Vikings get win while they worry about Teddy Bridgewater’s ankle

Getty Images

The Teddy Bridgewater era started with a win in Minnesota, but there are going to be some worried folks in Minneapolis about when chapter two might take place.

Bridgewater threw for 317 yards, ran for a touchdown and led the Vikings on a nine-play, 87-yard drive to retake the lead after the Falcons pulled in front in the third quarter. That set the Vikings up for a 41-28 win that levels their record at 2-2 on the year.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that Bridgewater left the game with a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter, forcing the Vikings to turn once more to Christian Ponder. Initial reports are that x-rays were negative and that the injury is a sprain, but there will surely be more tests as to the severity of the sprain. With a game against the Packers in Green Bay on Thursday, everyone with the Vikings will be keeping their fingers crossed that they don’t turn up anything too serious.

The injury can’t take away all the good feelings about the offense. Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon ran for 213 yards on 38 carries and Asiata scored three touchdowns in a game for the second time in his career. The defense gave up some big plays, but Harrison Smith had a pick to seal the victory late and the Falcons didn’t put any points on the board after going ahead 28-27 late in the third.

Atlanta has some injury issues of their own to sort out. They saw center Joe Hawley, left guard Justin Blalock and right tackle Lamar Holmes leave with injuries, leaving them with no choice but to play tight end Levine Toilolo at right tackle down the stretch. The offensive line had questions when totally healthy, so any long-term absences will make life even harder on that side of the ball.

The same is true in Minnesota, of course, but at least they got to taste victory before waiting to hear from the medical staff.

  1. Teddy Bridgewater is the best QB in the NFL.

    …And it’s not even close.

I’ve been telling all of you PFT Readers this since before the Minnesota Vikings even drafted him.

That we would draft the growing legend in Teddy Bridgewater.

    The next Joe Montana.

    And look what happened?

    They did.

    I was correct.

    The Prophecy is being fulfilled.

I’m just the Paul Revere, giving you the news.

The Minnesota Vikings Dynasty has finally begun.

    I’ve said it the beginning.

And there’s no doubt we are winning the Super Bowl this year.

    No questions asked.

We are the best franchise in all of Sports.

    The Historic Minnesota Vikings.

    Bow down to us, peasants.

    The Dynasty has begun.

    #Skol

  2. Teddy..Barr…McKinnon….this team is loaded with young talent. By the time the new stadium opens we should be an elite NFL team…..

  3. But..but…he has small hands!

Anyone else want to grasp at straws while trying to say he will be a busy?

    Shhhhhh!!!!

  4. I told all u fools how good the Vikings will be.told u how good teddy bridge water would be.now u will pay the price.teddy had over 300 passing in this game.we will tear the packers apart and the Vikings will match toward the NFC north tittle with ease.SKOL

  5. I’ll take some small hands for over 300! Let’s give it up to the defense? They came up big when they had to. Ryan trying to pad his stats and pads them the wrong way! Packers are next and we are going to smoke you!

  6. He will be fine, the fact that he was back on the field and walking around on it, shows it is a minor sprain. Don’t remember the last rookie to look so calm in the pocket. Unfazed. Skol!!!!

  7. The Minnesota Vikings impending dynasty will hit the NFL by storm, but don’t say you didn’t hear it here first.

Talent wise, we easily have the best team in the NFL and arguably one of the best teams of all time.

There’s nothing stopping us this year, multiple super bowls will be coming to Minneapolis with the emergence of Teddy Bridgewater. They are setting themselves up to dominate the NFC for the decade.

Every team will start trying to emulate the Vikings in every way.
Every fan will be jealous of Vikings nation.
Every owner will be jealous they don’t own a historic future dynasty team like the Vikings.
Every coach will fear traveling to Minneapolis to face this legendary Vikings squad.
Every other teams players wish they’d have been drafted by the superior Vikings roster.
Every GM will wish they had the drafting smarts that Rick Spielman has.
Every blade of grass will wish it would have been grown in the new gorgeous stadium that belongs to Minnesota.

  8. Good thing Luck didn’t do that, there wouldn’t be enough ink left to print all the praise.

But let’s give credit to where it belongs, anywhere but on Teddy Bridgewater. He of the tiny hands.

  9. Gotta like what you saw from the Vikings rookie squad today. No AP. Rookie QB. No Chad Greenway. 3rd year WR Wright with 8 catches for 132 yards.

The names Bridgewater, Wright, McKinnon were irrelevant to the league last year. Cordarelle Patterson didn’t even have a good game, the the Vikes scored 41. Not saying they are a playoff team yet, but things are looking up.

  10. Teddy topped all these “elite” QB’s in his first NFL game. Just think what his stats would be if he played the entire game!

Teddy with his “tiny hands” did far better than “puny arms” Rodgers and Farve comparing first game stats!!!

    Passing CP/AT YDS TD INT
    T. Bridgewater 19/30 317 0 0 (1 rushing TD)

    Rodgers 18/22 178 1 0
    P. Manning 21/37 302 1 3
    Brady 13/23 168 0 0
    Brees 15/27 221 1 0
    Farve 22/39 289 2 0

  11. Season is going pretty much as I predicted for the Vikes. Some stumbles early as they adapt to the new scheme and the wheat and chaff get separated on a young defense. They’ll lose some games they should have won and they’ll win some games they weren’t supposed to. They’ll be up and down the first half of the season and then be a very difficult team to beat in the 2nd half of the season once they’ve settled in to the new defensive system.

The Peterson fiasco certainly won’t help this team (my condolences on that Vikes fans) but there’s enough talent there along with an impeccable coaching staff that they’re going to have a solid season. Young guys will get experience in prep for playoff runs the next couple of years.

And all the idiots who predicted Ted Bridgewater would be a bust need to wedgie themselves to the point of bleeding.

The idiots doubling down on Bridgewater being a bust need to go boil their heads in a spaghetti pot. Trust me, it won’t make you any dumber.

  12. Luckily Bridgewater was able to walk on that ankle. That’s a great sign. Another great sign is that he threw for 317 yards, no interceptions, and rushed for a TD in his FIRST start. People will try to downgrade his win and this performance by saying the Falcons aren’t a good team. Well, the Bucs (and most of everyone else) sure thought they were good last week. This is a great win, and Bridgewater is going to be a great quarterback. Anyone who tries to argue that is just bitter and/or unwilling to admit the Vikings have found their QB of the future.

I’m not too worried about this ankle injury. Unlike #12 on the team to the east, Teddy is tough as nails.
    _______________

TeddyToughAsNails was carted off with an ankle sprain.

  15. Walking on an ankle and being play an NFL game on that ankle are two different things, especially being a short week.

I can understand the true Vikings fans being excited. Someone finally able to make Jennings worth all that money they threw at him.

Lets wait a bit before crowning him though, because with all great QBs Manning, Rodgers Aikman… there are ALWAYS going to be growing pains.

  16. FACT: Cleveland spent $100K for a scientific report to tell them who the best QB was in the draft.

The Report came back and said Bridgewater.

    The Browns took Johnny Fooseball.

    Well done Cleveland. Well done.

  17. Teddy is fine. He was dancing on the sidelines and is ready for next week. This kid has poise and the team has given him a ton of outlet passes to get him acclimated to the passing game. He looks dam good. With there defense this team is to be reconed with. They are no pushover and I said before the season, they have the best three tandom rushers in football, pre Pederson fiasco that is.

  21. gg Vikings, Bridgewater looked poised and your o-line manhandled our defense. However, I must say, we keep getting hit by the injury bug; 3 offensive linemen down + Matthews was hurt earlier.

  22. Lol @ the falcons. They sure looked good against the bucs that Thursday against the bucs and against the saints.
    #riseup #falconfail

  23. Congratulations on you win Vikes fans, but to all of you talking about being an elite team and winning the Super Bowl maybe you should tone it down a bit and act like you’ve won before? Jeesal.

  24. I understand the fans to the east are pointing out that Teddy didn’t have a TD pass.

I don’t think Teddy worries about personal stats like their QB does.

He led the team to a victory in the 4th game of his rookie season. That “W” means more to Teddy than a TD pass in a losing effort.

  25. “He played great today… but the sample size is small… Vince Young was a great rookie QB too.”

If given the choice between a crappy rookie year and a promising one, I’d take the latter. Bridgewater is promising, and that is all we can ask for at this point in his career.

  26. Maybe someday, possibly this season, that Bridewater kid with the big Mickey Mouse gloves could throw a TD pass in the NFL.

Daydreams sure are better than reality.

  27. Last week the football world fawned over Matt Ryan, this week it’s Teddy Bridgewater. Ryan and the Falcons are documented lousy as a road team, not to mention they had a TE playing at tackle. Now the Vikes travel to GB Thursday, lets not crown Bridgewater yet after a game, he’s going on the road to battle one of the elite QBs on his home turf.

  28. Bad oofficiating helps the Vikings again. How many times did their Defense get away with Pass Interference? And the Walsh kickoff goes out of bounds before reaching the goal line. Falcons should have had the ball at the 40 instead of the 20.

  29. “Yeah, like Stafford is made of stone. Lol yourself.”
    _______________________________________

Stafford hasn’t missed a start since 2010. That being said, it seems like most rookie QB’s are getting beaten up early and then settling in after that.

Then again, it seems like everybody is getting injured this year. Pretty soon, most teams are going to have an injury list that’s longer than the 53 man roster.

  30. Atlanta might not have the best defense. Who knows, it might be as bad as green bays. But Atlanta has some very very good recievers, they also have one of the best QB’s in the league, and Devin Hester. That’s enough firepower to make every game they are playing a shootout. Your not going to beat them 7-0.. It’s going to be a game that consists of a lot of offense. And Teddy stepped up today and provided enough for MN to keep up and get the win. That’s big!

  31. Remember when the Vikings fans all took the PFT message boards and said the EXACT same things they are saying about Joe Horn????

  32. This is why I hate thursday games. Never mind big injuries, even the dings & bruises that don’t heal in 4 days are putting on an inferior product on the field.

  33. Funny how NOW all the GB trolls are talking about how bad the Atlanta defense is, yet Atlanta was a 3 1/2 point favorite before the game started!

The GB trolls come up with excuses when GB loses and when the Vikings win. I guess that is happens when your defense allows more points than the Vikings and your offense scores ONE WHOLE POINT more with “puny arms” Rodgers than the Vikings with two different QB’s.

Give up GB, your time on top is OVER!!!!!

    IT’S TEDDY TIME!!!!!

  34. The Vikings win….I am as happy about that as anyone, as I have been a Vikes fan since I was a kid (now 52).
As there are some who are seemingly proclaiming this as the win of the century (or so it seems)
    It’s not.
Yeah tha Vikings played well offensively, but lets look at their opponent. The Falcons play much btr at home than on the road. The Falcons are an average team at best.
The young talent, of the Vikings, showed their ability….they ran the ball well, Teddy B. looked good, the defense played well.
But, when they nock off the Seahawks, or Broncos, or some of the more elite teams. Then I will be even more impressed with my Vikings, than I already am. They have a lot of good young talent.

  35. pkrlvr says: Sep 28, 2014 8:09 PM

When Teddy and the Vikings win in Lambeau on Thurs, the GB trolls (not you) will be out in full force making excuses, such as Matthews groin hasn’t healed yet, Peppers has lost a step, things like that. 😀

    _______

I didn’t say he was more durable, I said he was tougher. Your guy missed 8 weeks with an injury that takes no more than 6 weeks to heal. In college, our guy had a bad knee and a broken wrist and he came into a game in which they needed him and led the team to a victory.

  37. I’m glad guys like tokyo and carl have the sense to keep their mouths shut on this story. Anyone trying to say something negative about the Vikings today is about as obvious a troll as you can get.

  38. The reffing was janky for both teams. I loved Gump! Great poise, elusive, strong arm, great decision making. Finally good to see a real General leading the troops. Harrison Smith defender of the year? Love Zimms scheme, keeps the offense guessing. I’m actually looking forward to this Thursdays game. SKOL!

  39. Teddy is a beast, guy should have been the first qb taken. He’s the most pro ready guy to come out in the last 2 years, Vikings got themselves a good one.

  40. Nobody has given any credit that Norv the Genius has basically had to reinvent the whole offense due to AD being out in two weeks…

We had more yards today than any Vikings game since 2004!!! And this is without our most talented offensive player, a banged up O line, second string TEs and a rookie QB!

Give props to the vikes, you guys. By any objective analysis they put out an amazing performance on offense today.

  41. It only took four games and now, ponder is back in. Four games. In four games, the Vikings are already down to their third string quarterback. There are teams in this league that can go a decade without starting more than one guy under center. The Vikings? Four games, and they already have three. Vikings have now had four starting quarterbacks in less than a year.

And you know what is going to happen? Ponder is probably going to play well enough to create another year of quarterback shuffling. And thus, the Vikings merry go round of quarterbacks will continue for atleast another two years.

    ==================================
No. Starting in his first game, he can’t finish it out. What has he done to show that he’s tougher than nails. Players like Cutler and Rogers have taken major hits with poor offensive lines over the years and have shown their toughness. Bridgewater didn’t even get sacked and couldn’t finish the game out. He looks fragile.

  43. Its so cute to see Vikings fans gloat in victory and envision the dynasty of superbowls ahead – because they won a football game. Its downright charming. Like watching a child celebrate cause they found a nickel on the sidewalk. Look mommy – I’m rich.

  44. By the way – what ever happened to the chants of Lacy being the best back in the league? Each of the Vikings running backs had more yards than him. Bridgewater was a handful of yards away from having more rushing yards than lacy for the second week in a row.

    Packer fans are funny.

  45. After the ankle sprain he stayed in the game and handed off to Asiata for the TD and then threw the a pass for the 2 pt conversion. He just needs a little of the pain meds that Favre took and he’ll be fine.

Need more from Patterson and Jennings, but at least we finally got Wright involved. Would be scary if we still had Rudolph, Peterson and our best OG, but I’ll take this. ATL is a tough offense, I thought the defense bent, but didn’t break when they needed and overall played very well, especially the secondary.

  46. bengalsfan20, I agree, he was pro ready and that the pundits were wrong out of wishful thinking, but Turner must realize that Teddy is a classic pocket passer, who has mobility.

He’s not a runner. He is more A-Rod than Cam. Trust his throwing and let McKinnon do the running.

  47. I guarantee you they will lose by double digits on Thursday.

And I guarantee you 3/4 of their fanbase disappears.

  55. well at least pftpoet has dropped ‘classy’ from the laundry list of glowing adjectives to describe his Vikes. This is change we can believe in!

  56. My Vikes played a tough game against a tough O and prevailed. It could have been worse; they lost Brawlie and a grip of good men on their line, but they did not get carved up by Ryan like all the pundits and writers predicted.

Teddy has icewater in his veins. Teddy Icewater, baby. McKinnon has a fire in his eyes, and Barr has a burning when he pees….o wait. Hopefully not, but that sack was pretty bad azz. 8)

Thursday is going to fun, good luck Packers, i hope we have an exciting game and not a blowout like the Taints and the Boys.

  57. Funny how the team that won 56-14 last week and was favored to win this week is suddenly overrated and hapless.

If you really want to see a team that is overrated and hapless, it will be wearing puke green and mustard yellow Thursday night.

  58. I smell arrogance from the West from all the Bridgewater positivity. I still say ” cancel the rest of the games and simply hand the trophy to the Vikings,” they’re that good. Even if Bridegwater can’t play in their SuperBowl this Thursday, they can win the division without him. The Packers won it without Rodgers. Show us how it is done. Do it.

  59. The kid looked good. Hard to remember a Vikings QB throwing for 300+ in a game and not having any picks. You can quell all the squawk about the Falcons Def sucking, they had 10 days to prepare for this game and they still got smoked. And if you dont think the 3 extra days of preparation help, ask Pittsburgh!

  60. Wait, when Aaron Rodgers broke his freaking collarbone (which sucks and takes forever to heal, by the way, I know firsthand) every single one of the Vikings’ fans called him soft. Where are all of you now calling for Teddy’s retirement because he’s injury prone?

Dude got beginner’s luck against a crappy defense. Playing well in college is not equal to playing in the NFL- they’re two completely separate games. Thursday will probably prove that, since the Packers’ defense is finally waking up. We’re by no means the best team in the league (yet, although I doubt we will be this season), but compared to the Falcons we’re going to be the difference from playing a JV soccer team vs. playing a pro football team against the Vikings.

  61. Why talk smack before the game?
The fun day to talk smack next week is going to be Friday.

One comment did crack me up:
“something something, but the Falcons defense sucks . . . ”
You have seen the Packer defense, right?

  62. Took Erin Rodgers 3+ years in the league to put up numbers like that.

Teddy is Ready! NFC North be scared!!

  63. Turns out the pro day probably wasn’t a good representation of Teddy’s game. Reminded me a little of Kurt Warner yesterday the way he was leading receivers so we could actually see a little run after catch. Long way to go but looks like the kid can play. Kudos Teddy 2 Glove.

And that’s how fast you get replaced in the NFL AP.

The only ones mentioning superbowls are the trolls and pftpoet. No other Viking fan mentioned a superbowl. We as fans are simply happy that a young QB came in and played as if he can become the franchise. I think after the last decade of BS there’s a lot of reason to be happy.

What will the trolls say after we beat GB on Thursday making Rodgers, Matthews and Peppers look like they belong on a JV team? My guess is they will blame Matthews groin injury, will say that Rodgers is “tired” after the Bears game and will say that Peppers is not the same player he use to be.
