Adrian Peterson’s foundation goes on hiatus

AP

As further proof that no one quite knows how the Adrian Peterson mess will unfold and ultimately resolve itself, Peterson’s “All Day Foundation” has landed on hiatus.

The message that the organization’s website says, “The Foundation will reengage after Adrian, his family, and staff have reflected on how the current situation impacts the direction for Adrian’s philanthropy.”

It’s a somewhat strange outcome, unless Peterson is in the process of shifting the goals of the foundation toward a cause relevant to his current predicament.

Given that Peterson apparently didn’t realize that striking a small child with a slender tree branch until the child’s flesh had become torn open in multiple locations was not an acceptable form of punishment, maybe the efforts should focus exclusively on making sure anyone else out there understands the limits of discipline.

That’s perhaps the only good news that comes out of this case.  Regardless of what Peterson’s foundation does in the future, more and more people now know what can and can’t be done when it comes to whipping a child.

Maybe there should be no whipping at all.  Whatever the degree, using violence of any degree against a child teaches the child that problems can be solved that way.

UPDATED 6:26 p.m. ET:  The All Day Foundation has posted a lengthier statement regarding the suspension of activities.  “We have taken the Adrian Peterson’s All Day Foundation website offline to protect our charity partners from the continued harassment they have received from the media,” the statement says.  “Unfortunately, over the past few years when there was positive news, the media paid little attention to our nonprofit partners. Now, the charities are being harassed, judged and placed in uncomfortable positions. They are being pushed to make statements and business decisions that are taking time away from the good work they are doing.”

  1. Thanks now you give the ignorant trolls justification for what the baby abuser did in that he was just making everyone aware of the plight of children and what is an acceptable whoopin.

  2. Interesting how juiced up cheating, child abuser adrian peterson hired low character juicer roger clemens lawyer (rusty hardin).

  3. Or maybe whooping your child teaches them what they can and can’t do. Not to the degree of what AP did, but to say all whooping is wrong is an opinion not a fact

  4. I want him to play. I really believe Adrian Peterson is a good person. But with all this stuff hanging over his head and the Minnesota Vikings organization it really isnt a good idea to play him. It will take a massive hit on the Vikings image if he plays 1 game until this situation gets resolved. Problem is it won’t get resolved until the season is over. The vikes may be a bit greedy in playing him while this unfortunate situation resolves itself. But at the same time there are plenty of reasons why he should still be playing for now. The vikes will be criticized enough where we are forced to sit him and it will be for the season because this situation won’t be over for the rest of the season. And ultimately it could lead to the end of Adrian Peterson in Minnesota. The way im looking at it now, Im thinking there is more to jerry jones talking to Adrian Peterson in the off-season this year. They knew this was coming amd ap knows hes probably seen his last game in Minnesota. Such a shame to what could have been a great year. Vikes still have a good team and I think they can still get 6 to 7 wins without ap, if not more than that.

  5. Is every single new morsel of news About Peterson cause for jumping back on the high horse?

This article is talking about a philanthropic organization that Adrian Peterson started….years ago…but keep singing the “He’s a Monster!” tune. The reality of the situation is much more balanced than people are portraying. Drop the Hyperbole.

  6. Pretty simple. If you cheer for AP to be suspended without pay or cut entirely, as well as banished from the league with all his endoresements taken away, then you are taking away his ability to earn.

No more income = No More Adrian Peterson Foundation. It would simply cease to exist. Anyone who is needy in the community and benefits from all the good AP does in the community will also suffer.

Pretty straight forward when AP says they need to consider how the current situation would imact his philanthropy: all the good he currently does for charities and in the community is made possible because of the income and stardom he gets from being a star NFL player.

Keep that in mind when cheering for AP to get booted from the league forever.

  7. Wow, Mike. An actual reasoned, reasonable point about this whole thing. Thanks. Now can we please stop running this story into the ground?

As far as I am concerned, doing that to your kid is wrong and unacceptable, but I can understand why someone would think it would be if it was the norm in their upbringing. That still doesn’t make it acceptable in my opinion, but it doesn’t make the person who did it some kind of vicious serial child abuser like he is being portrayed in the media for the past several days. (And God forbid someone should offer a nuanced opinion about this; they will be immediately railroaded out of the conversation by all of the high-and-mighty idiots jumping at the chance to display their righteousness.) Maybe AP is, and maybe he isn’t, but I don’t recall anything in his past that indicates that to be the case, either on or off the field.

  8. Instead of whooping a child maybe we should just ignore their behavior and hope/pray it gets better. Heck, I’m pretty sure that’s what a majority of people do anyways….

  9. bobby2478….

I’m sure there is another running back in the world who can take adrian peterson’s roster spot and set up a similar tax shelter… AND… NOT abuse children.

  10. My guess is that this indicates that Peterson has been forewarned in private, probably by Goodell, that he is about to receive a lengthy suspension.

The Peterson brand is going dark in preparation for a hibernation.

  11. If whippings are such a great way to teach small children a lesson, then why are fully grown adults protected by law from the same exact treatment? I supervise some employees–ok if I take a tree branch to them the next time they do something I don’t like?

The mouth-breathers who advocate “a good whoopin” as being good for children are the same ones who would have their lawyers on speed dial if anyone assaulted them in a similar fashion.

  12. If Adrian Peterson did this to an adult male, he would be in jail. Why is it any different doing this to a kid? This notion that it’s just disclipline is beyond stupid and ignorant. His son was left with cuts all over his body. That exceeds discipline. If you don’t see that than you’re lost.

If you can’t discipline your child without physically abusing him/her than you have no business being a parent. End of story.

Adrian Peterson is a serial child abuser, but hey, look at what else he’s done! The child abusing thing, no big deal. If I’m running a charity I don’t want Adrian Peterson involved in any way. He’s a pathetic human being.

  14. Adrian could make this whole situation a lot better if he would get out in public, apologize for his actions, talk about the steps he’s taking to prevent it from happening again, and take full responsibility. His sentence would be light, his suspension could begin right away, and people would eventually forgive him. Hiding behind his lawyer’s statements and doing everything he can to beat the rap is not the way to handle this.

It’s a fact. It’s the 21st century. If you don’t know how to discipline your child without giving them a “whooping” than you have no business being a parent.

  16. i spank my kids. still will. as a parent, however, you have to use spanking as a corrective tool-not to do it while angry. Then, i talk to my kids about it and why what they did was wrong. If it happens again, well, then at least there aren’t any surprises b/c they will know what’s coming.

  17. doctorrustbelt……

This isn’t the same thing as corporate big wigs who setup charities as tax shelters. Being a pro athlete, AP has to be very visible in the community and out doing good. Money he gives as well as the time he dedicates to this (and the people it helps) is EXPECTED when you are a famous athlete. If all he was doing is dumping money into a tax shelter and wasn’t out actively benefitting the community, he wouldn’t be living up to the expectations of the NFL or the Vikings.

So you are wrong to say he only does this as a tax shelter (making it comparable to corporate executives who may donate money to charity but take little to no interest in actually helping people in the local community). AP is EXPECTED to care about his local community, and he has always been very respected in this area.

So bringing AP down WILL harm people in the community that benefit from all the good that AP does. It isn’t a “victimless crime” as you would suggest.

You’re kidding right? This “so called” man has made millions of dollars from both the Vikings and from other side jobs.

He could donate half the interest from his earnings and live better than most that comment here for the rest of his life.

If he has no money left from his earnings, that is his own fault. I still say terminate his contract and suspend him from the NFL indefinitely.

  19. If you can’t discipline your child without physically abusing him/her than you have no business being a parent.

    ============================

Pay attention please. AP HAS NOT been charged with CHILD ABUSE. He has been charged with reckless or negligent injury to a child.

That isn’t the same thing as CHILD ABUSE, which is typically much more severe and contains an element of malice to it.

There’s many way to discipline a child without laying a finger on them. In fact, since you brought fact/opinion up, numerous psychological studies have shown that corporal punishment had negative effects such as violent behavior (gee, I wonder why), increased likelihood of mental disorder, educational difficulties, etc. Go ahead and check your university’s database.

  21. This is the story that wakes up all of roger clemens and lance armstrong’s slumbering zombies.

  22. I just think everyone who is playing the judge and jury needs to stop. Its wayyy to early. especially the ones saying he is the worst human being in the world. I mean really? Open your eyes people! This is not something you should be banned for forever. Not even close. There are farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr worse things people do to children out there. Rape murder torture neglect treated like nothing pretty much etc etc.

We should not be going into ap’s life trying to judge what kind of father ap is. To be honest he probably is an above average father in America. Believe that. Hopefully the best comes out of this situation and we can all move forward and forgive and believe Adrian Peterson will come out a better father. SKOL for better days…

  23. I don’t spank or otherwise hit my child because I’m smarter than a 12 year old. I can and do use a variety of methods to teach her right from wrong and I can do so without resorting to physical violence (hitting). However, I am not responsible for imparting this information to anyone else’s child and wouldn’t presume to tell you how to raise him or her.

I am the product of a physically abusive family. It takes decades to evolve beyond that type of upbringing. People shouldn’t have children until they realize that.

  24. He didn’t “spank” his child, people. He took a tree branch and whipped the child – a 4 year old – until the child had open lacerations in multiple spots. This is not “discipline.” It is torture. It blows my mind that there are people out there defending this.

    ———————————-
That’s right, modern parents know how to manipulate their children: “You’ll sit in solitary ‘time out’ until I decide to love you again.” Oh, the psychological carnage! Child abuse!

AD took the punishment too far, but that is not an indictment of proper corporal punishment.

  26. So all off you have squeaky clean histories than. I saw the pics. There was barely any marks at all. Lil overblown. This is America where we are allowed to have dif opinions, dif ways of life. Would I do that to my kid? No but than again I wasn’t raised that way. I was raised with the belt and it sure as hell wasn’t child abuse. I’m sorry but timeouts don’t work any real parent will tell you that. Adrians foundation does tons of good things in Mn. Its nice to know going forward that if you are accused of anything you now lose your job. You guys are pathetic. There isn’t anything better you could be doing? Besides railing against a “monster”. All of you calling for him to be hurt and calling him a monster and psychopath are the ones with some serious issues. I’m not perfect I have flaws so I’m not about to destroy someone who has flaws. We all have them ppl. Grow up.

  27. How come nobody has suggested getting Adrian and his child help and counseling to make the situation better? What he did was wrong and he deserves punishment for it, but destroying the man won’t help anybody.

  28. Really teddy now someone or some entity is to blame other than Peterson himself? He and only he brought this on and let’s let one of these athletes finally be accountable for their actions. Before people forget and start pointing fingers at the media or a Senator count to 15 and each time you do imagine the look in a tearful eye of a 4 yr old crying and screaming because for each second that’s how many times he was whipped. Really sad how anyone can defend him or the viking organization.

  29. I hope all of you realize an having a view on an issue is just that, having a view, an opinion. There are ways people do things, will i or anyone like or agree with them…maybe, maybe not? However, so what…we can discuss his actions, we cant discern his intent. None of us, individuals, media, even a so called jury of peers know him, or his intent.

  30. All this hubbub coming from a generation which relies on half-hearted “timeouts” and “I’m very disappointed in you today” and who give trophies for participation.

No wonder this country is going down the tubes.

  31. I’m honestly shocked by how many pft commentors are ok with hitting a child with a weapon until he bleeds.

Also, just because your own story of demostic terrorism turned out ok doesn’t mean everyone else’s did.

I was never hit and I turned out to be a good person. A good person who thinks its wrong to hit people who can’t defend themselves. If you think its ok to attack a child with a stick and call it discipline then your upbringing wasn’t as good as you think it was.

  32. They are being pushed to make statements and business decisions that are taking time away from the good work they are doing.”

    ———

Awwwwwww… So a nonprofit TAX-FREE organization has to answer to the public? How horrible!

  33. In HS I had a teacher. Brother Thomas Ford.

He would discipline us. My Dad even told him to keep a close eye on me.

Use the wrong color ink, smack to the head. Roll up your pant legs, spend all class standing in the garbage can. You didn’t address him as “yes Brother” punch to the gut if you were lucky.

Google his name and see where he is right now. (Hint: Prison)

Pay attention please. AP HAS NOT been charged with CHILD ABUSE. He has been charged with reckless or negligent injury to a child.

I have a novel idea….how about YOU pay attn! From Wikipedia: Definition of child abuse —

There are four major categories of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, and sexual abuse.

You might want to know your facts before telling someone else they are wrong!

  35. Adrians foundation is going to really show men how to abuse their kids,,,by whooping them till it bleeds,,,,,What do you people think negligent injury to a child is ???? its child abuse

  36. Could the real reason for the foundation going ‘on hiatus’ be that several parents have pulled their child(ren) from day care if the day care is associated in any way with the foundation, so many that the day care is no longer able to make a profit?

Maybe several of the parents are (justifiably) afraid that AP will come in and instruct the teachers how to use corporeal punishment, including switches, to ‘get the kiddies in line’?
