Chad Greenway to miss his first game in eight years

AP

One of the most durable linebackers in the NFL needs a day off.

Chad Greenway, the Vikings linebacker who has played every game since 2007, has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Falcons. It will break a streak of 115 straight regular-season games and 90 straight regular-season starts, the longest of any linebacker in the NFL.

Greenway has both a broken hand and a broken rib and hasn’t been able to practice at all this week.

The 31-year-old Greenway was the Vikings’ first-round pick in the 2006 NFL draft. He missed his entire rookie season after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason, but he hasn’t missed a game since then. He’ll be in an unfamiliar position on Sunday, on the sideline in street clothes.

  1. Chad Greenway has been and will again be an outstanding player for the Vikings. More importantly, he’s the type of human being that all NFL players should aspire to be. An NFL roster with 53 players of his ability at their respective position with his integrity and moral compass may not dominate the league but would certainly make its faithful proud.

  2. Gerald Hodges has shown some flashes this season. I’ve been sick of Greenway since 2011 because he can’t cover and he misses too many tackles for a guy who gets paid as much as he does. Get better soon, though.

  3. As a Packer fan, I truly admire this guy. The Packers took AJ Hawk in the same draft, and I hate to admit it, but Minnesota definitely got the better linebacker…

  4. Ponder… Thielen…. Banyard…. Let’s go!

That’s a joke, but given this rash of injuries, we’re going to be down to that pretty soon. Gonna be a loooong season, I’m afraid.

Of course, the blow is softened a bit by watching the Packers suck wind!

  5. vikesfan is right

He’s slowed down a lot, cant cover and whiffs on a lot of tackles YET still leads the team in tackles year after year after year so idk what I want.

  6. If you listened to Zimmer this week he also missed last Sunday. Look on the bright side Viking fans. I haven’t seen Poet for a long time. I still have a gut feeling that guy is a packer fan trying to be funny.

We are all going to find out what kind of coach Zimmer really is with the early roadblocks he is facing.

  7. Yeah seals1 I agree, Poet is probably a PACK fan in disguise. Drives me nuts when people pose as fans of another team. SMH.

Anyways, Greenway is a nice player. You’re Vike’s are going to miss him. See you next Thursday – GO PACK!

  8. Numba #1 is hilarious.

Greenway is a great player, sad to see his streak end.

Zimmer, considering the roadblocks he’s facing, should be coach of the year.
The difference in the defense is as tangible as it is amazing.
    Go Vikes!
    Go Zim!
    SKOL!

Is there a reason you want to face a depleted Vikings team? Something you worried about?

  11. Wait a minute….you mean to tell me serious injuries cause good players to miss games!!!????!! That can’t be. You trolls told us differently. Go have a hamburger. You won’t live long eating your own words all the time.

    ……….
Broken hand and ribs = serious injuries.
Broken thumb = not serious injury.

Chad has played in every game since the start of the 2007 season. That’s 115 straight games.

Goldilocks hasn’t played a full season since the end of the 2009 season and his current consecutive game streak is 3.

If it weren’t for the broken rib, Chad would be playing this weekend. He played with the broken hand last week.

    ………….
Chad is a South Dakota farm kid who grew up with a work ethic and a backbone.
Goldilocks is a California surfer kid who grew up on the beach, living on daddy’s NFL money.

  15. 52lightsxout52, you may want to compare stats before jumping to conclusions. If you look at sacks, AJ Hawk has 28% more. If you look at passes defensed, AJ Hawk has 7% more. Interceptions, equal number. Hawk is younger, only 30.

Unfortunately, number of tackles is not a good measure of defensive players. Bad defenses stay on the field, so poorer teams have more tackles. Good defenses get off the field.

Greenway turns 32 years old this season so the vikings have to start planning for his replacement. It is a good opportuniy for others to show what they can do.

I really hope Greenway will be on the field Thursday.

  16. The Viking injuries are adding up. Winning the SuperBowl and getting Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year will be more difficult. The Packers have shown everyone how to win with multiple on-going injuries. Maybe the Vikings can show us too. It all starts with no excuses. Right? Isn’t that what the trolls have been preaching as fact? No excuses…….just do it. Show us.

  17. That’s all you got? You’re tired…..go to bed. When you have to resort to your timeworn non-football related put downs and insults, it’s time to go to bed. See you tomorrow!

  18. The rancid stench of losing permeates the Viking fan base. They typically embrace the suck by the end of September, and their horrible team has finished in last place for 3 of the past 4 years.

    Hapless.

    And tasteless.
