As expected, Matt Prater to work out for Lions

AP

In perhaps the least surprising news of the day, perhaps the best available kicker is working out for the NFL’s worst kicking team tomorrow.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, former Broncos kicker Matt Prater will be among the kickers trying out for the Lions.

The Lions have already blown through two kickers this year, making just 4-of-12 field goals between Nate Freese and Alex Henery, and just 1-of-9 from 40 yards or longer.

The last time we saw Prater, before his four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, he was 25-of-26 for the Broncos last year, leading the league in touchbacks.

While playing at elevation might have helped with the distance, kicking in the controlled environment of Ford Field shouldn’t create a drop-off in accuracy.

Prater reportedly has interest from four other teams, but the Lions appear to have the first crack at him.

  1. Welcome to Detroit, Matt! Good luck with your new team and with continuing sobriety from here on. Hopefully the Broncos won’t miss you!

  2. Fire up the Ford Family private jet and pick his butt up with it and feed him steak and lobster on the way over. Mayhew better not let him leave unsigned.

  3. If the lions do sign him….

he will fall off the wagon around the last game of season…cause that’s when the lions go to Green Play to play….

someone will give Prater a case of Pabst

  4. ….if he signs, he’ll just be going back the the team that gave him his 1st try out as a kicker about 7 years ago. Detroit could have had him all these years ! He was also with Miami before he landed a full time gig with Denver.

  5. Why even bother going through the motions? Sign him via teleconferance. He could be drunk and 20 lbs overweight and still be better then what they had.

  6. I loved Jay Feelys Tweet yesterday. Somebody asked “I wonder what Jay Feely’s doing right now?” He Tweeted; “Waiting for the Lions to call.”

  7. Lions fan here. We had only 2 different, outstanding place kickers for 35 years. This year, in just over a month, we’re looking at number 3.

  8. As a Lions fan, it’s almost comical our biggest concern is at kicker, not defensive backfield…..

  9. Man do I wish the Bills had dan Carpenter in Super Bowl XXV. We likely would have won that game. Of course if we had the defensive line we have now, we would have won, likely, as well. (Sorry Norwood. Unfortunately, you are always going to be nick named Norwide).

  10. Jay Feeley should have been signed, at least he isn’t a drunk. He kicked 58/61 and 62 today. He would have been good for the Lions. He doesn’t miss much, I wish he was back with the Dolphins.
