Belichick bears the blame for current Patriots’ mess

Getty Images

When reporters asked Patriots coach Bill Belichick about a burgeoning quarterback controversy, he shouldn’t have scoffed.  He should have been grateful.

The focus on Tom Brady has kept many from looking at the guy squarely responsible for the current state of the team — Belichick himself.

The head coach and de facto G.M. has been heralded as a genius for much of the last 13 years, and rightfully so.  Belichick has found a way to keep the team competitive on a consistent basis in an age of parity and a salary cap.

But the quality of the roster has eroded in recent years.  The offensive line presently stinks.  While the departure of long-time line coach Dante Scarnecchia likely played a role in the ability of the line to play its role the right way, the players aren’t good.  Which makes the decision to dump guard Logan Mankins after he refused to take a pay cut even more bizarre.  Belichick miscalculated the ability of the line to thrive without Mankins, and as a result the Patriots could miss the postseason for the first time since 2008.

No one can question Belichick’s coaching ability.  But when it comes to handling the personnel side of the operation, he’s either losing his fastball or he needs more help.  Because it’s not enough to find ways to trade down or to draft backup quarterbacks lower than perhaps they should have gone.  At some point, the players need to be good enough to play.

Right now, they’re not.  And that lands at the feet of the guy who runs the show.

  1. Don’t like where the Tomlin threads are headed, eh? I understand. After all, Steelers fans have been operating on the drowning man theory for years now.

  2. The Pats haven’t won a Superbowl since they got caught cheating…He was an awful coach in Cleveland…and since he can’t cheat is isn’t quite the genius he is given credit for…even more so since he doesn’t have his serial killer on offense…

  3. Not only that but Belichick hoarded draft picks for years during Brady’s prime rather than use them on a defense that was frequently pretty terrible in the secondary.

All things come to an end and it will be interesting how quickly the end comes for Brady and the Patriots.

  4. There’s no QB controversy. Anyone who thinks Garrapolo having a few good minutes means he’s starting is dreaming.

Belichick does bear the blame for a lot of this however.

As does Josh McDaniels who just doesn’t seem to get his high octane offense only works with the kind of players the Pats had between 2007-2011, not with what the Pats have now. His play calling has been absolutely horrible and the games plans weak to non-existent from what I can see.

The need to get rid of him and grab Charlie Weiss back while he’s still available. If anyone can get Brady back on track its the coordinator who understood how to use more limited weapons and got Brady to his biggest successes.

  5. This article is spot on. Forget the stupidity of getting rid of Mankins. The arrogance of dumping Mankins without even talking to your field general is beyond bizarre. I wouldn’t blame Brady if he took 9 out of 10 plays off for the rest of the year. What was Belichick and his idiots thinking?

The Patriots haven’t drafted well in years and now they might be the least talented team in the NFL. Brady hasn’t got much to work with.

    ————————

Seriously, how many of their wide outs were even drafted, let alone drafted in the first few rounds?

Patriots have not had a playmaking wide receiver since Moss left.

  7. It’s too early in the season for anyone to write off the Patriots. No, they haven’t played very well this year, but the year is young, and their division is weak. It’s not like they’re 0-4 right now.

They will win the AFC East again this year, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they got back to the AFC championship game. No, they are not a Super Bowl champion caliber team, but Belichick will get the most out of this team.

  8. “No one can question Belichick’s coaching ability.”

Wha??? Belichick punted twice on 4th and short from Chiefs territory. Terrible coaching. Back when he had some you-know-whats, Belicheck went for it on fourth and short. Remember the 4th and 2 against the Colts. It didn’t work, but it was the right call. Belichick has become a terrible GM and a decent, but not great, coach.

  9. Bill the GM has pulled off some great moves but he’s not infallible, the great trades are Corey Dillon… moss trade… Welker trade… Moss trade again… Richard Seymour, the bad trades vrable Cassel for 2nd rounder, hansworth, ochocinco

  10. When you uncover a franchise QB for a very low draft pick and cost then you should be able to do a lot of winning, but over the years the Patriots haven’t come close to winning as much as they could and should have been winning. It’s incredibly frustrating that the media hasn’t focused on that notion over the years and when considering that there have been so many obvious personnel mistakes and in-game strategy mistakes at least from my amateur point of view. If this team had a stronger GM and strategist for everything that is relevant to a football team, then they could have truly dominated at a much higher level.

  11. “Hey Goodell, buddy, I need a quick favor from you… Could you please confiscate all tapes and recordings of last night’s embarrassing 41-14 blowout loss to the Chiefs and send them to your video evidence fire pit for safe keeping? Thanks.” – Robert Kraft.

  12. The NFL is a brutal business and NO ONE survives on the top for that long without finally succumbing to gravity. The Pats have just made their run last longer than most.

Of course, the haters will hate out here. But, the reality is that you’ve got to admire their ability to stay competitive in the salary cap era.

Now, the question will be how to best reload while Brady still has some time left.

  13. Tommy Kelly said it best: Do the Patriots want to win or save money?

It’s fairly obvious by their personnel moves that it’s the latter. The Patriots were exposed for what they really are – a team that’s done being a serious contender in the watered down AFC.

  14. the patriots have been good for years. they were able to let good players go and train up new players. unfortunately, until this point, the talent seems to run out. they rely on brady to make the difference, but he could only do so much. Looks like their window of rebuild had kicked in years ago, and now they’re just starting to feel the effect of it.

  15. No way they are missing the playoffs. Just look at that division. Even a severely flawed NE team can win it. But that doesn’t mean they are actual contenders. They just aren’t that talented.

  16. Many of us have been saying the same thing for years– its only now the media is catching on as it becomes so obvious.

The media were too used to kissing Belicheats butt and were scared to go against the tide.

  17. As Pats Season Ticket holder since ’82, I’ve been a fan of BB and willing to overlook a lot of troubling things (can’t draft for crap in rounds 2-4) and some questionable personnel moves.

However, this disaster of an offensive line is clearly the worst.

Yet, when did Connolly, Solder, Wendell all forget how to play? Solder was okay last year, now he looks like a toll taker on the Pike, waving them through…….

Hoping this thing turns around soon! But for the first time in a long time, not feeling so good about this team…..

  18. i dislike the pats. their SB wins are tainted by cheating.

    however…

    1. they are 2-2 and tied for div lead.
    2. afc east is BAD. who’s gonna win the div other than NE ? jets…with geno ? buff just benched manuel. mia…maybe…
    3. last nite they ran into a buzz saw. arrowhead is always a tough place to play. against a chiefs team that has stabilized. on MNF. and in KC which is presently sports crazy between that gm and MLB play-in game.

the reports of the pats’ funeral are a bit premature.

  19. Has anybody seen the division they play in ? One team’s QB benched already, one is close to it and one was publicly threatened with it. They will make the postseason w/o any problems.

  20. lol – yes, they looked awful last night but they are 2-2 4 games into the season(after beating 2 bad teams). BB doesn’t get many top picks because the Pats are in the AFC Championship game every year (like last year)…it’s a lot easier to hit on a draft pick if you pick in the top 15 every year, or more than once a decade. It’s been forever and a day since the Pats have had a losing season. What other NFL team that’s been elite the past 5-10 years can say that? Pittsburgh, 49ers, Seattle, Baltimore, Denver have all had at least one awful season in the last 5-10 years….not the Pats. People are embracing the collapse of a team that hasn’t even happened yet. They can still win their division this year and maybe Tom will finally give BB a piece of his mind and get some talent in next off season. If we’re still having this conversation week 4 of next season and BB hasn’t changed ANYTHING then I’ll be on board, but let’s pump the brakes on the “mess” talk.

  21. And yet the AFC East is a dumpster fire and they’re almost certainly still going to the playoffs. Quite the “mess”, wish I had that as a Bucs fan.

  22. Brady was carrying the Pats on his back for years especially the last 3. Covering up for the Coach’s draft warts. If Brady wasn’t such a sore run up the score winner, I would feel bad now that he can’t carry that sorry team the Coach put around him anymore. That D is atrocious even with Revis and Brady should be scared behind that OLine…

  23. Please Trent Baalke, trade for Tom in the off season and end the first read only experiment that is Kap.

Signed 49er fan of 25 years.

  24. As dysfunctional as New England appears AT PRESENT, there is no one in that division better than the Pats. End of story.

  25. I think we are seeing the final days of Tom Brady one of the best ever to play the game at QB. Unfortunately for him Belichick has not done a good job of protecting him with a lackluster offensive line. He is getting a beating and at age 37, it is taking its toll on him.

  26. Seriously, how many of their wide outs were even drafted, let alone drafted in the first few rounds?
    —————————————————————-
Since 03′ they’ve drafted 11 WRs. Three are on the roster (Slater,Edelman, and Dobson) and only one of them is a quality receiver (Edelman). And he was drafted as a QB in Round 7. The Patriots do not nearly get enough talk for their struggles at drafting WR like the Jets and Ravens do.

  27. This has been building for years. The Patriots have consistently put the emphasises on money over the player time after time and when you combine that with Bill’s questionable drafting decisions this is the end result.

Food for thought: in 2010 Bill traded back twice in the first round of the draft. Those two pick were used by the Broncos and Cowboys to select Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant.

P.S. don’t give the Kraft’s a pass on this mess, at the end of the day this is their buisness model.

  28. He was an awful coach in Cleveland

Don’t believe everything you hear. Belichick gave Cleveland the best season they’ve had in the past 28 years. Look it up.

The O line will be fine as the season goes on. The real knock on Bill the GM is his failure to draft and develop quality wideouts.

Based on being healthy inactives, I say Thompkins and Dobson are now busts. As well as Boyce who was part of that class. The disappearance of Amendola is strange as well.

I say give Jimmy a start. See what he can do. Worst case scenario is that it lights a fire under Brady.

  29. all those times you ran up the score on teams?

Aww, didn’t somebody get their participation trophy?

  30. Players will come cheap if they have a chance to win a Super Bowl.

What was truly the downfall was springing for Revis. Not only does Revis look. Ad, paying him 12 million a year while getting rod of other needed talent leaves a very sour taste in the players mouth. They would have been better off getting two top guards and a tackle for that 12 million. Still shocked they didn’t try to pickup Seantrel Henderson. High ceiling players have always been a favorite of Bills.

I’d say it’s really time to consider if they are better off rebuilding with Garapolo and dumping Brady. 500k a year is a lot easier to work with than 16 million.

  31. This will be Brady’s last year. He and the missus have a couple of hundred million dollars now, and the team won’t be good for years. Plus, he’s still got his health.

  32. Tommy Kelly said it best: Do the Patriots want to win or save money?
It’s fairly obvious by their personnel moves that it’s the latter

And now Tommy is playing for veterans minimum in Arizona.

    Are the Cardinals cheap too?

  33. I’m far from a Patriots fan but would it really surprise anybody if Brady came out and threw for 350 and 3TDs vs. the Bengals AND the Patriots won? I learned a long time ago to never count out Hoody and Brady.

  34. No one in any interview has questioned his trading of Mankins to his face. It has been one of his downfalls. He overestimated how great he is and underestimated how great Logan was. It was dumb when he did it and looks even worse now.

  35. “If this team had a stronger GM and strategist for everything that is relevant to a football team, then they could have truly dominated at a much higher level.”

Absolutely the truth. Belichick the coach has done an amazing job with what Belichick the GM gave him to work with over the years. Best example was when he put WR Troy Brown into the secondary and got away with it.

Great HOF coach. GM? Not so much.

Playing in a non competitive division made the Pats look better than they was.

Except there win % is almost the same outside the division since 2001

  38. Sorry, what exactly is he to blame for? The 3 straight AFC Championship games they’ve gotten to? The 4 straight 1/2 seeds they’ve gotten? They have a rough 4 games (in which they’ve gone 2-2, it’s not like they’re 0-4) and all of a sudden he’s the worst GM around? Everyone relax. The o-line is a work in progress. He’s made some bad picks, sure, but show me a GM who hasn’t, and show me one who’s kept his team in the hunt for 13 straight years.

  39. Jebuz people, RELAX. They are 2-2 in a crappy division. This dooms-day nonsense is getting old, it’s week 4.

I’m not even of fan of the Pats but this is getting nuts.

The Steelers, Colts, Broncos, Chiefs, Giants, Packers, Bears, Falcons, Seahawks, & 49ers have all won two games.

  40. To all you “AFC East” sucks crowd folks: the same was said about the NFCWest 3 YEARS AGO! Look for the AFC East to get very strong very quickly:

Miami: Moreno comes back soon (maybe even Packers–look out Green Bay!) with the same intesity he had vs. Pats, and if Tannehill really is finally over the hump, then Fins can definitely win division

Buffalo: If Orton is anything like what he was in Denver for a while and Watkins can work well with him, then Bills can also at least attempt to take division.

New York: The sooner the Jets replace Geno with Vick, the sooner we will know if Jets can be for real.

And yes, the Pats can take the division again IF that suddenly bad OL can get its act together…OL is not as bad as Miami’s was last year, but it ain’t much better…still, does Brady need a great OL? Too bad Kenbrell, Edelman and the others aren’t Moss and Welker…

but yes, BB blew it giving away Mankins. that’s the way it works with the great ones sometimes…even Don Shula started to suck in his final year, and for several years at drafting (Eric Kumerow and John Bosa…nough said!)

  41. So funny how the Pats lose a game or two and there is just mass hysteria around the football world. Didn’t the Saints (another Super Bowl favorite) just get destroyed by the Cowboys the night before?

If they fall to 3-6 at some point, we can begin to really dissect this, but I still see a team with Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Darrelle Revis, Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo, Chandler Jones, Devin McCourty, and Brandon Browner. They’re 2-2 and tied for first place. Wouldn’t be so quick to write this team off.

  42. its funny to see how different the tenor is on the belichick thread in comparison to the tomlin thread – hilarious.

Belichick has done Tom a disservice in his latter years. From making it personal with Welker to draft two QB’s in early rounds versus players to grow his team around.

His recent draft history has been substandard, yet he is a great coach and has been able to mask some of the talent deficiency.

Oh crap, they made it to the AFC championship or Super Bowl in each of the last 3 years.

(As I struggle for a reason to criticize…) SPYGATE!!

He’s elite, the team is breaking in new players. New England will be okay come January/February.

  43. Oh Ya Bill its all on you!

Tom Brady’s Stat line this year

-Completion % 59.1 good for 27th in the league, and not much better than Tim Tebow’s career rating I might add.
-Yards a game average is 198 good for 30th in the league.
-Average per pass attempt is 5.77 which is second last in the league and just barely above rookie QB Derek Carr in Oakland LoL!
-Touchdown Passes he has 4 which is good for 21st in the league EJ Manual has more and was just benched I might add, Ryan Fitzpatrick has more and even Ryan Tannehill has more Bwwahahahahaahahah.
-Interceptions 2 is good for 21st in the league which is one stat you want to be low. With the multiple dropped picks against Oakland he really should be leading the league with 4 or 5.
-Sacs 9 which is good for 7th in the league (this isn’t a good thing pats nation)
-QB rating 79.1 which determines how well your playing the position there are only 3 QB playing worse at present moment and that’s Derek Carr, Geno Smith, and Jake Locker.
-Fumbles he leads the league with 5 and also leads the league in fumbles lost with 3. Tom stop eating that popcorn bro! Them fingers are greasy!
-3rd down % is 21 for 58 with a whopping 36% conversion rate. Which ranks 27th in the league and is absolutely pathetic.
-This guy doesn’t deserve to be in the conversation as the best ever. He has a hard enough time winning an argument that he’s better than his back up. Tom Brady is Over rated and since being exposed as a fraud he proves game in and game out he’s a bottom 3rd of the league caliber QB. THIS GUY SUCKS!

  44. Seriously people, SPYGATE was years ago. Belichick still got the Pats to the AFC Championship game last year. (I’m a Denver fan btw). The guy has forgotten more about football going to the bathroom than you, I or anyone else will learn in a lifetime. Count out the Patriots at your own peril. Gronk isn’t close to 100% and Amendola has been MIA. Heck, I could see Hoody trading for Josh Gordon. Nothing shocks me anymore with the Patriots.

  45. Please give me a break. They are 2-2 and suffered one bad loss… they are still tied for the lead in the division for goodness sake. They looked really bad, but so what. They also lost to the Bills 31-0 in 2003 and lost to the Chargers 41-17 and the Colts 40-21 in 2005. They’ve lost bad and looked bad before. For all those jumping on the roster quality bandwagon, some of you are the same people that predicted they would make or win the Super Bowl only a month ago with that roster. You didn’t know they were this bad either.

They can still win the division 10-6 and make the playoffs and have a chance to make the Super Bowl just like every other playoff team. They might not. They might lose the division and miss the playoffs like 2002 and 2008. It has happened before.

Somehow their past success has been remembered like they were always the 2007 version of the team. They’ve had bad seasons and bad games before. They’ve had bad O-lines and bad d-Lines they couldn’t stop the run, etc. Over all they have bounced back the same season or the next, fixed it and won a ton of games. They won Super Bowls with the same kind of players they have now. They almost went to the Super Bowl in 2006 with terrible receivers.

There is no team that is immune from a game like that on Monday. Every team get’s spanked sooner or later. I think the Patriots deserve a little bit of credit and some room to figure out the current mess like they always have done.

  46. In “Patriot Reign” Belicheat admits that he’ll cut a better player because he thinks he can cover up the replacement players inferior abilities with scheme.

He does this to save money.

He did this even when they were FAR below the cap.

This practice always seemed ludicrous to me and now it’s catching up to him.

  47. PORTNOYCHUCK said: “People are embracing the collapse of a team that hasn’t even happened yet.”

It IS happening right now. Just tune in every Sunday and watch it.

  48. I’m putting a ton of the blame on Brady himself, and not just his physical regression. His attitude on the sidelines has been downright hostile and demeaning. He’s got a line that could care less if he takes a hard hit because they just don’t like him. Watch some Game Rewind and you’ll see what I mean. They rarely pick him up from the turf, they rarely get angry if he took a “cheap” shot and the avoid him on the sideline. He needs to at least be professionally friendly with his role players. You could fairly say that the Chiefs have a worse O-Line than the Patriots, but those guys work hard for Smith and care.

  49. My take is Belichick should be granted some slack, given what he’s accomplished. Over the last 25 years, Belichick has played KEY roles in at least SEVEN Super Bowls, five of which resulted in Super Bowl victories. That’s amazing.

Football, and each of the elements related to it one way or another, is not an exact science, unless you’re a Monday Morning QB who has 20/20 hindsight — which we all have. Anybody can pick the ponies if they already know who won the race (see The Sting).

I would give BB a lot of latitude — he’s EARNED it. He’s smarter than you, me and pretty much everyone else in here or otherwise.

Signed, Steeler Fan whose team has gotten its butt kicked by BB in the early 2000’s

“There’s no QB controversy. Anyone who thinks Garrapolo having a few good minutes means he’s starting is dreaming…”

And I think a similar thing was said before. If you think some 6th round pick is going to start over Drew Bledsoe, you’re crazy!

Reality has a funny way of kicking what you thought to the curb.

  51. Belichick has seen worse media storms before. He was shredded in Cleveland and NY. Brady, as a 22-5 starter at Michigan, was forced to split snaps with Drew Hensen, which is why he never ever comes out of a game willingly so a backup can get some snaps (though he is never insubordinate, for those of you who think he is a prima donna). They are the fiercest of competitors. These guys ask for no quarter, and they give none. Men after my own heart.

Be careful what you say…. Something wicked this way comes…..

  52. I think that McDaniel’s is responsible for some of the current situation. The protection schemes, of the plays being called, are to much for this young interior of the line. The play calling has to be “vanilla’d” a bit more. There were some HORRIBLE plays called early on during 3rd and 3.. and the like. Trying to run it outside versus that dime defense that was coming in on 3rd downs and crowding the line of scrimmage was just head shaking.

Also, the pass down the left sideline to Edelman.. where Gruden was blabbering “he just stopped running!”… that was on Brady. Edelman recognized that there was a safety over the top (plus the corner covering) on him and he is SUPPOSED to cut under the coverage. Tom just misread the safety.

It’s frustrating that people think the way you do. He’s struggling through 4 games therefore he was always and overrated player none of his past accomplishments are meaningful? The only people that write things like that think Manning or someone else is the best ever. So think that, but make a logical case, but don’t make like Brady is not one of the greatest ever. He definitely is. Have some respect.

  55. NE’s loss of the 4th game of the season, is 31 other teams’ winning the SB.

Oh I notice raven’s ed bendover is back…hey ed how did ray rice’s wife “tripping over something in the elevator” video work out for you. How come you disappeared after the video came out?

  56. Everyone should look up the names of the staff assistants. No NFL player experience. Many are graduates of John Carroll (the one graduate who made it to the league is retired and not on the staff) and are lab rats who are yes men. Former players are not on the staff while guys like Vrable are in Houston. The problem is that there is no push back internally on the staff and all of the men want to be ‘just like Bill’, and then go on to crap themselves when they become head coaches on any level. Any player that pushes back get traded, released or relegated to the bench. I hope Brady requests and receives the trade he deserves so he can win elsewhere as he is wasting his waning career in a place where they think scheme overcomes talent. The good side is that the bandwagon will go away and I can actually go to a game within the next few seasons.

  57. Belichick hasn’t changed with the times. The rookie salary cap has made draft picks more valuable than ever and yes they are drafting late in the first round usually – so you should USE the pick because it’s not going to cost a ton and there is still tons of talent. The Mankins trade is the bizarre one – that’s just arrogance and not being able to see the lack of talent you had on the Oline – and your coach is gone. Can’t stay on top for ever….

  58. They’ll be fine. They’re going to win their division. Then they’ll find a way to win the divisional round playoff (especially if they get to play the Colts). So like it or not, it’s off to the AFCCG.

  61. I’m convinced Flashy doesn’t watch patriot games apparently because he doesn’t even know his own team or he doesn’t know what 10 yards is.

  62. Yes, Belichick is to blame for keeping them in playoff hunt for well over a decade with 7 trips to the AFC titles game and 5 trips to the Super Bowl without a losing season since his first year with the team.

Hell, it’s been over a decade since they’ve had a season with less than 10 wins.

In the parity era of the NFL every team will have a down year or two at some point. Look at every Super Bowl team from the last 15 years, every one of them has had at least one rough season over that time, and most more than one.

The amazing thing is not that the Pats currently appear to be a weak team, the amazing thing is that it took this long to happen.

And that you can blame Belichick for.

  63. Bellichick definitely has to answer a lot for the players they’ve drafted high since 2007

the cheating thing is nonsense, no team has won more games since spygate…..

    07 – rd 1 – merriweather
    08 – rd 2 – Wheatley; rd3 – Crable, Kevin o’connell
    09 – rd2 – chung, Brace, Butler; rd3 – B Tate, Tyron Mckenzie
    10 – rd2- Cunningham, Price; rd3 – Spikes,
    11 – rd 2 – Ras I Dowling; rd 3- Mallet
    12 – rd2- tavon wilson; rd 3 – jake bequette
    13 – rd2- dobson; rd3- logan ryan, Duron harmon

i’ve left out the guys who’ve done well but the list of not so well/no longer with the team is an indictment to the number of picks wasted. Chung had been previously cut, obv Hernandez is in prison also.

i reckon only my Browns have been so wreckless with high draft picks in the same period.

Pats #1 WR is an undrafted FA, former qb out of kent state and under 6ft. he played CB in the ’12 superbowl…..the more i type the more damning it gets

BB is a great coach no doubt, he’s really struck out on the Personnel side in recent year. is it since Pioli left? or does it go back further than that…

  64. I think Belicheck has been a good coach and a good team builder but I do believe this is when things start to go downhill and Brady is too old to mask the flaws now.

The Revis signing looked great but it was even apparent in Tampa that he was a product of Rex Ryan and possibly benefited from Antonio Cromartie being the #2 CB on the Jets.

The Amendola signing has been a complete flop so far

Trading Mankins a pro bowl guard for a role player on the BUCS was dumb.

Constantly trading out of the first round passing up premiere talent that could of been used on a playmaker on offense only to draft Rutgers products who go against the lowest competition in CFB who usually flat out bust in the pro’s (excluding Logan Ryan) Because Bill could never go behind his buddy Schiano’s back like that

    Drafting Dobson over Keenan Allen

    Letting Welker go

So much has been done but this is NOT brady’s fault it is on Kraft and BB.

  65. As much as would I love NE’s downfall, I wouldn’t shovel dirt on them just yet. Our (by our I mean my terrible Jets) division is lousy and I bet they can start to soon put it together on defense and with a patchwork oline at least enough to win the sorry AFC East. This is probably the least talented division in the league. They also get Browner back this week. Gronk has looked like he still needs a month to get going and Brady looks to like whats going on btwn him and Lafell. I hate to say it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they use the final three games, which are all in division, to get something going and maybe even win a game or two in the playoffs.

I would much prefer to see many more of those brutal post game Q and A with that smug SOB though. That was the best part of Monday night

  66. So sick of this guy. He should get down on his knees and kiss brady’s Arse. without him this run doesn’t happen and Belicheck is fired! playing in the worst division in the AFC year after year sure helps.

After the Ray Rice incident what Goddell did with the spy gates tapes smells like another TOTAL cover-up. does anyone believe the tapes wouldn’t created a HUGE deal. It probably was so bad he had to burn them or else people would want the titles stripped from the Laundry Boy Bobby.

I’m convinced Flashy doesn’t watch patriot games apparently because he doesn’t even know his own team or he doesn’t know what 10 yards is.

Well let me help you out little guy.

Bradys first completion to Gronk went for 18 yards with zero yac. Which means the ball would have had to travel more than ten yards in the air. It went 18 yards in the air.

  68. Bonus to the first troll who can demonstrate he understands what Spygate was.

    Haven’t seen him yet.

  69. How long do you expect to win when your primary WRs are 5’9 ish ? Randy Moss was a certified nut job. But you know what hasn’t been the same since Brady and Moss had that great season? The Pats offense. In today’s NFL you won’t win long term with midgets as the primary targets. Can you imagine this team playing against Seattle’s secondary? Wouldn’t even be close.

  70. Before every one goes and says what an awful job Belichick has done with quality of the talent, remember that most of you, and myself included, picked the Pats to be Super Bowl contenders based on the revamped defense and another year of learning for the rookie receivers.

Having said that, the Pats two best players are not playing up to their Pro Bowl legacy. Brady has flat out missed receivers that were open and he had time to get the ball to and no one is afraid of Darrelle Revis anymore. Add to that a Gronkowski who has lost a step due to injuries and you have what we saw out there last night.

  71. If Belichick is so inferior as a coach /GM, why not replace him with the infallible Pittsburgh combo of Colbert and Tomlin.

    New England – Bad
    Pittsburgh – Good
    .

  72. Patriots have the best winning % in the NFL since Spygate. They’ve been to 3 SB and 5 AFC championship games. Yep they haven’t won since SpyGate.

Remember his last good draft? Neither do we. Probably the most overrated coach ever.
    ——————————————————-

I’ll take him any day over your present and prior coach.

  74. I think Brady should hightail it out of New England before it’s too late but he seems pretty entrenched. I just honestly wonder how pissed off Tom Brady is at Belichick…probably won’t find out for years though…

  75. The Pats have spent the past decade plus doing to other teams what was just done to them on national TV.

Fans and broadcasters alike will all take their shots while we’re down, they’re deserved. But we all know this just means NE is gonna come back with an even greater vengeance and furious anger.

So enjoy using us a punching bag for a few weeks.
We’ve done it to you all for the last decade plus, and probably will for the next one with the 2nd coming, Jimmy G!

  76. So far, the Cowboys, 49ers, Chiefs, Packers, Giants, texans, Saints, and Falcons have all looked terrible in at least one game, and then looked pretty good on other games. I would not be surprised if the Patriots keep showing their growing pains while the new players keep developing until the Patriots start gelling and start winning again.

When you keep having to reload, this is what happens. But watch out for that season where the Patriots start off with no rookies in the starting line-up and everyone has a year or two of NFL experience.

When the team does not have to spend games teaching the rookie how to play as we have seen in recent seasons, then there will be no need for the annual turn around from so-so pretender to playoff team.

  77. Brady isn’t the problem. IMO he is their best player. If the Pats bench him it would be the dumbest move of all time. If you want to point fingers of blame it has to be the coach and GM for not giving one the best throwing QB’s in the game time to throw the ball. O-line looked as bad as their defense.

  78. You gotta give credit to a coach who gets that many wins out of a sixth-round draft pick. Heck, he got 11 wins out of Matt freakin’ Cassel, who through 30 passes in college and has disappeared since he left their team.

He normally gets the most out of players, but now other teams have learned to do the same. Hence, the current struggles.

  79. Without Brady Belichick is a sub .500 coach. That is just a fact.

He was never any type of coaching genius although he loves to hear that talk.

And despite the immense personal football library and all that other crap …. without Brady and the cheating of course he would have been out of the league a year after the injury to Bledsoe.

A career built on a HOF qb and lots and lots of cheating,

  80. @truths4all: The Pats haven’t been bad in just one game. They’ve been bad in THREE out of FOUR games. They were extremely lucky to beat the worst team in the league at home.

  81. Because it’s not enough to find ways to trade down or to draft backup quarterbacks lower than perhaps they should have gone.

    __________________________________

Other than in 2000, when has BB ever drafted a quarterback lower than they should have gone? Certainly wasn’t the case with Mallett. Oh, wait, that’s right. 75% of PFT planet is already convinced Garapollo is a better QB than Brady.

  82. lol – yes, they looked awful last night but they are 2-2 4 games into the season(after beating 2 bad teams).

    _________________

I don’t buy the “we never get a top draft pick” argument. The draft is a crap shoot. Brady himself was a 6th rounder. Jamarcus Russell was a number one pick. See what I mean?

  83. Brady needs to get into a situation like Peyton Manning did. He could get someone with a lot of weapons to give him a big contract, just like Denver did Manning.

  84. I’m a Pats fan and thought they should have traded Brady when a desperate team would have given up the farm for him.

That said when people say that the AFC east had been a week division for more than a decade and that’s why the Patriots have made the playoffs that is ridiculous.

    1. The AFC east record against the rest of the league has always been competitive.

    2. One of the reason why the Bills, Dolphins and Jets have such a bad record-they lose to the Patriots a lot!!!

  85. They should really be worrying about going 4 & 12 or 6 & 10, looking at their remaining schedule, and going by what the displayed last night, they have 2 -6 winnable games, more likely 4

  86. I blame the Hoody and his puppet Matt Patricia. Most blame goes to Josh “Pass it 9/10 times, 10/10 if Bills not lookin” McDaniels! Soft football will not win Super Bowls

  87. And even if the Pats somehow make the playoffs at 9-7, they will be the team that every other team wants to play in the first round, this year’s Houston Texans.

  88. I think the biggest fallacy going around is that Belichick is “smarter than everyone else”. He certainly believes it, and it corrupts his decision making process. Unless he was the one who drafted Tom Brady, it’s hard to separate Belichick’s so-called genius from having a Hall of Fame QB since he only started winning after Brady became his starting QB.

It’s like a classic Greek tragedy where the “hero” gets a big head and the Gods punish him.
