I am extremely happy to have in Bmore. He is a class act and does nothing but leave a positive impact on our team. Every offense needs a player like Steve Smith. Happy he’s in Baltimore

  7. First of all, how was that play by Smitty on Pacman Jones NOT a facemask on the offensive player? He tossed dude like a ragdoll. Either way, Smitty is a grown man, and he has something left in the tank – if you and the anger and frustration then it is a helluva lot worse. Carolina is gonna get it…hard.

  8. He had most of his yards on a blown coverage. Before that, he was dropping balls and getting shut down. And if you think that Sorry Ravens offense is going to do anything against that Panthers D, you got another thing coming Steve.

  9. He should go off on them… anyone who has been on a team that has been very productive as he has earn the right to leave when they want to as long as they are productive…Indeed…

  10. I remember when Smith got shut down in the NFC championship @ Seattle in 06’…He’s got a big mouth and he’s a trouble maker…I hope the Panthers kick the stuffing outa’ him…

  11. He’s gonna be SO amped up against us that he’s gonna make mistakes. We’ve seen it before when he refuses to go down after a catch. The ball comes loose.

  12. As a Titans fan living in Charlotte, I don’t have a dog in this hunt. That said, I love football so much that I did attend some of the Panthers’ training camp and do listen to quite a bit of Panthers sports talk. My point is this: Steve Smith has been replaced. The Panthers were hoping Kelvin Benjamin the rookie would be as good as the declining Steve Smith was last year. Benjamin as it turns out is already quite a bit better than Steve Smith has been in years.

  13. “Which included Steve Smith *face-masking* Adam Jones to the ground…” I respect Smitty, but let’s keep it real, that was clearly a face mask to everyone but the biased refs.

  14. That was an impressive play but it probably should not have been a TD. He grabbed the defender and threw him to the ground.

He is very intense and can still play. His problem is he is the biggest hothead in the league and he fades during the season. I probably would have kept him one more year but I see why they didn’t

  15. Hahaha. Now I know why other fans didn’t like him all those years. Oh well. That’s Steve. Front office still made the right decision in having him walk. Wasn’t about your play Steve, but because of things like this. Don’t get me wrong. I loved it, but it was an enormous burden on young players-especially the WRs you were supposed to mentor.

Panther Nation still loves you though 89, and when it comes time to knock you off your feet Week 4, we’ll love doing that too.

Right now though we’re focused on Week 2 and I suggest you should be as well..

Yeah just like Manning, Montana, Emmitt, Rice…
What im saying is that this is the business. Just doesn’t work that way every time. I love 89, I really do, but he kinda sounds like an angry ex girlfriend with this. I mean he wasn’t even playing Carolina and he is still thinking about them.

  17. pound for pound the toughest man in the league.

    Dude is a beast.

    need more convincing?
how about a 35 td reception that lead to a broken arm collision at the 2..
    kid dynamite

  18. You mean that facemask that was somehow missed?

I respect Smith’s toughness but the dude has always been a ticking timebomb. I guess he is in the right profession then. I just had to see what his life is going to be like after football if he can’t somehow shut it off.

Yeah I remember that game. It was the first time 2 NFC teams played for a Super Bowl…

Smith is an idiot, but…..man that was an awesome stiff arm. Jones thought he had him and he tossed him aside like a rag doll.
    ======================================
Dude..that was no stiff arm at all. That was a facemask which should have been a 15yard penalty and no TD! Just as someone else mentioned above, Smith’s a punk! He’ll be on bed rest and Celebrex by the middle of the season. Book it!

  21. Damn Steve I rock with you homie. I know your worth. Glad you’re boomin’ off elsewhere. Hope you get off against the Panthers also, just gotta take the L with your stats. No hard feelings. One of the best to do it.

    Panthers fan

  22. Man. Big-time, long-time Panthers fan. But. I’ll never forget the day someone said,”Hey, didja hear they’re trading Steve Smith?” DO WHAT??? I’m not a member of management, but you don’t trade the spark plug of a championship team. Still can’t even talk about it without getting steamed. Good luck, Steve. Miss you, man.
