Panthers angry over Vontaze Burfict’s extra leg-twisting

Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict had a pair of unnecessary roughness penalties before he left with a head injury yesterday.

But after he returned, he had a pair of plays which were unnecessarily rough, even though they weren’t flagged.

Burfict appeared to twist the ankles of both Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and tight end Greg Olsen after making tackles, plays which didn’t draw the scrutiny of refs on the field.

Charlotte photographer Jeremy Igo captured the Olsen twist, which wasn’t as immediately noticeable as the one on Newton.

Newton, who is coming off ankle surgery, gave Burfict a little kick back at the end of that play, though play resumed without any offcials getting involved.

Apparently no one in the post-game locker room was asked about the play, but Panthers kicker Graham Gano took to Twitter afterwards with some harsh words.

“Unbelievable that a player would intentionally try to hurt my teammates twice,” Gano wrote. “I hope the NFL lays down the law hard. #unacceptable.”

Burfict’s actions do invite further scrutiny, and the league will likely want to have a look, especially since he targeted the leg Newton had surgically repaired this offseason.

  1. I noticed the one on Olsen – I was surprised Olsen didn’t get up and have something to say to him about it.
I despise hashtags, but her goes – #heyGanomakeyourshortfieldgoalsthentalktrashafterthegame

  2. Put a head on head on this dirty Bengal and let him go concussed for the season. This is a truly dirty player coming out of college.

  3. Even as a Panthers fan I’m not bothered by this…its FOOTBALL guys….its not the boy scouts. Sure you don’t want to see players get hurt behind a dirty tactic but hey, its a rough sport

  4. The Olsen one looks pretty obvious and pretty disgusting. A suspension and heavy fine is deserved since the intent was to injure and maim.

I’m sure the NFL won’t do anything unless it can be proven that Burfict was smoking a joint at the same time.

  5. Players who intentionally try to injure other players should lose respect league wide. It’s one thing to knock a player out with a big hit, it’s quite another to intentionally twist their ankle at the end of a play.

  6. Honestly, what do you expect? Didn’t this clown blatantly sacktap opposing O-linemen, on camera, at least twice last year? Maybe if he wears non-Bose headphones the next time he deliberately tries to injure someone, the league will actually sit up and take note…

  7. I thought he did this to Brian Hoyer’s arm last year in Hoyer’s one game against the Bengals. Hoyer gave him a funny look but nothing else was said.

  8. I re-winded this play at least 5 times and I just can’t believe how blatant that was. Not to mention Burfict putting up personal fouls all day, it didn’t surprise me that he would try twisting Cam’s surgically repaired ankle off his leg.

Dude is an ignorant punk that has physical skills, but will continue to hurt the Bengals with his style of play.

  9. Curtis Lofton took Matt Cassell out with a similar play earlier this year. It’s basically the same principle as Jui-Jitsu “heel hook”. If if you tork it hard enough, it will cause a spiral fracture and you’ll probably have a limp the rest of your life. I’m surprised somebody hasn’t mastered it and ruined a career of a star… then the NFL will come down on the practice.

  10. Anyone else remember when football was played by men ? When your kicker has to take to twitter to complain on your behalf. . . the end is near. #markcubanisright

  11. He should be suspended for the rest of the season and fined half his salary. The NFL should have zero tolerance for blatant dirty play where the obvious intention is to injure someone.

  12. I can not believe that some posters condone this crap. It is one thing to play hard and a total different thing to play dirty. He was not being a “man” when he made those tackles. He was being a coward that was afraid to be beaten by better “men” on a fair playing field.

  13. Its football you turds. The object of the game is to physically bring someone down to the ground. Should we tell Luke that he didn’t have to hit Gio that hard? He didn’t have to do destroy and could have just made a sound tackle?? Um no its football and they are all trying to hurt each other. If you aint cheatin you aint tryin. Some of the best defenders are dirty and I personally want that edge. SUH, Burfict, James Harrison just to name a few.

  14. Might as well try to do something after the BS flags he was picking up earlier in the game for perfectly clean hits. Make it worth it.

  15. Watch his play on Brian Hoyer at 55 seconds to go in the first quarter of Cinci at Cleve last year.

The NFLPA should get into these issues.

Football is blasting people with tackles – pancake blocks.

    Not Ankle Locks…

That’s chicken crap – can’t beat a team so you resort to trying to injure a guy or two… that’s crap.

  17. In other news… Bengals Kicker Mike Nugent tweets furious message condemning Carolina Panthers offense players for making contact with Vontaze Burfict’s helmet while he was making tackles. Having missed much of the season with concussions the thought of playing rough football is just unfathomable. People close to the situation believe that because of the recent injuries to Burfict’s head all Panthers players should have taken a pre-whistle knee whenever Burfict was nearby to protect him. whimps…

He was already down. They were both already down…in the endzone having already scored on him. The point is for him to have prevented them from doing that. He couldnt and resorted to attempting to specificslly injure after the play.

  19. Gotta love the band wagon Carolina fans – Olsen needs to play and just shut up – oh yeah the kicker too

  20. Any player who does something during or after a play that smacks of intentionally trying to injure another player should be banned.
    First instance: 4 game suspension
    Second instance: full year suspension.
    Third instance: Lifetime ban.

  21. Probably was dirty…consider the source but dang, the big bad bullies don’t like a taste of their own medicine! Look yourselves in the mirror Panthers!
