Ray Rice supporters still evident at Ravens game

AP

The Ravens offered a trade-in program for Ray Rice jerseys, a good call after he was released and suspended indefinitely for punching his wife in the face.

But some Ravens fans — including several women — were still proudly wearing them last night.

Via the Associated Press, there were still a number of Rice jerseys evident in the crowd, despite the domestic violence charges which have at least for now ended his NFL career.

There’s two sides to every story,” said Racquel Bailey, a 23-year-old waitress from Baltimore. “I saw the video. That’s their personal business, and it shouldn’t have affected his career. I don’t agree with domestic violence, but she’s still with him, so obviously it wasn’t that big of a deal. Everyone should just drop it.”

Of course, any study of abuse will tell you that victims often stay with their abusers, and will forgive them under the notion that they’ll never do it again (which often proves untrue).

There seemed to be a mix of reactions to those supporting the former Pro Bowl running back.

“You support a wife-beater!” one female fan yelled at male fan wearing a Rice jersey before the game.

“I took the bus here, so people were, like, ‘Good, I’m glad to see to someone out here showing support,'” said 18-year-old Gage Friend, 18. “But I’ve also seen a lot of people giving me dirty looks and people saying stuff to me like, ‘I can’t believe you’d wear that. Don’t you know what he did?’

“Yeah, I’m pretty aware of what he did. And, yes, it was awful and it was definitely a mistake on his part, but he deserves a second chance. . . . People have done so much worse in this league.”

Sure they have. Some were even implicated in murder trials, and obstructed justice.

They get statues.

  1. I bet quite a few of the fans wearing Rice’s name couldn’t trade in the jersey because they bought cheap knock offs and it’s the only Ravens jersey they have.

The quotes in the article scary though. I can’t believe people are that ignorant.

  2. So a 23 year old and an 18 year old wear Rice jerseys. The 18 year old reports that lots of other fans gave her a hard time about it, and the story as reported here is that Ravens fans still support Ray Rice.
It’s so convenient to have completely sized up an entire fanbase this way.

  3. Well it is pretty bad that the outrage has gotten so bad that the media and nfl are actually turning Rice in to a victim. If this has shown us anything it is that domestic violence has never been taken seriously enough. It should not take a video to understand what it is and how serious it is. Really makes me sad to see Ray and Janay treated like this when I know this can not be the worst that has happened. If this is what it takes for domestic violence to be understood or taken seriously than I guess it is worth it, but it always makes me sad when one person gets railroaded with an entire cultures problems.

  4. I was at M&T last year when the Packers went. Fans were decent, but boo’d every time the Ravens did poor. I was shocked, thought they were better fans.

    Supporting Ray Rice is gross.

  5. The morning news showed a woman wearing a Rice jersey saying that if a woman hits a man, he can hit her back.

I’ll agree that women have come a long way but there’s still a long way to go.

  6. As a Pats fan, I want to complain but I can’t. Because, there were idiot Patriot “fans” outside the courtroom “supporting” Aaron Hernandez. I hope real Ravens fans understand just like real Patriots fans understand.

  7. Is anyone surprised by this? It’s not as if the fan base of the Ravens has ever had moral objections when it comes to supporting their players. I find it most troubling that any woman, especially a young 23 year old, thinks that it’s acceptable for a man to literally knock out his fiance and get a second chance. What’s he going to do next time he’s mad? Kill her? We have a serious societal problem when it comes to accepting physical abuse towards women.

  8. I agree, this isn’t, technically, the public’s business; however, call me old fashioned, but I was raised to never put your hands on a woman- regardless of circumstance. After seeing the video, I just can’t bear to support any aspect of this guy, or those who still support him. I’d like to be a father some day, and I think I just keep seeing it from that perspective.

  9. The other quote from Racquel Bailey that was omitted was probably “hey, I’ll let a NFL player beat on me if he will marry me, just as long as there is guaranteed money on the table”

  10. Have the pft commenters taken over the site here?

Seems like the articles are all just a bunch of trolling now. Ya Rice messed up big. You’ve written 8482047 stories about it in the last few days. As much as i hate to say it, i think it’s time to quit dogging Rice. He has paid for his mistakes now. He lost his job. He is all over the news.

Make Janay out to be the victim all you want. She has let go of it and the media hasnt. Does that mean y’all are like a victim too?

Violence is an issue in the NFL. The league has allowed it. Write stories about how the league could change and how it could change. You know, instead of beating a dead horse.

  11. Once again Darin Gant vilifying an entire fan base due to the actions of a few. I stopped wearing my Ray Rice jersey BEFORE the video, so why don’t you write an article about me and the other 50,000 people that did the same thing. No, let’s write about the handful of morons. I was at the game last night and probably saw a total of three people wearing these. Get over yourself.

I missed your article about all the Panther fans wearing Hardy jerseys last week. Oh wait, you’re a Panthers fan so I guess that’s not newsworthy.

  12. Fans get attached to players. Like an extended, distant family. You don’t throw away a human being like garbage just because they did something terrible.

  13. According to his LinkedIn profile Darin Gantt has a B.A. in journalism. I would highly recommend he return to school. What he does is neither journalism or reporting. He is a troll. He serves no purpose other than that and if Mike Florio has any interest in keep PFT as a resource for NFL news and not an NFL-centric version of TMZ with pundits I think Gantt should go.

Outside his lack of journalistic ethics or respect for the intelligence of his audience he has also shown himself to have zero understanding of the legal system or due process. This is especially concerning considering he works for a lawyer.

Fire Gantt now. PFT has plenty of other contributors who do their jobs excellently and it seems unfair to taint them by association.

  14. Lolnfl

Didnt Brandon Marshall beat his gf a few times? Didn’t stallworth and one other guy kill people drunk driving?

Rice is the scape goat. He deserves any suspension he gets, but much like the bounty scandal and the saints, he’s not doing anything new, he just happened to be the guy who got caught on tape/did it when “journalists” and fans decided to start caring

    America the dumb

  15. Darin Gannt must be a Steelers homer. His pure hatred for the Ravens is like nothing I’ve seen before. What a loser. Anything for an ad-click, eh?

  16. Why would there not be supporters, people realize people make mistakes, no on this Earth is PERFECT! Not even those who are criticizing his actions!

  17. So when i was really young my Dad and mom got really drunk one weekend they ended up getting into a huge physical altercation, needless to say my dad could have been arrested for domestic violence that night. 20 years later i have never seen my dad get drunk again he does drink every now and then but never get drunk, and he has never hit my mom again. My dad said it was the biggest mistake he ever made in his life and will never do it again and if that means he can not get drunk any more he wont because he does not want to lose my mom. People make mistakes and people learn from it Ray Rice made a mistake but to pretty much chop his head off and throw him in a dumpster because he hit his wife is just absolutely ridiculous, everyone deserves a second chance.

  18. Proving that idiots come in all shapes and sizes. They also supported some guy who was involved in a murder too. The people also chose Barabas at one point, too. People have always been stupid.

  19. The great thing about America is that everyone is free to think as they like (which includes wearing the football jersey of their choice). Others are free to disagree with them. So can we just stop talking about this. Who cares who wore what?

  20. Hey Darin Gantt,
It is obvious you HATE the RAVENS and their FANS.

But if you made a mistake, I’m pretty sure you would want people to forgive you and give you a second chance. Ray Rice has been an exceptional character on and off the field for YEARS. He made a “mistake”. He was honest about the situation and did what he needed to do in the eyes of the law to pay for his mistake. Punishments were handed down and that should have been the end of it. But the NFL handled this so poorly, not the FANS, so address the hate where it belongs.

    RAVENSNATION RULES!!!!!!!

  21. The NFL just doesn’t get it. And then there are the knucklehead fans straight off the Jerry Springer shoe that wouldn’t get it even if Ray Rice punched them the same way he did his wife. Damn shame…

  22. some murdered hundreds of dogs and got a special on Oprah’s show and welcome with open arms return to the nfl

I bet if you check the last 10 years I would not be suprised if there have nearly been 100 cases of domestic violence in the nfl.

How about all the DUI’s how many people could one drunk driver kill?

I think what Ray did is horible, I think the NFL looks horrible with how they handled it. Sort of a double jeopardy. The nfl showed their true colors, when they punished Ray for getting more attention. To me it has next to nothing to do with domestic violence they are just afraid it will cost them money and face. If the nfl cared it would have done something in the last 20 years about it

  23. I was at the game and can only remember seeing 1 ray rice jersey that was turned inside out…. Media lies

  24. It seems like Darin Gantt is on a crusade against Baltimore.

I was at the game last night and saw only two people wearing Ray Rice jerseys, and one was a woman who had makeup to make it look like she had a black eye.

  25. So a bunch of ignorant young people, they are looking more for attention then have a relevant opinion

  26. I read an article once that described the similarities between young adults and sociopaths. Their minds have yet to develop the capacity to feel empathy for anyone outside of their close circle of friends/family… I have to believe those people wearing Ray Rice jerseys are almost exclusively young.

  27. Unfortunately, this ridiculous, media-hyped, overblown witch hunt is going to make people that otherwise wouldn’t be, sympathetic to Ray Rice.
I obviously believe there is no place ANYWHERE for domestic violence. I also believe the punishment was too light, especially by law enforcement. But the media, specifically this site, has been so absurd in the coverage of this – that even I am now feeling sorry for this guy and I shouldn’t be.

  28. Wearing a ray rice jersey does not imply you support his actions, even if a woman is wearing it.

Some people in this world are capable of accepting what he did is terrible, yet still care about him as a person. The world would be a much better place if EVERYONE was capable of such forgiveness, and not constantly looking to ostracize people the minute they make a mistake.

Starting with the media. Darin Gant, the purpose of your piece here (in my opinion) is solely to stir people up, and continue a beating a fallen man, all for the purpose of web hits. I’d say shame on you, but you’re a “reporter” and as such clearly have no shame.

I hope that in the event of adversity in your life, people show more compassion than you have here. At what point is this man beaten down enough, and allowed to start putting the pieces of his family back together? Perhaps we should just string him up and hang him now? Please advise….

  29. I am going to say something controversial here and I know this is a forum to talk football, more so than social issues so I apologize, if I have violated anything here.

What Rice did was absolutely horrible and disgusting. He deserves a suspension and punishment which he is receiving. Domestic violence is a real problem in this country and it happens far too often. But some people calling for a permanent ban, I think are being ridiculous. His wife has chosen to forgive apparently. You and I don’t honestly know why. We can speculate all we want, but that is between both of them. He should be suspended a year but a permanent ban is too much. I am not trying to be disrespectful to women or the issue at hand, but people deserve a chance to learn and change. I have heard people say once an abuser, always an abuser. That is absurd. Yes some people will continue to make the same bad choices, but not all. Rice should seek help but be given a chance to change his life. I think most people are entitled to that at least once.

Also, let’s not forget and I am not saying this is the case here at all, but some women abuse men as well. I mention that for this reason, if we are going to have an open dialogue on this issue we need to cover all of it. A man should not hit a woman, but a woman should not hit a man either. Wrong is wrong.

Regarding Commissioner Goodell’s role, it is hard to know what to believe. It does seem to be somewhat of a cover-up but there is always a slight chance he honestly didn’t know. Not knowing what is going on concerning your league is definitely a concern and at the very least naive, but being naive is not a crime. We need to see how that plays out.

  30. This article would not even make a good comment about an article here. The high horse your on is only showing a view from the rear.

  31. It’s just sad with the amount of ignorance from people regarding this. Even if you support him, don’t wear his jersey. Talk about tasteless and classless.

  32. As I read Twitter last night, it was amazing how 99% of the tweets I saw were calling those people in the picture with #27 jerseys on things like “Idiots”, “Low-lifes”, “That’s their IQ” I believe is what Keith olberrman wrote. And there was a couple people defending their right to wear them and have their opinion and saying he deserves a second chance who were just ripped and bullied down by the 99%.

I believe the media’s head would have exploded if Janay Rice had tweeted the picture with “Thank you for the support you guys!!” tweet. What would they have done considering that it’s “victim blaming” if you fart around Janay Rice these days.

  33. “I don’t agree with domestic violence, but she’s still with him, so obviously it wasn’t that big of a deal.”
    =============

Of all the things I’ve read and seen in the wake of this story, it’s this quote that made me feel sick to my stomach. It is such a terrifying attitude to have.

I truly hope that Janay’s reasons for staying with Rice have nothing to do with fear, and I truly hope that for Rice, this was an isolated, awful moment where he lost control that will never happen again. I really want that to be the case here.

But think of how many other times there have been horrible stories in the news about someone who was abused, tried to leave, and how them trying to get away from their abusive situation triggered even deadlier violence against them, or their children, or other members of their families.

And it isn’t always male-on-female domestic violence, though that’s the most predominant.

You just CANNOT assume it’s “obviously not a big deal” and figure if the situation was really that bad, they’d just leave. Don’t brush it off, don’t minimize it. Ever.

  34. What would you expect from these women from Baltimore? Where it is acceptable to beat women, knock them out, and to obstruct justice from a double homicide case which is still unsolved.

Mark your calendars for the unveiling of the Ray Rice Statue coming to M&T in the near future.

Philadelphia has Rocky and Baltimore has the Rays

  35. The idea that you media members can’t force everyone to think like you really pisses you guys off. We can feel whatever way we want like it or not.

  36. Are you guys surprised? THOUSANDS of women sent Ted Bundy love letters while he was in prison. Ray Rice looks like a boy scout compared to him.

  37. While I think that a life-long ban hard – stance is harsh I’m not opposed to it if there is no true contrition by the abuser. It’s gonna be really hard for a new team to trust him upon a return though. Not to mention the affects of being out of football for an extended period of time as it concerns his conditioning. Saying all that I then say this. …..I wouldn’t want him in any locker room I was in. How can you respect a man that hits a woman?…. let alone the woman he loves and intends to marry?

  38. These Ray Rice fans make me feel ashamed for EVER feeling sorry for them when the Colts moved to Indy. Pathetic, misguided morons who don’t deser

  39. These Ray Rice fans make me feel ashamed for EVER feeling sorry for them when the Colts moved to Indy. Pathetic, misguided morons who don’t deserve a franchise.

  40. This wouldn’t happen only in Baltimore. I am sure if Ray Rice was on every other team in the NFL that there would be a small group of people supporting him.

  41. This article was going to be written even if only one person showed up in a Ray Rice jersey. I was at the game, and I counted 5 RR jerseys. Far far far less than the game on Sunday vs the Bengals (I was there, too). Enough already. If you care about ending domestic violence, then do something constructive. These sensationalist articles do nothing but generate clicks. I’m sorry I was one of those clicks.

  42. “Some people in this world are capable of accepting what he did is terrible, yet still care about him as a person. The world would be a much better place if EVERYONE was capable of such forgiveness, and not constantly looking to ostracize people the minute they make a mistake. ”

I think there is a time to say that an offender has served his punishment, attempted to make amends, and deserves a second chance.

And then there are Baltimore Ravens fans who gave this wife beater a standing ovation and now continue to trivialize domestic violence by wearing his jersey and supporting him just days after that horrific video was released. Big difference.

  43. You people calling Ray Rice’s actions a “mistake” haven’t really thought through. He didn’t trip in the elevator, with his fist accidentally bumping into her face. He knocked her out, deliberately and intentionally. This is a world-class athlete, stronger and more powerful than most of us can even imagine, and he deliberately smashed his fiancee in the face. No mistake about that.

Then jut to compound the idea that he knew exactly what he was doing, when he dragged her out of the elevator and there were other people there, he began lying and saying she was drunk.

Then when she regained consciousness, and asked how he could do this, he got on his cell phone and told someone he was going to jail.

He knew what he was doing, knew he needed to lie to try and get out of it, and knew the consequences. There was no mistake there.

  44. Darin, can we get an article on the hypocrisy of one Robert Kraft? Well-timed condemnation of Rice and proclamation Rice will never play in the league again because of the incident. Yet, ol Bobby’s moral sensibilities were apparently absent when 5-time domestic abuse violator Floyd Mayweather was in Kraft’s box. Kraft couldn’t get enough, smiles and hugs for ages. Story?

  45. It is too bad the main page does not say who each article so that I can be more careful about who’s I click on.

  46. I think if they got in the ring she may be able to take him. She took that first shot like a champ.

In all seriousness I fear for her safety moving forward. I’d bet this isn’t the first time this POS has pulled a punk move like thatwith a woman based on his (non)reaction to it.

Given the added stress of their current circumstances this could end badly.

    Hope I’m wrong.

  47. I hate homers. This actually really bothers me. Separate the game of football from life for once second. Guy went mike tyson on his girls face. Everyone just saw footage this week. It’s way too soon to be arguing in his favor. Let him serve his time away from the game before you start wearing his jerseys and supporting him. As of now, he’s out of the league, and that’s exactly what he deserves.

  48. I’m getting tired of all this “any study of abuse will tell you that victims often stay with their abusers” stuff. Yes, in situations where someone is systematically abused on a daily basis that is often the case. I don’t see that here. The last thing she appears to be in that video is afraid of her spouse. In fact after the incident she expressed shock that he would raise his hand to her – like it has NEVER happened before. It was two young people who had too much to drink and got into a fight that both probably don’t even remember and now all the self-righteous good people are ruining their lives over it.

  49. Ever since Clinton (for the most part) got applauded for his actions the moral compass in the United States has flat disappeared publicly. When is the last time you have heard the word chivalrous in conjunction with those in leadership roles. Yes we find examples of honor, ethics, morality and accountability in our society but its usually in our personal lives. Like a family member, a close friend, someone we know who sacrificed and served our country , a mentor , such as a teacher or neighbor that looks out for you. The old adage power corrupts plays out time and time again. So when you have young people wearing a Rice jersey its obvious how insensitive they are to the victims with out having a clue. After all if they had a clue (and some will in the future as they wise up) they would be ashamed and embarrassed.

  50. Enough is Enough with this story. I’m sick of hearing about it. Did you hear the announcers last night. “This is the blackest week in NFL history”

Oh yeah sure, this is the worst week in nfl history, not when a chiefs player killed his wife, kid and then himself….

    get a grip

  51. Well I’m currently looking at the Washington Post sports page (front page) and I see two (Causcasian) women wearing a Ray Rice jerseys with a sign on the rail that says FORGIVE! I watch the news because I am local, in DC, and I saw women wearing jerseys on the news and basically saying the same thing.

    From the Post…
On Thursday morning, though, Baltimore resident Kathi Bessling pulled on her Rice jersey and outfitted her three daughters in the No. 27, too. To Bessling, Rice was more than the man who punched Palmer, now his wife; he was a man her children and their friends had once looked up to, a man they cheered for in a Super Bowl win two seasons ago, a player who had rewarded them with three Pro Bowl seasons. Does that just disappear because of one incident, one video? It did not for many of those wandering the walkways Thursday. “He’s still a good guy,” Bessling said, standing near the statue of Lewis, another former Baltimore luminary with a complicated past. “I just feel like the Ravens are being targeted.”

  52. Of course, actually most of these good people posting their indignation are probably fans of the other AFC North teams and really could not care less about domestic violence.

  53. Where’s the hate for Janay? She spits in the face of, slaps and punches her fiancee and we’re all supposed to hate Ray?

I think he just couldn’t rake it anymore.

  54. The trouble I have with the supporters of Ray Rice, really have to do with the argument they make.

Normally, they say something like, “Well, she stayed with him, so who am I to judge?”

Well certainly in that case, you would not judge Rice’s wife. She got punched, decided it was okay, and was so okay that she needed to marry the person who knocked her out in an elevator. Strange, but you know, who AM I to judger her.

But saying you’re OK with Rice becuase his wife forgave him makes little sense to me. I’m not okay with someone who punches he wife. You have to be a pretty bad/messed up dude to even get to the point of thinking about doing that to anyone, let alone your wife.

When you wear a Rice jersey, you support what he did, and who he is. Until he shows that he is rehabilitated, and some time goes by that proves that, i’m surprised how easy it is for people to support violence in any form against another person.

If you think the league has persecuted him unfairly, that’s fair. I wish the league would feel more repercussions. Has nothing to do with showing up to a game wearing a jersey though. That’s just stupid.
People amaze me on a daily basis.

Well, they did beat the steelers like rice on wife….

I believe it’s “wife on rice”.

    Nonetheless, stellar effort.
    ================================
No, I meant it exactly as I typed it. Don’t change the joke if you don’t get it.

  56. Baltimorons.

Obviously these people don’t understand etiquette and image are paramount for corperate enterprises because they probably don’t have jobs!

Or if they do, they probably get paid minimum wage at a dive bar to get punched in the face by the patrons so they are perfectly fine with getting punched in the face.

  57. Racquel Bailey, the waitress, has said the most sensible thing I’ve heard on the topic so far. The rest of us are out to SAVE Janay, I think, but she doesn’t want to be SAVED. But, we will impose our will anyway and SAVE her!

  58. These people wearing Ray Rice jerseys are beyond pathetic. They really need to get some help. I equate these people similarly with someone that might want to wear an Aaron Hernandez jersey. Seems like they’re supporting domestic violence. Way to sucker punch your girlfriend Ray Rice! Good job!

I can only hope that anyone stupid enough to wear a Ray Rice jersey gets sucker punched in an elevator and gets knocked to the floor.

  59. disgraceful and disturbing

easy to see how Obama happened; there are a lot of ignorant and weirdo subsets out there that vote and may even make a majority in their plurality…… watching those “Baltimorons” supporting Ray Rice illustrated this quite clearly

  60. And, after we have SAVED Janay, we will forget about her and talk about football again, and she will have a better or worse life moving forward that we will not care about because we SAVED her from Ray Rice.

  61. to all those attacking the “journalist” in this post, have you followed Florio and 3 name guys attacks on the Redskins? seems most of the guys writing articles on PFT are more about their personal agenda than football

  62. As a former police officer and homicide investigator I understand the “cycle” of domestic violence. I have seen numerous cases where the cycle ends in death. It’s not enough to hear the term “cycle”, as it wasn’t enough to see the “video”. The young females have their opinions, but have been sheltered from this part of the violence in our society. Let them work for one of the organizations that are set up to help the victims, and I”m sure they would burn them and change their “opinions.” as shortsighted as they are.

  63. “There’s two sides to every story,” said Racquel Bailey, a 23-year-old waitress from Baltimore. “I saw the video. That’s their personal business, and it shouldn’t have affected his career. I don’t agree with domestic violence, but she’s still with him, so obviously it wasn’t that big of a deal. Everyone should just drop it.”

I hope and pray that young lady never gets to experience first-hand what domestic violence is all about. However, before flapping her gums, I believe she should spend time in a shelter for battered women. Then, and only then, will she understand the reality of it.

It’s so convenient to have completely sized up an entire fanbase this way.
    ————————-

Right, because that’s the only thing that leads to the characterization. How about the standing ovation for Rice in the preseason? How about the MULTIPLE examples of men AND women wearing Rice jerseys and defending him on the record? How about the fact that everyone still showed up to support their DISGRACE of a team, even after it came out that they didn’t pursue the video? If your fan base had any class, they would have boycotted the game until the Ravens took action to reform their front office or until they openly called for Goodell to go. Pathetic, most disgusting fanbase in pro sports. Period.

  65. leatherface2012 says:
can someone tell me, what price exactly did ray rice pay? nothing.
    ___________________________________

You asked the asked about the price he paid…
Well he won’t be getting the roughly $13 million he was still owed from the $35 million contract he signed in 2012 (approximately $10 million in base pay plus up to $3 million in incentives).

And as we all know, football players don’t get paid enough!

  66. How many spiteful, unintelligent, ignorant articles can you post this week, Darin? The bitterness is just so apparent it discredits every article you’ve ever written. Why don’t you do some real reporting and get the facts. The ones that are supporting Ray Rice are a small percentage of people who may or may not have ever been exposed to DV. Way to pick an 18 year old out of the crowd, I am sure he has great perspective on whats wrong with our society. It’s also really easy to find the few 27 jerseys in a crowd and interview them. Why dont you talk to the 71,000+ fans who weren’t wearing them and see how they feel? Oh, and please right an article on how despicable the Panthers and 49ers are. You are awful.

  67. This post is worthless. I was there. I saw 4 Ray Rice jerseys out of thousands of people. The people sitting around me each remarked about how we didn’t see a #27 jersey until the 3rd quarter. And leave it to this author to bring up Ray Lewis every single chance he gets. I think he’s actually trolling us.

  68. For those of you who didn’t read the article it was stated that it was some fans that wore the jerseys not all the fans. Maybe back off the entire fan base.

  69. Janay lost her temper and attacked Ray Rice. Natural instinct is to defend especially on hard liquor where primal instinct takes over. Let’s face it…if Janay was a man everyone would of been on Ray Rice’s side. I thought we live in a world of equality…so it applies in all categories. And whoever calls Ray Rice an abuser is a hypocrite…cuz what Janay’s going thru now is far worse than what happened between her and Ray Rice. She’s not a helpless second class citizen that everyone’s trying to make her out to be. She stands by her husband and her husband stands by her. Kudos to the both of them for staying strong against a judgemental mob of busybodies.

  70. Pathetic, most disgusting fanbase in pro sports. Period.

    ________

Bitter Steelers fan. I hope you are actually a fan of 1 of the 9 teams who don’t have a domestic violent abuser on them.

  71. the scariest part of that video is after he knocked her out he wasn’t concerned at all.

I think the ray rice supporters are also pro wrestling fans. this is real life raven’s fans. how can you support a man that spits on and then punches a woman in the head? I feel sorry for the children that you are raising.

  72. The women wearing #27 probably have been beaten up before. Typical family life to them. As they said in the movie ‘Animal House’ – “Thank you sir, may I have another”.

    Bert,

    Well said.

  74. She doesn’t agree with domestic violence??? Wow, what a powder puff. I wonder if she would agree when someone hauls off and knocks her out? Some broads just don’t get it & I’m a broad……..

    disgraceful and disturbing

easy to see how Obama happened; there are a lot of ignorant and weirdo subsets out there that vote and may even make a majority in their plurality…… watching those “Baltimorons” supporting Ray Rice illustrated this quite clearly

    3 8

It’s great when people condemn entire groups of people because they haven’t condemned specific people with enough hatred. The poster above seems like someone who no doubt likes to talk about Christian values before wishing everyone else straight to Hell.

So a 23 year old and an 18 year old wear Rice jerseys. The 18 year old reports that lots of other fans gave her a hard time about it, and the story as reported here is that Ravens fans still support Ray Rice.
It’s so convenient to have completely sized up an entire fanbase this way.

Period.

Just curious, what team do you follow, that has never employed a player who has done what Ray Rice has done or worse?

  77. First of all, the “murder” trial you speak about turned out to be a case of justifiable homicide. And after Ray Lewis’ guilty plea for obstruction of justice, the people who had faith in him to turn his life around and become an upstanding member of the community turned out to be right. But those of you who were wrong still can’t get weasel your way past it.

  78. Yeah, and Charles Manson still gets marriage proposals, too.We all know there are nutty people out there.

I’m glad that hot chick in the photo above thought it was appropriate to wear Rice’s jersey. First prize should be she gets to ride in an elevator with Rice.

  79. Not sure why so many of you are shocked by some Baltimore fans defending Ray Rice, despite his being confirmed as a wife beater. Keep in mind, these sme fans all but worshipped Ray Lewis, a man guilty of obstructing justice in the stabbing of 2 men.

    You stay classy, Baltimore.

  80. Ravens organization who trotted Terrell Suggs out as a captain this past Sunday, one day before the Ray Rice tape was released. The same Terrell Suggs who has been accused on 3 separate occasions of domestic abuse (2007, 2009, 2011) – Google the claims/police reports, they include breaking his girlfriend’s nose, pouring bleach over the head of his girlfriend and his child, and lastly, punching his girlfriend in the neck and dragging her outside a speeding car with their children inside.

But don’t worry, Suggs is allowed in the Ravens locker room. In fact, if you are appalled by Ray Rice’s actions, you can trade in your Ray Rice jersey for a brand new Terrell Suggs jersey!

  81. Baltimore fans really have their priorities twisted, rice MIGHT deserve a 2nd chance but that’s down the road. Ravens fans- you all have mothers; imagine a pro athlete, your favorite pro athlete knocking her out cold and then go out to practice or a game & people are cheering and praising him, are you cheering along with them? All you supporters are really just saying “it’s ok, she’s ok, as long as it’s not my mom”…real life trumps football

  82. What Ray Rice did was a abysmally bad thing. While there was plenty of outcy among even Raven fans, there are still some fans who refuse to let 20 minutes in Ray Rice’s life define who he is, after 5 years of playing for the Ravens. This does not mean that Ray Rice supporters support domestic violence. It means that Ray has done his mea culpa and he was finished. Nevertheless he was a big and important part of the team.

  83. The only difference between Ray Rice and the rest of the goons in the NFL is that he got caught..how many others have gotten away with it.
There is a culture of violence that these guys have been raised in. It ain’t gonna change.

  84. A few years ago James Harrison and Cedrick Wilson of the Steelers were arrested for DV. Harrison was a star; Wilson a #4/5 receiver. Harrison was supported while Wilson was cut.

Then there’s Lawrence Phillips – how many chances did he get?

It happens everywhere – Fans and management turn a blind eye when they see talent.

  85. We live in society where the term “wife beater” is commonplace for a type of t-shirt. We have a long way to go. The Ray Rice case will advance awareness but the list of athletes who have done the same or much worse is incredibly long. I’d like to see an article highlighting the other culprits (Bobby Cox, Will Smith, the list is enormous), rather than crushing a specific fan base.

  86. don’t know why people just can’t mind their own business. If she wants to stay with her husband that’s on her. If he knocks her out again, that’s on her. It seems to me that people need to worry about their own household before they get into everyone else’s.

Ravens dedicated the win to Rice.

Now we can definitely say there are more criminals at their facilities than in the mob.
    _________
Stupid posts like this make me wonder if anyone on here played sports or ever spent time forging a bond with team mates.

A locker room can easily become a band of brothers. Just because one of them eff’s up, the rest of the team doesn’t turn their back on them.

Have you seen any interviews? Not one player condones what RR did. But he’s their friend and their brother so to speak and they care about him and his family. That’s a crime?

It’s also not a sin. In the most general sense it’s not even a bad thing to do… to try pick up a fellow man who has fallen.

But posts like above say that makes you a criminal I guess. Do you know how stupid that sounds?

  88. I think there a few people who wanted to be on tv and wearing a Rice jersey would ensure that they would get some air time

  89. If your “brother” punched out your REAL sister/ daughter, whatever, are you still bonding and backing up your locker room, brother teammate. Let’s go from the abstract, let’s all forgive, and get down to the real world where people actually think, feel and react. What he did was indefensible. Hope the followup is not a statue dedicated to this teammate.

  90. “Sure they have. Some were even implicated in murder trials, and obstructed justice.

    They get statues.”

LMAO, I see what you did there!! Well done!

  91. I agree this is way outta hand it shouldn’t end his career, O.J murdered two people still played, Vick went to prison still played, josh Brent killed his teammate, he’ll be reinstated soon, get the point, what he did wasn’t all that bad get over it

  92. “She’s still with him” is such a stupid thing to say. Yes, for whatever reason, she’s still with him. Either because she’s afraid, thinks it’s her fault they’re in the situation, or because she decided that him being worth millions is worth the risk.

It doesn’t change the fact that he uppercut her into orbit and she cracked her head on a railing on the way down, only to be dragged and arguably thrown out of the elevator.

  93. As for Ray Rice, this is not surprising….people who have committed horrific acts have always had supporters (e.g. serial killers)

As it relates to the commissioner, is it too hard to believe that Janay Rice begged and pleaded for leniency for her husband (like we often do) and he took pity on their situation. Plus, he had one of his bosses in his ear also pleading for leniency….that was his first mistake in a series of mistakes. I would have felt a little better if he had simply said that when trying to explain the leniency instead of trying to claim ignorance.

  94. If Donald Sterling is force to sell his team because of the secret recordings than Rice should be banned from football too.

Give me a break. Let’s put another spin on this. Let’s say your son, brother, or close friend did this. The exact same thing RR did. Never been in trouble. and then does this despicable thing. Do you disown him? Keep in mind we know of no other incidents.

If you are any kind of human at all, you let them face consequences…don’t be an enabler. But then you help him get back. You still care about them. Some people can’t be helped and I get that. But none of know enough about RR to make those sweeping generalizations.

As for the statue…once and for all, yes. Ray Lewis lied to police about a murder. Then he did say what he knew but he was wrong for lying. No argument there. That initial lying got him his sentence.

Then please, tell me, how did Ray Lewis live his life from that moment forward? I don’t hear you! Thanks to a couple of key people (Brian Billick, Shannon Sharpe and Rod Woodson) he was beyond a model citizen. He’s been mentor and advisor to so many players throughout the league, not just the Ravens. He’s been there for many players.

You all may not like Ray Lewis, his style, or his play. And judging by the posts and articles, this clearly is the case. But he turned his life around. Put that together with god given talent beyond almost everyone and they should do statues for more people that behave like that.

Oh, but once you make a mistake your done right? Good thing all of you don’t live in the public eye…damn good thing!

  96. But some Ravens fans — including several women — were still proudly wearing them last night.
    ======================================
Just a couple of low rent Baltimore wenches with no commons sense or self esteem whatsoever. They’ve obviously never had their own asses handed to them by someone they care about. And to someone elses point earlier, those jerseys are probably 10 dollar Walmart specials that can’t be traded in. Either way, they are classless women to say the least. But this Baltimore that we’re talking about! You guys have officially taken over the title from Cleveland as the true “Arm Pit of the Nation”. Congrats…..

  97. Ray Rice turned his life around? When? How? Talented, yes. Dirty, penalized and fined multiple times, yes. Chosen by ESPN, video game manufacturer, NFL spokesperson, embraced in public by the commissioner – glorified and entitled. Crime does pay after all, I guess. I was asking for reaction if it was your sister or daughter. Not if you should turn your back on your brother. Just to digress, if I’m a dog owner / lover, and Vick is in my locker room, I’m ashamed for my team. How do you root for any team that employs anti social individuals. Maybe Rice is a good guy for the rest of his life. His obituary still begins with reference to his slugging his wife. Whatever bad thing happens to him, going forward, is a self – inflicted wound.
