Harvin says Jets have told him to be himself

AP

Jets receiver Percy Harvin met the New York media for the first time on Monday.  And while he wasn’t pressed as aggressively as the New York media’s reputation would suggest, Harvin elaborated much more on his circumstances than when he faced a strong of slo-pitch softballs from the media operation owned by the Jets.

Harvin opted not to delve into the events that resulted in the stunning trade that sent him from Seattle to New York.  “All I am is I’m moving forward,” Harvin said.  “I’m leaving what’s in the past in the past.”

On whether he’s a good teammate, Harvin said, “All I can say is judge me off of what you see.”

So what will we see?  Harvin said that management “told me to just come here and be myself.”  (Which reminds me of Bill Cosby’s take on cocaine.)

“I’m definitely not a perfect person,” Harvin said.  “I have a lot of things I wish I would have done a little differently.  I’m moving forward.  I’m learning from those lessons.”

He hopes to put the lessons to use for more than the next nine games.  “It’s definitely a place I want to be for a long time,” Harvin said.

“I just feel good here.  I feel welcome.  I’m ready to go.”

He’s ready to play for coach Rex Ryan.  “I love him,” Harvin said.  “Love him, love him.”

That’s good news for Rex.  Because Harvin reportedly has had multiple confrontations with coaches he didn’t love, love.

  1. “Harvin says Jets have told him to be himself”

Which translates to: “Be yourself, so when you suck and this trade blows up in our face, we can blame you for you being you.”

  2. If I’m a NY Jets receiver or QB, I’m immediately signing up for boxing or martial arts lessons.

  3. It doesn’t matter what questions are asked, because you know he’s going to give vanilla answers at this point. Do you expect him to say that he’s a maniac that likes to knock people out?

  4. Harvin needs to go to a team with a veteran legen at quarterback to succeed. Favre did well with him, but Wilson as great as he has been so far was just too young to demand Harvin’s respect. Maybe New England takes a look after the Jets cut Harvin after this season.

  5. The important thing is that both sides seem to be very happy with each other and willing to support each other as team members, so it sounds like a healthy situation and perhaps a perfect pairing for both sides. The Jets clearly need more skilled players that can help them win games, and the Percy needed a team that wants him to be there. This has a chance of working out well, it’s only a question of how many wins can this team now generate and will they get a good value on the transaction, and everybody shouldn’t assume that the coaches and this player can’t make things work since they clearly believe that they can make it work.

  6. The Vikings were right we (The Hawks) were wrong. At this point as a Hawks fan with or without Percy were sinking like the Titanic with zero sacks, zero QB hits, zero turnovers and half our starters on D either out multiple weeks or on IR our lack of depth is evident and RW can’t do it by himself so unless something crazy happens it would be a miracle if we can get to 10-6. I hope for the best and believe in the program so GO HAWKS!!

  7. After being told by the Jets to just be himself Harvin promptly punched Geno Smith in the face, told the WR coach that he wouldn’t be doing wind sprints, got a mysterious headache and left the facility with no estimate for his return.

  8. Vikings own the Hawks in that trade huh?

What exactly have the Vikings done since “the trade”? – hmmm, they’ve gone 7-16-1. The Hawks have gone 19-6 with a Super Bowl Championship.

Yeah, Vikings own the Hawks…. Dummies.

  9. “Harvin says Jets have told him to be himself”

Percy shows up in the locker room with a baseball bat, dressed like a ninja and starts laying people out while they run for the exits.

  10. He is playing for a new contract, again, so watch him excel the rest of this year.
I respect your optimism, and Percy does play hard, but being himself means there will be lots of problems.
They will release him after this year; Idzik has a fire and he just unloaded a tanker load of gas on it.

  11. Judge me off of what you see, not what you hear about me slugging teammates, blowing up at coaches and beefing with my quarterbacks. Okay, Percy!

  12. I can’t wait until Sunday when he takes the field with a bunch of brass knuckles on his hands

  13. “Harvin says Jets have told him to be himself”

Translation: We need a couple players to be body-slammed so have at it.

  14. One of the problems is we don’t see him punching his teammates before games, we don’t see him ignoring the coaches or getting into fights with the coaches in practice.

Judging him by what we see is a problem because the Seahawks swept it all under the rug as long as they thought he could help him.

Even now players won’t talk about it.

  15. Great upside for the Jets. None of Harvin’s money is guaranteed after this year… giving him a huge incentive to behave.
If he flakes out and the Jets cut him, he’ll be reduced to signing a bargain basement contract elsewhere… and the Jets will only be out a 6th-round pick.

So, Harvin needs to straighten up and fly right — and if he does,he can be a game-changing talent.

Don’t understand the Jet bashing — this is a smart move.

  16. That’s much better advice when given BEFORE a guy has quickly worn out his welcome with two teams. If Percy doesn’t want to try playing in Canada he’d better start being what the team wants him to be.

  17. Percy, we would like you to start by body slamming Eric Decker, since he is a better reciever than you and will lead this team in recieving. Just be yourself.

  18. We obviously got hosed and over paid for the trade to the Vikings. I’m thrilled we got a pick for him. Even if its a sixth rounder

  19. Hopefully “I’m leaving what’s in the past in the past.” means he learned. And as a Jet fan I hope so, Decker and Harvin could be a deadly combo if everything goes right.

  20. It’s easy to rip Harvin after hearing all of these stories, but if anything, all of these stories point to him needing serious professional help. It’s sad, honestly. The dude’s got serious anger management issues and he needs help. For 2 teams to give up on a guy as out of this world talented as he is should raise some serious red flags. It’s beyond just being a diva or a spoiled brat, there’s some chemical imbalances there.

  21. So far florida, minnesota and seattle have been the problem. It’s all just been a big misunderstanding each place he has been. You can tell a guy a lying when he repeats himself 3 times.

Still a stud on the football field but not so much as a person and team mate.

I’m just wondering if the seachickens would have kissed his backside all summer if he would have broken Golden’s neck the night before the superbowl. Oh what a story that almost was!!

Love You Percy, love you, Love you.

  22. As long as they don’t re-sign him, it’s a good Band-Aid. Hopefully they learned with Metonio Holmes to not give extended contracts to locker room cancers.

  23. jets have an easy schedule. don’t be surprised if you see them in the wild card hunt.

with harvin, it’s just a matter of how long this honeymoon period lasts. he wanted out of seattle, so i don’t exactly believe he is looking to win like favre said he was. i think he is looking for a team that will bend over for him and will do whatever he tells them to. he is almost like peyton manning, just with more choke slams. jets may be the perfect fit for him after all.

  24. Seahawks fans crack me up when they get all defensive. Love to talk the talk but hate when they are on the receiving end. Take a breathe seattlecoug, I think the point is in the trade, the Vikings owned the Hawks. Anyone with any idea about football knows this to be true. Yes the Hawks have dominated since the trade, but not because of Percy harvin. If that trade never happened the record for each team would be the same. The Hawks would still be super bowl champs, etc. To actually respond to that assertion with anything other than, yeah, the vikes got the better end of the deal is lame. A first, a third, and a seventh for harvin who gave you 9 games, like 30 catches and a td in the super bowl and you then cashed him in for a fourth… How can you even argue who won that trade??? Like I said, it made no tangible difference to the on field product. So your response is irrelevant and makes you look like a bit of a pansy. Just saying

The Vikings were overdue for a good trade, especially after they traded for Moss in 2010 , and when they traded him in 2005 and in both cases ended up with nothing.

  26. Geno Smith is not going to magically start completing more passes. The talent at WR wasn’t the issue.

  27. how much do you want to bet that rex told him something to the effect of “ill rub down your beautiful feet after every single practice”

  28. He will certainly be himself,he only knows one way and that is the way that got him booted out of Minn. to Seattle and again booted out of Seattle to the Jets.good luck Rex you will need it with him, just remember to baby him, give him what he demands and dont ever get in his way like some players have or you too could get punched out.

  29. Why has there been NO mention of Russell Wilson becoming the ONLY player in NFL history to throw for 300+ yards and rush for 100+ yards in a game?

Your glass must be spilling over at half full !!

Extra Extra Jets run the table and make the playoffs.

Must only be in your universe.

  31. Percy must have had a meltdown after he heard last week that Russell Wilson’s jersey was the top-seller in all of the NFL

That was the bit of reality too much for this prima donna

  32. I wish he had been traded to Baltimore. The ensuing fight between him and Steve Smith would be incredible!

  33. The Jets are rapidly moving along the path toward becoming the Raiders-East. At this rate, we’ll be seeing Woody Johnson rocking the white jumpsuit by this time next year…glasses on a chain around the neck will be next…

    ====================================

As a Seahawks fan they do own us in a sense – as far as the trade itself is concerned ONLY, not the resulting plays. We gave a 1, 3 & 7, plus millions of bucks for 2 years of service (8 games actually) and get in return between a 4th & 6th pick. We took a chance, it backfired, now its time to move on, put it behind BOTH of us and let the Seahawks team develop. We’ve a lot of depth and athleticism we’ve barely seen on the field yet.

I’m not interested in the what or they why, it occurred and its over. I wish Harvin the best with his new team, now moving right along… GO SEAHAWKS!!!

  35. Well this will end well. And nice seeing the Seahawks implode. Couldn’t happen to a more arrogant group.

  36. Love how the Viking trolls are all, “we owned the Hawks in this trade.” It must pretty bad when you aren’t even half way through the regular season and you’re chalking up “trade wins”. Paper champs in the off season, Trade Champs in the regular season. Flicking through the channels during the playoffs.

  37. Seahawks want to expand Percy Harvin’s role

Report: Seahawks trade Percy Harvin to the Jets
    October 17, 2014, 5:34 PM EDT

Seahawks admit lack of fit with Harvin, move on
    October 17, 2014, 6:15 PM EDT
    ===================

In the span of an hour and a half, the ‘Hawks talk about expanding Harvin’s role to trading him, then to say there was a “lack of fit”? How does one go from having his role expanded on the team to being traded that fast?

Am I the only one that sees the “expanding Harvin’s role” story as an attempt to get more for Harvin than they had already been offered?

No, he has just never in his entire pathetic life been told NO. When he does, he throws a tantrum. No different than a 3 year old. Don’t look for things to blame his behavior on. He will never know what big boy pants are if someone doesn’t smack him upside the head. We have seen this too often with these type clowns.

  39. Check out Harvin’s starting QBs in the NFL:
    -Favre
    -Ponder
    -Wilson
    -G. Smith

The last 3 are very young QBs (Ponder, Wilson, G. Smith).

Reports state he had issues w/both Ponder & Wilson.

If using the quote “those who don’t learn from history are destined to repeat it” is an indicator to predict the near future, it doesn’t look good.

    Smh.

  40. Hmmm… I think they told Sanchez, Tebow and Santonio the same thing. Funny how the Jets Fans were gloating about their Dream Team signings of Chris Johnson and Eric Decker and neither has amounted to a hill of beans. My guess is Harvin as a one an done. He is costing them $7.4M for half a season and is due $11M next year if resigned. THat makes Mike Wallace look like a bargain. At least Wallace is a top 12 WR!

Yes, I am a Dolphins fan, so biased but YOU CAN’T BUILD A GOOD TEAM BY FREE AGENCY. We tried and it failed. Our recent Playmakers are all Draftees, except Brandon Albert, Grimes and Finnegan.

  41. Haha…as I’ve said before, looking at the eyes of the Jets front office personnel during the few times they get in front of a microphone is like looking into the eyes of a goldfish swimming in a bowl…

There is nothing there…nothing behind the eyes….

They don’t have a clue, and they never will….

  42. Quit making excuses for Harvin…he’s a grown man and if you have problems deal with them don’t bring your team and teammates down. Assaulting people in the real world not the NFL gets you jail time and nobody wants to hear Crying about “anger issues”. The other 52 members of his team who do deal with their problems like grown men shouldn’t have to suffer because he rather make excuses even after getting a big time contract. New York press and fans will eat this clown alive.

I love how the Vikings’ stealing of Hutchinson got them into the Super Bowl. Oh wait…

By the way, Tracy Porter owned the Vikings in the playoffs before the Vikings’ playoff window slammed shut! LOLOL

  45. Well, he took the high ground….that’s a good start. The guys got speed…I don’t see him as a traditional receiver, but obviously he can impact any game. Here’s wishing you and the Jets well…gotta stay positive folks!

  46. “they told me to be myself”- Im gonna kick Genos butt until he starts winning games for us.

  47. He’s likely already taken Geno behind the woodshed to give him the personal playbook he constructed on the flight from Seattle.

Geno follow this simple play – (7-16)

    You’re #7 –
Even though I requested #11 Kerley is wearing it. For now.

So no 7-11 play in this book just yet.
    Even so –
    I’m still always open.
When I’m not it’s on you.

    Got it?
    Good.
Don’t make me repeat myself and we’ll get along just fine.

  48. As for the Vikes “owning” anything…

    4. I think, looking back on the Percy Harvin deal for Minnesota, it’s too early to draw final conclusions, but here’s what the Vikes did with the first- and seventh-round picks in 2013 and the third-rounder in 2014: Cornerback Xavier Rhodes and guard Travis Bond were the 2013 picks, and running back Jerick McKinnon the 2014 pick. McKinnon is a starter now, has shown good burst and is averaging 5.2 yards per rush. Bond is out of the NFL; he never made the Vikings’ active roster. Rhodes has started 13 games at corner (he’s now the starting right cornerback) for Minnesota and been decent but not a difference-maker. Clearly, Rhodes is the centerpiece piece of this deal and must become more of a playmaker for the Vikings to feel good about the three picks from this trade. (Worth noting: Rhodes was beaten by Buffalo’s Sammy Watkins for the game-winning touchdown with one second remaining on Sunday.)

A cavalcade of losers, not counting the fumble-king they traded up with Seattle to draft in 2014.

  49. Wait until the doo doo hits the fan to see if Percy Harvin behaves like a saint or he will do his Mike Tyson impression on his teammates. The New York media will love him if he blows his stack on the sidelines this year.

  50. Yes, the Vikings got the better of the deal between the Hawks and them, and yes, the Jets will almost certainly learn the same lesson in time. Whether they have the guts to cut him loose and move on is another thing altogether.
What frustrates me is that this team paid him what he was asking for. Took all the time, energy, and money that it took to get him back in shape. After paying him all of this money, he causes trouble for the team because he wants to be used differently? I make $ 50,000 a year as a special education teacher and I do what I’m told to do. I’ll never be able to justify in my mind the ways of these athletes. God how I wish they could get a taste of real work and low pay just once in their lifetimes so they could fully appreciate what a gift it is to make millions playing a game!
