Vontaze Burfict diagnosed with another concussion

The Bengals were unsure whether or not linebacker Vontaze Burfict would be able to play in Week Two after suffering a concussion against the Ravens in the season opener.

Burfict was able to get clearance through the league’s concussion protocol and took the field against the Falcons, only to see his day come to an early end with what the team called a stinger at the time. Burfict missed practice on Wednesday, but he wasn’t listed as having a stinger.

Burfict is listed as suffering from another concussion. Geoff Hobson of the team’s website reports that Burfict began having concussion symptoms after being diagnosed with the stinger and he’ll now reenter the protocol before he can be cleared to practice or play in a game. After a second concussion in such a short amount of time, Burfict may need to wait a bit longer before the green light comes this time.

Wide receiver A.J. Green, who hurt his foot in the Falcons game, also didn’t practice, but said he’ll try to give it a go on Thursday. Guard Kevin Zeitler was in a boot after injuring his calf and Hobson believes he’s doubtful to be on the field against the Titans this week.

  1. The Bengals have to hold this kid out. He’s very talented, but he isn’t doing anyone a favor by scrambling his brains.

  2. As a Bengals fan, I can only hope this doesn’t become a career threatening problem.

Both for him and the curse we have. Every time we have a player who is showing extreme promise a freak injury or life occurrence changes the path of their career.

See: Pollack, Thurman, Palmer and now Burfict.

Please get healthy Burfict. Don’t risk your future because you want to play on Sunday.

  3. After seeing the hit he took (or rather gave) against Baltimore, and then the one against Atlanta this past Sunday I think he needs to shut it down for a bit.

Sad to see already, and if he gets another this Sunday it’ll be tragic.

  4. Was sad the Ravens didnt draft him. Was more sad to see him go to the Bengals. Will be even more sad if he either has to stop playing because of the threat of long term affects or plays too long and experiences those long term affects. Dude is a beast.

  5. This guy is a hell of a player. But unfortunately, I think what makes him so great may also give him a pretty short career.

  6. Vincent Ray is a capable backup. He’s not as dynamic as Tez and not as fierce, but he’s serviceable. And although I’m not thrilled with Maualuga being in there with nobody telling him what to do, I remain confident in the rest of this defense. WhoDey!

  7. I’m not super familiar with Burfict, but if I recall the highlight in which he got hurt, I have to wonder if it is a result of going head-first into tackles rather than shoulder first.

When you go shoulder-first, you see your target and your shoulder takes the brunt, not your neck and head.

Form tackling seems to be a lost art…..or maybe the alternate form that they’re taught has serious consequences.

  8. After being cleared to play late last week, he clearly suffered a second concussion early in the first quarter when he hit Matt Ryan. He couldn’t even stand up without help and the camera clearly caught him with a glazed look as he stumbled off the field.

How he was even cleared to return last Sunday given his previous injury is troubling. The Bengals medical staff isn’t doing this guy any favors by calling it a “stinger” and sending him back out there. Look at the replay, that was no stinger.

  9. 2 concussions so close together……they should sit him for 4-6 weeks. These things are not only cumulative but the odds of concussion increase dramatically when you’ve recently had one.

    Javid Best endorsed this message.

  10. They need to sit him this week and then hope he feels better after the bye.

I thought a week 4 bye week was horrible when I first saw the schedule, but Cincy needs it something fierce right now.

  11. He may be the best LB in Cincinnati since Takeo… Also, Ihave to wonder, was he truly recovered from his first one? Not implying that the Bengals did something shady but was he really fully recovered.

  12. This is becoming a “quality of life” issue. They need to take a serious look at it now before something permanent happens.

  13. I was at this game. He was helped off in the first quarter by a teammate who called for a trainer. He walked like he was a little woozy. Then, a series or two later, he is back in the game. Bengals medical staff should be investigated. It was very fishy. Investigate that, Florio

  14. I hate to see someone injuried like that, but this is good news for the Titans. That dude may be the best LB in the league the last two years. Hopfully this opens up some gaps for Greene and McCluster up the middle on Sunday.

    No mention of Henry?

  16. Another reason why the NFL needs to have all 53 personnel on the roster active for games and extend the practice squad for good. This would allow players to rotate constantly and lesson the strain they place on their bodies.
