More support for Harbaugh from 49ers locker room

Deion Sanders says 49ers players want coach Jim Harbaugh to go.  Harbaugh says it’s a bunch of crap.  The jurors (i.e., the players) are beginning to chime, and the early verdict is . . . .

Crap.

He’s the best coach I’ve ever been around,” tackle Jonathan Martin said, via the San Jose Mercury News.  “Even though he might be cheesy at times with slogans and sayings, his enthusiasm rubs off on players.  And his record speaks for itself.”

Of course, Martin would be likely to say that, since Harbaugh coached Martin at Stanford and helped resurrect Martin’s pro career after he decided to walk out on the Dolphins as the result of intense bullying in 2013.  But Martin, who said he has seen no evidence of discord, wasn’t alone.

“Everything’s great,” linebacker NaVorro Bowman said. “I mean, we play, he coach. We can’t really control anything else.”

(It’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it’s also no evidence that players want Harbaugh gone.)

Ditto from punter Andy Lee: “I don’t see that anywhere in this locker room.  From my point of view, everything is normal.”

And from linebacker Michael Wilhoite: “His attitude is the attitude we take. That toughness, that grind, that grit — it’s been bred in us since I first got here. It was known we were going to be tough. It was known we were going to have a callous that we had built up. It was known that we were very physical, we ran the ball, we stopped the run, we played good football and we were disciplined.”

So maybe Deion is simply wrong.  Or maybe there’s a small pocket of malcontents who won’t complain about Harbaugh on the record.

Or maybe Deion is playing a psychological game with one of the various teams for which he once played, like Tom Jackson once claimed he did when picking the Jets to lose to the Patriots in the playoffs.

Regardless, Deion’s “report” that the players don’t like their coach seems to be galvanizing the 49ers.  Maybe in February Harbaugh will snub Deion after winning the Super Bowl like Bill Belichick once did with Jackson, who had proclaimed in September that the Patriots players “hate their coach.”

  1. Anecdotal evidence from a punter and a player salvaged from the scrap heap by Harbaugh does not overcome the mountain of smoke and common sense that point to a…

    FIRE!!!!!!!!!

  2. Let’s see–endorsements from a bully chased off another team, an injured player who will be out for most of the season, and a punter. They may all be fine players, but they are not exactly three people who have the pulse of the locker room.

However, I will give you Wilhoite. He’s a good one.

  3. Well of course players are going to publicly say they like Harbaugh. What else would you expect?

For the same reason if you hate your boss, you’re not going to write an article about how much you hate him and how much you’d wish he’d leave.

  4. That’s like Deion saying he was the best corner ever.. haha last i checked to play defense, you must tackle. If you can’t tackle, you can’t really play defense. Cornerback is a defensive position. Is anyone following me here…?

  5. “not exactly a ringing endorsement”

You want these dudes to hold sparklers and do a dance routine to 80’s music when they make these statements?

The only people who care about any of this are the people constantly writing about it.

    8-8

    And this guy knows 8-8.

  7. Ok niner fan that said “2 NFC championship games and a Super Bowl”. That’s a little misleading. That 2 NFC championship game LOSSES and a Super Bowl LOSS! You niner fans are easily impressed. You think the eagles fans or bills fans look back and say damn that was fun losing all those big games? Harblow and Kaperchoke will never lift a trophy.

  8. I wish Deion would say that Coughlin lost his lockerroom. We win Super Bowls when our team can hang their hats on something like that!

  9. People referring to Andy Lee as just a ‘punter” are funny. Lee has been on this team longer than anyone else, he has gone through the Erickson, Nolan and Singletary eras, he might have a better idea than anyone of what a dysfunctional locker room looks like.

  10. Pretty obvious by now that this “players leak” was orchestrated by York and Baalke.

I don’t even root for the Niners but Harbaugh is a great coach and they are idiots for pushing him out.

  11. Sooo many 9ers haters want this to be true..so maybe a small group dont like the coach..the fact that players are becoming vocal in support of their coach shows that these rumors got overblown way too much..majority of players don’t want him gone and the environment is not toxic which makes these comments ridiculous.

  12. Once again, 3 Consecutive NFC Championship games says it all people….

    Stop it with this nonsense.

Besides, Deion was charged with trying to destroy evidence after he beat his now estranged wife.

    There’s some credibility for you.

  13. 1hawksfan, why would anyone care what you think. You’re
A fan of a rival team who just trolls PFT. How many players in that locker room have now come out against the report? There are people out there who have a vested interest in Harbaugh failing (Media, rival teams, people who’s team haven’t been a top two team for 3 years), but I doubt those who have experienced so much success would be calling for his head.

  14. I continue to think that the source of this is LeMichael James (even though he’s no longer in that locker room) Every team will have a malcontent or two, that’s the nature of the beast.

  15. I say shame on Deion for muck raking like this. He may somehow want to consider it “his job” but there’s is not the slightest thing about it that I would consider professional.

He might as well belong to a bunch of old biddies in a beauty parlor talking behind people’s backs.

The media sharks can smell blood in the water with regards to the Jim Harbaugh story and things have gotten ugly.

  16. Interesting how all the reports of locker room implosion is coming from the NATIONAL media. Do you see any reports like that from the local press corp who are in the locker room each day? Ah, NO. So, some ‘deep throat’ person or persons who have it in for Harbaugh are using people these ‘reporter’ tools to create a rift and manufacture a story.

Says the guy whose team lost to Tampa Bay..

  18. When Deion’s football analyst career ends(which shouldn’t be in the too far future), guaranteed TMZ will hire him.

  19. I think Deion got the name wrong about no support in the locker room.
    It’s Jonathan Martin not Harbaugh.

  20. Also where did this idea start that this is Harbaugh’s final season as head coach? He is signed through 2015 yet I keep seeing the insinuation that because he hasnt been extended yet, that he must be gone even though there is a season and 3/4 still left on his contract.

If its September 2015 and he still doesnt have a new deal, then it might be worth being looked at as a legitimate issue but many in the media have erroneously reported that this is his final season under contract.

  21. LOL @ this:

Why is it when a non 49ers fan comments and they tell you who they’re a fan of, seahawk fans still think its a 49ers fan? Stop obsessing and thinking everyone that comments is a 49ers fan and read the whole comment as this fan tells you who he likes: As a Lions fan, I would long for implosions like that.

    Get over yourself seahawk fans!

  22. “Everything’s great,” linebacker NaVorro Bowman said. “I mean, we play, he coach.
    =====================================

    Yeah. He coach.

  23. If a coach, any coach, came to the Lions and took them to three NFC championship games and a superbowl in his first three years, he’d be given a lifetime contract, statues would be built and most of us die hard fans would name our first born sons after him.

Perspective. Harbaugh is an odd ball, but he’s also a damn good coach.

  24. “Even though he might be cheesy at times with slogans and sayings” – exactly why he would wear you out after time. Cheesy isn’t a quality most football players would respect or admire in their coach.

Dude, what are you talking about!? How does an injury, their position or their previous team situation change anything? They’re all on the team and are very aware of what’s going on. Such a simple mind you must have. Just admit it. Sanders is full of it…as always. If Mike Florio (who hates the 49ers) is slowly starting to admit this, it must be true.

  26. love niner haters on the boards. shocker it comes primarily from the most insecure fan base residing in seattle. though I guess i can understand since they won a superbowl, and still nobody cares cus its seattle. Its kinda like the white sox winning the world series.

  27. the player monopolization of tv commentary has really gotten old. These people were good athletes, but they aren’t good at this gig.

Sanders is one of the worst. I turn the channel when he speaks.

  28. even as a 49er fan, you kind of have to think where there is smoke there is fire. Harbaugh does wear on people. I am sure there are a few in the locker room that are tired of him. But what those reports don’t give you a sense of is if it is a few people or a lot.

In any case, the way the team has been playing this year, even if Harbaugh was out, I don’t think he is the problem. Penalties, stupid mistakes, etc, not to mention players suspended or coming under scrutiny for their own stupid mistakes.

If anything that crew needs a strong guy at the top to keep some semblance of order. Good luck finding a better coach than Harbaugh in the near future.

  29. Who knows what the truth is, but personally as a Hawks fan I hope Jim stays in Santa Clara and the rivalry between the two teams continues. It’s good for both city’s, fans, the league, and the Best Coast. Jim is a crazy maniac but he has proven to be a winner and I respect that. Go Hawks!

  30. Jonathan Martin will not allow name calling in his locker room. the article lost all credit when his name came up.

  31. His way has worn thin with these players. No one would go on record blasting their coach but they can’t stand him.

  32. Coming from a Hawks fan, even I think Sanders needs to leave some comments off air. He has no business talking locker rooms.

Punters and injured players aren’t spending lots of time with the rest of the team. The P/Ks work by themselves 85% of the time and the players with significant injuries like Bowman aren’t hanging in the locker room or on the practice field.

I know Harbaugh (he’s a former neighbor) and he’s a jackass. what you see on the sidelines is the person.

  34. Atthemurph

Are they on the bus, the plane, the sideline? Yes yes and yes. None of them are in the dark, as youre suggesting. Bowman has been there the whole time doin what he can. Lee has been on the team longer than anyone. And Martin has been there everyday for months. Im sure they have a pretty good idea of whats going on.

In regards to your made up story about “knowing” Harbaugh, Im sure he is a jackass. So is Belicheck. But he wins. Thats all I care about.

Unitll recently the Sehacks never won anything. How’s that trophy? Loney I’ll bet. Can you imagine what 5 of them look like in the same trophy case? I didn’t think so..

  36. One stupid ignorant “analyst” that doesn’t realize to be a good analyst you keep your opinion to yourself. Says the players don’t want to play for harbaugh immediately after they play hard for him and everyone just runs with it even though I think like 10 players (starters) have chimed in to say it’s crap. So many people say what do expect them to say oh I don’t know if it were true they wouldn’t say anything morons. And how do people think he will ever go back to college can you win a sb in college I forget, he’s won championship s in college he on the road to a super bowl and is not gonna take an exit anywhere. You have to be a real idiot to think otherwise. And for the love of God why do Seahawks fans even come in to post on a harbaugh gaining support story. Why. I wouldn’t be caught dead in a Seahawks Pete Carroll story, oh I forget you’ve only been a Seahawks fan for like what 9 moths or so you fricken bandwagoners. I liked it better the previous 20 years where the Seahawks couldn’t win a Danm scratcher if they bought the whole roll.
Oh an Mr. Deon you are one stupid son of a…
