The Vikings got a great first half from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and their running game to build a 24-14 halftime lead.
They bumped that lead up to 13 points on their first drive of the third quarter, but things have taken a turn for the worse for the home team. Devin Hester and Antone Smith have scored touchdowns on consecutive Atlanta possessions to give the Falcons a 28-27 lead with 91 seconds left to play in the third.
Hester took a short pass from Matt Ryan, broke a tackle and sprinted 36 yards for his third touchdown of the season. Smith burst around the right end of the line for a 48-yard touchdown after the Falcons forced a punt, which Jeff Locke hit poorly to set the Falcons up with prime field position.
If the Vikes can’t come back, there will be some regrets about missed opportunities on either side of halftime. After a Jerick McKinnon run was ruled short of the end zone just before the half, coach Mike Zimmer didn’t call a timeout that would have forestalled a 10-second runoff on the game clock and settled for a field goal. The Vikings faced a third-and-one from the Atlanta 23 on their first drive of the second half, but opted to kick a field goal after burning a timeout to talk things over.
