Reports: James Harrison to rejoin Steelers

AP

Less than a month after retiring, James Harrison is set to rejoin the club with whom he’s had his greatest success, per multiple published reports.

The Steelers will sign the 36-year-old Harrison this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Monday.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Harrison will meet with the Steelers on Tuesday and is on track to sign, barring any snags.

Long-time Steelers beat reporter Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also reported that Harrison will rejoin the team after a season away.

And on Instagram, Harrison posted a video suggesting he would be returning to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers are in need of outside linebacking depth after Jarvis Jones was placed on injured reserve/designated for return on Monday, and Harrison is well-versed in Dick LeBeau’s defense. The 36-year-old Harrison played 10 seasons for Pittsburgh (2002, 2004-2012), recording 64 sacks. He played 10 games for Cincinnati in 2013.

  1. Might as well hand them Lombardi #8 now! Makes sense in delusional steelerland, lose a young body replace with a washed up has been. He probably won’t be available to play for a week or two since they have to custom make his helmet for that ginormous melon sitting on his shoulders. No playoffs again this season kids.

  2. Mr. Harrison,

LESS than a month ago you said the following:

“My love for my family and the need to be there for them outweighs my desire to play the game. I have missed too many experiences with them because I devoted SO much time to my career.

“My love for the game isn’t strong enough to make up for missing one more birthday or first day of school.”

What changed in less than 4 weeks?

  3. not sure why my post was deleted. It’s pretty valid to point out that James Harrison was arrested for domestic violence and was never punished. his girlfriend called 911 after locking herself in a bathroom in fear of her life. The police showed up and his handprint was still imprinted on her face from where he hit her. Why is it ok that he was ever fined or suspended and no investigation was ever launched?

  4. Well, he knows the system, he’s always in great shape, he’s always been great for the locker room and he’ll be fairly cheap. A lot of people saw this coming at the start of the year, myself included. I remember saying the Steelers would only ask him back if there were a bunch of injuries at linebacker – and that’s pretty much exactly what happened.

    Welcome back, Silverback.
    Go Steelers!

  5. Smart move…shows why you dont cry and say rude things about former employers….sometimes they give you another payday.

Now I hope they make it to playoffs.

  6. Good for Harrison, this can be his swan song. It wouldn’t be right if he didn’t retire as a Steeler as much as I hated him he’s part of the great reality show that the NFL is

  7. Good call. The Steelers could use some more penalties this season. Just kidding, I’m sure he suddenly learned how to tackle correctly.

  8. He was awful last year when he was lucky to even play ten snaps a game, now he’ll just make that Pittsburgh defense even worse. Thanks for the two wins to pad our record this year.

    Sincerely yours,
    Cincinnati Bengals

  9. Steeler fans are in denial that Harrison ever his his girlfriend. To them it never happened and James is a really great guy.

  10. So a guy that once beat his pregnant girlfriend rejoins the Steelers and their fans rejoice. Pot meet kettle.

I think ESPN needs an OTL report on this one.

  11. ” Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Monday.”

The same Rapoport who reported Ben Roethlisberger would be traded at the start of last season. And who never apologized for his made up lie.

How convenient of you to leave out that the district attorney dropped all charges. Harrison had completed anger management counseling and psychological counseling.

Never serve on a jury, sport.

  13. Yessssssssssssssssssss!!!!

    Christmas came in September!!!!

My two wishes of Brett Keisel and James Harrison coming back came true!!!

Now, I have one more wish the Steelers fire Todd Haley and promote Kirby Wilson to OC.

  14. Guess ’11whodey’ didn’t bother to watch the game on Sunday night. Oh well, as bad as Flukeo looked against the Browns we could probably put just about anyone at LB. Understand Pita Weenie is done for the season so we’ll see what the Crows can muster up at TE. Personally, I see no one to challenge the Bungles for the division however under the new ‘flag football’ rules.

  15. Like peanut butter and jelly, somethings just go together.. Glad for James and good for football. James never looked right in anything but yellow and black.

  16. How convenient of you to leave out that the district attorney dropped all charges. Harrison had completed anger management counseling and psychological counseling.

Ray Rice had all charges dropped and he is completing an in intervention program. he has exactly the same criminal record as Harrison. How convenient that you don’t seem to remember that, sport.

  17. LOL -typical stullers fans. when Harrison left team 90% pitt fans said he was washed up blah blah blahhhh because he left and that made him a bum

  18. So based on previous posts, it’s ok to hit your girlfriend if you enter anger management classes and psychological counseling, like Harrison, and the DA drops the charges? How is that any different than what Rice did? Only difference, social media doesn’t have the impact in 2008 that it does in 2014. Both men deserve the same fate.

  19. People can laugh at this news all they want.

The fact remains that the steelers looked like the bets they have in a few years on Sunday. They have the running game going and the defense who played not bad and throttled newton. That is steelers football. If they can stay consistent, look out.

The afc north is an under rated division. The bengals have been playing lights out. The ravens looked good at home against the steelers. The browns are not the worst team in the league.

  20. Out with the new domestic violence offenders, bring back the old ones. If you gave talent, the NFL doesn’t care what you do off the field just as long as the media is trying to get you fired.

  21. Since being tebowed out of the playoffs the steelers have o playoff wins and o winning records, so that means mr Rooney welcomes back a player who assaulted his girlfriend according to police reports. I have to wander how serious mr Rooney is when he serves on this so called nfl independent investigative committee for domestic abuse

  22. HAHA
All the Steelers fans cheering the possible return of James Harrisson. Whats that? In 2008 he assaulted his girlfriend! They did nothing then, cheered him and welcome him back? Hipocrites!!!

  23. Its great seeing the fear in some of these post since Harrison is back with the Steelers. Deebo is back and he’s coming for your teams qb. He’s not in cincy where they do nothing but get to the playoffs and lose. He’s back home in Pittsburgh. A team that actually wins championships.

  24. LOL -typical stullers fans. when Harrison left team 90% pitt fans said he was washed up blah blah blahhhh because he left and that made him a bum

    ————

We were actually rooting hard for both sides to come to a reasonable and fair deal. It sucked to lose Harrison. He spent one season in the 4-3 Cincy defense that did nothing to him. He’s going into beat-mode. Watch it.

  25. As a Bengals fan I am not going to bad mouth Harrison. He was what he was,…. a player in the later years of his career. He was brought in as a wild card and to be a positive influence in the locker room.

I am glad someone signed him, and wish him well except playing us ofc. I do wonder what is left in the tank because he couldn’t get on the field for us, but your not as deep as we are on defense so he will prob see major time for you guys .

And I seem to remember the Steeler fans who mocked James and the Bengals for signing him. I hope those same fans aren’t not crowing about it…..

    He is a good dude.

Oh and LOL at the person who says he was signed to lower the avg age lol

  26. I think its a good move. They should sign Ed Reed to fill in for Ike Taylor. Seriously, on the ‘Inside the NFL’ show he says he is waiting for a team to call him.

  27. James Harrison owns Joe Flacco. How many times has he strip sacked him? James will improve the run defense as well.

  28. Completely understandable to bring James back considering the injuries from the last game. He knows the system. Will be interesting to see how he plays.

  29. they are digging up bones ,just got older. steelers in panic mode already.won’t be seeing a super bowl any time soon!!!

  30. Wait, the steelers are hiring a guy who hit his wife but got off on pre-trial intervention?

Isn’t Rooney sitting on the Rice investigaiton board?

Not a good look, Steel Town, not a good look.

  31. Bengals play a 4-3 he was totally out of position..Now go find a DB to replace Ike for the next 6 games

  32. I’m sure the Pittsburgh Steelers, that model NFL organization, will be praised for welcoming back a domestic abuser to their roster.

    Stay classy Pittsburgh.

  33. IMO, it’s sad to see all the outrage over the Ray Rice incident was FAN outrage, a Steelers/Ravens rivalry thing, not ACTUAL outrage over domestic abuse.

This stuff can’t be tolerated, and this is more proof of the “just win, baby” mentality.

The Steelers are as guilty of it as the Ravens.
