Aaron Rodgers: Offense will be fine

AP

The Packers offense has not gotten off to the fast start to the season that the team would have liked.

The unit has not looked particularly good outside of scoring 28 points in the second and third quarters of the victory over the Jets in Week Two and last Sunday’s outing against the Lions wasn’t good enough in any respect. The run game never got going, quarterback Aaron Rodgers wasn’t his sharpest and the offensive line didn’t serve either part of the attack all that well.

On his weekly radio show on ESPN Milwaukee, Rodgers copped to some poor throws and said that running 51 plays means the offense didn’t play fast enough in the loss to Detroit. He also said that it wasn’t time to panic or look for deeper reasons for the slow start to the season.

“Five letters. R-E-L-A-X. Relax. We’re going to be fine,” Rodgers said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

Rodgers called the Packers a “resilient bunch” and the fact they went from 1-2 to NFC North champs the last two years suggests that there’s something to be said for the patient approach after three weeks of the season.

  1. He’s right. They were facing the best defense in the NFL on Sunday. They should have a lot more luck against the Bears defense this weekend.

  2. Rodgers called the Packers a “resilient bunch” and the fact they went from 1-2 to NFC North champs the last two years suggests that there’s something to be said for the patient approach after three weeks of the season.

I don’t know that backing into the playoffs off a Lions collapse is a viable long term strategy.

  3. The Pack has not looked good so far, and the Lions and Bears are ahead of them, deservedly so.
    But still…
2012: Green Bay starts 1-2, goes on to win the division.
2013: Green Bay starts 1-2, goes on to win the division.
No guarantee it’ll be the case this year, but I wouldn’t start celebrating yet in Detroit or Chicago.
That other place… well, of course they started celebrating back in March as usual.

  4. McCarthy’s Packers always get off to a slow start.
Yet in November and December they are usually going strong.

They have a marathon mentality that seems to work for them.

Difficult to explain their difficulties on the road. 3 of their first 4 games and 4 of their first 6 are on the road.

The Bears secondary is hurting so they may look good this week.

  5. Bears fan here –
He’s right; Rodgers has a very calming influence on his teammates and obviously has earned their trust. I think one of the Bears players said it well by saying they get themselves into the playoffs every year somehow. Aaron is the biggest part of that “somehow”.

The Bears are still finding their way defensively and it would seem their pass rush has improved. But if Rodgers can buy time he can still hurt them. And while the run defense has improved, injuries to the secondary may cause the Bears trouble in that area too.

But Rodgers doesn’t play defense – and despite the multitude of Cutler haters out their, this season;s version (minus one horrible throw in game 1) is VERY much improved.

  6. As much as it pains me to say it, he’s right — even though Bulaga requires a stick to scratch his ear.

  7. The same thing happened after the Bears lost in OT to the Bills…everyone was running for the hills-throwing everyone possible under the bus.

Just as the Bears were fine then, the Packers will be fine soon.

It is a long season, let’s see where the chips fall in week 16.

This weekends game should be a good one!

    GO BEARS!

  8. Exactly the words that you want to hear from a QB who has gone 1-0 in Super Bowls decided by 10 points or less in the 4th quarter……..

  9. The Packers were in the same spot two seasons ago. They just lost against the Colts and out came the critics. The very next week they played against the undefeated Texans in Houston and demolished them.

I admit as a Packer fan it is increasingly frustrating seeing the Packers offense start off this slow but I have a strong feeling they will turns things around.

  10. You are laughable lol,7 points against the lolions.trash o line and garbage defense = dead last in the NFC north.you will lose to the bears on Sunday then my Vikings will blow u away on thrusday.SKOL

  11. We all know Rodgers is a great quarterback. His weakness, in my opinion, is playing from behind.

He just is not “great” in the 4th quarter of a close game. Statistics point that out.

If Favre had been in that game against the Lions, he would have either pulled it out, or lost by 30.

He would have tried to do something to ignite that inept offense- right or wrong!

God forbid Aaron throws an interception though!

  12. Immediately after that statement, Rodgers was on the phone to Braun trying to make amends.

  13. This guy is the most overrated qb I have ever seen. 99% of his passes are 5-7 yards , no wonder his completion % and qb rating is usually so high.

They should of NEVER even been in the Super Bowl a few years ago if not for a refs blown call against the Vikings when Shancio (or however you spell his name) caught a td pass and the refs said no good just to come back on Monday and apologize for that bad call which would of kept them out of the playoffs.

  14. The Bears will win this Sunday vs the Packers, but only because it is a Week 4 game.

Too little too late. The game vs GB that they SHOULD have won happened 10 months ago, and it was for the NFC North title, and of course they lost. On a 4th & 8 play, of all things.

The Bears can never beat the Packers when it really matters. They’ll win this Sunday because it’s just the 4th game of the season.

  15. The Bear game will be a tough one, especially on the road.
Time for some of the usual suspects to step up their game.
Looking forward to the Packers playing another spirited adversary this weekend.

And then finally getting a chance to enjoy their first bye of the season.

  16. The important thing is…the Vikings are still in our rearview mirror…..where they belong.

  17. You have to go all the way back to September 14th to find the last time Rodgers led a comeback win.

  18. The problem with this Packers team than other starts from this team is………

    1. They are healthy compared to teams they are playing

    2. Rodgers is missing throws he usually makes

    3. The defense was a point of emphasis, yet they look worse than before

    4. Lacey is not running the ball very well when there is a hole, and he was making holes himself by breaking tackles

    5. well they are just not playing as a team, not a McCarthy team anyway

This from a Lions fan, that thought that Rodgers would eat us up with our beat up team

  19. As a Lions fan I’m only going to call this a “moral victory” because I know the real test comes at Lambeau in December, but damn that felt good to see them win on Sunday. Especially since I was there in person watching it. Time will tell if the Lions can find some consistency or if they find creative ways to beat themselves as usual.

  20. Leave it to the GB fans/trolls……living in the past!

…..last year we were 1-2 and came out fine (8-7-1, backed into the playoffs, one and out!
…..2 years ago we started 1-2 and came out fine (took 3 games to figure how to stop AP, proud to have beat Joe Webb in their playoff victory)

At least we Vikings fans live in the now and look forward to the future. But hey, listen to Rodgers as he sings R-E-L-A-X — don’t do it – When you want to go to it – Relax don’t do it – When you want to come

  21. 2020lions I agree with all your statements except #3. I thought the d looked improved vs last year. They got a couple picks and only allowed 1 td. Stafford’s stats were pretty bad…

I’d also throw in that the play calling has been terrible this year. They aren’t stretching the field and they don’t come out swinging. Disappointed in McCarthy this year.

  22. You know I’ve noticed that lions fans are much more insightful and much less insulting than the queenies. Why is that?

  23. Why wouldn’t he say to Relax? All he has to do is look at the rest of the division his team plays in. Pure garbage.

Backed into the playoffs by going 8-7-1 while BEATING the Bears to win the division. Of course starting 2nd and 3rd string QB’s for 8 games.

  24. Of the top QB’s in the NFL right now I think Rodger’s is the only one who would say “relax”. Brady and Manning for sure would not be “relaxing”. They’d be extra motivated-not relaxed. Seems to me like Rodgers is losing his edge and getting complacent.

  25. I don’t know why Viking fans are talking smack about that game. Um…you do realize that’s exactly what the Lions defense is going to do to the Vikes, right? Only, with missing Peterson and starting a rookie QB, it’s probably gonna be worse.

    He’s 8-8 in his last 16 starts.

And he’s 34-14 in his last 48 starts, so what’s your point?

We could go back even further, but I think I made my point.

    You trolls better try harder.

Hate to break it to you stellar – but you’re looking up at the Vikings in the standings.

    The Vikings 1 – 1 in the NFC – the Packers are 0 – 2.

    The Vikings are 0 – 0 in the NFC North – the Packers are 0 – 1.

You need to win some games in the NFC to have any chance at all of making the playoffs.

I don’t know what will happen in the Vikings/Lions game. But I sure hope my QB can pass for more than 162 yards against them.

You have the Lions D playing 3rd and 4th string Dbacks – and you only pass for 162 yards???

    Let’s go back further… 🙂

AR was 6 – 10 taking over a team that was 13 – 3 and went to the NFC Championship game his first season.

So, the point is – AR has not performed well in the last 16 games he’s started. His QBR last year was his lowest since 2010 and this year he’s 10 points below last year. He’s almost as bad this year as he was in 2008 – his first year as a starting QB.

  30. Hey look! It’s a day that ends in Y and In Teddy is talking about the Pack. I guess Teddy must be Teddy T, because the Pack is ALL you think about, all day every day.

I hate doing this, but lets take a peek a little further back.
Aaron Rodgers is 48-20 in his last 68 games.
Those would include 4 playoff wins and a Super Bowl victory in which he was named MVP.

It is still true that the Packers struggled as a team in 2008, but not because of Rodgers play.
He threw for over 4,000 yds for 28 tds against 13 picks as a rook.
If Teddy Bongwater even approaches those numbers you will have my attention.

We can keep playing the selective stat game all night, but you’re going to lose, like the Vikes are so attune to.

Know nothing fans for a do nothing team. (Smh)

  32. Alright, not a rook, but as a first year starter, he was not the reason for the teams shortcomings, as you insinuate,in ’08

Rhymin’ my way around you Chowderheads tonight!

  33. I’m a Lions fan, but I think every Packer fan should be asking why they continually tried to run Lacy at that front 7 while the secondary had guys that the Lions literally just pulled off the street…and you have Rodgers at QB. Aaron Rodgers. The front 7 did a helluva job getting pressure, but…focusing on the run was your game plan? Hmmm…”one of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong…”

  34. wafflestomp says:

I hate doing this, but lets take a peek a little further back.
    _____________________

You didn’t go back further than I did – you went in between.

Further back would be 2005, 6 and 7.

“He threw for over 4,000 yds for 28 tds against 13 picks as a rook.”

Big deal. He played so much of the time with the Packers behind that he got a lot of “garbage time’ yards when he finally became a starter in his 4th season in the NFL.

“If Teddy Bongwater even approaches those numbers you will have my attention.”

Teddy, in his first ever appearance in an NFL game in his rookie season (10 for 20 for 150 yards 0 TD’s 0 INT’s and a QB rating of 83.3), has already eclipsed what AR did in his first two complete seasons (15 – 31 for 111 yards 0 TD’s 1 INT and a QB rating of 42.1).

You want to keep diggin’…. 😀

  35. Maybe Detroit, not Vikings would bet on Packers even though McCarthy is coaching in the past and Rogers act is getting stale.

  36. The Packers will be fine. They start slow every year, and they’re the reigning NFC North champions for 3 years.

  37. Rodgers called the Packers a “resilient bunch” and the fact they went from 1-2 to NFC North champs the last two years…
    ————————————————————
They started 2-1 in 2012, but neither the Seahawks nor their ignorant fans will ever accept that. Seattle didn’t beat us, the refs did.

  38. The Packers D finally has a good game, only to see the offence lay an egg. I know that the best offence is a balanced offense, but there are exceptions. The Lions have a great run stopping front seven but their backfield is suspect, especially after their recent injuries. This was not the game “to establish the run” first. You attack the other teams main weakness relentlessly, early and often. The balanced offence could have waited one more week, when we finally face a defense that isn’t a top five run stuffer.

  39. Unless I am mistaken (sure), those are the exact words (“Relax, we’re going to be fine”) Napoleon spoke to his troops at the start of the Battle of Waterloo: ‘Détendez-vous, nous allons bien.’

You’re probably, right, Aaron, but if the losing does continue (The Lions?), you just want to make sure you bring the dog in at night (See; Devine ’74).

  40. Leave it to idiot fans from a terrible team to make fun of the Packers for losing in the first round of the playoffs two years in a row. You’ve made the playoffs three times in the last 10 years and were one and one twice. The other year you had to rent our old QB to even be relevant!

  41. Some people might say it’s high time that some other team won the NFC North after this latest stretch of Packer domination.

However, that is still very unlikely. These Packers always find a way.

  42. Good lord; can we ban the Vikings’ trolls from making stupid comments on literally everything related to the Packers?

At least Bears fans are respectful and understand our long rivalry, and don’t relegate themselves to cheap shots about us being soft (yeah, you break your collarbone and tell me how long you’re out of work for).

This week’s game is going to be a lot of fun and a massive necessity as far as winning goes for either team. That’s what I wanted from this week, not some stupid Vikings meltdown trying to protect Teddy Bridgewater because if he does bad, then “they’re just prepping him for when it really counts,” which is obviously the offseason, which is the only time the Vikings ever win anything.
